Recently I dropped my Note 2 and the screen shattered. Went totally black. I still am able to receive texts and calls etc. So i got a replacement phone and need to get some pictures off my broken Note 2's internal hard drive. Is there any way to do this by plugging the phone in? Really would like to figure this out before I have to ship my phone back to the insurance company.
Thanks,
Matt
Just plug it into your computer and it will appear mounted so you can navigate to the internal sd card and get the data you need. I think you don't need to install anything because it mounts as camera device or something like that.
You'll need to install the drivers for it to show up on your PC.
Get them from Samsung or here...

it mounts as MTP. but if you have a lock screen of any sort, you'll need to be able to unlock it before the internal drive and sdcard become visible on a windows pc.

Today I started to cleanup old folders from my SD card and I might have gotten a little carried away (since emptied trash on pc). Most of them were empty from old aps etc but since then I am unable to get my phone to connect to any pc. I'm not even sure those files or whatever would be on my sd card so I may not have deleted them to begin with. Yes, I have usb debugging enabled and all that stuff and I do get a notification but no options to choose anything with my ROM (SkyRaider 4.3). The phone charges, SD card is recognized by phone and can explore etc with root explorer, mounted, remounted, did a nandroid from a few weeks ago, different pc's and usb ports and still I do not get anything on the phone for an option to charge only mount as disk etc. I have tried everything I can think of. Is it possible I deleted some files that are necessary to do this or could it be something else?
Go into settings > pc connect and check ask me
I had this problem for a while. But it was hardware related (dropped it in the bathtub, yeah ...) but after I dropped it off the roof of my truck onto the asphalt, it started working again. But deleting stuff on the SD card shouldn't effect it at all. Just to make sure, can you mount it in recovery? Assuming your rooted that is.

Not caused by changes on phone
Nope it's something else. I've noticed the same issue with mine. I have over 300 photos on the SD card and wanted to move them over to my computer but it's not being recognized. It could be a Windows update to your computer that is causing it. I'm going to troubleshoot it when I get a moment. I've been playing around with my Streak 7 that I just got and haven't given it a thought.
Thanks all for the replies but I got it working. I didnt do anything special to get the option to mount as a disk drive I just kept trying different things. Strange thing is is that it wasnt working on 3 computers and then all of a sudden it just worked on all of them. I tried so many things so many times dont know what the deal was or is...
Connect to PC options in Settings
I took a look at mine this morning and I simply went into Settings, Connect to PC, and changed the Default connection type to Disk drive. I had to clean out my SD card; I had way too many pictures on it and hate scrolling through them.
You can also check the Ask me option too. I simply change the connection type and I have access to the drive.
Hello all,
Wanted to thank Wildstang for the 2.3.4 update, but I was messing around with my wife's phone that got a botched OTA update and accidentally used the CLEAR STORAGE function on HBOOT in order to clear the cache. Instead, I've cleared all of her data, which wouldn't be horrible accept that many of her pictures were still on the phone. Those she hasn't posted to Facebook may be gone forever.
Is there any way to recover this lost data? Otherwise I am probably headed to divorce town.
Right now the phone is sitting on my desk, I haven't touched anything accept connect it to the USB. The USB drives show up since I have the UnRevoked USB driver, but when I click on them they say "Please insert disk into drive x:". I was hoping not to uverwrite any deleted data in case it can be recovered, but considering it's flash memorey, I am probably more than hosed. Is that correct?
U can try running a recovery program like this http://www.piriform.com/recuva after you boot the phone and mount it to you PC. The app is pretty simple to use, just select the drive you want to try and recovery the info from. I hope it helps cuz I know "If the wife ain't happy, u ain't happy!"
Thanks, I'm trying that right now. I had another utility that asked me what file system is used. Does Android use FAT32? I know it doesn't use NTFS
I know that's what the SD card should be formatted to, I assuming the internal memory is the same.
Windows is saying the drives are empty. On the HTC, I get the picture of the phone with a red hazard symbol, like it's not being recognized...
Edit: I finally got the computer to recognize the "Android Boot Loader Interface" from HBOOT, but can I access the internal storage from here, or would I have to actually let the OS load up?
Did you have the phone fully boot or no? I know when I used the Clear storage function before I had to reboot the phone before my PC would recognize the drive...
I've now restarted the phone, but I get the same disk error as in the OP: "Please insert a disk into Removable Drive x:". There are two drives.
Edit: Looks like I get the same thing when I booted into RECOVERY from the HBOOT screen or when I initially load the phone (haven't done ANY set up to lessen chances of corruption of recoverable files). It's like they're registering as Removable Drives without any media inserted...
I'm assuming that you are mounting the phone after you plug it into your PC right? If you pull down the status bar you'll see the usb symbol, select it and make sure you select the mounting option...
Yeah, it looks set to Charge Only, and the only way I can change that is be starting to configure the phone. Just hoping I do a minimal amount of damage to any files I might be able to recover.

