Hi, I read somewhere in the forum that battery performance has something to do with letting the battery have enough time to cache and re-calibrate in between installs (of roms). I would like to know more about this. How do I find out about this? My CM 10.1 battery isn't as good as stock Samsung.

Batteries are dumb & there's no such thing as " calibrating " one.
Never, Ever run the battery down to nothing intentionally, thinking that this is a good idea

This is a semi general android question... but i have a galaxy nexus... and that's what I'll be paying with...so....
I am currently testing out ROMs... mostly apex and its previous incarnations...
I was wondering if there is any downside to flash ROMs often? Like once or twice a week, as far as longevity of the device or its rank management or " snappiness"?
Thanks for the info!
You will be fine. From what I understand it takes your battery a couple of days to "adjust" to your rom properly and display accurately

and if not you can calibrate your battery using battery calibration.

Hey I am on build 20 or AOKP so I have rebuilt mine at least twenty times but probably a lot more because I have tried ever rom available. I think of it like rebuilding my laptop, I don't think it does any harm at all but over time the device will deteriorate just like any other hardware device.
NAND flash is susceptible to write wear and will degrade over time. Frequent ROM flashing will increase the write rate to the NAND and over time the storage performance will decrease.
I have not measured the impact myself.
what sillow said is what is worrying me mostly...i will probably end up keeping one stable build and only reflashing once a month or something of the nature just to get updates....
I know that hardware performance will deteriorate over time like any other device...the only thing is that i'm in Canada...so...yeah, three year contracts...hehe
i'd like to have my phone survive at least 2+ years comfortably...hehe
minipaolo - do you mean the battery calibration app? i'm using cwm recovery and there is an option to wipe the battery stats from the recovery, which i think is just what the app does, if i'm not mistaken? (other than showing stats, of course...)

There has recently been a google+ post from one of the google developers who said that deleting you're battery stats has no influence whatsoever. Your battery will automatically calibrate itself, so no need to use a special app or delete the stats.
Anyway, good question in the OP. I can imagine it decreases the lifespan, but I can't imagine that it's decreased by a lot -or maybe just wishful thinking-
haha...exactly, let's just hope if there is an impact, that it's quite minimal...
I've been flashing roms ever since I got my first Android phone all the way up to the Galaxy Nexus now. Never had a problem.
Hey guys I'm kind of new to the rom world and let me say i LOVE IT. So much stuff you can do with the android. I'm on a i747 galaxy s3 and I've just downloaded the Pacman rom.I've downloaded other roms so i know i flashed this one correctly. I even re flashed it again last night. Both yesterday and tonight my battery went to 100%-%50 in one hour. After i charged it up it would decline 20 percent in one hour. I look at the time screen time on and to see if anything is waking up my phone excessively. And all sings say to no. Any tips? I feel like I'm back in pre ics days haha.

when you flash a new ROM it is recommended to wipe Cache, Dalvik, Factory Reset and System. If you've done that you should be okay with the installation portion.
Have you modified the kernel at all, have you over clocked anything?
Go to the play store and download BetterBatteryStats. This will help you determine the cause.

Yeah i have. When i installed i did the whole wipe thing. And I'm useing gsm batter monitor. All the readings are normal which is the weird part to me. And no i haven't over clocked (No need to imo) and haven't modified the kernel. I know that on previous androids you would have to do a wipe batter stats. I actually tried looking for that in CMW but i wasn't able to find it. Would you have to wipe the battery stats using "batter calibration" or wiping it manually in CMW? Or is that even necessary for galaxy s3s?

I would also recommend using Better Battery Stats as it is the best one I think. I always use the battery calibration app after I flash a new ROM. It usually takes a couple days or so anyways to have the new ROM settle in and everything. After a couple days you should see your battery life where it should be and not draining so fast depending on what your settings are.
Battery calibration is a myth and has been confirmed by Google themselves. Its all over the forum and wholly unnecessary. Those apps are useless. The only way to truly let your battery stats "calibrate" is to let the ROM and kernel settle into the phone after a few charge cycles.
Here's the Google+ discussion by one of Google's people: https://plus.google.com/u/0/105051985738280261832/posts/FV3LVtdVxPT
If you want to keep "calibrating" your battery for the warm and fuzzies, its your time and device.

Wow thats interesting. Everywhere i go people say that battery calibration is a necessary part when switching roms. Just out of curiosity what do you do for better battery life ? Basically what you use and not use settings wise.

