[Q] Incredibly stupid mistake, HELP :( - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
Wanted to thank Wildstang for the 2.3.4 update, but I was messing around with my wife's phone that got a botched OTA update and accidentally used the CLEAR STORAGE function on HBOOT in order to clear the cache. Instead, I've cleared all of her data, which wouldn't be horrible accept that many of her pictures were still on the phone. Those she hasn't posted to Facebook may be gone forever.
Is there any way to recover this lost data? Otherwise I am probably headed to divorce town.

Right now the phone is sitting on my desk, I haven't touched anything accept connect it to the USB. The USB drives show up since I have the UnRevoked USB driver, but when I click on them they say "Please insert disk into drive x:". I was hoping not to uverwrite any deleted data in case it can be recovered, but considering it's flash memorey, I am probably more than hosed. Is that correct?

U can try running a recovery program like this http://www.piriform.com/recuva after you boot the phone and mount it to you PC. The app is pretty simple to use, just select the drive you want to try and recovery the info from. I hope it helps cuz I know "If the wife ain't happy, u ain't happy!"

Thanks, I'm trying that right now. I had another utility that asked me what file system is used. Does Android use FAT32? I know it doesn't use NTFS

I know that's what the SD card should be formatted to, I assuming the internal memory is the same.

Windows is saying the drives are empty. On the HTC, I get the picture of the phone with a red hazard symbol, like it's not being recognized...
Edit: I finally got the computer to recognize the "Android Boot Loader Interface" from HBOOT, but can I access the internal storage from here, or would I have to actually let the OS load up?

Did you have the phone fully boot or no? I know when I used the Clear storage function before I had to reboot the phone before my PC would recognize the drive...

I've now restarted the phone, but I get the same disk error as in the OP: "Please insert a disk into Removable Drive x:". There are two drives.
Edit: Looks like I get the same thing when I booted into RECOVERY from the HBOOT screen or when I initially load the phone (haven't done ANY set up to lessen chances of corruption of recoverable files). It's like they're registering as Removable Drives without any media inserted...

I'm assuming that you are mounting the phone after you plug it into your PC right? If you pull down the status bar you'll see the usb symbol, select it and make sure you select the mounting option...

Yeah, it looks set to Charge Only, and the only way I can change that is be starting to configure the phone. Just hoping I do a minimal amount of damage to any files I might be able to recover.

You get that message if you don't mount the drives. In recovery you have to navigate into advanced options and mount the sd card and emmc so that your PC will recognize the drives.

OK, so all is not lost
Apparently, when one uses the CLEAR STORAGE option, it clears user data, but retains the rest of the file structure... including my wife's beloved pictures
With VZ Backup Assistant and her Google account, I can recover all of her contacts. So I've lost SMS messages history and apps... and I'm OK with these. I think she'll be OK too now that she knows her pics are safe.
I've learned a few things today, and will manually move her pics to the SD Card after this, in case the tech support guy (me) makes any more bonehead mistakes trying to fix a half-baked VZ OTA update. If I can convince her to root her phone, Titanium Backup can take care of everything else in the future.
Regardless, thanks for the help jackbtha1

[Q] computer not recognizing evo as a disk drive

Hey everyone first time poster here. I have been researching the question I have in the forums and have not found an answer to my question yet so I figured I would just ask it. I just recently bought my htc evo and tried transferring a SNES rom over to my evo from my PC. At first my computer would not recognize that I was trying to have my evo seen as a disk drive (yes I did have it set to disk drive and not to charge only or another option). eventually it worked (I dont even know what I did, if I did anything at all). After I put this ROM onto my phone my sd card is mounted as read only (cant get it back to write), and no matter what I do I cant get my computer to read my phone as a disk drive. I tried changing the disk drive to another letter which didnt work, under device manager my computer recognizes I have an android phone plugged into my computer, but it still will not show anything in the "my computer" folder, it sees I have a device in, but I click on it and it says "please insert a disk into removable disk F". If anyone can help with this I would greatly appreciate it and thank you for taking the time to read all of this.
Well the first thing to make sure of is that after plugging in the device you go to the notification bar and press on the USB Mass Storage notification, then select "Turn on USB storage". If you've done that simple step and it still doesn't see the SD card, then very simply try a different USB port on your computer.
Even if your card is in read only mode, you should still be able to read it
I don't know why it would be in read only unless you forgot to mount it with read/write after an advanced command.
interesting, I have never seen the option of "turn on mass USB storage" when I've gone to the notification bar? In my notification bar I have a picture of the sd card with a question mark over it. When I drop down the notification bar the notification pertaining to the sd card says "mounted readonly" and the explaination says "The SD card has an unexpected problem. Tapping...." I have no idea what it says after that as it wont allow me to view the rest of the explanation.
As for the problem that this is causing is that it seems I cannot save anything to the sd card. The camera stops working to where I cant take pictures, or download music, and I'm assuming that its because these functions need somewhere to save the files and since the card is on read only nothing will be allowed to save on it?

