A different keyboard? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I just purchased my SII and while I love everything about it I'm not liking the keyboard to much. I've come from the Moment with slide keyboard so it was no problem when replying to messages and being able to read what I was replying to. With the SII when I replay in landscape the keyboard fills most the screen and the text box takes care of the rest. I would have thought you could slide the text box down to read the message but it's not doing that. Any suggestions or different keyboards to try that would allow me to see the message I'm replying to while typing?

You can try BetterKeyboard from off the Amazon Market. It was initially up on the normal android market. It costs like three bucks but its well worth it. Its very very feature rich and its the only one that, off the top of my head, has the ability to not show a text box in landscape and just show a keyboard for input. It warns against only working on large screens like tablets, but I've rarely ever had it cause issues for me on this phone.

I would like to see the text box but also have the ability to slide the box down to quickly read the message then finish typing my reply. Maybe it's a different sms app I need? I'm also not a big fan of the little comic book chat boxes. I'd like to see the message fill the entire screen left to right when in landscape.

Oh I'm sorry man, I thought were asking for something entirely different. H'm... hold on moment.
**Edit**
I'm still not entirely sure if this is what you're looking for for.. but as for messages not coming up full screen so to speak and being stuck inside little bubbles, you can use Handcent SMS (my preference) though GOSMS or ChompSMS might do the same thing. I can completely customize my interface so that it looks however I want it. Down to the font and font color of each individual thread, the bubble style of each individual thread, the background image for each thread, etc etc etc. Its neat. Two screenies for you. One with bubbles in landscape. One without.

Is there any way to customize the keyboard? As in make a wider space bar? I keep hitting the . button instead of the space button

Here are the screenies.
**EDIT** Sorry they aren't hi-res. It wont let me upload hi-res pics from my phone using the premium app. Idk why

I use thumb keyboard

I have started using Perfect Keyboard as I love how it does the macro text replacement kind of like the blackberry's and windows mobile keyboards used to. I can just type br and it will expand it to whatever I want (currently my email address) . I also like the split screen in landscape mode that give you a number pad between the split.
The developer is a member here at XDA.
I do like swyping, does anyone know if the newer versions have customized text replacement or macros? The version of swype that came pre-installed doesn't.

ISO a keyboard that toggles between the number and letters pads.

Anyone know of one? Each time use my spreadsheet app I have to change to the number keypad which is cumbersome. Thanks in advance.

Not sure that I understand the question, but I use Swift key x.
One of my favorite features is the fact that it toggles between the keyboard and a regular style number pad instead of the annoying top row numbers.

Ooh....my bad. I mis-understood. I was thinking you were changing between numbers and letters in the same text input box. If you are changing cells then it wouldn't work like you want it to. It defaults to letters.

I agree it does get a little tight on the gs2...try this out on the perfect keyboard. Goto settings-tweaks- and toggle auto return to alpha and toggle numeric keypad on that screen. These will effect the portrait setup. Not sure if it will produce the desired effect when toggling between cells. Try to use the tab or next on the keyboard instead of touching the cell on the screen. I think that is what is resetting you keyboard. Or you may see if the t-9 setup will work.

Thumb keyboard problems.

I love this keyboard because of the auto correct feature and the amount of options you can choose. For some reason while I'm typing sometimes it will do double letters and it's at random. Sometimes it will look like this "HHey what aree you doing?" Am I the only one with this issue. Using it on my completely stock AT&T galaxy s3.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
I haven't experienced that issue but it will ocasionally say I hit a letter than I didnt
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium
It's my favourite keyboard, I use it every day in the past 10 months or so, didn't have this problem either. (Used it on atrix, vivid and hox). Maybe the screen is a little too sensitive?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
There is no way of adjusting the sensitivity of the screen from my understanding. I just am curious if I'm the only one to have this problem or if someone else has experienced it at all doing the same thing. I don't know I'll try not typing so light and see if that makes a difference. If someone has had this problem and they fixed it please let me know how.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Has anyone seen if maybe it's the speed at which you're typing. If I type slow its not so bad. If I start typing faster it starts putting the double letters. Just trying to figure this out. Thanks for the information in advance.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
I have the same issue. I type pretty fast and it always has that double letter issue and even sometimes has double words even though I only enter it once. I decided to stick with the stock ics keyboard from the play store which works great without any typos with my quick typing

I definitely have this issue, and am using 4.6.00.147 version of the app (the most recent I believe) as I don't see any update in the Play Store. I love this keyboard, but this part of it is very frustrating. So much to the point that I went back to the stock AOSP keyboard, but I want this to be fixed.
EDITED: I've reached out to the developer to see if there is any idea on what's causing/how to fix. I will post any updates if I get any that are constructive.

Is there a way to wrap text during Web browsing?

