I have a simple question and i think ive seen some mention of it, but nothing quite definitive
I want to root my SGSIIX from Telus(989D), and ive figured out that i can follow the same instructions as the T-mobile version here:

It suggests a ROM below that was originally posted for the T-mobile ver, is there any T-mobile branding on it visually such as boot screens etc?
Also...
If a ROM works flawlessly on the tmobile version, will it also work flawlessly on the telus version by default. Ive been eyeballing the possibility of Cyanogen or MIUI, and juggernaut...but i wanna make sure EVERYTHING works perfectly after doing so, or if there are certain things that might not work

yes, they are identical software and hardware
i rooted the phone today there is alot of apps in the t-mobile version compare to the telus one I followed the instructions from this page

the 4g network was gone could not connect to it only 3g was working
i uninstalled most apps with titanium backup pro but i end restoring to the back up i made from CWR
gonna give it another try when they are going to release a rom that is from telus version of the phone

The 4g is broken for me to ...it seems like the modders are only interested in the t-mobile version to, so it looks like even rooting(based on the fact that the rooted rom is also a t-mob) wont even be possible

What do you mean rooting? All you need to do is flash CWM and then the SU package, no need to change any ROM at all.
I rooted my Telus device using the T-Mobile instructions and all was well at home, it stayed on the Telus network and also keep 4G speed.
I went to work with it, where Telus service is very poor, and as soon as I lost Telus it roamed to Rogers and did not try and return to Telus even though I was in an area where Telus signal was good.
In the end I changed the device to wcdma mode only and set the device to manual provider and selected Telus and have had no problems with 4G or not being on Telus...

Do you happen to have a link? I followed a guide on this forum that said the easiest way was to flash the rom!
I rooted my phone, it still said 4G.
When I installed beastMOD it says 3G. But I am definitely getting 4G speeds (20mbps). So.. maybe a bug with the difference in phones?

trust me...stick with the telus rom. its actually better code then tmob. newer drivers and less debug code. I tried the tmob and its gawd aweful. if u want goodies...slap a kernel on it then theme it. best way to go imho.

For Telus you don't need to change roms when you root.
I'm running the stock rom on my phone with a modified kernel to allow the phone to run faster and the v6 memory mod as well as removing the clock from notification bar.
Installed Titanium and removed a bunch of the crap that came stock with phone too.

I was using Jugs kernel but I switched to Synergy and like it better.
And yes.. I just download it to my sd card and install it thru CWM

Get the recovery.tar from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315390
Flash that through ODIN (PDA mode in ODIN, Download mode on Phone)
Then, place the SU update (http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-3.0.5-efgh-signed.zip) on the root of the SD card. Reboot to recovery, select install zip from SD Card and select the SU update. Reboot and you're rooted without having to use another ROM.
The reason why you keep getting a 3G signal when you are getting 4G speeds is because you are using a T-Mobile ROM. The way the Telus one works, if you don't have a ROM that is based off of Telus's source code, even though everything works perfectly fine, your signal will be "3G". It's really only an aesthetic thing, as the speeds themselves are 4G.
So what kernel do you recomend.

Not sure for kernel, I just used the stock one. I just finished flashing Synergy, haven't tried anything yet! I seem to have this issue where I need to re-search for my network after going into download mode (normal behavior?) so I need to get that working before I want to benchmark.
I fully tested a custom juggernaut rom and a rooted Telus stock rom and the juggernaut rom is waaayyy better. Smoother more options as well as better signal. True it says 3g but actually I get better speeds than stcok Telus rom. In my opinion after several tests don't use stock Telus. It may be better code than T-Mobile stock rom but custom juggernaut rom is way better

I once had a Fascinate, when i flashed a voodoo mod kernel and tried to remove it, the phone became bricked and the entire insides of the phone had to be replaced
Can flashing a kernel mess with the boot loader(which i assume is cwm)? Is there anything i need to do differently when changing kernels as well, cause so far with ROMS ive just been resetting and flashing with ease.Also do Roms come with kernels, so flashing a rom will either go back to default/other kernels?
I would just like to say that I have searched for a definitive answer for a couple days with no luck.
Background: I had a Samsung Galaxy S II X (SGH-T989D) from Telus and I wanted to try root it and flash it a few months ago. I was not sure about what I was doing and ended up bricking it - without a stock kernel to go back to. I have received my replacement phone through Best Buy and have been running stock ever since.
I want to do this the proper way and really can't afford to brick another one right now.

Question 1) I would like to if it is possible for me to create a backup of the stock kernel from my phone now, so that if anything breaks, I can reset it to stock. I found this post but the links are dead.
Question 2) If it is possible for me to create a backup of the stock kernel, how would I go about it? I've looked but I'm not really sure what I'm looking for in the way of an answer here so if you could point me in the right direction that would be great.

