[Q] Questions on backup procedures etc... - Samsung Captivate Glide

Hmm, basically everything I had written was wrong besides the links.
If someone reads this post, the real key to ensuring efs backup is probably install recovery and backup, also use a kernel that performs auto-backup of efs for flash seems like a good idea.

Is SD Backup a full backup of the ROM?

Hello!
I read this posting:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1014335&postcount=1
I wonder if this is a good way to make an upgrade safe. Does it realy backup everything?
I should buy me a small miniSD-card, make a backup first and put this miniSD-card somewhere save. If I flash a new ROM and run into troubles some day, I could just take the sd-card and get back to the current state. Is that right? Does this backup includes ROM, ExROM, IPL/SPL, splashscreens and everything? Will it be CID locked again?
If this is true, this information should be added to all flashing tutorials.
Yes, I tried to get this information by seaching. Maybe I am just to stupid?!
Thank you very much!

Does realy noone knows what the SD backup realy does?
I saw the hint that people should get an SD backup from someone if the bricked their telephone. If it does not restore the whole thing you would get a mixture of your old ROM and the one from your friend. OK, it is better than a bricked one and you can flash now (hopefully).
Any information would be great. I would spend the money for an extra miniSD card if it would get me on the safe side.

As my personal exp.
The answer is No,
The stroyline is like this,
I got mess up with my sound driver, so i do hard reset and before that i backup everything.
After i restore i get back my sound driver and all my S/W, all cracked, so i think personally it DIND'T backup the ROM(my case my bad ROM)

[Q] Clockwork recovery and full wipes?

Suffice to say i'm a bit unclear about this... my scenario
currently running leedroid 2.3d with ext3 app partion and I wanted to test out some of the gingerbread ports so far.
If I do a nandroid wipe, and the clear the app partion, and wipe through clockwork, install the new gingerbread rom, decide I dont like it. Can I still restore from the nandroid backup and have lost nothing... I realize it may sound like an obvious question but I couldnt find any conformation on that and really dont want to loose my current setup
Yes, assuming you nandroid before you do the full wipe
To be clear -
Nandroid backups take a complete image of the phone (ROM, apps, homescreen settings...) which is used to put everything right back where it was before you started messing with it.
Take a backup before you do anything, personally I have about 5 or 6 now (usually 2 or 3 on the phone itself, and a couple of trusted older ones copied onto my laptop) so I can get back to a working system. I keep a spreadsheet list of exactly what they are (ROM, setup, kernel if appropriate) so I know which one to restore to. Maybe it's just me but I find "2011-02-02-15.43.53" less than helpful as a restore point name.
Once you have a backup I'd also suggest rebooting, connecting to your computer and backing up the contents of your SD card. So far I've had one card die completely on me, luckily for me there was nothing irreplaceable on it. Backups, like all other files, can be copied from one SD card to another.
Thanks to both of you that was exactly the clarification I was looking for

Is there any way to backup a non-bootable device? (Follow-up to Bricked Phone Thread)

This question sounds really stupid, but I want to know if there is anyway to backup a non-bootable device using a PC. Prior to flashing a MOD, I did backup, only to notice that the Nandroid backup made was not a complete backup due to the lack of space on my SD Card. I want to keep all of my recent messages, new contacts etc. but it seems I cannot find any way to do so.
Help is needed! If you do not get me, please read this thread below about my bricked device.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1750071
If you know how to or have any advice, please respond ASAP! Thanks in advance!
you dont have much option here..nandroid backup is the only way now..get a hold of card reader..and make some space in your sd card and then do a nand backup..
but looking at your previous thread, best way wouldve been flashing back arc s lockscreen files.
If u already flashed 4.0.3 then there is no way to recovery your data..anyways contacts will be backed up on google server..

Everything that you should have backed up

What should everyone back up before flashing new roms?
I think the most important one would be IMEI but i dont know how to back it up since EFS backup isnt enough according to a lot of people
so my question is how can i backup imei correctly and what other things should i have backed up in case something goes wrong

noob question about backing up roms

I have just rooted my phone yesterday. This is the first time I have ever done this and want to make sure I do everything correctly so that i dont mess up my phone. I would like to install the MOAR rom on my phone but I guess I should back up my current ROM first? I don't really care about losing my status in any of my games or sms texts. I just want an easy way to return to a usable phone if something goes wrong while flashing MOAR (or if I dont like the MOAR rom, return to stock ROM that I am on). Does this mean I can bypass titanium backup and only backup to CWM? Also, can I use the method in this video (i9300)?
edit: apparently Im not allowed to post links but the title of the youtube video is "How to Backup and Restore ROM on Rooted Galaxy S3! "
In the video, i9300 phone is put in recovery mode (volume up+home+power keys) and then the phone goes to clockwork mod recovery. you can back up to internal or external SD card. Is the method the same with Sprint galaxy s3?
Also, I have 1.9 GB of space on my SD card. Is that enough space to back up the ROM using CWM?
One last question, If I want to install the add ons with the MOAR ROM, do I have to flash that at the same time as the ROM or could I install it after (im assuming using the same technique as flashing the ROM)?

You can use the same *process* used there. Just make sure to NEVER EVER flash a ROM, ZIP, THEME, APP, etc. that's made for the International s3 (i9300 and some other model number too)
As for the backup part, yes, you can skip Titanium Backup. TB is mainly used to restore apps/data across roms. So if you're just trying out MOAR and want to make a backup that you can revert to just in case, a backup in recovery will be enough because TB will only backup settings + data + apps and not the entire state of your system, which a Nandroid/backup from recovery will do.
Oh, and just for your own learning benefit, a backup from recovery (commonly referred to as a Nandroid), saves the EXACT state of your system. So lets say you had just finished moving a bunch of apps from one homescreen to another. The nandroid will record all this information EXACTLY because it creates a mirror image of your system as it is at the time of backup. All SMS messages will be in the same order, times, etc, all apps will be at the same version that you left it. Everything will be as if you had put your phone down and come back some hours later.
As for the tweaks, the majority of the time you can flash them whenever you please, be it right after ROM installation or two weeks after ROM installation. Pretty much the only exception is when the dev explicitly says "flash this RIGHT after flashing the ROM" or something like that. If the dev doesnt say that, you can flash the mods/tweaks whenever you please.
One last thing, next time please post Questions in the Q&A forum. Thanks

Wow, thanks for the speedy and thorough response. So, I install the tweaks exactly like the ROMS? Also, sorry about posting in the wrong section...im a noob
Haha, no problem, first-time posters tend to post questions in the General forum, or in the Development forums. Make sure you DO NOT do the latter lol (even if you have a question about a rom/mod/other thing that IS in the development sub-forum). You will get severely reprimanded by members that can be not-so-nice.
But yeah, just flash in recovery. Things that you just need to flash in recovery are generally called "flashables" or "flashable zips", and the great majority of mods are. And same exception applies here, if they dont say that it's a flashable, dont try to flash it! Sometime the "mod" will be set up in a way that you need to download it and copy/paste to the right location, just make sure you read and ask if you are unsure :good:

Thanks for moving it for me.
Another question for anyone,
I backed up my ROM on internal SD card and moved it to my computer. There is a folder in my files->clockwork mod->blobs and backup.
Can I delete both blobs and backup? or would I lose clockworkmod if I do that? thanks
Dunno about blobs, but backup is only created when you do a nandroid. Removing it will not hurt CWM.
I use TWRP, so can't comment on blobs... but I used to delete the backup folder regularly.