You get that message if you don't mount the drives. In recovery you have to navigate into advanced options and mount the sd card and emmc so that your PC will recognize the drives.
OK, so all is not lost
Apparently, when one uses the CLEAR STORAGE option, it clears user data, but retains the rest of the file structure... including my wife's beloved pictures
With VZ Backup Assistant and her Google account, I can recover all of her contacts. So I've lost SMS messages history and apps... and I'm OK with these. I think she'll be OK too now that she knows her pics are safe.
I've learned a few things today, and will manually move her pics to the SD Card after this, in case the tech support guy (me) makes any more bonehead mistakes trying to fix a half-baked VZ OTA update. If I can convince her to root her phone, Titanium Backup can take care of everything else in the future.
Regardless, thanks for the help jackbtha1
I'd like to start by saying I checked but couldn't find any similar threads to this issue I've been facing with my S3. I believe it to be a global issue since samsung did away with needing drivers to mount internal and external storage on their phones to just having the device showing up as a media device to simplify the user experience.
My question is that short of encrypting the phone and SD card (for those of us who don't have any incriminating or secret information on our phones but want at least a screen-lock's level of security), is there a way to prevent your phone from automatically attaching to any computer it's plugged into via internal storage and SD? Otherwise, I don't see a point in using a screen lock. Anyone can steal this phone, plug it into a computer, and have full access to all of your files.
Again please redirect this post if a thread currently exists. Such a security hole makes me nervous, granted I am rooted and use avast's defense module to safeguard a lost phone predicament. Thank you everyone!
With PIN lock, I can't access the contents of the int/ex SD card until I unlock the phone once.
Check your phone settings again. When my phone is locked (pin/face/etc), if I were to plug it into a PC, it detects the device but does NOT allow access to internal memory or SD card.
Yeah, when I connect via usb to my computer i have to drag the notification bar down and click on mount usb. When the screen is licked obviously you can't do that until you unlock it.

Hello All, i recently was given a att s3. i tried connecting it to my computer but all it does is charge. previous experience tells my android phones are picky about the usb cable. i dont have the original and but tried several others and all it does is charge. didnt have an sd card in it. now it does but the phone only mounts it if i push it in past the click and hold it. let go, says removed. i would like to be able to connect it and flash stock rom via odin and root and flash all the good things but since it wont recognize on the pc, cant. im using a mac that had parallel desktop and windows 7 but uninstalled that to try dual boot with boot camp. ive tried suggestions in other forums and post but nothing has worked. does anyone know why or what i can do to get it to stay mounted and not holding it?

Sounds like something is wrong with SD card slot. Does it lock into place when you put it in?
yeah it clicks and locks into place. sometimes it only mounts when you push it a little past the click and hold it. but as soon as you let go, it says removed.

Yeah. Sounds like the slot is bad. Maybe try cleaning the contacts or somehow try to rig it to make it stay pushed in a little farther.
i tried putting a thin piece of paper under the edge to lift the edge and tilt the contacts downward slightly. no dice, but only tried once. at times i can push it past the click and it mounts then other times it still doesn't. push down on the socket itself and hear a click but no mounting. is the socket serviceable or possibly a reflow? thanks for your replies. ive had an s3 before and i loved/missed it.
i guess it is. i just order a replacement sim card/ sd card slot assembly. do you think that if the assembly on it is not allowing the sd card to connect and mount would cause the usb cable to not connect? i kinda wanted to flash the stock rom on so i know its how it should be and then root and customize to my wish.

Do you have the samsung drivers for the phone installed on your computer. It should still see your internal storage if even if the ad card is not working. You can google search for the drivers
yeah i had the drivers installed. once with galaxy s3 toolkit then downloaded from samsung. i was running parallel desktop on my macbook air to run windows 7. my wifes iphone will bring up an option to connect with mac or windows 7 but everything else i plug in just connects straight to the mac side. i uninstalled windows 7 and parallel and try boot camp.
finally got windows up and running with boot camp. updated and installed samsung drivers twice. connect the phone, computer says usb devce not recognized.
so, I had my phone freeze up this morning, and decided I would reboot to recovery and flash something else. When I took off the back cover, I noticed the sd card didn't look like it was fully inserted, so I took it out, and tried to click it back in; it wont click in.
so, I decided to back up the sd card to my pc, and then I would just transfer the twrp backup folder to my internal card from the external card, and get to my backups that way.
well, I have been trying to get the phone to show up on my windows 8.1 computer, so I can transfer files to the internal card, but I cant get it to show up in windows; I have gone through the mount menu in twrp, and the settings in twrp, but I cant get the damn phone to show up in my file explorer window...
obviously the phone wont boot, so I cant transfer stuff wirelessly, and I am at a loss here..
-any suggestions on how to get the external sd card to click in?
-any suggestions on how to get to the internal storage on the phone via windows explorer?
thanks all..
EDIT: Well, I got the phone to reboot, and restored a nand, but the External card still wont click in..I'll take it to ATT, and hope they don't say warranty is void since its rooted..Unless anyone knows how to get the damn external sd to stay clicked in!!
Are you sure the click part is unlocked? It may already be in the locked position.