Question 3) This one is confusing for me. Are SGH-T989 ROMs compatible with my phone? Question 4) This is my last question. If all of the above is impossible/will not work for my phone, I would just like to know if it is possible to root my phone without breaking it. If I understood correctly, to root it I must flash it? I'm not sure how that works/what the difference is between flashing/rooting or how they are connected.

B) Every SGH-T989 ROM is compatible with our phones. They are the exact same hardware wise. Just be careful you don't flash any other type of GALAXY S II ROM they will brick you.
C) to root, all you need to do is flash the custom recovery in Odin and flash superuser or a custom ROM. Look in development there is a sticky for it.

Hello All,
Im not sure if im in the right section here.
Ill just jump right in , in the hopes that someone can shed some light on radio's and what they do exactly.
I just updated my rom from GB to Jelly Bean (SlimBean) and i am just loving it , its a fantastic rom.
However , even after turning on enable noise suppression in the options , my gf is telling me it doesnt sound as good as it used to.
Would this be something that flashing a new radio would fix?
Should i be flashing a new radio either way since ive updated to a new OS ?
My baseband shows UNKNOWN , its showing a 3g icon when i have 4g, altho its faster than 3g i find it a tad slower in downloading than it was before in GB.
Any help appreciated.

Edit : I should mention i have : Telus_SGH-T989D_TLLE4_radio downloaded , im just unsure whether flashing this will help or not , and ive read that flashing the wrong radio can really screw your phone up.
Is there a way to backup my current radio just in case ?? I have TWRP installed...
Flashing the wrong radio can't 'really screw up' the phone, relatively speaking. Flash some of the radios found here http://www.4shared.com/folder/0773wt7U/SGH-T989_Radios.html and try calling. You can make a NAND backup of your phone if you're especially paranoid but if your radio does screw up by flashing, just download and flash the TELUS radio again (it's in the link). If you find one that works, stick with it. If not, flash back to your default Telus radio and try other ROMS.

I'm pretty sure that if something can be flashed on T989 (T-Mobile), it can be flashed on T989D (Telus/Koodo). I understand that the are just some small differences wrt access to download mode and recovery. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2079776

Short answer is yes! Everything you will find here is working perfectly fine on the canadian version.

I have a T989D on Koodo which I've been messing with quite extensively, and yeah, everything is basically the same. The download/recovery mode linked above is the only major difference.
One thing of note, if you end up messing up the device and need to fully reflash from Odin, the t-mobile stock may not work. I tried over and over to recover from what was essentially a brick (ultra, ultra slow) and it just stayed that slow, even though it did seem to boot and connect and everything. It was totally unusable, however.
I found a different one that did work however, I can't seem to find the post anymore but I'm sure you'll be able to get it if you need it, there seem to be others out there with the same name, but not quite the same filesize. That shouldn't really matter as you'll doubtless go back to a custom rom anyway, the point is just to get you back to something that works.
For reference, the name of the one that worked for me is "SGH-T989_UVLH1_Stock_Odex_zipaligned_signed.zip" and it's 422 MB. This post seems to have a Koodo stock zip as well as the T-mobile one, it's about 100MB less but again, that really shouldn't matter so long as it's Koodo.
Hopefully you'll never need to use it, but I just wanted to let you know that even if you have to recover and some files don't seem to be working, keep trying, because the correct ones are out there! Just may need to search a bit for 'em

A few more things SGH-T989D owners may want to be aware of:
1) This is an excellent resource: [ROM][Stock]T989UVLI4 (4.0.4) ♛ T989DTLLE4 (4.0.3) ♛ T989DTLLG2[ODIN][TWRP/CWM]
2) You might want to search and replace all "T989" with "T989D" in build.prop
" " replace all "TLLG2" with whatever radio your new ROM is using.
If you're on Koodo you might want to assign that to the ro.carrier property
3) If you've got a data plan with you might want to search the web for your carrier's apn info and insert it into "Settings|Wireless & networks|Mobile networks"
Note: This stuff is optional in the sense that your stuff is probably going to work if you don't make these changes. I haven't always updated all this after switching to a new custom rom, but I did notice that I showed up on the Telus network as a T989 as opposed to a T989D on the Koodo network. Really they're the same network but ... I don't know. Maybe I just over think things... I do like the fact that when I plug my phone into the computer or go to the play store or whatever that my phone reports as what it actually is and what radio it uses etc. I don't really care that much as long as my stuff works and I have access to apps that are appropriate for the hardware I'm using. YMMV.
Note2: Most of this info can be gleaned from your stock rom's "CSC" folder and build.prop file. When I have a little more time I'll write this up so its more understandable for those new to flashing Roms. Just wanted to mention that there are a few other tiny, nearly insignificant differences btw the T989 and T989D so that the OP and/or others can address these points if they choose to. At least not be surprised if it looks as though they're using data on a network with a different phone.
Note3: Maybe the only thing that matters is an imei number from your SIM. I don't really know. Be glad to be "told" by anyone that knows. I just know that these things are different even if they don't make a bit of difference in practice.

