[Q] Kies - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Had a problem with Kies once before, but i want to try again. Somebody please help me with this: With my SGSIII plugged into my computer, and Kies open, which tab do i click on to copy all my music and photos into Kies, while still leaving the originals on my phone. Last time, i must have hit the wrong tab, because i lost all the music that was on my phone. Thanks to Dropbox, i was able to get it back. Thanks for any help that you can give.

Why are you using Kies? Just plug the phone in to a USB port (without Kies running) and you can access the phone as a media device (on windows 7 anyway). Just open up and choose the phone or card depending on where your information is stored. Drag and drop and it copies automatically.

why do you need kies again?
it's a lot slower than just copy and paste all your musics on the drive itself

Can't get it to recognize phone.

Just find the back up option. It'll save a copy of all your contacts, pictures and music as well. It's either on the left or in one of the tabs at the top.

[Q] i freaking HATE MTP...how to transfer files to my phone?

sooo, how are we supposed to transfer files? I finally have my phone working "the way it's supposed to" so the PC sees it and it shows up as an MTP device. I can open and delete files on it, but whenever I try to transfer files, it just says copying... and stays there indefinitely...
i've been having to email myself things, or remove the sd card, put things on it, then copy/paste to the internal card...what the heck does Samsung really want us to do?
i need some help with this please...

I feel ya. I HATE mtp with a passion. That being said, the indefinite copying could be the result of a bad cable and/or a crappy computer.(seen both) my recommendation, fu*k mtp and just push everything with adb. that's what I do. If ur unfamiliar with adb get something like android commander or QTADB. Way less of a headache for me

i just tried with the stock samsung cable, this time got a message saying the device wasn't responding or was disconnected, and the copying stayed there as well.
to the poster who said it's about a crappy computer, that's not very good logic. I can transfer file between my tablets, other phones, portable hard drives, etc. I can play the latest games, use very intensive programs just fine. i just can't seem to transfer via MTP. ****ty computer, or ****ty transfer protocol? i think the latter.
Make sure you have the right driver installed. Here is a link to install it manually if need be.
I had that problem then I enabled usb debugging now my pc recognizes it as a mass storage device and transfers files flawlessly. I would try that.
My PC wont install the drivers. Im pretty much completely SOL. Ive tried multiple cables.
Air droid is a alternative method.

You have to uninstall old drivers first and reboot then plug phone in. Also if you have wifi then you can transfer files back and forth without a cable ot mtp.

Can't put movies on the Note II

Hello,
When I try to drag & drop movies to my Note II I am getting an error. I did a search on Google and I the answer I got is that the phone isn't in UMS mode. Then I searched how to put my Note II in UMS mode but the answer was: it can't. Although the answer isn't positive I am just putting up a new thread, maybe someone actually does know how to do this.
Thank you!

Might help if you posted up the error you are getting.
Whilst the Note 2 doesn't support UMS, it does support MTP, so I am assuming, since you've mentioned dragging and dropping, that this is working and you are seeing your Note 2 as a device.
How big are the movies you are trying to copy onto your Note 2?
Regards,
Dave

Hello Dave,
Thank you for your reply.
When I am trying to drag & drop the movie I am not getting a error specifically, but a window that comes up with the message: windows explorer isn't reacting.
That is correct, I am seeing my Note 2 as a device, in particular a portable media player. Actually it isn't a movie but a Sopranos episode. It's about 2/3 gigabytes big.
I really can't figure out why it doesn't work.
Thank you.

I would like a faster solution for bigger files. But thank you anyways, I'll do it via this app till I got an solid solution.
Try transferring a smaller video file to see if that makes a difference. Do you have any problems transferring other file types (pics, text)?

I know if your memory is in FAT32 format you cannot place files on it larger than 4GB. Also if you are rooted there is an app(s) in the market for Samsung devices that switches your phone from MTP to the Android 2.3.3 USB Mass Storage Mode that might yield better results for you. I believe it is "USB Mode Switch" on Google Play. There is also a way to do it though ADB.

3rd time today I think im recommending goodsync If your devices are on the same network the transfer speed is around 2-4Mb/sec but beats connecting wires and such. Give it a shot.

No, it's a common problem.
Perhaps you should mention what format video file it is. Natively it will only allow you to transfer mp4 files. Any other files and mtp will ask if you want to convert the file. Perhaps the mtp is trying to convert the video file before the transfer. That may be the problem you are experiencing.

Similar to dropbox but much faster. Drop box syncs the same folders. With goodsync you can choose which folder to sync with what. Secondly dropbox stores data in the air, goodsync doesnt.

What version of windows? Windows can not see the Note2 as an external hard drive-device to drag & drop to?
What about transferring the files to a micro-sdhc card on your pc then putting it in your Note2 (which you could transfer to internal memory if you want)?
Alternatively, what about uploading to Google Drive or Dropbox & downloading it to the Note 2?

