Do you like? The switch from touchwiz based roms to AOKP/CM - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

Who has switched? What has been your experience? Are there any features that you miss? Any apps you use in the place of others?

On every other phone I've owned I had always strived to always have aosp by the way of cyanogen or aokp..
With the note 2 I feel like I'd be loosing a ton of features..
I tried cm 10.1 a couple of days ago.. but I ended up going stock back.
I honestly like touch wiz in this device... which is something I thought I'd never in my life say, specially on the s1 epic or s2. I never flashed aosp on the s3 because I lost it and ended up having a different phone until I got th note. But aoso was awesome when I had the nexus because I always up to date, but I got bored very easily.
Just my 2 cents I guess.
Lol

Out of all of the AOSP roms out there paranoid Android is my favorite but I always end up back on a tw based rom simply because this phone specifically has features that will never be supported by cm/aosp based roms. This is the first phone that this has been the case. In my opinion Samsung went above and beyond with this device.

If you want a new shell just grab Apex, or Nova, any of the other launcher alternatives out there. You get your new GUI, and you keep most all the features like SPen.

Agreed, I see no need for AOSP as we have all of the features of AOSP right now plus the extra TW features. I use go launcher because I don't like a few things about TW launcher but everything remains in tact. Now, the story will likely change for many of us when Android goes to 4.2 and beyond and we don't get support from Samsung or at least "quick enough" support.

Yeah im sick of looking in task manager and seeing all the crap running even after i removed bloatware. Mfgs really screw up the android experience. Cant wait for a stock android based rom.
I personally like all the extras that touch wiz has added on THIS phone. Normally I would run pure stock but I'm happy with this phone out of the box. It helps that everything I don't need or use I can go in and disable and not worry about it running or using ram. I'm personally stock, not rooted and content. First phone ever that I didn't feel the need to root. Just my opinion.

Exactly, I already own Gnex and N7. I'm fully aware of what AOSP roms are capable of. No way I want any of those roms installed on my Note 2. I bought this because I wanted all those features that's tied into Spen. This phone would be very bad without the stock features. If I wanted stock experience, I would've waited for Nexus 4 or stayed with my Gnex. I've been rom hopping for last 2 years and now I just want something that's good enough.
I have to admit, it becomes like an addiction. I would be looking for new roms and rom updates constantly everyday.

There are cherrypicks you can do with AOKP right now that gives apparently full functionality to the S-Pen.

Naah I like the stock ROM and its features and stock Android will never have Wi-Fi calling which is something I must have with work so I'll never put it on this phone
Wifi calling is great but it's voice is a dinosaur.
I'm using the multi window rom and installed 4.2 Gapps.
Used the 4.2 launcher then switched to Go for the eye candy. Still maintain the S-pen while having 4.2 camera, gallery, ect AND sCal, sGallery and others.
Battery seems to be on par with stock Touchwiz, 40% after 15.5 hours, and 2.5hours screen time.
Still not sure how useful multi window is but I do agree Paranoid and the note2 were meant to be together.
first phone that im actually keeping stock!!! Phone runs smooth and with no problems.... aosp and aokp just seem.......pretty boring now. I do wish to have the nexus navigation on screen bar.
For the advanced users(we know who we are) AOSP will be great I can't wait. It's pointless now a days to not have AOSP it's best to start clean then add what you want free up all the space/ram and have the latest updates. I came from S3 and wanted the quad core, 5.5, and RGB s-pen can stay docked for all I care. When it comes it will be great!

New Rom Ideas

I have been battling back and forth between touchwiz roms and AOSP roms. . So if any developers are looking for a new rom to make, here is my idea (yes, i know it is not a new idea and has been done on many devices). What i would like to have is the stabilty and battery life of a UVDLJA rom including touchwiz launcher, with AOSP lockscreen, inverted AOSP contacts and messenger.I don't know if its possible, but could there be options for this using aroma in the touchwiz roms?
Something I saw while working in the s2 board with my wife's phone was a rom with a touchwhiz base and the aokp rom control features added, I personally would love something like that
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
TL;DR... I agree on the new rom idea lol. And I *****ed and moaned about the roms we have all in relativity are too damn close to each other. But I still respect their hard work, and praise them all as they are doing things I wish I could do.
I wish I had the knowledge and computer strong enough to do this kinda work, I would've had the rom up and running so long ago lol... I used my phone to get most of it working. building sounds and apps into a rom little things here and there just started to break I gave up.
This would be my ultimate DD never have to flash a rom again. I absolutely despise the "nature" that Samsung built in to this phone.
We have about 3 sounds mods everyone focuses on, some cameras and Keyboards people build into the rom, some awesome themes I'm extremely happy with. I would really like a TW rom with all AOSP sounds instead of the water drops and stuff. Camera from TW, LockScreen from AOSP, Notification and Status bar options from AOKP, 4.2 little things here and there as options.
Know I mean no disrespect and I do appreciate what our guys do in the Dev section.
I miss the devs that worked on those kinda things. We have great guys here (I might get [email protected] for this one) but in general they all seem to be adding the same things; Acid, Beats, Walkman music, removing other Samsung Apps while others keep them. They all leave bloat like LTETest, and LTEsettings in the /system/app folder. I could keep going and going. Know I mean no disrespect and I do appreciate them again. But where are the old roms like we used to get (mentioned above) we had some great stuff in the G2X also. We had roms that had custom lockscreens to launchers and all sorts of neat things I would've never expected. Maybe it's time I stop helping the stupids and save up and get a new computer with the power to build roms as well. (I won't release them to people though lol)
i know the exactly what you guys need

