root lost - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

rooted my phone around 2 year ago and cant remember how i did it (sdk if memory serves), anyway it appears i have lost root now, noticed there are some programs for rooting now, are any of these any good with custom roms installed?

Do you have a custom recovery? S-OFF? Unlocked bootloader? If you don't have any of those, use AAHK; look in the guide linked in my signature for help. If you do, also look at the guide; it has directions for any of those possibilities as well. AAHK won't flash a custom ROM for you though; you need to do that yourself.

as long as it can root with a custom rom installed thats all that matters, i still rermember how to flash roms

Wait, you already have a custom ROM? Are you S-OFF or S-ON? Do you have an unlocked bootloader? Do you have a custom ROM installed? It could be that somehow your superuser app and su got deleted...?

have you tried uninstalling TIBU and re installing it? The same happened to me with the last update. To check root, just use terminal emulator (from the play store) open it up and type su...if su permissions are granted you still have root.

terminal SU - Permission Denied.

Ok, then uninstall SuperSU and Superuser and reflash one of those (just one) in recovery...that should fix it.

ok, removed both superuser, created a zip, installed via recovery but still no Root acces

Try reflashing the ROM without wiping anything.

will i lose anything?

Not if you don't wipe anything. But you can back up your stuff if you want.

You need to flash a recovery(search the development thread for clockworkmod recovery)
Flash this recovery via fastboot(search the whole forum for a guide)
And then flash a ROM(or other things) of your choice via the recovery menu.
Hope this helps
Personally, I downgraded by flashing a stock 2.1 RUU, then used unrevoked 3.2 to root it and install clockworkmod.
Then just flashed a cyanogen nightly (#57). Although you can choose whatever rom you want.
I have tried with unrevoked 3 to root the phone, but at some point i got the following message:
Validation error: Backup CID is missing
any idea how to fix that?

once S-OFF, downgrading and then rooting is a lengthier process. As already stated in the post #2, after S-OFF just flash a recovery from the fast boot menu and thats all ur phone is rooted.
get the PC49IMG.ZIP file and the process from here. (most painless and secure algorithm)

Alright. I think I'm gonna get my device S-OFF soon...
So all I have to do is
1. Flash to 2.1 RUU
2. Flash a recovery via fastboot
3. Flash a new ROM
That is all right?

If you are going for Step 2, there is no need for Step 1. Just flash a recovery via Fastboot, and you are good to go with Custom ROMs, even on the updated HBoot.

I've been reading alot about this but I don't geddit. Everyone says that with hboot 1.01.0002 you can't get s-off without using the xtc clip. Are you saying you just downgraded to Android 2.1 then flashed a custom ROM

What you have heard is false. HBoot 1.01x requires XTC Clip to get S-OFF, and, only then can it be downgraded and rooted.

If i used XTC clip to S-OFF a wildfire, is it then possible to restore a rooted ROM? Or do i need to root the phone, then when i load any ROM it is rooted, because root is at a lower level?
Is root access something which is stored in the operating system or some lower level?

Root is given by the app called Superuser. Just as in linux, every program that wants to do something that needs root rights, has to ask for it. In android that permission is "tunneld" by the superuser, which asks you if you want to grant an app root access, and then gives it to that app with your permission. But of course, the only way that superuser can grant root access, is when it is propperly installed, and has some files in the /system folder. Which is not possible without root permissions
So: if you are s-off, you can flash a recovery image trough fastboot (working with unrevoked gives you the custom recovery right away) by the adb command "flastboot flash recovery " (google for "cyanogenmod wiki flastboot" if you are planning it, it is really nice explaned). Trough that recovery you can apply some kind of an "update.zip", which installes the right superuserfiles on your system anx changes nothing else. Notice me if you want those files, I know where to find them here on xda.
From that moment on, when an app asks for root permission, you get a popup from the superuser app to ask if you really want to grant that app such permissions or not: if yes, the app has root access now!
This is all based on my experience with the stock ROM, don't know how the process works in CM or wildpuzzle.
Erwin
Edit: and if you want to delete or modify rom specific things (like htc stock app), you can connect your phone to your computer, mount your system as read/write by the command "adb remount" and then delete it trough adb commands. No need to go trough recovery for this.
Perhaps the same is possible if you have a file manager that can handle rooted phones, but not sure about that.