I would suggest that if you are getting a message about Windows Explorer not reacting, the problem is more likely related to the PC, not the Note.
Have you tried on a different PC?

Is not the PC. I've seen this same problem many times since Google implemented MTP, it's complete garbage.
Windows is erroring because the transfer is damned slow that it just times out on large files. I've pretty much given up trying and just take the SD card out and plug it in to my card reader now; it's faster and actually WORKS.

Sorry, but I've transferred films larger than this without error, so I cannot agree with your findings.
YMMV, but thus far I have not had to remove the sdcard from my Note 2 in order to transfer a movie to my device. The largest individual file I've transferred came in at a shade under 2GB, but I've also transferred over 4GB total in multiple files without issue.

Dave.

I had a similar issue, the fix isn't exactly something you'd think of.
Do you have the DivX codec installed on your PC?
If yes, uninstall it. Doing so fixed the issue for me.
Any mkv file I tried transferring would crash Windows Explorer until I uninstalled the DivX codec.

[[[[Q]]]] What you peeps using to pass Files ???

Sup peeps..
was wondering what people were using to pass files from computer to phone or vice versa... i know in windows its simple, but on mac, the phone doesn't seem to show..
I have problems with my Samsung phones with OS X, that is if they are rooted and Kies is installed. I have a 17" MBP and use an express slot 3/4 card reader to pop my microsd into a sd card and go from there.
I have found that an app called Airdroid (free) allows you to open a web browser and connect to your phone and have full access of it.
yeah, thing is, i wanted to use KIES but to be blunt, it is S**T, i've used kies wi-fi and its still slow as hell so im looking for an alternative
i was having issues with the SD card, which ever i used (tried about 4)
I searched online and nothing seemed to work, until i saw one which told me to insert the SD as quick as i could, becuase if stick in the SD slowly it won't read it, ODD as hell.... funnily enough it worked !!

Turn it on and plug it into a computer then copy everything out of both external and internal storage. The phone auto mounts to computers.
Also, you could use a hdmi cord with a compatible end to plug the phone into a tv, then while the screen is displaying on the tv do a factory reset

My wife had dropped her S3 on floor shattering screen. Now luckely insurance have sent a new device, but I need to get pictures that were one the device copied over (Failed SD card and phone writes pictures on internal memory). But when I connect phone to computer (Vista 7), it doesn't show up in Computer to be able see or access the contents of the phone. Phone does turn on and connects to WiFi as I hear same notification for Facebook and such at same time as her new and working device.
Is there any other ways to access it?
Any help would be greatly appriciated
Use a SD card to copy the photos from internal memory to SD card. If you had an SD card in the device that won't read then try a new SD card.
You can try new usb cable.
Make sure that you have the right Samsung drivers installed and working correctly (you can use the new S3 to test this). Download from Samsung website and install or reinstall if need to.
There are apps that allow your device's files to be accessed through WiFi. Like WiFi File Explorer Pro, WiFi File Transfer Pro, etc.
You can copy photos to cloud storage like Box, Dropbox, Sky drive, Amazon Cloud Drive, etc.
You can copy them to cloud photo gallerys like Google+ photos, Flickr, etc.
Bump, and S Beam can be used to transfer the photos.
If that doesn't do it, then out of luck.
Next time set the photos to be saved to external SD card. The settings should be in the camera settings (Note 2, S3, and S4)
FYI - this is Galaxy Note 2 forum. But that fine you post this here. Both Note 2 and S3 should be close enough to help with this.

If new cable doesn't work in allowing you to see the files in your device from computer, then you are out of luck. Sorry.
Next time set the photos to be saved to external SD card. The settings should be in the camera settings.
Again sorry for the loss of the photos.

I know this doesn't help you with your problem but, you can set up dropbox to automatically upload pics as you take them. That's what I do and I don't have to worry about losing pics. They are generally on my pc before I get home from wherever I took them. Again, sorry I can't help you but, hopefully this helps prevent problems in the future

Awesome idea. Google+ photos does the same.
To the Op - The ideas we are giving you is to have the photos automatically go somewhere that you can retrieve them without needing the device. SD cards, cloud storage and cloud photo gallerys are awesome ways to make sure that this doesn't happen again.
Again sorry for the loss of the photos and memories.

As a technician, I am afraid that the user could cause damage to the new device in doing this.
But yes, if hired to retrieve the photos and this was the only way then I would do this method. And still give them time to return the damaged device to the insurance.
Good idea.
You could possibly buy an mhl adapter and connect it to your tv/monitor and then copy the files to a new sd card or upload them to the cloud.

This seems like a good idea- unless you have to turn on the option to send signals to tv like laptops and such.
You should try what someone else mentioned- pushing with ADB if you have custom recovery. Go on youtube and find your custom recover and 'blind' navigate yourself through your recovery. (See where approx which option is where and press it and attempt to use ADB or something/)
