Hi all...had a query...When copying into my desire hd sd card- the average speed is about 2mb/s
Is it normal....any way to improve it?
If your card is a Class 2, then it's normal. If you want faster write speed, upgrade to a Class 4 or even 6 card.
Use a Class 6 SDHC card
Consumer mobile phones come with Class 2 SD cards, with a low read/write speed.
The fasted sdcard is Class 6, which offers very fast readwrite speeds.
but it aslo depends upon your pc hardware at read/writing. if you have a top end pc/laptop that capable of fast transfer speeds then yes you will benefit from a higher class sdcard. but if your hardware is limited then i wouldn't really bother, only saying this as the not cheap to buy esp when you get class 6 or 10 sdcard, mine cost £70 an i don't get that faster transfer speeds but that cause my laptop ****

try asking your local mobile retail shop .. you could also try ebay or something ...
Ps: note that you need a higher class card to record videos in 720p too. Atleast a class 4 is required for recording at 720p

Have a look at the card and check whether you see a 2, 4, 6... in a sort of an open circle (right side of circle is open) printed on it.
did you sd card come with your mobile phone? if so, it is very likely a class 2 sd card.
I wanted to let anyone looking for a micro sd about a deal i found. I found a Patriot Memory 16gb micro sdhc class 10 for $39.99 on www.CompUSA.com I think i'm going to order one after reading here on xda that patriot makes a pretty reliable sd card. I haven't ever used a patriot memory product so i only know what guys on here have posted. anyone make sure you check into the company on your own. They have the wintec 32 gb class 10 for $84.99 too!
apparently class10 cards are no good for phones, take a look at this link
yeah you dont want to spend all the money on something that might not work right?
I had read here on xda that the class of the sd card doesn't matter but the size(gb) is what matters with phones. like my SE X10 is only compatible with up to 16gb of external memory. Is that not correct? Can anyone clear this up for me?
X10's are compatible with up to 32gb microSD cards, I've got one in mine.
The size is important as you want to buy an SD card that works for the content that you intend on putting on it. If you have a lot of MP3s and videos, take a lot of pictures and shoot a lot of videos then obviously you are going to want at least a 16gb SD card.
The class does indeed matter. If you have hundreds or thousands of images then a class 2 card would take ages for them to all load in the Gallery. Or if you use App2SD at all a class 2 card wouldn't be able to keep up with the reading and writing and the app would be sluggish.
A class 10 card in my opinion is a bit excessive, I'd personally go for a class 4 or 6.

This is very true. I have a class 2 card and loading thumbnails for artists/albums is painfully slow in mediascape. I would go for a 32 GB if you are a music fan. I have a 1800 songs on my X10 and its already full. Class 4/6 should be good, class 10 is a little excessive.

Just take the card out of the phone. There should be a 'C' printed on the card and there will be a number inside the 'C'. This is the class of your card.
I was using stock 8 GB class 2, I brought Team 16 GB class 10. Difference in performance is noticeable.
I have a class 10 8gb card and it works way better than the stock card.
Just make sure you tweak your read_ahead_kb.. Search for SD card speed improvement or speed increase.
In general, Class 4 or 6 are good enough for the application usage by phone, such HD video and phones.
I tested my Class 4 sd card, it able to transfer ~5.5mb / sec, not bad.
Yes, when price come down, I will get a Class 100 sd card too.
cheers
I'd rather the class 200.

Class 10 significantly improves the performance.
Honestly it does not matter if someone is using the SE stock rom...however since I have tried the awesome ROM created by wolfbreak...my apps stored in sd was very sluggish...had to buy a class 10 16 gig to improve the performance...
Just got a 16Gig class 4 card...goto to play with data2sd and see the quadrant!!!!!!

If you get a real kingston class 10 you will get five times the speed of a low spec class 2 generic sd card.

Real Class 10 SD cards work at 10MB/s of data transfer speed.
Class 2=2MB/s
Class 4=4MB/s
Class 6=6MB/s
Class 8=8MB/s
Class 10=10MB/s
The best are as said by others Kingston and Sandisk.
I've a Sandisk class 6 card and i get near 5,5MB/s of data transfer.
Mine is still 8gb, i want to buy another but in Brazil it's very expensive, the taxes are very high.
Got the Wintec Filemate 16gb class 10 for just under $40 at Frys Electronics and it's given me no problems. Used it in my NookColor running tons of apps and music from it without a hitch. Now it's in my X10 and with using the SD Speed Up tools, it helped alot.

