[Q] S2X doesn't start - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hi, I have a SGH-T989D. Today, I edited build.prop to change phone model to S3 (SGH-I747M), in order to watch mobile TV (long story). However, when tried to reboot device, it doesn't start (actually screen just shows logo for a while, and turns to blank). I also have tried to take battery off and turned it again, but it is same situations over and over. Did I brick the phone? Please help. Many thanks!

No it's not bricked try wiping cache and dalvik then reboot. Else flash backup if you have one.

Thank you! But, my phone doesn't turn on. Can I still be able to do "wiping cache and dalvik"?

As long as you can make it to the logo you can restart it. Do you have cwm or twrp recovery? If not do know how to get into download mode? What you did is soft bricked your phone. It can be fixed though.

Hi, did "Wipe catch/Dalvik catch", but device still doesn't boot. My phone is running stock ROM, but just rooted. I didn't "back-up" when I rooted the phone. Any further solution? Many thanks!

Try this web site galaxys2root.com and look for how to unroot unbrick and follow the instructions.
Hope this help

Hi,
The easiest way to fix it is reinstall firmware using odin. Remember after this you need to root the phone again (that's easy)
Download the firmware specific for your device from samMobile. http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3
Flash it using odin. You can find information on how to use odin here on XDA. Just Search for it.
After flashing is done set up the phone and root it again.

Install drivers for phone to computer. Install odin. Then turn on phone power button in and both volume up and down at same time until download mode appears on screen select yes to enter download mode . Hook phone to computer via usb cord. Open odin you should see com7 or whatever port you have it hooked in. Download any sgh-t989 odin zip. Some are gb some are ics etc. Extract the tar file to computer then place it to PDA in odin. Hit start odin should read tar and begin process of installing it to phone. You should see the progress in the top box on left. It should take 5-8 mins approx. Then phone will reboot into new rom. After this unplug phone you should be good to go.

Thanks all! Will try it when I get time.

Finally, I brought my phone back. Appreciated all of you help. Now, one more question, if someone can help me out as well: what it is the safe way to modify phone model on build.prop file? I used "ES File Explorer", and ended up with above situation. I just changed ro.product.model. Thanks.

PLEASE HELP possibly soft bricked

I accidently wipe my phones internal storage including backups, Im running latest TWRP and it wont read my sd card. I have a custom rom on the sd card but i cant access via recovery. phone boots to recovery and even download mode but i dont think my usb debug is checked and i cant get thru with odin. Im crunched for time as my wife is coming home in an hour and she will be furious if i bricked my phone i need help restoring before she gets home. thanks.
Heres how I fixed the problem, it was easy after doing but confusing getting there. Since the phone would not boot past the galaxy s3 screen there was no way for me to select USB debugging. That option totally did not allow me to use the Galaxy S3 toolkit listed in android development nor could I select and run any of their lists of "Root" roms because something would happen where ODIN didnt boot it correctly. It ran it at first then "Boot" came on then "Reset" came on then "Pass" came on but nothing ever took. I went to samsung-updates.com selected the ICS factory rom and saved it to desktop. Then I unzipped that rom to unveil the TAR file and flash that via Odin and Bam it ran thru no problems. The problems I ran into earlier were links from other posts and it turned out they were either bad links or not for the phone. I actually tried one guys download link that claimed to be specifically for the T999 us version and it turned out to be for another phone all together Im just lucky that flash didnt brick my device even more. Anyways Odin was my friend it was just a matter of downloading the "Correct" rom. thanks to all that helped I appreciated you all taking the time to answer.
I would download this tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746682. You should be able to use your PC to flash your Nandroid, although i have never done that.
It doesn't matter if USB debugging is checked if the phone is off.
when i boot to recovery it boots to manual mode anyone know what to do next?
You can flash stuff from your computer in download mode through Odin. I hate doing it myself, but will try to look it up for you

Boot to Recovery and reset factory defaults. That will fix it. It will still "stick" on that screen, but after a couple minutes, it will continue.

