Hello
My question is this, i would like to know something about this connections.
Is normal that the phone never is on 3g? Because imagine if i change to 2 g connection i get the E network but if hi uncheck the 2 g i get only H and H plus but never the 3 g symbl.
Is this H the same like 3g?
Because on my last phone, ideos x5, when i choose the 3 g connection i get the 3g on idle and h on full speed.
Was hi clear enough?
yes, H is equivalent to 3g and E is equivalent to 2g.
3g= third generation = hspa & hsdpa networks
2G
G - GPRS
E - EDGE
3G
3G - UMTS
H - HSDPA/HSPA
H+ - HSPAP
Your cell tower probably doesn't support UMTS and only runs on HSDPA
Thanks guys. now i understand

HSPA Signal Analyzer or Log?
So I have a question. I've had a lot of connection speed issues with my GNex. When i'm in full H coverage (Signal indicates HSPA:15+) I rarely get more than 1-2 MB/S downstream. The Tmobile rep says I should have great coverage here (Macon, GA). My Wife's 3G phone is faster than my GNex. When I did the dial codes to force my phone to 3G, I got really nice speeds on Speedtest.net.
So what i'd l ike to do is somehow analyze the signal when I'm in HSPA mode. I'm curious if the phone keeps any kind of log or record of the transmissions between the phone and the provider. Is there any app out there that will log, for instance: lost packets, authentification errors, or any other things like that?
I've searched high and low and haven't found a thread yet that mentions any type of signal log (other than perhaps a graphical display of the amount of signal you have). I'm not concerned with signal strength...what I'm thinking is somehow, my phone isn't playing nice on the TMobile network.
thanks in advance! Rooted options and debug mode options are certainly welcome and encouraged. I will without a doubt need something running deeper than in User space.
Typically its not signal that determines your down and upstream speeds but whether or not the market you live in supports HSDPA and whether or not its optimized for faster speeds. I did read that you forced your phone into 3G and you got descent speeds afterwards. Was this on the same area of your residence or where you experience issues? Do note that with T-Mobile, 3G and HSDPA are the same, however there might be more than one UMTS/HSDPA band in your area.

There is good signal in my area. T-Mobile site says excellent 4g here. A nexus 4 at their store was consistently getting almost 20mb/s down... So I should definitely be getting faster speeds...
The website is a horrible guide to go by. I'm marked for excellent reception yet I only get 3 down and 2 up.
Have I helped? Don't forget to make love to that "Thanks" button!
OK but as I've said... Other HSPA+ phones in my area are getting 15-20mb/s.
See... what is up with this!!????
I know the signal bars say 3G but when the test was running it was full bars of hspa. What in the world?
My phone info is attached too

If another Galaxy Nexus side to side performs better then there is an issue. Also keep in mind that the max a GSM GN will pull is hardly ever going to surpass 10mbps since its an HSPA+21 headset while newer devices are HSPA+42, which have higher theoretical speeds.

Like I said, its the market or the towers you are connected to. There's nothing you can do to about it except wait and hope the perform performance upgrades on the towers.
My GN:
Mom's T989(SGSII)
Signal:
Same house, side to side tests.
I've been to downtown Houston and my speeds nearly double.

If I could routinely get above 3mb/s I would be ecstatic... If I ever hit 10 I would jump up and down giggling like a school girl.

I was just wondering if there was an app that showed when I was actully on HSPA+ or just 3G cause as far as I can tell its either H, E or G. I've yet to see 3G. Id like to be able to see without going to settings, about phone, status. Cause I want to run speed tests on HSPA+.

I think if you go to phone status. You would be connected under umts which would be 3g or hspa as hspa+ but hspa n umts its technically the same thing. It never shows hspa+ even though I live within the coverage with hspa+
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
That would explain why my speed test have been the same on umts and hspad on the status section =( thx mate
Sent from my G2, XDA app =)
When in a HSPA+ area your phone should show HSDPA under About Phone>Status>Mobile Network Type. The 'H' indicator will show no matter what 3G network you're connected to. I'm assuming T-Mobile did this to avoid confusion between 3G and HSPA+ which is technically still 3G.

