I apologize for asking simple questions, but I have been researching for months and I need a more simplified, direct explanation of procedures. I have a Sprint Htc evo 4G, rooted, hboot 2.18.0001, s-on. I would like to install the Mazwoz rom. Could someone give me the steps in simple idiots terms? Do I need to backup all data first? If so, what software should I use? Do I need to update kernel as well? Can I restore my data / apps after upgrade?
I appreciate any help. I have found several guides that have like 5 steps but are written for people who know what to do or have done it before
Thanks in advance

Well, i recently bought a desire hd(shifted from windows mobile), well i am rather scared to brick my device, so i would really appreciate if someone could direct me into the correct path of flashing my phone with cyanogen's Roms, at the moment, i have done reading, but i still have doubts and i cant really digest all the information given out there in certain threads, so please do help me! Thank You.
I would follow the Cyanogenmod wiki for completeness, this will taje you by the hand from stock to CM goodness
well, thank you, but i have a question, i have already rooted my phone using visionary, so i must i still root it using the method in the wiki?
That CM method is manual, and very complicated compared to the methods in this forum. You do not need to root using RATC when you have Visionary.
Ok, so yeah I have rooted with visionary, so in the wiki it mention that installing engineering hboot isn't necessary. So should I skip that step? Do I need to flash a new radio in order to flash cynogen mod? I am sorry for asking ridiculous questions. But I am rather worried to brick my beauty.

I personally would recommend flashing the hboot and also Radio S-OFF'ing, and I would recommend flashing the latest radio as it seems to improve battery life.
The reason I recommend the manual CM method is not every one has access to windows machines which many of the one click tools require,.
confusing, i am sorry, really and truly am, i am a noob with 0 knowledge on this, but i have flashed around with windows mobile though, please do help me, just guide me, small baby steps would do, spare me some of you time. Please and thank you,.
hi been reading up about rooting my dhd
2.2.1
2.6.32.21-g1e30168
1.75.161.2 cl301245
as i said been browsing but read that many different infos brain is about dead now
do i need to make goldcard and downgrade prior to rooting or can it be done on this version.
sorry for asking what is a silly question to most but am new to andriod and only just got dhd its vodafone btw not shaw if this makes a difference.
thanks in advance for any help.
p s dont want to brick my phone are the odds high when rooting.
sorry think ive posted this in the wrong place could mods please move to correct one pls
Yes you will need to downgrade in order to root here is a link to the guide to downgrade follow it and you will be able to root
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003&highlight=downgrade
There are risks to rooting as always however if you follow the guides on XDA you shouldn't have any issues.
thanks
when downgrading do i loose any thing important on my phone not contacts etc but other stuff
No you do not loose anything your contact etc are backed up through Google, if you are going to try a custom ROM I recommend LeeDroid's Its very stable and fast with extremely good battery life.
I have read multiple guides around the internet about rooting my HTC Desire Z. Hutchinson 3UK network. I am unsure on what method to use, how to downgrade etc.
I do not want to run a risk of rooting my phone as I bought it outright for £300. I also want to know if I can unroot and perm-root.
The reason I want to root is to overclock it, is it possile to use 2.2 firmware on a root?
Could you please post or link a guide that will provide all of the information I need and that is fairly simple to understand as I am new to the whole Android/rooting business.
Many thanks.
My Android version is 2.2.1 and am hoping to use this version as I love sense but only want a root on this to overclock.
My baseband version is 12.28e.60.140fU_26.04.02.17_M2
Build number and software number is 1.72.405.2
With a 1.72 ROM you will need to downgrade before you can Root.
The instructions in the Wiki (http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Introduction) include links to the downgrade instructions.
The recommended root method uses GFREE which will SIM-Unlock the phone while you are rooting.
Yes you can unroot, the instructions for that are in the Wiki as well.
You can absolutely use a 2.2 ROM while rooted, if you are only looking to overclock you can just install an overclock friendly kernel after you are rooted, though you may want to look at a custom ROM because you will have to wipe when you downgrade from 1.72.
Good luck!
Ok, is unrooting a simple process because I am covered on warranty and do not to want to simply lose it, I need a backup. My phone is already unlocked so that is fine there.
How long does the rooting take? Because it all looks very confusing entering the code etc, am I likely to mess anything up which results in a brick?