theres probably an error on the sd card, may need to reformat if its from a different phone too. Try to reformat, probably the only thing possible right now. But before you do that, go to your settings and enable usb debugging and see if that works first to allow your sd card to mount to the pc. Then it should be read as a drive. if not, your gonna have to reformat. so try this, if not, I can try to trouble shoot you more......
thanks for your reply. And yes I shouldve said before that I tried the USB debugging feature as well and that didn't do the job either. I saw reformatting as a suggestion in another thread but didnt see information on how to do it and that is out of my realm of knowledge. If you could explain to me how to do it I would greatly appreciate it.

yea, no problem man, just go to settings>sdcard/sd>unmount the volume>reformat!
let me know if that works for you if not, something else is wrong.
well I go into settings> SD phone & storage> Unmount SD card, is something supposed to happen or am I supposed to do something else? After I tap that nothing happens and the "format SD card" option isnt highlighted meaning its not even an option to choose.
Hmmm. Unmount then remount then umonint again turn the phone off and on see if the uloption highligjts

oh wow that worked man!! Thank you so much for your help, you just saved me a bunch of frustration, now it shows up as a disk drive on my computer and the sd card is read/write compatible. Can't thank you enough man, do you happen to know of a reason as to why this would happen? I mustve set it to be like that somehow I just can't imagine how I did that. Also is there an app or way to back up all your files and apps on your phone and sd card and transfer them to your computer just in case something like this happens again at least I'll have backups so I wont loose everything.
Glad i could hel you. Ita no problem that you cant thank me enough, just as long as we solvee tue prob. You Could have dropped your phone and it knocked the SD card around or it just didn't read it correctly on boot. As far as I know, I don't know of any apps to backup SD card contents and phone data. I would just make a nandroid backup and store on PC. So if you make any vital errors, u can restore using your recovery agent.

Connect to pc cant see sd disk

Today I started to cleanup old folders from my SD card and I might have gotten a little carried away (since emptied trash on pc). Most of them were empty from old aps etc but since then I am unable to get my phone to connect to any pc. I'm not even sure those files or whatever would be on my sd card so I may not have deleted them to begin with. Yes, I have usb debugging enabled and all that stuff and I do get a notification but no options to choose anything with my ROM (SkyRaider 4.3). The phone charges, SD card is recognized by phone and can explore etc with root explorer, mounted, remounted, did a nandroid from a few weeks ago, different pc's and usb ports and still I do not get anything on the phone for an option to charge only mount as disk etc. I have tried everything I can think of. Is it possible I deleted some files that are necessary to do this or could it be something else?
Go into settings > pc connect and check ask me
I had this problem for a while. But it was hardware related (dropped it in the bathtub, yeah ...) but after I dropped it off the roof of my truck onto the asphalt, it started working again. But deleting stuff on the SD card shouldn't effect it at all. Just to make sure, can you mount it in recovery? Assuming your rooted that is.

Not caused by changes on phone
Nope it's something else. I've noticed the same issue with mine. I have over 300 photos on the SD card and wanted to move them over to my computer but it's not being recognized. It could be a Windows update to your computer that is causing it. I'm going to troubleshoot it when I get a moment. I've been playing around with my Streak 7 that I just got and haven't given it a thought.
Thanks all for the replies but I got it working. I didnt do anything special to get the option to mount as a disk drive I just kept trying different things. Strange thing is is that it wasnt working on 3 computers and then all of a sudden it just worked on all of them. I tried so many things so many times dont know what the deal was or is...
Connect to PC options in Settings
I took a look at mine this morning and I simply went into Settings, Connect to PC, and changed the Default connection type to Disk drive. I had to clean out my SD card; I had way too many pictures on it and hate scrolling through them.
You can also check the Ask me option too. I simply change the connection type and I have access to the drive.