I have been using Netswidget. It seems to do the job, possibly a little buggy still at times. But it does show edge, umts and hsdpa on it. I even saw gprs the other day for a brief moment out in the sticks. But it seems to work fine for me.
I have mobile signal widget. Changes icon for edge, 3g, and hspa.

Max download 0.89!
Hello,
I am new to Android - do I have to turn on something to get higher speeds?
I consitently get 0.89 no matter where I am.
In fact, our region is listed as 4G speeds on TMobile website... McLean VA.
I am thinking a bad phone, maybe? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Mobile Signal Widget for me also

Just because you are listed on the coverage map as being in the HSPA+ area the towers might not be actally all set up for the top speeds. I live in Massachusetts in a suburb of Boston where we are on the coverage map as being in HSPA+ area but the next town over is ony getting top speeds of around 950 kbps download. The network has not been stretched out to it's maximum yet, you will be getting your speed probably very soon. It is still very spotty. This has been my findings in the Boston area. One town in HSPA+ will get 750 MBPS download (very fast) and just a short distance away will only get top speeds of only 950 kbps (not bad) It will get better soon.

Im also in VA and dont see "4g speeds" but it depends on certain areas just because your in "4g" area doesnt mean your going to see it, like if your inside in a building, or just in a bad coverage area. Ive actually did a speedtest under 2 different cell towers and the most I ever got was 5down. They say the g2 is capable of doing like 14, but I dont think anyone is ever going to get that I would say 10 the most.
In the phone manual it shows the different types of networks the phone would show. This G, E, H, and H+. It wont show 3g because H is the same as 3g and H+ is "4g".

Hi,
Might be one of a few having the galaxy nexus GT-I9250 in Canada.. I tuned on the phone and it found Fido and it worked. I get 3g and H on the signal bar. How do i k ow if I have hspa + or 4g lte on the phone? Will it show 4g or H+?
Speed test gets only around 1 meg down...
Fido and rogers are one, according to service map by rogers HSPA+ is in Ottawa and soon LTE. Will they prevent Fido users from 4g?
Any settings I have to enter on phone to get the higher speeds? Anyone in Canada has this working?
Thanks a lot for any insight u might have...

forget LTE it will not work (for CDMA networks like Bell/Telus)
get the GSM version to work
The phone doesn't have LTE. It has GSM and HSPA+.
As far as speeds, you're going to have to talk to other Fido users in the same area and see their speeds (or other phones you own with the same SIM card). There may be some changes to the APNs you can do to increase speeds, again you're going to want to ask Fido users.
as for knowing how fast you are going
it's simply a matter of speed
in Canada normal H+ speed is around 8 Mbps down at best
if you seed speed that goes beyond 16 Mbps, you are most likely on "4G"
there's no real 4G if you check Wikipedia
all the current LTE / 4G technology are fake
they are more like 3.5G = H+, so "4G/LTE" is actually more like 3.75G
the real 4G is on WiMax radio which is not very popular in many places and phones
Is there a version that supports lte? All over web they say galaxy nexus lte...
If anyone lives in ottawa and has Fido, please share ur experience and settings.

There is 1 version with LTE. And that is made for Verizon USA. You're probably only going to see the GSM/HSPA+ version in Canada.
Thanks all. OK, so hspa + I will forget about lte..
How do i know if my phone is connected to hspa+?
Will it has a plus sign on signal bar. If i go to settings, then about phone, then status. It shows the current connection, what should it be? Anybody has hspa+ can tell me what they see in status in setting and the signal icon on top?
I will be happy with around 8mb

So under connection it'll say "EDGE" on 2G, "UMTS" on 3G, and "HSDPA"/"HSPA+" on 3.5G/4G/H+ (depends what your carrier wants to call it).
i believe he was speaking about the ICON indicator on the status bar
it'll be either 3G in most areas, and in really go areas you'll see H+ or 4G depending on the ROM how it was coded for the signal quality strength
once you start flashing custom ROMs you'll notice that will change too, depending on the ROM Dev, it's all cosmetic eye candy
if you want to know the real deal install Open Signal from Market
it has a nice widget that tells you the true tower capacity
It fluctuates between
Umts:3 and hspa:11
The reason I ask about the plus is that there is hspa only.. no plus and i am not sure if the hspa:11 means plus or no plus.

