Hey guys I'm kind of new to the rom world and let me say i LOVE IT. So much stuff you can do with the android. I'm on a i747 galaxy s3 and I've just downloaded the Pacman rom.I've downloaded other roms so i know i flashed this one correctly. I even re flashed it again last night. Both yesterday and tonight my battery went to 100%-%50 in one hour. After i charged it up it would decline 20 percent in one hour. I look at the time screen time on and to see if anything is waking up my phone excessively. And all sings say to no. Any tips? I feel like I'm back in pre ics days haha.

when you flash a new ROM it is recommended to wipe Cache, Dalvik, Factory Reset and System. If you've done that you should be okay with the installation portion.
Have you modified the kernel at all, have you over clocked anything?
Go to the play store and download BetterBatteryStats. This will help you determine the cause.

Yeah i have. When i installed i did the whole wipe thing. And I'm useing gsm batter monitor. All the readings are normal which is the weird part to me. And no i haven't over clocked (No need to imo) and haven't modified the kernel. I know that on previous androids you would have to do a wipe batter stats. I actually tried looking for that in CMW but i wasn't able to find it. Would you have to wipe the battery stats using "batter calibration" or wiping it manually in CMW? Or is that even necessary for galaxy s3s?

I would also recommend using Better Battery Stats as it is the best one I think. I always use the battery calibration app after I flash a new ROM. It usually takes a couple days or so anyways to have the new ROM settle in and everything. After a couple days you should see your battery life where it should be and not draining so fast depending on what your settings are.
Battery calibration is a myth and has been confirmed by Google themselves. Its all over the forum and wholly unnecessary. Those apps are useless. The only way to truly let your battery stats "calibrate" is to let the ROM and kernel settle into the phone after a few charge cycles.

Wow thats interesting. Everywhere i go people say that battery calibration is a necessary part when switching roms. Just out of curiosity what do you do for better battery life ? Basically what you use and not use settings wise.

Everyone's battery life varies. Honestly, it doesn't matter the ROM. The kernel does play a part in it but its how YOU use the phone, display brightness, sync, etc. Way too many factors.
As for me, I get about the same life on most ROM's I use after letting the phone settle for a few days. The only constant I have is the kernel I use which is in my signature. Lately, I've settled on one ROM as the dev is on top of his game with this device. That ROM is also in my sig.

I flashed bombaridier to my phone and apparently something is very wrong. Battery down to 75% on standby for 2 hours. This can't be right. i'm not blaming the ROM, I think its great! Just wondering if anyone has any experience with what my problem could be. Thanks!

My battery life was that bad no matter what I flashed. Then finally I stuck with a rom (stock) and slowly it started getting better. Took like a weekafter calibrating, but now I can do 20 hours with no changes (all stock 40% brightness autosync on). My advice: stick with a rom Amd wait it out. Battery should get batter everyday.

You must must do a factory reset. Bombadier doesn't work correctly without it.
I never had to calibrate the battery if I did the steps above.
Bombabidier gets me 20-30 hours of heavy use.
and Poster #2 is correct. You have to wait it out at least 3 days of use before you see any steady battery #s.

I'm having good battery results with Bombardier. I first tried Beastmod and it was bad for me. In standby it was draining 10% per hour doing nothing.
With Bombardier it barely goes down 1% in an hour or two in standby. 40 minutes on the phone went from 71 to 69%.

Hey thanks. After doing that I instantly have better results. Must have missed a step when I first flashed it. Whatever was wrong is gone now. Also my whole phone was getting really warm too. way warmer than usual but after redoing these steps, everything seems back to normal. Thanks again!
Now I'll wait it out and cross my fingers that it gets even better. Thanks everybody for such quick responses!

Hey.. Just following up. How is Your battery now? I switched to Juggernaut and I am getting about 5 hours with heavy usage... Using Slacker radio, 4g, surfing, using apps, watching with dice player and all...

It's that kernel Imo. It was eating my battery alive too, so I went back to the stock kernel.

Well a4 moda and shehrammajid said be patient and wait it out, so I did. They were right so thanks! And thanks to everyone else for their input and quick replies. With moderate usage my battery got to the point where it lasted almost 2 full days. thanks again everyone!
Recently purchased the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 and I flashed Beastmod v4.2 onto it. I'm experiencing a lot of battery drain, approximately 10% an hour with very minimal usage. I flashed the same ROM onto an identical SGS2 and the batterylife on that one is great. I've tried reflashing Beastmod but still getting the same issues. Anyone knows whats going on or how to resolve this?
How are you flashing it? Wipe everything and fix permissions?