Broke Screen Need Data Off Phone

Recently I dropped my Note 2 and the screen shattered. Went totally black. I still am able to receive texts and calls etc. So i got a replacement phone and need to get some pictures off my broken Note 2's internal hard drive. Is there any way to do this by plugging the phone in? Really would like to figure this out before I have to ship my phone back to the insurance company.
Thanks,
Matt
Just plug it into your computer and it will appear mounted so you can navigate to the internal sd card and get the data you need. I think you don't need to install anything because it mounts as camera device or something like that.
You'll need to install the drivers for it to show up on your PC.
Get them from Samsung or here...

it mounts as MTP. but if you have a lock screen of any sort, you'll need to be able to unlock it before the internal drive and sdcard become visible on a windows pc.

[Q] Phone started acting up after app install, need help

Okay, so. I have an HTC One M8, rooted, S-On, TWRP, whatever else. It was running just fine until yesterday or so, when I wanted to switch out an icon pack, but wanted to keep my stock launcher, so I found Unicon on the App Store, and downloaded it (along with the Minimal Hero/Hera Icon Pack, or whatever it was called). As soon as I installed it, I started having problems with my phone restarting randomly, and I disabled the Icon Pack in Unicon, and got rid of Unicon (disabling it in Xposed Installer and then uninstalling the app).
That didn't solve my problems, though. I managed to somehow keep the phone on after numerous restarts, but every time my phone was turned off, it went into the same constant restart cycle (where it restarts about a minute after it's booted up). I tried searching for ways to remedy the problem, ending up in the TWRP recovery, where I tried wiping the cache and the Dalvik cache, which didn't help. I also uninstalled Xposed Framework and before that, tried disabling all the Xposed modules, nothing helped.
As things stand now, I did a wipe on all the categories in TWRP (including cache, Dalvik cache, internal storage, system and data) and when I rebooted from recovery, my phone was stuck with the HTC boot logo. Now I'm just letting it sit on my bed, showing the boot logo, waiting for it to drain.
Any help would be appreciated.
EDIT: I did a factory reset (perhaps stupidly) and now, when I reboot it, it says "No OS is installed!". Since it's not showing up on my computer while in recovery, how should I proceed to flash the stock ROM?
when you wiped the system partition, you wiped the ROM.
You should put a stock ROM on your phone and flash it.
Follow one of the returning to stock guides.

Excuse my stupidity, but could you point me towards one of those? I was looking for that, but didn't really find anything helpful.
Also, I know how to flash a ROM in its simplest form, but my phone's not booting and I don't know how to get a ROM file onto the phone itself, because it doesn't show up in the computer when in recovery. How do I flash ROMs from the computer or whatever?

I'm sure the search tools on this forum work just as well for you as they do me. Or you could probably start at a sticky thread.
You could also search for "adb sideload" and "adb push".

I did, and they told me USB debugging must be turned On, which I can't do, since I can't boot the phone.

I might have missed this but did you do a recovery? Within TWRP you have the option of storing it on internal storage, or the sd card. If you did the sd card way, there might be hope. Just hold down power and volume up and when the screen goes dark, hold power down to get into recovery, then restore the backup. If it was on internal storage, its probably gone, and if you didnt make one, well..wouldnt an RUU fix that?
Also you did more then a plain factory reset...that would still keep the os etc installed..you wiped that sucker completely clean

I suggest you make use of the external SD card and a USB card reader.

Yeah, I know. I was idiotic. I'm just kind of a newb to the whole scene, and I panicked when my phone started acting up. It was stupid to wipe system too.
And yeah, I have an SD card and my computer has a reader for it. I can access my SD card, but how do I install something on my SD card from recovery? As far as I can see, it only lets me install form internal storage.

Take the SD card out and put it onto your computer, download a ROM and place it on SD Card. Insert card back into phone, boot into recovery and change location path to external SD card. There is an option for that.
Location where ROM is... of course.