Like I said earlier, if under "status" you see UMTS then you're on 3g. If you see HSPA you're on "4g". What that means for speeds is up to Fido.
The ROM just has "H" icon I believe. You won't see H+.
First of all, Bell and Rogers are GSM networks and they support LTE, however the phone itself only supports HSPA+ 21mb/s. Only the CDMA Verizon version of the Galaxy Nexus will support LTE.
Note: This is only as far as my knowledge extends to, and I don't accept any responsibility if anything goes wrong
Thanks for all the replies. I had a nexus one which only supports hspa, not hspa+ and i used to see Hspa there. That is why I was concerned if the hspa I am seeing is using the plus protocol which supports a much faster speed than hspa. This is why seeing an h only, or hspa in connection didn't give me a good feeling as i had it on my nexus one. Its the hspa+ that gives me the extra speed on the galaxy nexus and i wonders if its being used.
Thanks for all your help and comment guys.. I appreciate it
It seems like the Verizon LTE version will not work on Fido/Rogers or Bell/Telus (each of which seems to have their own LTE network)
If you want to do a good speed test while around the BC area, go to Whistler and then do a speedtest.net test (via the app).
I've had 6MB/s down on standard HSPA.
Thanks for the info.
I found that in ottawa if i use spedtest.net app I only get between 1 and 2. If I use open signal, another App on market, I get around 6mb/sec.
Thanks.
I'm using Open Signal Maps to see my connection. Apparently I have -95 dBm thru -104 dBm. I heard that -100 is practically no signal.
I'd also lyk to add that I have seen my phone drop to 1X. I didn't even know that existed in cities. Is that Sprint Version of a GSM phone on 1G? I'm sorry, I'm a previous Tmo customer, where we had 1G(.005Mbps)), 2G(.5Mbps), 3G, 4G. Here on Sprint, it seems lyk it's 1X, 3G, 4G.
I have an attachment of my closest tower. Shouldn't I be way above what I'm getting? The box is me, the circle is a McDonalds I go to. When I'm at McDonalds, my data speeds flourish. I see those 10Mb 4G speeds with full bars. At my house, I only get 3G. And I'm lucky if I get that. Sometimes it drops to 1X. Luckily we have WiFi 10Mb speeds at home.
This, however raises a huge question. Why do I have to be SO close just to get good signal? I mean, the fact that my phone is dropping to 1X means there's something up, right?
P.S. I know it's not called 1G and all that. I'm just saying that for those to easily understand. So you don't have to make a post correcting me.

The Open Signal app is not that accurate add far as location. Many times it would locate my tower in the middle of a lake. Data speeds vary greatly depending on distance, tower traffic, etc. 1x is what we sprint users call 2G.

1X= 1xRTT which is a voice/text network. it SOMETIMES works with web, albeit painfully slow. and just incase you didnt know, the ''G's'' only stand for "generation", so really, you could say 1G=talk, 2G=text, 3G=web, 4G= faster web.