Whenever I'm reading a long text in paragraph format or something on the Web, if I double tap the text it just zooms in, I remember on my old phones the text would automatically adjust in size and wrap so I wouldn't have to keep side scrolling. Any way to enable this on the note 2? Thanks

I wondered the same thing very annoying when browsing. I thought all android phones did it however ive only owned HTC phones for the past 7 years so guess its an HTC thing. Is there an app or something that will enable this feature? Sure is nice when you double tap and the web page resizes so you can read it all and dont have to squint to see the text..
Pretty sure just normal double taps and pinch to zoom are all you got on non htc phones

I'm 100% sure this isn't what the OP is wanting. HTC had text reflow no matter what level of zoom you did on a webpage. Non-HTC phones don't. This setting you are referring to in browser options has never made any difference on my Nexus or my Note 2. All the sites I use already display to fit the screen. I've tested it and I can't see a site where it actually shows the intended effect. Do you have a website example?

Dolphin Browser does do what the OP asked for. That's why I replied to his post.
Respectfully disagree since I tried Dolphin mini and the regular Dolphin and neither did what he asked. Maybe I'm wrong. The op isn't looking for Auto fitting of text to the initial page. While that may be a good alternative, he wants text reflow no matter what level of zoom, continuously. That is an htc thing

That's what I thought he was asking and that's how Dolphin is working for me. Under 'settings' / 'Web Content', I have 'Auto-fit Pages' turned on and it reflows the text as I zoom in and out. I also have my 'User Agent' set to desktop but I'm not sure that matters. It works for me.
(I just tried it to make sure I'm not crazy and it works perfectly. It will reflow the text to fit my screen regardless of zoom level.)

Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
He is right. The predictive powers are ridiculously good. I can almost type faster on it than a regular laptop. That is partly due to a superior UI also.
Downside: no emoji, no abbreviated shortcuts. The latter is somewhat mitigated by the fact prediction is so astoundingly good and fast.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Yea, I miss the abbreviated shortcuts. Still easier to punctuate and get smilies quickly on Swype.
I like the ability to swype without having to change to a different keyboard. And as someone said before, it does keep up with fast typing!

Keyboard Influenced by SwiftKey Team?

Not really sure why people think that the SwiftKey devs did any meaningful work with the Note II keyboard. In my opinion, it is garbage in comparison and offers no basic functionality beyond SwiftKey 3. It's a real shame you lose S pen support using an alternative keyboard. Do you really prefer the default keyboard? There is no way I can write anywhere as fast as I can text with basic SwiftKey 3. Thoughts?

+1... exactly what I think...
Yes, the number row counts for something, no doubt, but when I'm wailing away at the keyboard, it is normally to hit letter keys, and not numbers, as good as it is. Simiarly, there are obvious benefits to a hardware querty keyboard, but will few will buy one despite the utility. Now, I say this as someone who doesn't spend a great deal of time working in spreadsheets. Something like that is something I could imagine skipping plain SwiftKey for. What do you use a number row for?

I dont think you get it. Moving the special characters onto an additional row of keys, so I dont have to toggle to another keyboard +being able to hit the numbers on the same screen +swype on the same keyboard... all adds up. Now, if I could change two things; spacebar to autocorrect and being able to edit the keyboards user dictionary, that would be perfection.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
Yes, that's what I'm talking about, the space bar and the auto complete/correct. To me, that IS SwiftKey. If I have to reach up for every word, that is not swift and I could definitely do without it. Considering what you said, if the only influence that SwiftKey had in the Samsung keyboard is the "learning" phase, how is it learning anything if you have to select your words manually and can't change the dictionary?
Before I had the Note 2 I used swift key on all my phones. However with the Note I've been using Swype for the 1st time and love it. So much so I've removed swift key. Swype is nice when you're one handing this beast and is the only reason I even tried using it in the 1st place. I've also found it to be really intuitive. Once swift key have their version of Swype up and running I'll give it another shot.

I still prefer to type with both hands, then again, I find the stock samsung keyboard good enough that it's my daily driver (although i wish the auto correct kicks in automatically... I don't have time to type and then click on the auto correct, just auto correct when i move to the next word).
I only use the swipe keyboard when i'm using 1 handed or the s pen as regular typing should be done with 2 hands. I did come from a sensation so, i was used to their trace keyboard

I had the same problem not liking the lack of space bar for autocorrect until I realized it was the same distance to hit the autocorrected word vs the spacebar. Once I broke that habit swiftkey and swype were forgotten about. Typing on mispelled words to autocorrect em has been nice on the stock sammy keyboard.

Once I became comfortable with Swype I found that I'm much faster and proficient with it than finger pecking. It took me about a day to really start liking it. Prior to the Note 2 I never used Swype, I also viewed it as a gimmick. Now I absolutely love it!

The new swiftkey function with the spacebar seems nice, just wish they would separate the number keys at the top like on the stock keyboard. Once the new swiftkey comes out I will probably give it a try again.
I've noticed that there are places where the Swype keyboard isn't inserting spaces after words, such as in the dolphin browser. Is this a glitch or just me?