The process of rooting via wiki method took me about 15 minutes, but the setup of adb and installing drivers will add additional time if you are unfamiliar with it. Usually if you enter in a wrong character in adb, the command won't go through (incorrect paths, etc), but just be careful and you will be fine. Read each step carefully.
Unrooting was a little difficult for me (I did this first to send my first G2 in for warranty) as that was my first experience tying my phone to the pc, but it is very simple and straightforward with the instructions.
Yeah i did rooting with the wiki but sometimes you'll get confused on how to do it. If u dont understand ask here or search the internet. Always happy to help ^_^!
Downgrading
It says check your INFOCID. How do I perform this check?
Sorry for not knowing anything..
the link I am asking about is provided by the wiki: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
Would lie to root my phone but i am scared! I've seen and read so many tutorials that my mind is full. It seems using unrevoked method is the easiest? I've had my desire nearly twelve months and use launcher pro.
Is it full proof (even for a dummy?)
After it is rooted how do i put the roms on?
Will i loose all the apps i have installed?
I suppose i'm only doing it to:
1: Get it running 2.3
2: Get rid of the low space warning.
Any info muchly appreciated.
Thanks Neil

Neil,
Unrevoked is a very easy process on the whole as long as you follow the instructions to the letter. Once you are rooted, go download Rom Manager from the market and you can use that to select many roms to download and install from directly inside that app.
You will want to get Titanium Backup and use this to ensure you backup all of your apps and their data. Once last thing, if you use Rom Manager, when it offers to do a nandroid backup before installing a new rom, ACCEPT THE OFFER.
If there is one thing you can never do too much it is a nandroid backup!
Good luck

That number is the baseband (the radio) and not the rom. What software version does your rom say at present and is it a branded rom? What network are you on also?

You need the serial number from under the battery.
I understand that you must have read a thousand different tutorials on rooting and you are likely more confused than when you started out. I was the same...I read so much, I scared myself stupid! Without wantiong to load you with more info, I found these instructions http://www.t-mod.org/?page_id=11 to be very easy to follow and understand.
The site is actually Australian and the ROMs they link to have been modified for Australian use, but when you are instructed to download a ROM for use, just find one here and continue with the instructions. I recommend you start with something like this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038195 as it will require no special tricks to get working, as some other ROMs do. Once you have the idea, you can then flash whatever you like.
Above all, take your time. Set yourself a couple hours to do the procedure and follow each step carefully. Once you are done, you will be amazed how simple it really was
Software number is 2.25.771.1 I'm on 3 UK.
God knows why i wrote the other number in!
The serial number is HT07TPLO2916.
777Ace. That looks a more comlicate method than this one?:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
Mmmm, not sure. It really comes down to what you are comfortable with. I found the other site simple to understand, but I will admit I got pretty confused about using a USB stick to boot alpharev...the guy in your link uses a CD, which is a much simpler method imo.
But as I say, if it's easier for you to understand, by all means go that way...just remember to take your time and all will be well
Do I need that ruu rom and can anyone link me to the correct one to download?

I think you need an hour just reading the guides....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
If you still have question come back
Just go to htc.com > Support > ROM upgrade for HTC Desire (your Tel-co).
You really only need that RUU as a safety net in case something gets ballsed up and you need to restore to stock, but also handy if you do not have the 0.93 HBoot. Just run the upgrade before you start anything and the HBoot will update for you.
Hey guys, what's up? so, here's the deal, im a total noob, and i have done some extensive reading on rooting, flashing, adb, etc, but of course, doubts and questions arise.
I already have adb installed, read the basic guides to using it, so i dont i should have a problem with that...
My question is about rooting (with so many different guides out there, it becomes a bit confusing...)
Q: Is it necessary to use Engineering HBoot? or is it safe to skip this one?
What is it needed for exactly?
and one more question, could anyone guide me to a good, noob friendy guide on unrooting/returning everything to "new"?
Thanks guys!

Engineering hboot isn't required but its recommended as it has more system recovery commands available to it; the guide in the wiki (http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD) takes you through the recommended root process and also has a guide for returning to stock.
While it looks hard, its quite simple; just be sure to double check the commands before issuing them and be sure to check the md5sums of all the downloads

If you're not sure about it, then skip the eng hboot bit for now. It's one less thing to do and it's entirely optional (though can be useful).
You can always do the eng hboot later if you want.