Yea, but I mapped it, lyk looked at the visual and saw a tower there. I understand the whole network traffic and all, but when I go to work, my location is farther, but I still connect to that same tower, and I still get better reception. It's seeming lyk there is something at my house causing my phone HORRIBLE reception. That's the only thing I can think of. I don't know what's going on. -_-
It just seems that all the places I rest, by that I mean hang out, it seems I have no reception, but when I'm at the store or some place random I have great access. The more convenient places, but that's not very practical. This is making me want to break off this family plan and go back to Tmo.
Call Sprint and inquire about the Airave or search for that term on this forum. That device will fix your low signal issue where you hang out and they'll probably give it to you for free instead of lyk losing you as a customer
I know that 4g aka WiMax runs at 2.6Ghz frequency. 3g runs at a much lower frequency. The higher the frequency the worse the signle is at penetrating building and obsticals and is drastically reduced in effectiveness the farther away you are from the tower. See Verision uses LTE which used like 900Mhz i beleive which penetrates deeply into buildings and has a much farther range. Sprint is making the transistion to LTE on a 700Mhz frequency band i beleive which will be the best 4g out. Should be completed by the end of 2013 but i beleive it may take a bit longer than that. As for 3g and 1x getting a very weak signal can led to a tower not having a strong enough signal to support data of 3g. Also some towers are older and havent been upgraded to the 3rd generation of wireless data as a previous poster stated 1g 2g 3g is first, second and third generation techknology. What is weird and doesnt make sense to me ans many other people is that how many bars you have does NOT necessarily coinside with how fast your 3g connection will be. I and thousands of others have learned that even if you have full bars your 3g may to slow as snails and i have had 1 bar to no bars and gotten better 3g speed that certain places with full bars. Some of it has to do with weather, obstacle and how up to date the tower is. Like i said there are still older towers out there that don't even support 3g still. Hope this helpa you a little and im sorry that even pro's i have talked to cant say for sure why full bars and almost no bars doesnt always mean greater and less 3g speed necessarily :-(
hello, I was just wondering if there was any app that will allow me to turn off hspa+ on my GSM galaxy nexus? I prefer using 3G only

in an area of low signal, you're going to spend more power trying to have a stable "H" connection rather than "3G". Back in the SGS1 days i remember it did actually have a little but noticeable effect on battery.
if you watch careful, when you have a low "H" signal it will once in a while drop back to 3G...3G is way better than Edge or GPRS but not as fast as HSDPA which goes to 20+ mbps, whereas 3G AFAIK hovers around 700-800kbps.

Its like saying wifi b drains less power than wifi g in low signal. If its true someone would have to explain cause i dont understand how it could be...

probably radio uses more power to keep a good (faster H) connection in a low signal area before giving up and falling back on 3G.
every time i browse the net on my Note 2 I'm getting "H+" on the status bar in my area while at the same time whenever i call someone i get 3G at the same place, so what is the difference between them? which is better? sorry if it is a noob quastion
H+ is for HSDPA+, which delivers much higher speeds than normal 3G. Technically it is an upgraded 3G network. so if you have H+ then your network is faster than if you get only 3G. and H+ is used only for data download. so you will not see it in normal voice calls.
Based on your network, Note II can handle H+ speeds up to 42Mbps. 3G is only 384kbps.

Capable of 42Mbps!? I can't imagine anyone ever gets anywhere near that. I only get 35Mbps on my home computer with cable internet.
With H+ in my area, I generally get somewhere around 3Mbps maybe a little higher.
What is the max speed of LTE supposed to be?
Now that I know my phone is capable of 42Mbps (which is faster then my home connection), I really have no problem with not having an LTE phone. Especially since the max speed is probably as probable as seeing a unicorn.
Not to put a damper on it, but H+ doesnt mean DCHSPA as my N7100 shows that symbol and its not DCHSPA capable.

That's because H+ means HSPA+. Unless that's what DCHSPA is, but I've never heard it called that before. Even then, are you sure about that? HSPA+ is listed in the specs for this phone.
HSDPA, 42 Mbps; HSUPA, 5.76 Mbps; LTE, Cat3, 50 Mbps UL, 100 Mbps DL
H+ is faster than 3g without a doubt
DCHSDPA is known as dual channel ie three uk are dishing it out but us n7100 owners nothing to get excited over its not supported..
Mainly only lte models have dchsdpa only a couple of non lte devices have it

Well, that sort of clears it up. (Although I don't fully get it, I sorta do) Not like it really matters though. No one is going to get anywhere close to what those technologies are capable of anyways. If they ever do, we will probably all be on our next device anyways(probably more like a few devices down the road).