I flashed it following the directions on the Beastmod thread in development.
1. Download it and place it at the root of your SD Card.
2. Boot into recovery.
3. Factory Reset then wipe cache.
4. Flash the ROM then wipe dalvik cache.
5. Reboot!
Beastmod is still 2.3.5, you should consider flashing one of the 2.3.6 ROMs and maybe updating your Radio to the latest , much better battery seems to come with the newer update ...

Why would there be such a large discrepancy in battery life though from one T-Mo SGS2 with Beastmod to the other? That's what is making me scratch my head.

Umm yeah that too ... duh ....
There is a BIG change in 2.3.6 in battery life, at least what I am seeing and others have reported, some say it is the ROM some say it is the radio , I am using both, I get better battery life, but overall the SGS2 Hercules is a battery hog ...

I have done a battery calibration on the phone.
Disable sync for your Exchange email. I found that to be the biggest source of drain.

I feel the same way my man..no matter which ROM I use, my battery drains like a mother
A lot of this can be due to signal strength. If you're in an area where you're constantly disconnecting/reconnecting to the towers, or you're just below the acceptable level for 4g, it might be switching between 3 and 4g, draining your battery.
Another thing to note, you usually want to run a rom for a couple of days before you start judging battery. It takes a while sometimes to build the dalvik-cache, and calibrate the battery. Sometimes as much as 3 full charges.
Lastly, look at what you have running on your phone. If you've tried tons of different roms, and they all drain, chances are it's an app you have that's misbehaving causing wake-lock. I'd try downloading system tuner from the market, and first going into the startup section. Remove ANYTHING that doesn't need to run in the background. You'd be amazed how many apps run at startup that really shouldn't, at least until you start them yourselves. Battery spy and cpu spy can be useful for troubleshooting what's draining your phone as well.
I drop 1% per 5 minutes or less....

Thanks for the tips. I didn't give it a chance to do 3 full charges yet and I'll take a look into removing startup apps.
From the OP, it sounds like you have more than one SG2 phone available to you. Try swapping batteries to see if the same rapid discharge occurs where transferred.

I did try this but the issue with the draining is still there.
Have you tried changing kernels? Each phone responds differently to kernels and like some more than others. I've tried everyone and Faux's "stock" kernel works the best on my phone. It's UV, on stock speeds with a screen off profile.
To make sure your phone is actually going into deep sleep check the app CPU spy on the market. it'll tell you what clocks your phone is running through and staying at for the most time.
Also, check out System Tuner to see what rogue apps could be running constantly in the background [se Bloatware Freezer to freeze or remove apps as necessary] as well as if your 2nd core is staying offline and not staying on when it's not needed.
I would also throw your phone into airplane mode and compare the drain with no data activation to how you normally keep it to check if the 3G/4G toggling is draining your battery.
This is a semi general android question... but i have a galaxy nexus... and that's what I'll be paying with...so....
I am currently testing out ROMs... mostly apex and its previous incarnations...
I was wondering if there is any downside to flash ROMs often? Like once or twice a week, as far as longevity of the device or its rank management or " snappiness"?

You will be fine. From what I understand it takes your battery a couple of days to "adjust" to your rom properly and display accurately

Hey I am on build 20 or AOKP so I have rebuilt mine at least twenty times but probably a lot more because I have tried ever rom available. I think of it like rebuilding my laptop, I don't think it does any harm at all but over time the device will deteriorate just like any other hardware device.
NAND flash is susceptible to write wear and will degrade over time. Frequent ROM flashing will increase the write rate to the NAND and over time the storage performance will decrease.
I have not measured the impact myself.
what sillow said is what is worrying me mostly...i will probably end up keeping one stable build and only reflashing once a month or something of the nature just to get updates....
I know that hardware performance will deteriorate over time like any other device...the only thing is that i'm in Canada...so...yeah, three year contracts...hehe
i'd like to have my phone survive at least 2+ years comfortably...hehe
minipaolo - do you mean the battery calibration app? i'm using cwm recovery and there is an option to wipe the battery stats from the recovery, which i think is just what the app does, if i'm not mistaken? (other than showing stats, of course...)

