Evening all!! I've had my GN2 for a while now and have read about rooting and now want to take the plunge and go ahead.. BUT... would like an easy step by step guide into it. I previously had an iSheep phone and jail broke it and now feel it's time to root this. Please help..

you should check Note 2 Toolkit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923956
it can easily root phone step by step.
I will check it out. I read about resetting somekind of binary clock. Is this included as well?

The is actually an apk file that you can download and do it straight from the device. Give me a few to find the link.

Thanks. It's not quite what I'm looking for though. I want to be able to install either CleanRom or Jedi X Rom.
after you root with what he posted then go to play store and download goomanager.after that open it and click menu button, then click install open recovery script, wait for it to finish then you can reboot to recovery.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
What does that do?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
Once into recovery you can flash a ROM. Download the ROM to your ext sd card.

Didn't like the video, it was confusing at times, but the step by step guide couldn't have been easier.

Not a problem, I get tons of help here, so I like being able to return the favor.
It's a very easy root, takes less than five minutes start to finish.

Got a link to that app? I can't find it in the play store.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
I agree with slicingtaco, find the Exynosabuse.apk from Chainfire here on XDA and install it. You will be able to do this right from your SGN2. After rooting, get goomanager from the play store. open goomanager and in the menu choose 'Install OpenRecoveryScript'. That will download and install TWRP which will overwrite the stock recovery, which, after all of this you can install custom ROMS.
Right after rooting, you may have to get BusyBox Free from the playstore and install busybox.
Good Luck!

I'm going to root from my Mac first because I have heard the .apk has some bugs that aren't a big deal but are just annoying. Thanks for all the help though.

Didn't get a chance to root tonight. Had to go to a family dinner at my cousins house. Maybe tomorrow I'll have time.

Might not root. I've been doing some reading and for someone as new to Android as me it just seems to risky and not enough benefit.

I just came over from iPhone, but I always jailbroke my phones there. This is much easier to do. It sounds more daunting than it actually is, if you follow the site I provided you will be done in under five minutes with your macbook.
Rooted or not, this phone is incredible. Enjoy!

All that you have to do is use the search button here on XDA or Google it....But since it looks like you are a newer member of XDA, I will try to help you out. Here on XDA, you can find an answer to just about any question you can think of by using search. If you go to the development section of your phone make, there should be a thread on how to root and add roms to your device. I also like the galaxys3root.com website for video tutorials and rom reviews. Also YouTube has a lot of videos. Just make sure that the rooting method is for your specific phone/carrier or you could do bad things to your expensive phone. That goes for any type of modding you do. Take your time with each step of rooting and you will be fine. It's easier than it looks. Hope this helps. Any questions, just message me.
There are so many threads started for this exact question. So obviously you have done no reading and shouldn't touch your phone until you do. This is how we get the "OMG I BRICKED MY PHONE HELLLPPPP" threads.

perfect ill try this... dont know how i missed that thread.
Also if you root using that, do you pull out battery than go into recovery straight? Just do not allow the phone to reboot, what I always do. The one time i forgot that message It was not enjoyable lol
I don't recall pulling the battery either time I did it, I just followed the instructions as written and both times were fine.

Read, read, read and search and then search again and read again and you will be just fine
Thank you very very much!!!

I really was not trying to come off rude, if I did I do appologize. For you to really be able to do it and do it right you need to read up in the threads, I know there are a lot of pages but you will find a lot of information about things that worked and did not work.
If you did not do the update when you got your phone go to the motochopper root thread in the general section and follow the instructions. I have been rooting phone for about 4 yrs, since the G1 was released and I never decided to even join XDA until about a year later. I did all on my own by just reading and searching the forums.
Again was not trying to be rude, just passing on how I did it and most of the people here also did it.
Use the motochop method if you didnt update your device to MDL. Its super easy and fast.

Thanks guys I got it rooted I appreciate your help.

Please read up on rooting before you actually root it. You could brick your device and If you're a noob it will be hard to recover it.

Soft brick ? Hard brick? Doors your other device support Samsung kies? You can always get it into download or recover mode through that..one of those.
Sent from my SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app
Yup, what kind of brick do you mean? Soft brick or hard brick?
Let me know what you can and cannot do with your bricked phone. The more details the better because that will help determine exactly what the issue is with your phone.
And how did you brick it? Were you using Odin? Flashed a ROM/Kernal from the Recovery?
If you used Odin, I'd like you to recall what Odin said if you can.
Like I said, every detail will help
Soft brick iv been told to use odin but cant find origanal software for phone
