ok so today some bad news (( i broke my s3 screen but i would really like all my pictures and videos back. it was rooted with cyanmod 10.1 all im asking is there any app or something that would be able to access the storage on my s3 i have alot of important documents and pictures on there of my daughter.. anything would help thank you
Turn it on and plug it into a computer then copy everything out of both external and internal storage. The phone auto mounts to computers.
Also, you could use a hdmi cord with a compatible end to plug the phone into a tv, then while the screen is displaying on the tv do a factory reset

well its weird cuz it shows up as a different device. says portable device doesnt show up as like an sdcard would or whatever but im gonna try a different computer ill let u know if that works
i think the reason i cant see the files is because the screen is locked with a passcode. so is there anyway i could just use adb or something im no expert with that so i wouldt kno what to do. any help will help . im desperate to get back the memories i have from videos and pictures on my phone, maybe t mobile would be able to retieve files?

I'm looking at a droid inc that a friend of mine has, the touchscreen and lcd got broken and he's got some pics from a trip to washington that he wants to get off of the phone. the pictures are on the phones internal memory. Do yall have any tips or tricks i can try? he also has a pass swipe thing on it, and i think its locked out from him trying to get into it.
Thanks in advance,

I'm don't know the commands off the top of my head, but search around on how to use ADB pull files from the phone...there should be a guide on how to do it. One thing though, if you're not in USB debugging mode, I'm not sure if it will work.
i know for sure the phone isnt rooted, so it probably doesnt have debugging enabled. i'll have the phone tomorrow night, so i could work on all weekend.
bump, i'll have the phone tonight.

Maybe try HTC Sync? I've never used it, but it may default into a mode which allows you to access the phone.
Plug phone into computer and hopefully get lucky with the optical trackball selecting disk drive.

Never tried this...but it might work for you to get into adb while in recovery. Then just read on up how mount and to pull files.

ok i thought it was like on gingerbread to get to usb storage, but, with ics didnt seem to be the same, connect cable pull down notification bar click usb options.
this takes me to MTP AND PTP but never mounts.
so here is how i did it.
make sure the usb cable is not connected before you start doing this since it will ask you to remove it,
settings/more/usb utilities/ pressed connect storage to pc, pop up asked me to connect cable and last clicked on the turn on usb storage ,confirm clicked ok , voila..
didnt see it somewhere else and since this is a new version "FB17"some of you might think usb storage does not work...
at least to me it wont work the oldway...
usb works for me
it does works for me as well just not the oldway , maybe i need some new drivers? cus its keeps searching for some drivers which i think have to do with ics but they never seem to finish just searching for the last hour , but i thinks is cus of that MTP,PTP options since i didnt have that on gingerbread..
idk u might need new driver my work right away i loading music on it now

might be , i just never had a problem with gingerbread but , ics might just need some extra, will search for some, thanks for the heads up ur is working..
The likely culprit of this is the change in how UMS (USB Mass Storage) behaves in ICS vs how it used to in versions prior to Honeycomb.
If you want a fairly indepth overview of this change from a google engineer head here:

Thanks! Only thing you didn't mention is that you only have to perform this sequence one time. After that, simply pull down the "old way" and click "Turn on USB storage."
Only dif we'll all see (until we get root) is that we can't see both internal and external storage.

unmount sd card to use MTP

My screen got cracked about a month ago, the phone will pwer on, however I cannot see the screen. I received my replacement from the insurance and I haven't sent my old phone back in yet, because I have pictures of my kid on there and quite frankily I think it is bull**** to send it back with that kind of stuff on there. Anyway Asurion sent a threating letter, saying that I owe 500$ if the phone isn't sent in within 10 days, so this is where you guys come in.
I need help retrieving the data from the phone, so that I can have the pictures of my son or if its not possible, I need to wipe it clean so that they cannot (even if they won't) see my stuff. The screen is broken as i mentioned, but it powers on.
Try android screencast.
Turn it on and drop box will do the rest with auto upload (you have to dl the beta on to your comp)(I'm to lazy to link you)
You just have to some how mount it to the computer

