Sense keyboard or other keyboard with arrow keys? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

Is there a port of the Sense keyboard or is there another keyboard with arrow keys that aren't buried behind 3 layers of alt key switches? A lot of people think the arrow keys are a huge waste of screen but I frequently edit long posts, and it's maddening trying to position the cursor somewhere exactly before or after some specific letter by jabbing your finger and hoping it does't misinterpret what you wanted as highlighting, zooming, cut or paste or delete, etc...

Yeah, SwiftKey has a toggle for arrow keys in its settings. They take up a little extra real estate, but I like them

I've honestly never seen arrow keys in Android... lol
Except for when I had the epic 4g and that was a physical keyboard.
I guess you learn new things everyday

I think legacy features still come in handy now and then. If you don't have the finger precision of a child-laborer, text editing can be a hassle without those arrow keys

Yeah true..
Well at least the s pen adds a bit more precision.
But I rarely find myself actually using it
So are the arrow keys specific to htc legacy devices?
Maybe that's why I've never seen them... I've never owned anything htc
I've played with some htc devices...but when I did they didn't have sense for very long for me to see them

No, HTC just happened to include the arrows as a feature of the Sense keyboard. SwiftKey includes it as a theme option.

Thumb keyboard 4 has arrow keys that are resizeable. Hell the whole keyboard is customizable from the size to layout and theme, I just wish it had an option for the 5th row of numbers
I like to break stuff!

touchpal keyboard has an option to show them too

a.i. keyboard has both the number row and arrows

I use Kii and it had asked add the for bottom keys as well add the top number row. It also allows you to customize the background.

ROM Idea/Proposal/Thing

Alright so im no developer, so this is why im offering this idea up.
Personally, im starting to hate Android...Im having some serious webOS envy. I know I know, just switch, or blah blah blah. I love the whole gesture based UI. So I was wondering..on the Inc the capacitive touch layer of the screen extends down to right around the bottom of the home-menu-back-search keys. (You can see by downloading some multi-touch tester and dragging your finger down there, it will read that your Y-Position is something like 820 or something.) So right above the trackpad in the middle of the soft keys is a blank spot. Would it be possible for you to change that so there is some sort of invisible soft button, that when you swipe up or tap it launches a user specific app? I would probably put some sort of app-switcher there, or well I dont actually know. But if this is possible, it would be really freaking awesome imho. Thoughts?
have you tried using adw or launcherpro...they have gesture ui, and you can change them also...ie, cm6. sense doesn't that I know of.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Cm6 has lockscreen gestures. Haven't looked into them myself but may be a place to look...
I know those launchers have gestures but what I mean is a new soft key in the middle if the menu and back key

I remember on stock 2.1 this invisible button did something in certain apps, I can't remember what it was though.
i see what youre saying and i think itd be pretty sweet. just to have another soft button to launch messaging or something. i'd love this in a rom

Why not remap the trackpad?
I understand maybe a invisible button could be cool, but its useless. So is the track pad, but the trackpad can be remapped
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Well what if u made it to where swypeing left or right or down or up on the optical joystick opened apps of your choice while on the homescreen... or is that what were already talking about?
Well the track pad is not use less. I use it on a normal basis. Maybe for you having an invisible button would be use less but for me it would not. To each their own.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
No that's not what I was thinking of, rather the area above the track pad. That's a good half inch Of wasted space.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Oh I see, yea that is a good idea, yea I'd like to see that
The question is, what applications would you match to that area?

A different keyboard?

I just purchased my SII and while I love everything about it I'm not liking the keyboard to much. I've come from the Moment with slide keyboard so it was no problem when replying to messages and being able to read what I was replying to. With the SII when I replay in landscape the keyboard fills most the screen and the text box takes care of the rest. I would have thought you could slide the text box down to read the message but it's not doing that. Any suggestions or different keyboards to try that would allow me to see the message I'm replying to while typing?

You can try BetterKeyboard from off the Amazon Market. It was initially up on the normal android market. It costs like three bucks but its well worth it. Its very very feature rich and its the only one that, off the top of my head, has the ability to not show a text box in landscape and just show a keyboard for input. It warns against only working on large screens like tablets, but I've rarely ever had it cause issues for me on this phone.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I would like to see the text box but also have the ability to slide the box down to quickly read the message then finish typing my reply. Maybe it's a different sms app I need? I'm also not a big fan of the little comic book chat boxes. I'd like to see the message fill the entire screen left to right when in landscape.

Oh I'm sorry man, I thought were asking for something entirely different. H'm... hold on moment.
**Edit**
I'm still not entirely sure if this is what you're looking for for.. but as for messages not coming up full screen so to speak and being stuck inside little bubbles, you can use Handcent SMS (my preference) though GOSMS or ChompSMS might do the same thing. I can completely customize my interface so that it looks however I want it. Down to the font and font color of each individual thread, the bubble style of each individual thread, the background image for each thread, etc etc etc. Its neat. Two screenies for you. One with bubbles in landscape. One without.