Hi, im buying a 32gb sdcard for this phone but what class should i get?
I read somewhere that a class 10 is too fast to be able to run apps of it, when apps are moved to sdcard. Is that right?
If so, what class are all yours? 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10? Have you had troubles with them, or do they work fine?
Thanks

I'm using a class 10 32gb card and i've had no issue with any apps when i move them to SD card, why would an app care about the speed of an SD card? and wouldn't it be the opposite for an apps speed? (class 2 card slow to start etc)
BTW the class system isn't really important with android because fast read and writes arnt critical for apps to run fast (helps a little) so go with class 10 (there cheap anyway, plus you should get over 10MBPS read/write)

Thanks, i thought the same thing about the speed :S dunno what he was on about haha. Ill go for a class 10 one

Some people have had issues with class 10 cards as random access times can be slower. I have a class 6 and it works fine.

sorry about creating a double thread, i didn't see that one
class 4 and/or 6 for me..
got a class 4... working awesome on my r800i, 2 co workers want 1 for the Htcs phones lol!
My sdcard is class 2, and all of my apps work just as fast as if they were internally installed
I am thinking of getting SanDisk 16GB Mobile Ultra Class 10 UHS-I Micro SD SDHC like that one.
I know I will not reach 10 Class speed but I need to replace my current card and this is the only thing I found from SanDisk.
Can I expect it to perform flawlessly with HTC Desire?

I am using the same card as well, and it works perfectly. With full class 10 speeds as well.
I am using this as well... No problem at all... Getting much faster speed..
Thanks all. The reason I need to change my sd card is because right now I have a Samsung 8GB Class 6 which is fast enough in transfers but slow in initialisation and newer ICS/JB roms can't even detect it.
What rom are you using with this card?
has anybody noticed a performance increase while using a UHS-I card compared to class 10 or class 6.
Desire needs sd with high IO because of the low internal memory. Now the question, which cards have higher IO? Class 6 or 10 or UHS-I?
Im using a 16 gb uhs class 10 and no issues at all

Well, I got my own card and indeed it is working perfectly fine.
Would putting a swap partition on it decrease its lifespan noticeably?
have someone tried the 32gb class 10 version? does it work well with int2ext+ or m2sd?

"Mobile Ultra" is class 6 and "Ultra" is class 10. I don't know if there are any other differences apart from speed.
The link you gave is actually selling an "Ultra", although the title is "Mobile Ultra"
Note, I would never buy an SD card on ebay because of the number of fakes (especially Sandisk apparently)
You can get 16GB "Mobile Ultra" on Amazon for £11.45, ie same price as ebay.
Or a 32GB "Mobile Ultra" on Amazon for £22.99
Or a 32GB "Ultra" on Amazon for £18.54
No, I don't know why the class 10 is cheaper than the class 6. However... "class 6" just means that's the minimum guaranteed speed, it might be faster.
NB from what I've read, most class 10 cards don't work on the HTC Desire at all, but some do* However I've also read that internally the Desire can't read at more than 6mb/s whatever you put in there.
*People seem to have success with ADATA 16mb class 10, but someone else said their SanDisk 10 worked, whereas others say the same card didn't work. YMMV

BUT from what I've read, the HTC Desire will accept a class 10 card, but only has a class 6 transfer bus, so it can't use it any faster anyway.

Not quite right since all sandisk mobile ultra micro sd cards are UHS-1 class cards fastest cards faster than class 10.
They run at double the frequency in a UHS-1 compatible device.
Will still work in the desire just much slower. I get around class 10 speeds from my 8gb .mobile ultra

That's interesting. It would explain why they're more expensive than the class 10 cards. But if you look at this amazon page, it's listed as class 6, which is confusing.
All this talk about speed and class isn't worth much to any a2sd script.
Class system is about sequential speed I.e writing a large file and you'll get the class speed.
Writing loads of small files and I doubt you'll get your class speed.
Plus the apps on your ext4 partition could well be reading and writing from both you fat32 and ext4 partition on your SD card slowing the whole thing down.

I suppose the hope is that the higher the class the higher the random read/writes as well as sequential speeds.
But the random write performance measured on Tom's Hardware isn't encouraging (November 10, 2011 so not very current unfortunately, but maybe shows that a class 4 SanDisk isn't to be sneered at)
I was using SanDisk class 4 sd card with InsertCoin-1.1.4 Rom. After upgrading sd card to Kingston class 10, it's really improved the performance of the same Rom.

i have a kingston class 10 sd card but i feel it is not really a genuine class 10 card.. my speed on sd card tester(on market) is only 1.8mb/s write speed and 10.03mb/s read speed
my question is if i buy a true genuine sandisk micro sd class 10 card.. will it speed up my applications using int2ext/m2sd or any a2sd scripts? actually what is the speed of the internal memory of the htc desire?

AFAIK Desire supports only Class 6, so your Class 10 SD will work as 6.
You will achieve Class 10 speeds only copying with USB from PC for example.

I doubt you'd get class 10 even through the USB.
Best way to check SD card speeds is to put it in a card reader and into laptop or PC.
Checking through the HTC desire is useless as speeds can vary.
I've just tested twice with sdcard tester and got 10mbps and 3.7mbps

Yes you get full speed thru usb as it's not using Desire onboard sd controller...
If you're not getting full speed it might be ROM issue for example.
