I have seen multiple users here and on Rootzwiki state that they can't run AOSP ROMS. All the users can run a Sense ROM with no problem, but as soon as they load an AOSP ROM they get freezes.
Edit:
In recovery, be sure to do a full wipe of data, cache, and dalvik cache. It is also recommended that you format your system partition as well. Then install ROM.
If you choose to format the SD card, be sure to back up your important files first.
If you still experience problems running AOSP ROMs (CM7, Liquid, OMFGB, Pool Party) share your results.
i was tested different rom's and i've never had an issue flashing AOSP roms. I flashed a few ruu and sense rom.

I haven't had the issue myself, but I've seen a handful that have. No one has figured it out yet.
Edit: if you experienced this it may help to figure it out

Definitely not a myth. I had issues with aosp roms not mounting data or cache properly. However, newest cyanogen fixed it. Were trying to figure out where the problem stemmed from
I am having this issue. I was actually running CM7 nightly (with Tiamat) when the problem started. I plugged my phone into my stereo before I went to bed and listened to an album. When I woke up, the screen would not turn on. I rebooted and was stuck in boot loop. I tried to wipe the caches, but got stuck in boot loop. I then upgraded to the most current nightly (with a full wipe), but the phone suffered from the sluggish performance and screen issue.
I have flashed just about every ROM listed in the dev section. Prior to having the issue, I was running MIUI. Prior to that, I was running Newts Incredible 2 HD.
I do NOT have this issue with TSM Pool Party or the past week or so of CM7 nightlies.
I do have this issue with the AOSP Liquid Rom, OMGB, OMFGB.
All sense ROMS work.
I was running andrev_oc when this happened. No overclocking, but did have screen on and screen off profiles.
I have attempted to flash with CWM and 4ext recoveries. Even when converted to ext4, I still have the issue.
Sorry for all the info. I just tried to give as much detail as possible.
Hope this helps,
Matt
Thank you. If anyone else is having, or had this issue let us know what ROM you noticed the issue on, and what you were running prior.
Also, if anyone has a fix it can be posted here.
I have seen this as well. It happened to me when I flash 9.30 MIUI because I was bored. The next morning I restored my cm7 backup and it worked just fine until the screen went off and I would have to pull the battery to boot it back up. Did this several times until I remembered seeing this issue. After several wipes and restores the problem stayed. I finially just flashed a nightly #91 believe I was on 87 before and it has worked fine since. Not sure what was the problem or why it worked flashing a different nightly but I was glad it did.

Were you running a sense ROM before Miui?
I switched from newts Inc hd to liquid, and I had all kinds of problems with the SD card not mounting properly. I ran miui a long time ago with no problems.
Sent from my mobile typewriter.
Went from newts hd to liquid as well, tried restoring my cm7 backup and ran into lockups, reboots, and data lose. Any possibility liquid rom is behind this somehow indirectly? No shot at liquid, just maybe some corrupt files?

No, other AOSP ROMs were having same problem. It seems that data and cache don't mount properly after running certain ROMS.
It's starting to look like everyone that had problems with AOSP lockups had been running Inc2 HD prior. I'm not saying Newts ROM caused the issue, since I don't know the cause, but hopefully this can help someone to figure out the problem
Is there a fix? I am running liquid now with no problem. If the system doesn't mount properly when I try to switch, can I just wipe or format system and try to restore a backup or load another rom?

No, you should be fine.
Most people have no problems. This is for people experiencing random lockups and freezes, not just wit Liquid, but other AOSP ROMs also

I'm not saying that his ROM isn't running right, but it seems that people are having issues going from that ROM to an AOSP ROM.
Edit: There may be nothing wrong with his ROM, but maybe something is being left behind or not formatted after flashing the AOSP ROM.
Could Newts rom being formatted to Ext4 cause issues when flashing back to a Aosp rom? I've ran Newts Inc2HD and flashed back to Omfgb, but I've been using Ext4 for a while now for my system/data/cache file system (since switching to 4ext recovery). After flashing back, my Aosp rom ran fine. But my backup of Omfgb was already formatted to run on Ext4. Now if my backup was formatted to run on Ext3 for the data/cache, I would think this may cause issues if I don't reformat before flashing a new rom... Just a thought anyway.
Has anyone downgraded from CM7.2 to CM7.1? For some reason CM7.1 seems much more stable on my phone. Is downgrading as easy as upgrading?