I use thumb keyboard
I have started using Perfect Keyboard as I love how it does the macro text replacement kind of like the blackberry's and windows mobile keyboards used to. I can just type br and it will expand it to whatever I want (currently my email address) . I also like the split screen in landscape mode that give you a number pad between the split.
The developer is a member here at XDA.
I do like swyping, does anyone know if the newer versions have customized text replacement or macros? The version of swype that came pre-installed doesn't.

Keyboard Influenced by SwiftKey Team?

Not really sure why people think that the SwiftKey devs did any meaningful work with the Note II keyboard. In my opinion, it is garbage in comparison and offers no basic functionality beyond SwiftKey 3. It's a real shame you lose S pen support using an alternative keyboard. Do you really prefer the default keyboard? There is no way I can write anywhere as fast as I can text with basic SwiftKey 3. Thoughts?

The one thing I love about the stock keyboard is the 4th row number keys. Wish I could get that on swift key.

+1... exactly what I think...
Yes, the number row counts for something, no doubt, but when I'm wailing away at the keyboard, it is normally to hit letter keys, and not numbers, as good as it is. Simiarly, there are obvious benefits to a hardware querty keyboard, but will few will buy one despite the utility. Now, I say this as someone who doesn't spend a great deal of time working in spreadsheets. Something like that is something I could imagine skipping plain SwiftKey for. What do you use a number row for?

I dont think you get it. Moving the special characters onto an additional row of keys, so I dont have to toggle to another keyboard +being able to hit the numbers on the same screen +swype on the same keyboard... all adds up. Now, if I could change two things; spacebar to autocorrect and being able to edit the keyboards user dictionary, that would be perfection.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
Yes, that's what I'm talking about, the space bar and the auto complete/correct. To me, that IS SwiftKey. If I have to reach up for every word, that is not swift and I could definitely do without it. Considering what you said, if the only influence that SwiftKey had in the Samsung keyboard is the "learning" phase, how is it learning anything if you have to select your words manually and can't change the dictionary?
Before I had the Note 2 I used swift key on all my phones. However with the Note I've been using Swype for the 1st time and love it. So much so I've removed swift key. Swype is nice when you're one handing this beast and is the only reason I even tried using it in the 1st place. I've also found it to be really intuitive. Once swift key have their version of Swype up and running I'll give it another shot.

So I have started trying to learn the Swype keyboard. So far it feels like more of a gimmick than a see serious attempt to make a dent in the keyboard market, but I am open to accepting my inexperience as a important factor.Do you guys find you are actually faster with this keyboard? I do plan on continuing to practice day to day, and I accept that I may have spoken to soon.

I still prefer to type with both hands, then again, I find the stock samsung keyboard good enough that it's my daily driver (although i wish the auto correct kicks in automatically... I don't have time to type and then click on the auto correct, just auto correct when i move to the next word).
I only use the swipe keyboard when i'm using 1 handed or the s pen as regular typing should be done with 2 hands. I did come from a sensation so, i was used to their trace keyboard

I had the same problem not liking the lack of space bar for autocorrect until I realized it was the same distance to hit the autocorrected word vs the spacebar. Once I broke that habit swiftkey and swype were forgotten about. Typing on mispelled words to autocorrect em has been nice on the stock sammy keyboard.

Once I became comfortable with Swype I found that I'm much faster and proficient with it than finger pecking. It took me about a day to really start liking it. Prior to the Note 2 I never used Swype, I also viewed it as a gimmick. Now I absolutely love it!
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
The new swiftkey function with the spacebar seems nice, just wish they would separate the number keys at the top like on the stock keyboard. Once the new swiftkey comes out I will probably give it a try again.
I've noticed that there are places where the Swype keyboard isn't inserting spaces after words, such as in the dolphin browser. Is this a glitch or just me?

Homemade swype keyboard

Hypothetically speaking, if one found a keyboard they liked but the only thing missing was swype, could a developer rebuild the app to include it? I'm really liking A.I.type keyboard but no swype capability is a bummer. Just curious.

Anything is possible, though I would think that's too much work to reverse engineer something that's already available on the play store and fits 99% of people's needs.
As it turns out, while using the keyboard the app prompted me to leave feedback and of course I told them it was awesome but would love to see swype integrated and they actually emailed me last night and told me they were currently working on putting it in.

I really like the stock keyboard but I like the layout options they have on theirs. I can put up the "period" key, "comma" key, smiley face, mic key, and numbers keys all at the same time without needing any of them to be long press keys. You can also adjust the keyboard height from the keyboard itself without going into settings. It seems to be a lot more convenient to use the keyboard this way.

Space bar on Swype keyboard

I love the Swype keyboard dint get me wrong but have found that it's space bar is way to small and half the the time I end accidentally hitting the comma or period symbol. I might also email Nuance regarding this issue and see what they can advise or do about it
Sent from my GT-N7105T using xda premium
It automatically inserts space when you're swyping right? If you're not swyping, might as well try out other keyboards.
Disable Dragon and handwriting, it'll make the spacebar a little wider.
If you've a feature request, then go to Swype forum, and post accordingly. It'll get more attention then emailing.