I booted to recovery did a factory reset but it still stayed on the samsung galaxy s3 screen for over fifteen minutes now. I even tried the rom toolbox someone suggested earlier but upon flashing a stock rom it prompts me to check usb debugging and I cant get past that screen.
Stock kernel! That should do the trick! Can't believe I forgot about that. Try that and it will boot up fine.

I was running paranoid android prior to this mess and yes your probably right about the kernel but I have downloaded from samsung-updates.com the ics kernel patch but its in a zip folder so i DL winzip to extract it but that doesnt seem to work either. IS there a stock rom download with a kernel i can download and use with odin?

Found a rom and a kernel in the development section and ran it thru odin and it still didnt take. I noticed that the rom flash thru odin only took about two minutes and not once did i see where the modem cycle was being applied. Still no luck for me. Since my phone does not boot pass the galaxy s3 screen is it possible to get the phone to mount via usb cable and copy the roms to internal storage and install via recovery?
Finally got it working again. Thanks to all that helped.

[Q] Possible bricking. Recovery methods and alternatives?

Much like the others here I rooted my T-mobile galaxy s3. The root worked fine and all. Then I downloaded this font changer app (I forget the name but it required a root) I go on to select a font then I go on to reboot like it said. Then bam, my phone gets stuck on the samsung screen. I then proceeded to use odin to put the stock image back on it (I think that's what it's called) It went through. I also did the factory wipe via the recovery screen. But now my phone would turn on, show "Samsung Galaxy S3," go to a black screen, play the t-mobile jingle, and the only thing that happens is the LED flashes but still nothing on the screen. I've tried virtually everything and I still think there is something else I need to do.
Help please?
I had a similar problem, this is what I did. Try and boot into cwr by hilding the vol up +power+home when it vibrates let go. Now u should b in cwr. Now wipe everything, dalvic, factory wipe fix permission. And flash a new rom cm10 will do..

The problem is that he may be rooted but doesn't have cwm recovery.
If that's the case then you need to flash cwm recovery first.
I would also try flashing stock rom again or after flashing cwr download nandroid backup of stock rom.
Good luck and let us know if that worked

That sounds like a reasonable solution. Can I get a link to the CWM recovery file as well as a guide to it so I don't dig myself into a deeper hole? lol
Actually if you're stock recovery, factory reset should wipe everything. Including internal sd, just so you know.
If that doesn't work it'd probably be cleaner to just odin the root66 fw. But if you prefer the other way, you can find recovery files at the top of post 2 in the fw thread. Root66 is at the top of post 1.
I still need to add a few recoveries so if you don't see one you want let me know.

Hey guys,
Was trying to root my stock T-Mobile Galaxy S3, and everything was going fine but after it rebooted from Odin, the screen stayed black, and only the blue LED was pulsing. I assume it has something to do with my phone being on 4.1.1 and the S3 toolkit not liking that. I tried to flash the stock Rom to get it out of this, but now the same thing is still happening. I have tried multiple cache wipes/factory resets and multiple other stock ROMs. I always without fail get the same thing Samsung splash screen/Blue pulsing LED/start up sound and black screen. I'm getting really frustrated and worried. Can anyone help?

That's actually the exact problem I just solved. You would need Odin 3.04 (well that's what I used) and you need to flash root66 like one of the previous posters here said. It recovered my phone AND rooted it. So try that and tell us what happened.

When I try the root66 it fails in odin. I used the root66_TMO_T999UVDLJA one. First, I had toolkit convert it into a .tar. Then I chose option 8 to flash a stock rom. I skipped ahead to flashing the rom and factory reset like it prompted. Then I tried to flash the .tar and it fails. ..:/. I don't know what else to do.

Actualy I don't use toolkit so I might be wrong, but I don't think you need to convert root66 to tar. Just skip the toolkit. Put your phone into download mode, open odin, connect your phone to pc and flash root66. Check root66 thread for some info about unziping it or converting to anything. All info should be in op. If there is nothing about it then flash it as it is. Make sure that you have phone drivers installed and turn off kies.
I hope it helps.