I am in the process of developing a ROM. Nothing solid yet. I really do agree with keeping the stability and features of stock with some aosp features. At least for me I'll be a start with dev work. I have a Mac so I've already downloaded xcode and working and following dxsidia as guide. It'll take me a while since I work 10 hour shifts at the hospital and also do some website dev on the side.

I'm glad to see people wanting to work on this. I believe it will make a great DD. It seems I'm one of the few that really like the touchwiz launcher and Widgets, but I ask you to please include that in the rom. People can easily download the other launchers from the market.
I agree, anything that is downloadable from the market should stay there. It's great that you can include something in a rom, but so can simply pressing the install button. Any thing that is already a flashable .zip (like beats) or (acId sounds mod) should stay as a flashable .zip. Just my opinion.
In the ATT galaxy S3 forums, there is a rom called nexusmod reloaded that is close to what I am referring to. Its based on ics and I don't think it has inverted apps that we like.

dude, you totally can.
easiest way, though, would be to disable your lockscreen and try out widget locker or something like that.
as far as the inverted apps go, i would hit up some of the guys in the themes and apps section. wouldn't take very long to whip something like that up... hell, even the lockscreen wouldn't take very long to modify.
why CM chooses to build from the source of another device is beyond me. it would be much easier to customize the layout/UI, parameters, and make it functional with the firmware meant for this thing, and you would keep all the functionality of TW.
anyways, yeah.
There is this great divide feeling as I've been playing with my new S3, and it really brings homage to the Linux scene (compare: xfce vs kde vs gnome, etc.).
Though I've settled on TouchWiz for now, there are some things I wish were an option and not "just the way it is".
I finally got kitchen working on my Mac. Got a base up and will hopefully be able to post it later. This is my plan since we be seen this throughout. People want stability of stock and those who love tw features will love this. I will be implementing aroma installer later when I get that injected. I've only built a ROM before for myself but never posted it. It'll be theme free and since it'll be stock most stock themes should work. I basically want people to do the work on their own. If they want to add volume mods like beats , they should flash it on their own . This is an experiment to get my foot out there and I'd love the support. Any name suggestions. ??

This is probably the first phone I wouldnt root if it wernt for the need to remove carrier IQ. I wish we had a temproot so I could get carrierIQ out and keep the phone stock . I <3 touchwiz. Way more polished than sense imho .
So conflicted atm... But... think will wait just a /bit/ longer for it to shake out.
Bah, who am I kidding, downloading now.
---------- Post added at 06:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:31 AM ----------
Known issues:
- The stylus doesn't work. Need to investigate.
- Radio crashes every now and then.
- Audio in phone calls requires an initiation phase: make 2 phone calls to any number when you boot up to get audio functional on the 3rd call.
Ah, perhaps I will wait that big longer.
I'll be running stock TW until I get tired of it, then I'll try some launchers and get tired of those. Thats when I'll flash a new ROM and Kernel.
I'm going to stick with TouchWiz so that my phone would be fully functional as it was meant to be. Also, TW has drastically gotten much better and I already like the feel of it. It's already fast and buttery smooth. And with my phone rooted I had it tweaked at 5x5 grid with scrolling wallpaper and a sweet ass theme.
I haven't rooted yet, in the past only did it to have full data access (tether) that I pay for, and delete bloat. But with new updates coming at some point I've been making due just fine so I'll wait until after the big update to decide if I'll root. As far as stock versus touchwiz lol now that's easy regardless to the screen size or how smooth it runs I couldn't imagine losing my pen that's how I enter text etc and once of my main reasons for buying, could have kept my S3 & yes 4.8 to 5.5 is different but let's be serious why get a note 2 only to root and put stock.........losing all the reasons to own a note two ........laughing out loud. And FINALLY you delete carrier IQ Lmao, ok fine but if you haven't noticed this won't stop big brother so your peace of mind is shot boots. Non existent
Sent from my SGH-T889 using Tapatalk 2
Besides the screen size, the S pen is the obvious stand out feature. Without all the S pen additions it'll be "just a big phone". I'm sticking with TW until I decide to completely give up on using the S pen.
I want to run stock but I'll probably wait awhile until all the spen goodies are rolled in. I don't use it that much, but I'd hate to lose it. My last experience with TW was the Vibrant. So far it hasn't been that bad. I'm running Nova Launcher.
The only function I use from stock is the pop up browser. I never use the pen unless I'm showing someone the gimmick of drawing with it. So yes. I'd love me some CM10.