There has recently been a google+ post from one of the google developers who said that deleting you're battery stats has no influence whatsoever. Your battery will automatically calibrate itself, so no need to use a special app or delete the stats.
Anyway, good question in the OP. I can imagine it decreases the lifespan, but I can't imagine that it's decreased by a lot -or maybe just wishful thinking-

I've been flashing roms ever since I got my first Android phone all the way up to the Galaxy Nexus now. Never had a problem.
My phone has TERRIBLE battery life. In about one hour (on stanby with wifi or data on) my phone loses 10% battery without use.. Which is a 10 hour battery on stanby. I can BARELY make it through one day without my phone dying either. By the time i get home from school, my phone is down from 100% to 65-70% with VERY minimal usage. Then by 9:30pm my battery is down to 20% with moderate usage on wifi. I am running Beastmod 4.2 REMASTERED with whatever Kernal comes with it.. I have tried Juggernaut, Beastmod, Beastmod Remastered, Stock, unrooted, domination with no luck. Ive tried underclocking, over clocking, changing settings, brightness, different launchers and so forth. Still, i have no luck. Yes, i have calibrated my battery, and this is my second phone from T-Mobile (and 3rd battery) that has a short battery life. Can someone PLEASE help me with this. Thanks!
EDIT: Just typing this message i have lost 3% of my battery on wifi...

I really dont know what the general view on this is....but if you are flashing a lot you wont know the difference. You need to get through atleast a few full cycles to figure out if something has decent battery life. No ones phone is going to put out the same results. I have had a lot of bad results with ROMs people claim to be the best. Just try a rom + kernal combo, give it a week, see if things start improving, else flash something new the next weekend. Do proper wipes, restart your phone when its charged at 100% and go from there.
You leave GPS on? GPS is a drain even if you're not actively using it. Also try charging the phone to 100%, then drain the battery completely, then charge it back up to 100% with the phone off. I've found that usually greatly improves battery life.
Do a full wipe and flash macnut r1. I had similar problem as you until i flashed this rom, i think his kernel has the best batt life of them all and most stable for me. Worth a try

No i never leave GPS, Bluetooth or autosync on. And i have done the whole calibration on my battery, and it didnt help. And so i tried it 2 more times and it still didnt help. I dont know what to do

I dont usually flash ROMS that much....I have used each of these ROMS i listed for about a few weeks each and nothing helped

I leave it on lionheart governer with max 1,512 and min 192 and it works very well for me
Try this wipe your rom clean and dont install any apps just your emails and try it for a whole day maybe an app is eating your battery in the background.

It appears that the highest thing that is eating my battery is display, at 49%. Then comes Android System at 12% and then Dolphin browser at 6%

Click the graph.
There should be a "Screen on" section and an "Awake" section. The two should be pretty similar. If you see a lot of Awake time even though the screen isn't on, it means you have a wakelock.
Okay, is it possible my battery for my One V is already going bad only 5 months into owning it? Over the past 2-3 weeks my battery has NEVER reached a full 100% charge unless I reboot it, otherwise it get's stuck at a certain percentage until a reboot. Then about 2 days ago I started to notice severe battery drain with incorrect percentage reading, my phone would literally lose like 5% every 30 minutes. And it would drain to 0 really fast but when I reboot it owuld only be a like 50%, then it would drain real fast again, i'd reboot and it may be at 40%, and this is continuing to happen.
So is my battery just going bad?
If u are rooted,wipe battery stats in recovery..... It might help.... And also, if rooted, which rom are u using.....????+ check your overclock....
I have tried battery wiping, it hasn't helped, I am using Code Fire X and I am OC'ed but i run it on SavageZen so it's almost always underclocked.

first wipe your battery stats from recovery and wipe dalvik cache then install battery calibration and charge the battery up to 100% then let it go until it become show zero % remaining then charge your battery and check the performance
You must be joking. The issue is with misplacement of battery. Remove the battery somehow and wipe the contacts and replace it

Simon has said that he's still working on getting the battery kernel modules working correctly on the CFX ROM. I would probably try a different JB ROM to see if it's really your battery, or just the ROM.
It's a 4.2.2 update there is got be bugs....so u have to manage for a while