[Q] help rooting! puhhhllleeeeaaassseeeee

ROK here's the story. I rooted my DINC when I first got it two years ago, well my girlfriend now wants hers rooted.
I read the wiki and all that. But everytime I try it gives me an error message after the first phone boot after trying to gain root access... error can't root is your firmware too new?
Now my steps are.
Plug phone in.
Install phone drivers. (I think this may be where i went wrong)
run unrevoked3
It does its stuff and reboots phone into hboot continues to do it's thing.
Reboots phone again.
Starts asking fir root.
Then I get the error.
Can you tell what I'm doing wrong?
Do I have to install the hboot drivers on my windows 7 machine when the phone is in hboot?
Help!
Ok first,I don't believe unrevoked supports the newest firmware update, but there are other methods...
second, if unrevoked completes successfully, try manually flashing the recovery, if that completes successfully, then make a backup and flash a new rom..
If it boots up however, try downloading superuser and install it, if it works, should be good to go

Are you s-off? If so flash cwm recovery thru hboot as a PB31IMG.zip. http://dinc.does-it.net/Recoveries/CWM_5.0.2.0/PB31IMG.zip. Then if you can access recovery use it to flash the su binary, installing the su app does not install the binary. You can go to preferencec in the su app and try installing it from there, but it usually fails. You can get the lates flashable one here. http://dinc.does-it.net/SuperUser/SuperUser_3.0.7.zip

Root and s-off are two different things, and you dont need rom manager to access recovery. However if your s-on you dont have a custom recovery to flash things in anyways.
Yes when you install the drivers you need to be in hboot to get the correct drivers.
If you ran unrevoked and it compleeted successfully you should have root and s-off. I would make sure the drivers are right, and then run unrevoked again.

OK. Unrevoked always failed. So. Must be the hboot drivers installing incorrectly.

How do I tell if my G2 is rooted?

Hi,
I have a g2 that I bought off eBay. I messed around trying to follow the rooting/s-off guide here but kept getting the error about not downgrading enough (the one where md5-1 and md5-3 are the same). I somehow managed to get CM9 on to it (Mimcry 1.3.2) and its running all good. I have superuser as an app on my menu.
However when I try to get superuser to gain temp root access or I type su into the terminal emulator I get an error. If I click on temp root in the superuser app it crashes and the terminal emulator gives me

While you may have the superuser app, did you ever push the su and busybox binaries to the phone? What guide did you follow to root the phone? If I were to go by just the hboot alone I would say it looks like it was never downgraded and exploited, since typically you'd see S-OFF, or an engineering rom if someone has downgraded and rooted it.
What's the recovery you are using? what guide are you using for the rooting part? etc. If you flashed mimicry then it should have come with su/busybox/etc unless the phone prevented the flashing of the boot/kernel (Which would be typical with a stock bootloader).

I followed the guide on the xda wiki. In another post I made when I was having trouble downgrading, you told me that I shouldn't have to because of already having s-off and the radio was on. (heres the op - thanks for your advice by the way).

I somehow managed to get clockwordmod on as my recovery but cannot access it without using adb; my hardware buttons dont seem to do anything in the bootloader menu so I have to run "adb reboot recovery" to get into clockwork mod, which then allows me to use the optical trackpad to navigate.

Help! Droid Incredible "Half-Way" Rooted

Hey all,
So I upgraded to a Droid DNA a couple of months ago, so I decided to root my OG Droid Incredible (SLCD).
I followed the guide here: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488351) to the letter. When I got to the step where I ran unrevoked, it flashed ClockWorkMod recovery, but didn't finish the process. So what happened is now I have ClockWorkMod recovery, and a Stock ROM that doesn't have Root access. (I downloaded a couple of different root checkers from the market and I got "no root access" results".
I tried flashing the stock recovery using the PB31IMG.zip method, but in HBOOT my phone won't recognize the file on my Micro SDcard, even though it's on the root, and properly named.
Can anyone help me get my phone completely rooted, or at least back to stock-stock so I can use a different method?
P.S I did check all MD5 sums, and the phone still works perfectly....it's just in a weird "limbo" state of rooted or not.
Thanks!

If you have cwm flashed then just flash superuser http://dinc.does-it.net/Superuser/SuperUser_3.1.1.zip, thru cwm. Then you will be rooted. Also remember to install busybox from the market.
Alternativley you could just flash a rom of your choosing, as roms come pre rooted and with busybox.

Boot to hboot (vol down + power), it should say at the top. Give me all the info there. You may need to reformat your sdcard fat32 to get the ruu to work. Try going to menu settings applications manage applications all tab find superuser and clear its data. Then open superuser go to preferences and select binary update.

Quick question, since I already have CWM recovery, do I need to reflash it? it is the same version (5.0.2.0). I also flashed the super user zip you posted earlier. should I reflash the one in the guide?
Thanks again so much for your help!

I would reflash it as it may not be complete do to not being unlocked. It only takes a few secs anyways.