You need to install a stock rom, flash clockworkmod, then flash cm7.1.
But you can make a backup, wipe data cache and dalvik and flash cm7.1, without stock rom flashed..
But why would you?
I think 7.2 is better..
Sent from my GT-S5660 using xda premium
Well, I tried 7.2 on my phone and it is not as stable as 7.1 for me. I am constantly having problems connecting to my home wifi network (have to enable/disable the wifi adapter a couple of times), phone restarts from time to time for no reason, unlock screen blinks one time before it t actually appears on screen and some other minor issues. Didn't have any of these issues with CM 7.1 so I think of going back to it. I'll probably go go for the wipe cache/dalvik solution in that case. Thanks for your reply.
Sent from my GT-S5660 using Tapatalk
Did you patch CM 7.2 with patch 4? The patch fixes most of the things and the rom is the most stable for me.
Yes, I did. Did I need to wipe something before or after applying it?
Sent from my GT-S5660 using Tapatalk
Update: I've just tried to wipe the cache partition plus the dalvik cache and it seems that most of the problems are gone now. I would recommend doing this to anyone with the same issues as mine.
Sent from my GT-S5660 using Tapatalk
You always have to wipe the cache/factory reset and dalvik cache before installing a new rom otherwise problems will obviously occur.
Glad that you solved the problem. If you still face some problems then wipe the cache/factory reset and the dalvik cache and flash the rom again with patch 4 and gapps.
I use stock rom, better than CM7.2/7.1. No lags in games, no screen flicker, no f****n problems. Same performance and better battery life.

Assuming you really want to downgrade to CM7.1 I think you can format /system, /data and such from CWM, then apply CM7.1 zip file. No need to install stock ROM first.
BTW I saw in CM-related instructions that when you have some problem with CM that you don't know how to fix try first doing wipe, usually that helps. It seems it helps in your case as well
Yeah, that's right
Dude, leave the f***in benchmarks, my phone is faster in games. With CM 7.2 last time my result in quadrant was 2600, but it was bulls**t cause i had lag in games.
Yup, I also find benchmarks are useful for bragging only. They almost never tell anything real about phone performance in a real application.
So you have to try different ROMs to find the one that would suit you.
Well, I guess it depends on what one uses his phone for I don't play any games and my phone is definitely faster with CM7.2. But as JustVass said everyone has to find the one that best suits him

OP says camera crashes when click to auto focus. can you confirm this? also, does gps and recording video work for you?
Before I try to flash this rom. I want to know what is differant from this and the stock rom that came with the SG3 other than not having TW? I know I need to back up first. Are all the main features stripped out or are they still there? How safe and stable is it to flash?
Just to make sure, is this ICS or Jelly bean?
answer a few questions...
camera works, yes autofocus does not fc/crash
video recording works/ 720p (20 sec record and playback without probs)
GPS works, very fast lock
ICS 4.0.4
this rom is sweet!

if your using the official CWM that just came out for the GS3, that CWM dosent have external sd card support, you have to use V4 of CMW (this one)
I've flashed other Android phones in the past so I'm not a complete noob but for some reason I cant go from AOKP to Paranoid. I've reflashed the a stock rom and did everything from scratch a few times now. Am i missing something? When in CW it just gives me an error when installing. The only rom that installs properly is the AOKP rom which happens to be the first Rom I've tried out since I had the Paranoidandroid rom on my Note. I've wiped cache, Devlick cache and factory wipe/restore. I honestly cant think of anything else after flashing back to stock and after trying the CM10 nightlys and MIUI roms i get the same errors. I've downloaded the roms straight from sites to my phone and from the computer. I've store to an internal sd card and the external sd card. Someone please tell me where I'm screwing up and why only AOKP works. I like the rom i just miss my Touchwiz!
WOW I'm retarded. Fixed
What kind of error are you getting in CWM? (i.e. what does the error message say?)
Edit: My timing... so you solved your own issue? What were you doing?
Id say using an old version of cwm

Yes it does go on Samsung screen.
And is the LED coming on at all?
This is a classic case of just not having a system to boot to. If I'm not mistaken the LED is not on and it most likely freezes at the galaxy s3 screen. Thishttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2017470 will fix it

The blue light and black screen usually means an incompatible kernel. Seen most with people using the toolkit to root jellybean.(flashes an insecure ICS kernel on jb rom)

If you don't format system, you installed CM10 over CM10.1. So too many system files was corrupted.
1. Wipe Data/Factory Reset
2. Format System
3. Flash CM
4. Flash gapps
5. Reboot
BTW, there is not need to format/erase/reset it several times.

There is a need because 1 wipe won't necessarily clean everything completely or correctly. I've seen settings stick through a single wipe dozens of times. Just the other day I saw this guy post about how he wiped an ICS rom before flashing a JB and some lockscreen settings stuck.
I mean if you're ok with booting up and having errors and eventually still having to wipe again, then yes, its not necessary.