Yea without screen functionality it is kinda hard to figure that part out...Is there anyone out there with ADB exp. maybe if I can get in that way I can just pull my DCIM off of the internal storage, but I need to know how.
There are some detailed threads with a ton of adb commands for mounting and unmounting and doing pretty much everything else through adb.
Just search xda for adb commands and you should find a good thread with a bunch lined out.
I'd suggest using HDMI mirroring. You can move everything to your external SD card (via any file explorer) and do that.
You'll need an MHL adapter, though.
From what I am reading if the phone still works just the screen is dead I don't see why you wouldn't be able to just hook it up to your computer and pull everything off then delete everything.

With a broken touch screen how does he enable USB storage mode?
Seriously, I was looking to get more advice than I did, but after all who really helps around here unless they create it and even then they do not offer support any more
Anyways, I took both devices apart and I used the good screen with the old motherboard, hell I even saw the text messages I missed, I uploaded all the photos to my SD and did a reformat on the USB storage to wipe the photos off the phone, because they stayed for some reason.
Thanks, to the guys that gave suggestions.
ok so i dropped my phone and the screen is completely shattered. it turns on and the 4 buttons on the bottom light up but the screen doesn't. i'm gonna be without a phone for a minute since sprint now wants the $100 deductible upfront versus putting it on your bill and we just don't have the $$ right now. anyways i have a question when i used to hook up my phone to the computer and access the usb it would always have 2 drives: one said SD Card and the other said Phone. some of my stuff for some reason was automatically shows up on the phone drive when its hooked up even though it was stuffed that was always on my sd card. now they don't show up on my sd card so i'm assuming its on the phone drive. is there a way to access this drive again without going through the settings, usb/connect usb way? like i said i can't see anything on my screen...its completely blacked out. thanks in advance
Phone's internal memory is mapped to /sdcard, so click "Phone" to get anything off of there. "Card" is mapped to /sdcard/external_sd (your MicroSD card if inserted). If you're not sure you can always drop into adb and check for the files - this doesn't require the display (assuming you had USB debugging enabled before the drop.)
Hope this helps!

If you were getting Phone/Card then that should mean you were running off of ICS, which also means the USB connection ran in MTP mode instead of USB mass storage. Short of physical damage (beyond the screen) it should recognize and allow you to pull files.
Do you get anything when you plug it in to the USB port?

sooo, how are we supposed to transfer files? I finally have my phone working "the way it's supposed to" so the PC sees it and it shows up as an MTP device. I can open and delete files on it, but whenever I try to transfer files, it just says copying... and stays there indefinitely...
i've been having to email myself things, or remove the sd card, put things on it, then copy/paste to the internal card...what the heck does Samsung really want us to do?
i need some help with this please...

I feel ya. I HATE mtp with a passion. That being said, the indefinite copying could be the result of a bad cable and/or a crappy computer.(seen both) my recommendation, fu*k mtp and just push everything with adb. that's what I do. If ur unfamiliar with adb get something like android commander or QTADB. Way less of a headache for me

i just tried with the stock samsung cable, this time got a message saying the device wasn't responding or was disconnected, and the copying stayed there as well.
to the poster who said it's about a crappy computer, that's not very good logic. I can transfer file between my tablets, other phones, portable hard drives, etc. I can play the latest games, use very intensive programs just fine. i just can't seem to transfer via MTP. ****ty computer, or ****ty transfer protocol? i think the latter.
Make sure you have the right driver installed. Here is a link to install it manually if need be.
I had that problem then I enabled usb debugging now my pc recognizes it as a mass storage device and transfers files flawlessly. I would try that.
My PC wont install the drivers. Im pretty much completely SOL. Ive tried multiple cables.

The stock cable is terrible. It's a Samsung tradition. I'd rule out that as the problem by using a quality one.

You have to uninstall old drivers first and reboot then plug phone in. Also if you have wifi then you can transfer files back and forth without a cable ot mtp.