I think your terms are misleading. To me, CM10 and AOKP aren't "Stock Android", they're "AOSP" or "Vanilla Android". Of course that's just semantics. "Stock" is the ROM that the phone shipped with. With that in mind....
I'll be running a rooted TouchWiz "stock" ROM, debloated (my idea of debloated), with Nova Launcher. I get the best of both worlds that way, in my opinion. All the goodies that Samsung has done to the phone that make it BETTER, in my opinion, than "AOSP", plus I can add the best of other ROMs. With Nova Launcher, I have the "look & feel" of "AOSP" as well.
YMMV.
By the way, why didn't you add an actual poll to the thread?
This phone + Paranoid Android is all I need. Most of samsungs apps are inferior to their aosp counter parts. The only thing I'll be losing out on is the s pen which I have never actually used in a useful way anyway. Samsung has great hardware but their software and design choices need improvement.
i'll be moving to cm10 once they sort out the calling/audio issue.. i bought this phone because it's a performance beast and the lovely screen.. the s-pen wasn't even a consideration in the purchase for me.. sure, it's a neat gimmick (pull out lightsaber sounds to amuse the kids) but i can't see myself using it for anything..
I'll be using it on touchwiz, since wifi calling is a must and multiview, while i'm really anticipating it, isn't a big enough reason for me to root just yet (I'm lazy and this phone is awesome even without root/custom ROMs). One day I will, but for now I'm just going to mess with the phone

4g works. Worth it for the themes in my opinion but battery life will take a dive. At least it did with me.

I've been running CM since the G1, as weird as it is, I don't think I will flash any AOSP ROMs. I'm very happy with TW + Whomp.
This is the 1st device I feel it doesn't need any custom roms. I'm not a fan of TW but this phone is a beast running rooted stock.

I tried custom roms on mine when I was looking to hack wifi tether into working, and figured the third party roms would be easier, but losing S-Memo was detrimental to my enjoyment of the phone.
It also seemed much buggier and unreliable in comparison to stock, no matter which rom I used. I ended up going back to stock, and the bugs that I'd experienced with stock seemed to go away too... Right at the moment I'm unrooted in an effort to try to download the update, but no dice so I'm suffering.
This is an intense difference from my last Samsung phone, the Epic 4g, which I rooted nearly the day I got it because it was so unusable. I almost refused to sell it without a third-party rom on it for fear of diminishing my Ebay reputation for selling ****ty products.
Overall a good phone, with great stock stability and software. I haven't had a force-close or crash since I reflashed stock.
Try it out. It won't kill ya

HAHAHAHHAHA - I know what you are saying. I keep checking like every couple hours to see if ANYTHING has been posted about AOSP.
I know we bought these phones WITH touchjizz on them, but I for one thought for SURE we would have CM or something by now, and NEVER thought that I would be stuck with TW...

Funny how people complain about a phone's stock UI, when they knew buying it, it came with it. I personally dont like TW, but I have removed most of it myself. Using custom launcher, Xposed and pretty soon I will load my own phone/contacts themed and TW is pretty much gone.
Its pretty simple to do all this yourself, even if you have 0 experience in doing so. As long as you can read and follow instructions, you will be fine.

YES! I really only bought this phone for the specs....
I have owned MANY Samsung phones in the past, and have ALWAYS used AOSP roms instead.
I know I bought this phone with TW on it, but since most Samsung phones get so much DEV support, I figured it wouldn't take long before we have CM....but it has taken longer then I thought it would.
Me too, I love Sammy phones and I used to not care much for their software. I did run some CM stuff on my N2, buy went back to TW as it was more stable and with the spen, I preferred to have TW software. I do like the theming options much better on CM, and of course the smaller ROMs.
I just think that in terms of usability, TW finally surpassed CM on the Note 2. Other than a quicker boot up and some more free space, TW was superior in my humble opinion.
I won't even flash CM out of curiosity on this phone. I don't feel like I'm missing anything, not to mention, I find the N3 to be a lot more temperamental than any other phone I've owned, so I'd imagine CM would only increase issues.

Keywords: light ROM, theme engine. I can make my phone look like whatever I please whenever I please. Granted most launchers come with themes but doesn't theme your whole phone. Roms really light makes phone run smoother, snappier, allows for more space for apps and stuff. Just my .02

You guys really hate TW that much? It's definitely grown on me over the years. I'm actually happy with it now, especially with this phone. I just hate all the bloat.

yup, i agree. CM & AOSP are awesome. ive flashed them on all my devices, but we loose alot of functionality by doing so. TW has grown on me quite a bit
Agreed, aosp/cm on any other phone is a must(really hate HTC sense, even more than tw) but you lose so much of what makes the note 3 unique when you flash aosp/cm on it. For some that's no big deal but for the rest of us that know how to debloat tw roms and set it up so it basically looks like aosp anyways, we're losing more than gaining anything. Especially since cm always has bugs that need to be worked out, when tw just work right from the start.
Like I said.. Every other phone I had that wasn't a note I longed to have aosp on it instant, now that I have one of the best phones (if not the best lol) I feel no urge at all to try aosp. For those that do that's cool too, with this phones specs and screen real estate it's like having your own super friggisweet Nexus device, with longer update processes.