Did the same thing
I did the same thing. I used the toolkit and was distracted by my son which ended up in me skipping over areas I thought I read and missed the part about JellyBean creating soft-brick.. It did install CWM though . Low and behold, I soft-bricked my phone with the pulsing blue LED from HELL. I kept having issues flashing everything, luckily the toolkit DID install CWM for me which was of no help. When I used Odin 3.0.4 it worked flawlessly with the stock rooted t999 rom which I have attached along with Odin 3.0.4.
Here is how to fix your soft-brick with the black screen and blue LED from hell:
1.) Download files attached and EXTRACT > root66_TMO_T999UVDLJA.7z AND Odin_3.0.4_Files.zip
2.) Boot into download updates screen by pressing and holding Home Button, Volume Down Button, and Power Button at same time until you boot into downloading updates screen.
3.) Plug in your phone to your pc
4.) Open Odin 3.0.4 make sure Auto Reboot and F . Reset Time are checked
5.) Click the PDA button at the right, select boot-stock-tmobile-sgh-t999
7.) Click the START button.
8.) Repeat Steps 2-4
9.) Click the PDA button at the right, select root66_TMO_T999UVDLJA.tar.md5
10.) Click the START button and you should see it install things you never saw before like BOOT, SYSTEM, MODEM, etc. (not in that order) at the top left where it shows installation progress (that little green rectangle)

N7105t wont boot

Hi, new here and new to Android. My mate convinced me to jump ship from iPhone and get a Note II and I love it. The best phone I have ever had. But now I am way above my head here. I gained root with Chainfires CF Auto Root and installed mobile Odin. Installed a version of Aroma Rom found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2093080
I installed everything and worked perfect but I didn't like the moto theme i installed within it so went back to mobile Odin to go through the process again but this time it is stuck at the loading screen. Gets passed the GT-N7105T screen and goes to the ANDROID load screen, but does nothing else.
I initially backed up my EFS but forgot to do the Nandroid. Really need help... Thanks in advance.
Is there any way I can do a restore or anything? I can get to the Vol Up, home, power and vol down, home, power menus. Go to work in about 1 hour so fingers crossed I can get some ideas at the end of my shift.

Is it possible to gain root access with cwm and flash another rom? Can't seem to do it from recovery mode with cf auto root.
There is a thread which have pre rooted stock roms but flashable via odin only. Correct me if im wrong. Try downloadbany of the chefs rom for yur model. Usually it comes rooted. Try n see if that helps. Other than that try repartition yur phone using pit file

Hi,
My guess is the ROM got stuffed somehow.
If you can get in to cwm recovery, try doing a full wipe and flashing a new ROM.
If u can't get in to cwn, download a stock rom for your model, from WWW.sammobile.com
Install Odin on your PC (it should come in the zip that the ROM came in)
Then boot your phone in to download mode (home button + volume down + power button )
Plug your phone in to PC
Open Odin, you should see a blue box showing your phones connected.
Now depending upon if the ROM is single or 3 file, u will need to do one of the following:
If its single file, select the PDA tab in Odin, and select the ROM u downloaded. Then click start.
If its 3 file, click on the tabs PDA, PHONE, CSC, and select the corresponding files with the same name.
Then click start.
The may also be a pit file in the ROM tar file, don't flash that. As it can cause a hard brick.
If what I said doesn't work, let me know, and the is a few other things u can try.
Cheers

Ah thanks so much guys. This is the exact info I have been searching for. I know its all been asked before, but trying to sift through the thousands of threads with thousands of posts is so frustrating when you can't find the answers. I have spent the last week researching and finally flashing a rom, then this happens. I thought my phone was a gonner!
Will give this a shot now. Fingers crossed.
Cant believe i didn't try this earlier. doing a firmware recovery through KIES and seems to be working so far.
Good to hear that. Just do a nandroid back up nxt time u flash anything just incase things like this goes wrong

Hi just wondering if someone could kindly shed some light on how to make a Full Nandroid backup of Samsung Galaxy Note II (N7105T) using Vodafone Australia Mobile Service. I have already rooted my phone using exynosabuse method from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032849 and I'm thinking of flashing the #hashcheck# rom from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2093080. Thanks in advance for your response...
To make nandroid backup you First need to flash advanced recovery (cwm/TWRP)
After this you will have option to backup in recovery menu.