Hello I'm new to posting on the forums, sorry If I've missed the answer to this question already!
I have a Koodo SGH-T989D that I got in September, before that I was using a non smart flip phone . So I'm quite new to this whole rom business, but even android/ smart phone os in general.
I've been able to flash many roms in the past couple months and have a good understanding of what it is i'm doing. Never had an issue I couldnt fix myself actually, so I've never made an account.
This latest problem has me puzzled though, I've totally lost data connection on my s2x while using any radio. I use SGH-T989D_TLLG2_Koodo_radio but I tried UVLI4 just to see.
However I did change a few things up from my usual routine to flash 4.2.1
1: changed twrp to 2.4.1.0 from 2.2 cwm flashable zip
2: moved all my zips to sd card and formatted internal memory(to eliminate possible issues)
Before this I was using twrp 2.2 and only doing a clean install, not formatting internal sd without any issues or instability.
I've been on [4.2.1 | 4.2.2] AOKP :: jb-mr1 :: build 3 and very impressed with it, except this one issue.
In the thread there is a post that refers to getting data working with koodo, so I think its an apn/proxy setting. I just am not sure where I would have to change these settings.
Just restored a recent nandroid backup and everything works fine.
Can anyone help me out, any insight or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Go to settings > wireless and network, more... > mobile networks > access point names > then hit your options button > New APN > enter the details found on the page linked above.

Ususally associated with radio upgrades; but rather than get too particular, its good practice to check the apn info after any ROM upgrade. If you think about it, any of the hercules upgrades are going to be the same across the board for any given update. Where they're different is where we want to pay particular attention. In this case, carrier specific information.

-Second, how do you perform a nandroid backup? I know that this is kind of a safety net to your device if it ever gets soft-bricked, but how do you do it? I have not had a clear explanation on how to do it.
-Third, I know that CyanogenMod is one of the most stable custom ROMS that there is out there, but does it offer Pure Android?

I'm going through this same process now, and am new also--I rooted an old mytouch 3g slide and flashed CM7 on it. Afterwards it was bit buggy, but it was a bit buggy before too, hardware issues I think.
I think rooting in and of itself shouldn't mess up your phone, but if you don't do it correctly it could surely screw things up.
Do you have the T999 or T999L? which version will matter in terms of ROM flashing details (for example, I have the T999L, which is the LTE version)
Let me know of the progress you have on these questions!

I unfortunately have the T999. I know that mine won't be able to get LTE which is sad, but is this something that I MUST look into before flashing a ROM? Like are the t999 and T999L that different, I mean it is ONE chip.

It's something to be aware of. I believe most of the T-mobile gs3 ROMS are built with the T999 in mind though, so you shouldn't really worry too much.

Rooting does nothing but give you SuperUser access to your phone. That is literally all it does. Now what you do with it can cause major headaches.

Install a custom recovery such as TWRP or Clockwork (CWR), then boot into recovery via key combo (Power+VolDown+Home, see blue light at top left and release the keys). From there you will see how Back Up/Restore options.
-Third, I know that CyanogenMod is one of the most stable custom ROMS that there is out there, but does it offer Pure Android?
Many ROMs out there. Just need to read the OPs for what you want.

Not allowed and don't ask this type of question. All it ever turns into is an EPeen contest and will surely get the thread closed down.

This is exactly what a Nandroid backup is for. Something that you don't like or something borks, then just boot into recovery and restore your last working ROM backup. Kind of the point. Not sure I have ever heard of a ROM losing video playback as all are pretty much optimized nowadays.

See my part above about Rooting. You are correct in that it doesn't affect anything whatsoever. It is what you do with it.
I am pretty sure that most are based off T999 code and in order to have the LTE, you have to flash the LTE modem. Might want to ask Doc about that as he has/had the T999L.
Also, CM7 was a long time ago and things have massively progress since then.

I unfortunately have the T999. I know that mine won't be able to get LTE which is sad, but is this something that I MUST look into before flashing a ROM? Like are the t999 and T999L that different, I mean it is ONE chip.

It's something to be aware of. I believe most of the T-mobile gs3 ROMS are built with the T999 in mind though, so you shouldn't really worry too much.

This is false. You don't need 10 Thanks to get your credentials. You need 10 posts in order to lose the Captcha and be able to post in the Development threads. Please do not post a question in the Dev thread or even worse a "Thanks". This link should explain it all for you.