Everyone's battery life varies. Honestly, it doesn't matter the ROM. The kernel does play a part in it but its how YOU use the phone, display brightness, sync, etc. Way too many factors.
As for me, I get about the same life on most ROM's I use after letting the phone settle for a few days. The only constant I have is the kernel I use which is in my signature. Lately, I've settled on one ROM as the dev is on top of his game with this device. That ROM is also in my sig.
As per title. Battery will drain .... Quickly !!! Then when I plug in to charge it instantly changes to over 50% charged. It will then charge to 100 (which I guess is actually less than 50% in reality).
I have tried various ROMs. I believe the battery is empty, just don't understand the instant reading of over 50% ??
I would assume the battery is done for. But I would try to drain battery boot into recovery And wipe battery stats. I've heard wiping the stats doesn't ddo anything useful..but its worth a shot.

Thanks. I was going to try resetting the stats but so many people say that does nothing .,... Have tried flashing 4.3 and will see if that kick starts the battery again.

Let us know how it goes, I've noticed my stock battery lasts about the same amount of time as my extended because I've used my extended the whole time I've had this phone. Good luck: 4.3 is slick
how to reset battery stat in twrp?
[SOLVED] ok nvm.. solved already by app

A full wipe and flash to 4.3 has managed to clear it.... Next dilemma though I've been offered a 4 month early upgrade to an s4 ..... With the x phone disappointing (IMHO) I'm not sure what else is worth waiting for

Hello,
I have had Cyanogenmod 10.1.2 for awhile now and i have only had one issue. My battery life has gone down dramatically compared to the stock touchwiz rom. I usually take my phone to school on standby and airplane mode and i loose about 20% in 3 hours. If I use the stock rom I loose about 4-7% in 3 hours. I looked in the battery settings and it said Screen, Google Play Services, and Cell standby took up the most. I'm thinking it's the kernel but I do not want to take the chance of flashing a new one. If there is any other solution please let me know.

you might need to re calibrate your battery.
also, check if you have any wake locks using better battery stats.
Here's a recent thread where they are working on similar issues. Won't be exact to your situation but may help you to track it down on your own.

Also, in the stickies, I suggest you read Woody's battery thread for a better understanding of some common issues and power saving tricks.

If you are putting the phone in Airplane mode, make sure the Location Services are off.
using themes and live wallpaper also is bad for battery. really bad!
i installed CM10.2 on my old Samsung Captivate and gave to my mom to use. Turned everything off and I'm getting excellent battery life. She gets 4-5 hours of talk time and still has 70+% at the end of the day.
Hi guys -
So I saw in one of the 4.4 ROM threads that someone had used the Battery Calibration app from the Play Store and they claimed it seriously helped their battery life on the geespr. I decided to look at the app in the Store, and I started reading the reviews. I'm perplexed - - many people gave five star reviews claiming it significantly improved their battery life, while others said it did nothing, and a few even said it made their battery WORSE. Then there's the few who have said that wiping the battery stats file (the function that the app fulfills) can't possibly make a difference to your battery life because it only affects how Android reports the battery info. Still further, some say that the battery stats are ALREADY wiped when you flash a new ROM or even just unplug your charger.
So how about it, guys? Can we get a definitive answer about this? Surely our talented devs know the truth?

I've been confused by the same thing. I usually recommend doing it when switching between roms. While I can't give you a definite answer, I have also read that wiping the batterystats.bin file does nothing. This thread here says it does absolutely nothing and explains why. That being said, I am one of the people who have noticed significant increases in battery performance from it - which is why I recommend it. Apparently it shouldn't work though! So now the real question is, why the hell did my battery performance increase to such a high degree afterwards, if it does nothing? I didn't use the app, I just deleted the file once my phone hit 100%.
That thread I posted states it is clearly a placebo, and is even backed up by google. It won't hurt so I still do it because like I said Ive noticed an increase. Now Im completely unsure as to why that increase has taken place.
The app also says to let your phone drain to 0% and then recharge uninterrupted back to 100%. It says that it isn't necessary but helpful. Now this could help your battery IF it was a nickel based battery. Since ours in Lithium based, it can actually hurt performance and shorten your batteries life span.

Yeah, it appears as if it is simply a placebo. That thread is clear on what that file does and it shouldn't affect performance. Perhaps my increases happened because of changes in charging that just happened to coincide with wiping that file? What I do know is that I was regularly getting 15 hours or so with moderate use. Afterwards it doubled. The longest this battery has lasted for me was a little over 30 hours on a full charge.

It must just be a combination of factors then...which would explain why some people say it helps and some people say it hurts. Seems there's no real clear trend. Thanks for your replies

It works for me. I used to get like 11 hour with 3 hr screen time, and now I get 13