I have just installed ROM Manager v5.5.1.7 but when I try to flash ClockworkMod Recovery it says Unsupported device (Galaxy Note N7105T android base 4.1.1 DVALK3). However there is support for Galaxy Note N7105 but i just don't know whether this will work on my phone model (N7105T). Are there any other alternative methods available or has anyone here been able to backup the above phone model? Thanks in advance for your response

Hi,
I am pretty sure the n7105t and n7105 are the same, but just have different SARS values (work on different networks and need different rils and modems).
If that is the case, you could just download build prop editor from the android market, or just use a text editor, and change the device ID to n7105.
Then you could flash the recovery from ROM manager.
I used to have a galaxy s2 that was the T variant, and the only difference on that from the standard model was the sar values.
Alternatively you can just download a .tar recovery, and flash it thru Odin.
Cheers

Is this hard brick or soft?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. If it's bricked then it almost definitely is a soft brick. A hard brick is when the phone does not turn on at all and I believe when plugged into the charger there are no led lights or anything. In order to get rid of the soft brick you could try to use Odin to flash a JB tar. There's a guide to do that somewhere in here. I posted one myself on a different thread not too long ago so you could search by my name to find it.

If you're stuck in Odin Mode, you should be able to flash a stock rom via Odin on your computer. Flash the stock LJ7 jellybean and don't mess with the count reset versions.

Even if you pull battery and press the 3 button combo you still can't get into recovery?

This specifically... Have you tried another USB port? Have you tried another cable?
If you can't get anything else to work, this might be an actual brick.
What were you updating?
What were you running? Recovery, ROM, Modem?

first confirm if the odin tar you are flashing has correct MD5 , i mean it got corrupt while downloading ( it happens a lot )
use a different , preferably new stock cable
use different usb port ( the com port should show up in odin window too )
if everything is fine flash the tar once more.

And if possible, try a different computer (my desktop recognizes my phone fine, but my laptop only recognizes it in Linux)

This is perfect I need someone to test to confirm this will work on this error.
Grab cf-autoroot
Flash it in Odin and let it do its auto reboot, after it will probably hang at the sgs3 splash.
Pull battery
Reboot to stock recovery
Wipe data factory reset
Wipe cache
Try reboot
If reboot passes boot animation let it sit for about 10-15minutes before pulling battery(it may boot into rom at this point)
If it hangs at the sgs3 splash screen on reboot, pull battery boot to DL mode and flash an Odin one-click full restore.
Reboot
Hopefully profit like I did.

In which stage of Odin does it get stuck?
I had an epic 4g which died that way, it just got stuck on flashing modem every time, tried everything, but it was just dead.
But I hope it's not your case
Good luck

same things goes wrong with me it doesn't go in download mode........help hoe to get into download mode
Hello alltogether,
The last 30 minutes I was near a heart attack, I really thought my S3 would be 90% dead.
NO recovery - The "encounter an issue...." warning - Only ODIN
But everytime I tried to flash anything (stock ROM or Recovery or whatever) it just stopped after a few seconds and ODIN freezed I had to pull the USB cable to do something new. I even let it without battery for a few minutes - nothing changed.
I was really dissapointed and I searched the Internet - after all I found the hint to try antother USB port and another cable.
I used a thin old cable and the front usb, not the back usb port.
So now ODIN, the original cable and the back USB port - I really didn't think it would make a difference! I tried to flash CF-Root with CWM and...
TATAAAAA! IT WORKED.
Man I am happy.
There's nothing more worse than not coming into recovery mode and odin not working!
BTW: Why it came how it came: I had (and still have) Omega 4.2.1 and Philz Touch Recovery, but I had problems with the root access to the system. I wanted to flash CF-CWM Root - That's all, this brought me in big trouble.
I never had these problems with the CF Root, I don't know why, but I do not really trust this Philz Touch Recovery, maybe I am hyper sensible now - I do not know.
I am happy, my phone is happy - everything is fine.