There is, actually, no option for that. I got the ROM adb pushed to my phone and got it flashed, though, so it's all good now (despite the fact that I idiotically made myself lose all my internal storage data).
Anyway, thanks for the help!

within twrp...where it says internal storage after you tap backup,.. tap those words Internal Storage, it will bring up 3 options..Internal Storage..MicroSD..or OTG I believe..I know mine does..I had 2.7.1.0 and which ever was below it allow that option. Well just for future reference.. And btw...dont cut yourself down..We all make mistakes...thats why we come here..to learn and maybe help someone else

I know. I swear, I tried, didn't seem to work. Maybe something else's amiss elsewhere. In any case, I got it adb pushed to the internal storage, so it's all alright, phone's fine now. I'll look into the microSD thing, but I'm still glad I learned a bit more about Android in the process of recovering my device (because it's a path where most is yet untrodden for me).
And yeah, being on xda as such a newbie is sort of daunting, especially as I'm pretty impatient with people who don't understand as well something that I do, but I always hope for at least one paragon who helps, and helps with patience and friendliness (which I did get, so thank god).

Phone Bricked ?

Hi everyone !
Yesterday, I tried to install a new ROM (RR Android 7.1, the latest version).
I flashed the ROM with Gapps and rebooted the phone: I know the first boot is usually a bit long (15-20min according to my previous experience) but after 1h and no evolution, I decided to let the phone boot overnight.
This morning, it was still booting and when I plugged it to my PC and tried to transfer another ROM (to try again), it was no longer recognized ("the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected")...
I also tried to plug the micro-SD card directly to my PC, it's not even recognized (nothing appears in the Computer window after being plugged, just the connect sound).
Drivers have been checked already.
So, basically, I have a OS-less phone that cannot receive any file from USB (mounted or not, MTP activated or not)
I still have access to Bootloader menu and Recovery.
Does anyone have an idea I haven't tried yet ? :fingers-crossed:
It's not bricked by any stretch.
First of all, you should have made a TWRP backup before trying to flash a ROM. You should always do this before a new ROM, root, or other mods; just a simple and golden "phone modding" rule to live by; so I don't know why so many folks neglect this step. If you had a TWRP backup, you could simply restore, have a working phone OS, and go from there.
When trying to read the MicroSD card, does you computer have a card reader built-in, or are you using a USB card reader? If the latter, try another, if you have one. They can be finicky, especially the cheap ones. You can even use an old working phone as an impromptu "card reader" in a pinch (I've done it a few times).
When connecting the phone to your PC, are you booted to TWRP when trying to copy/paste a new ROM? Can you connect by adb when in TWRP (you typically should be able to). If so, you can try to adb push a ROM, or alternately adb sideload a ROM.
Also, just FYI, if the phone is stuck for more than 10 or 15 minutes with no response after a ROM flash, you can conclude something is wrong, and go back into recovery, re-flash, try another gapps package (frequent cause of stuck boots after flashing an AOSP ROM in my experience), etc.
Thanks for the reply ! That'll teach me a lesson...
The SD card reader is built-in to my PC.
I'm always booted to TWRP when connecting my phone, just tried the ADB Sideload command but nothing happens (except FAIL). Is there something I'm missing ?
Try to reinstall HTC drivers, and whatever adb/fastboot tools you are using. Try another USB port, and another cable.
Don't see anything that should prevent adb or just seeing internal storage from working. Usually just a case of drivers, etc.
Another thing you can try, assuming you are using Windows, go into Device Manager, find the device, and pick the option to manually select drivers. Then pick the generic Android MTP drivers. I sometimes have to do this to get my home PC to "see" the M8 on adb or to browse internal storage.

By the way, when not mounted. The phone DOES appear in "Computer" window but can't trasnfer anything in "Internal Storage" and my SD card shows up as a ~16Mb storage capacity while it's a 64Gb model...

Internal storage not showing anything, may indicate the storage is corrupted. Try going into TWRP, select Wipe, and tap the "Format data" button; and see if that helps. Obviously, any data will be lost during the format, but I think we're past that point anyway.
Although this wouldn't explain why you can't see anything on the SD card. Internal storage corruption happens fairly occasionally. But I've never seen it coincide with SD corruption/issues. So that part has me puzzled.
