[NOOB] About to get a Desire CDMA, what to do to get ICS/JB? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So far everything I've read here pertains to the GSM version. Am I still fine going ahead with what is posted? I read a thread on not using the hboots for GSM (idk what hboots are haha). Can someone dumb this down for me a bit? Switching over from the Mesmerize (horrible data drops on anything 2.3+ due to bad hardware, and samsung ditching the issue and not issuing a recall), everything was a much simpler process. Thanks in advance guys!!

Install a CDMA ICS/ JB from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946517

Anything to prep it for it? It's on stock 2.2. Also that rom looks a bit iffy, I think I've seen one that records 720p fine and plays it back as well.

I got the ROM you posted to work... but is it the only one? I'd prefer one that is more stable and for the CDMA Desire.

There aren't too many roms for the CDMA version of the desire.

Check out this thread. It has every rom in the desire section.

I've seen this. Looks miserable :/
Any kitchens available for bravoc? I have the feeling the roms for bravo and bravoc are identical, except for radio and hboot.

They aren't identical. The two phones have slight hardware differences.

So I've found no functional roms for bravoc that are functional out of the box... croniccorey's works after the fixes... any idea if it is possible to port an ics/jb rom with a cm7 base?

[Q] Why would a GSM ROM brick the CDMA Desire?

I wondering why flashing a GSM ROM would brick a CDMA Desire? Flashing just a ROM shouldn't affect the radio so what is the primary issue. From there, I guess my next question would be what is need to port a GSM to CDMA?

Sorry - but you are essentially wrong here.
The Snapdragon SoCs that power both devices essentially have two cores on them - one which handles the OS, and one which handles the radio. For the most part, the OS "core" (which is the ARMv7 part) is going to be identical on both the GSM and CDMA Desires, and the difference lies in the radio core.
However, that is not to say that flashing a GSM ROM (without radio of course) on a CDMA Desire will brick it, but I'd say it was fairly unlikely since recovery should be unaffected.
When I had my Hero, the first leak of an Eclair ROM came from the Sprint Hero (a CDMA device) and it was relatively easily ported to the GSM Desire.
Regard,
Dave

Interesting. So the fundamental difference is probably in the kernel and roms would have to be built from there on up?
could u basically flash a gsm kernel to a cdma phone then? since it wont change the radio. (noob question i guess)
or if u cant, what is the difference between gsm and cdma kernels?

why do you want to take the risk? I don't really understand kernal that well other than its like the super basic coding of the operating system or something like that, but you might be hard pressed to find such a kernal anyways and I really don't think that's enough to make it work in the first place. All the software/firmware/radio versions/etc... have to match up or "sychronize" so to speak is my understanding. And yes Radios do come with stock ROM's, but they sometimes don't always come with Custom or cooked ROM's. Sometimes I flash a stock ROM just to get the stock radio then I reflash a custom ROM back to it for example so I have the stock radio with a custom ROM like mighty ROM

Did you mean to quote me? Are you replying to me? Most CDMA only phones don't use sim cards and have no slot for them. Additionally the only countries that use CDMA is USA, Japan, South Korea, and India, all the phones in the rest of the world use GSM/SIM technology. Theres only a few exceptions to the CDMA only rule such as the touch pro 2 which is designed/capable to work both on CDMA and GSM networks

Flashed many times GSM ROM to my CDMA Desire, just to check if it works... Didn't bricked my phone totally - recovery was working fine. I use it as a pad, no cellular connection, so I figured out if OS part will work than I don't mind. But it didn't, 95% of a time. I think Ethereal2_R3_Final was the only one that worked, but not sure if it is GSM now. Go and play around - it's reasonably safe. Running Oxygen CDMA now.
what would you recommend to get your device up and running again if your back up recovery fails?

USCC Desire --> Froyo and root?

Hi guys,
My girlfriend has a Desire on US Cellular. It's running 2.1 build 1.23.573.2 and bootloader 0.98.0000. I need to get this thing running HTC Sense 2.2 with root.
I have rooted my Droid2 with ADB and am running a custom ROM so I know the basics. I have read all about flashing ROMs and debranding and what not but I am just unsure about a few things like which ROM do I need, do I need to change radios, should I root before/after, are there pre-rooted HTC Froyo ROMs, etc.
I think at this point I want to just get an official HTC 2.2 on it and then root afterwards
Any help would be awesome. Thanks.
Edit: I have looked around briefly and would have searched but it's currently down.
Edit #2: Mods, sorry I forgot to put [Q] in the title.
1) You need to root your phone first. Use unrEVOked. Search for it.
2) Find the ROM you WANT in Development - from there it's explained whether or not you need another radio etc.

Thank you. I've got it rooted so now it is a matter of figuring out what ROM to use.
I am finding that 95% of discussion in the Development forum is with regards to GSM devices -- ROMs for GSM devices will not work on a CDMA device, correct?

Correct. Installing a GSM ROM will brick the phone. There really isn't much out yet when it comes to CDMA ROMs for the Desire.
I think this is about it and it's very buggy at the moment.

[Q] nTelos (CDMA) Desire ROM options

I have an nTelos Desire still on stock 2.1 and rooted using unrevoked so it has S-OFF.
I'd like to know which Sense-based ROMs (don't like AOSP, sorry) would be available for me. I already have a zip file for the nTelos APNs (if needed, really) but can't seem to find a definitive answer if any of the cool Kingdom/Pyramid-based ROMs would work with my version of the phone, including any radio updates as it's still on radio 2.05.10.00.11. I haven't been able to really find any info on anything nTelos specific and that's understandable since it's a pretty small regional carrier (I think it's owned by USCC or Cell South, not sure). Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Bump in the night.
I have a desire on a CDMA network, and the best CDMA ROMs I've found are CM7, oxygen, and MIUI.

Thanks but I'm not a fan of MIUI or AOSP-based ROMs. Looking for a good Sense-based ROM that's either Froyo or Gingerbread.

is it posiible to port gsm ics roms to bravoc

Ok so there is alot of development for bravo on ics but only one option for bravoc, as far as ics roms go. Is it possible to change a few files and port the rom to cdma. I read somewhere that you can just replace the kernel with a cdma one, but i have not tested that because I cant seem to get the bravoc kernels from the bcm cm9 rom by DK_zero-cool

When I use to have my desire, flashing a CDMA kernel over a GSM ROM never seemed to work for me. I did successfully boot an ICS ROM, however, by overwriting some files inside the ROM (can't remember which ones). The only problem was that it was not fully functional and had many problems... There is one ICS ROM that I know of that works with the CDMA version of the desire: see HERE.
Guess I'll stick to bcm and hope the lagging is getting fixed

Porting GSM Roms to CDMA Desire

So as I stalked around here for a bit, I never realized that GSM roms and a CDMA phone don't match... either way, I've gone through and purchased an old HTC Desire that I assumed would be able to run ParanoidAndroid and MIUI Jelly Bean without issue... but no. So, any easy way to port Roms? I'm assuming it must just be a different radio or hboot config..
Hello again
When you flash a rom, you don't change radio and hboot. They survive flashing everytime.
There are hardware differences between the two phones.
You could port parandroid by taking cronny's JB as a base, and using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1908008
Thanks very much, will see what can be done. Also, the issues with these phones on ICS and JB, mainly the tearing and lack of proper acceleration in Camera and 720p playback... are they kernel dependent or driver? Are they stored in the boot.img or elsewhere?
Also, check this out: http://d-h.st/Sal
Looks like I'm in business.