Alright,
So I unlocked successfully, flashed su.zip, reflashed CWM recovery, and got to the busy box step.
I'm using jrummy's installer from the market, and it's telling me I have root access. But when I try to install it, it doesn't work. It just sits there "installing busybox". I also used a rootchecker app and that one says I still don't have root access, even though the busybox installer says I do. Superuser also tells me I don't have root access when I go to update the binaries.

[q] s-off reroot...

Last August I rooted my DHD using AAHK. No problems for a complete beginner. Had things running sweet. 4ext. tried a number of different roms. flashed radios and RILs; again, no probs. but then for some reason I returned to stock using RUU_Ace_H3G_UK_1.37.771.3_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_158897_signed.exe - still running this now.
I have S-OFF and now want to REROOT!
Is there a guide to Rerooting that I can follow or can someone give me the basic steps as I don't want to mess things up, it was a while ago since I first rooted the DHD.
1more thing... my DHD was locked to 3-UK before root. Now, I can only use Virgin, Orange, GiffGaff, T-mobile, Tesco, but not 3. this bugs! Anyone got any ideas as to why this is?
Failing that... Rerooting Toot using AAHK (if poss.) would be great cos I have a laptop dedicated/configured for AAHK already.
any HELP will be appreciated - TANX!

You don't need AAHK if you're still S-Off. If I remember correctly, to root your current ROM, just push a su manager app (like Superuser.apk or SuperSU.apk) and a su binary. Alternatively, if you want to flash a custom ROM, fastboot flash a recovery img and flash a ROM from there.

You need to get the 4ext img and fastboot flash it, not just install from apk. More detailed instructions are in the thread linked in my signature. Look in the guide in post #7, bottom of page 9, "S-Off no recovery" section.
You need to search for the apk and su binary; I don't have copies. It will only root your current ROM with no customization. If you're going to fastboot flash 4ext you don't need to bother with this, since any ROM you flash from recovery will overwrite your current ROM with the apk and su binary.
OK - kewl!

For anyone else interested in S-OFF REROOT...
GuyInTheCorner gives instructions on how to do this... ROOTING WHEN YOU'RE ALREADY S-OFF (with no custom recovery)
So if you're already S-OFF (either HTC DEV or AAHK [Ace Hack Kit]) but you're not rooted, don't despair! Its a relatively easy fix, all you need is a little time. . Now you'll have to have a card reader for this part. Using a card reader, place a PD198IMG.zip on the root of your SD Card (this means directly onto the SD Card, NOT IN A FOLDER) that contains a custom recovery. What you want to do now is to boot into HBOOT (Volume up+Power). Once you've done that it will automatically try to detect a PD198IMG.zip (which is already on your SD Card). It will flash it and you'll have yourself a custom recovery. Now using the volume buttons to navigate up and down respectively navigate to the RECOVERY option and press the power button. Now you're in your custom recovery, open the mounts section and mount your SD Card to your PC. Now download a SuperUser.zip and flash it in recovery. Congrats! You've flashed a custom recovery and are now rooted! Enjoy
If I helped, hit that thanks button!

banana g.... point taken!
I didn't use HTCDEV to unlock the bootloader I used AAHK to achieve S-OFF! So, I should be OK with the procedure you and GuyInTheCorner refer to - yeah?
Achieving root is easy. The hard stuff is to get S-OFF...
If you have unlocked the bootloader or S-OFF'ed, then flash SU in CWM or 4ext and that's it.

if your phone is booting normally, use the 4ext updater. If not flash CWM first and then a custom rom. From the android UI use 4ext updater.

What happened? Did you try to fastboot flash a recovery.img? That should work as long as you're S-Off.
To install Superuser on a working ROM, find a Superuser.apk and a su binary. adb push the Superuser.apk to /system/app and the su binary to .../xbin, I think? There are guides around XDA.

I tried to fastboot flash 4ext by placing the 4ext/recovery zip renamed to PD198IMG.ZIP in the root path of the SDcard then vol-down&power but hboot does not pick it up.
I then tried the 4ext updater but there were errors; so I don't know what's happening - I've almost given up and thinking about updating from FROYO to GingerBread OTA as a last resort and be done with that.
I read that S-OFF should be easy to root but that's not what I'm finding.
there is not enough information about unroot by returning to stock then rerooting for me to feel confident about doing it correctly so I might just go GingerBread - period!

ok, first it is PD98IMG.zip and not PD198IMG and you have an apk that can be downloaded from here: http://www.4ext.net/get.php?apk
You just install it using a file manager and the run it. Download the lastest recovery, flash it from there and you are done.

Yeah, that is one of the possiblities. However, he should be able to flash CWM in fastboot, SU and then flash 4ext as he is S-OFF.
