New to the T999 Coming from Galaxy nexus

Hey xda i'm new to the Samsung Galaxy S3 but not new to rooting/flashing roms.I'm coming from the Galaxy nexus and prior to that the GS2.I have a few concerns and need some advice..Is rooting completely safe? I've been reading up on people losing there imei's after flashing roms and also about the flash counter..I've never had to worry about that those before I seen there's fixes but i'm still a little skeptical...I cant afford to hard brick this gs3 I still have the Gnex which i will hold onto but my primary is the T999..Any advice would be appreciated thanks in advance..
Read and read is the best advice I can give you. There's ways to backup the IMEI in the dev section, and there is a way to root & flash w/o tripping flash counter.

i've been reading but im holding back from jumping the gun,I wanna understand a 100 percent first..I spent the whole weekend reading but im still confused about the Imei's stuff,it seems complicated..I know not to flash any roms for the other variant gs3 unless it states for t999.
I rooted and flashed my phone within the hour of getting it... anything that you have read is old news and/or user error. Follow guides and you'll be fine, I've flashed well over 50 times (nandroids, kernels, modem/radio and roms) switched recovery through terminal, all without issue at all.

Its safe to flash now. After rooting with Odin, just do a backup of your IMEI. These have been random, I personally have been flashing at least every other day with no problems.
If I remember correctly you don't even have to be rooted to back up your IMEI. So you can do that first if you are paranoid about it.
Also just to be safe use TWPR instead of CWM recovery. Many people reccomend it and I actually like it more!
Either way though, i say don't let what is a relatively small risk keep you from the joy that is rooting and flashing!!

That was the plan i cant stand TW especially coming from a pure android phone....Im familiar with Trinity Kernels i've used them on the gnex they're awesome.I'm gonna root as soon as I get home,I already ordered a zagg screen protector and ringke slim case i know protection is minimum but im more worried about scratches since i rarely drop my phone. Thanks for all the advice seems like we have great support for this device both from the devs and the users...

Hey man whats up i also had the gnex now the wife has it running aokp and trinity the gs3 is awesome i would first before anything back your imei up there is a way without root. Then after that throw twrp on there it also mounts and uses ext sdcard. I would back stock rom up. I would recommend freegs3 and trinity kernel especially with spice (colors) you know what i am talking about : p i feel that the stock rom with all its features kicks ass. So i use that and cm10 but find myself coming back to freegs3 it has all stock features theres an ics theme i use which is awesome and in freegs3 op. Also on top of that there is a working google now where everything works including voice. So everything just works killer theme . Google now and trinity.....its a win win. Oh also running nova launcher...edit if u do trip flash counter by using a different root method use Triangle away...its by chainfire and worked for me i had one on the counter now it is back to 0 or no flashes...anyways no worries dude just read up and be careful. Also if u are going to listen anyone else listen to mt3g very knowledgeable guy. Good dude
What does the flash counter do. Does it just void your warranty. I had the htc amaze before my gs3 and a g2x before that and I never even heard of flash counter before now.

Google it for a better answer but yes that's kinda what it does, it tracks how many times you've flashed something through recovery.

Yes if u go to do a return or warranty exchange i think mainly samsung checks for warranty exchanges or if they have to fix something on your device. But now if u just grab triangle away from market it will erase the counter back to stock....which is awesome . Happy flashing
Edit...if u flash something through recovery you are fine it only ticks the counter if u flash an image through odin.

Counter?

Well, I recently got the S3 is rooted running Xquizit v35. But my main question is what exactly is the counter?
is there any bad things if it gets too high? does it need to be reset?
Oh, and based on your opinion and experience what is the best ROM for us T-Mo S3 users out there?
The counter is for samsung to tell if you have ever modified your device. They do this for warranty purpose, if it is tripped then they will charge you. However Chainfire has an app out called Triangle away that will put your counter to zero.
There is no such as the BEST ROM...I recommend cm10 ...its a great noob ROM...its stable enough for daily use.
http://get.cm/?device=d2tmo
You can download it there...make sure you get the latest gapps because the ROM doesn't have them reinstalled

And I would disagree it a very un-noob rom, it has words they'd have to search "nightly" "milestone" "gapps" better option, stock ROM debloated, or stock ROM with root permission and learn what you can do from there.

If you've flashed you have to send Samsung $15 if you want to keep your warranty.
Well, I'm not a noob at android I know most about it. I'm just new to Samsung. I haven't tried CM10 since I'm mainly about battery life w/ a good performance. How's the battery life on CM10? And I guess I'll try to reset my counter with that app. Thanks guys!

FWIW my counter is at 15 right now. (See how worried I am about it)
Just download Triangle Away and run it when you want. After each flash, once a week, never. It all depends on how careless/ful you are when flashing and if you bork something so bad, it has to be returned for warranty.
Also best ROM threads are frowned upon bc they always turn into pissing contests.

Either run triangle away or boot into download mode. Both will show your flash counter.

Ok, so can't ask "best ROM", but, is everything working and stable in any particular version of CM10?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I see people talking about the warranty aspect of it, but I found out the hard way that having the counter not zeroed out affects the way some T-Mo and Samsung services work. Examples:
1) I was excited the AllShare Cast dongle for $50, got it all hooked up, then had this problem where every time the phone tried to hook up to the hub, it would just disconnect after a few seconds. After doing some reading, it was discovered that if your flash count reset back to zero (and binary showing as "official"), then the hub worked just fine. So I did the Triangle Away business, and bam. Worked like a charm.
2) There was a promotion a little while back where T-Mobile customers could view or download The Avengers movie from one of the bloatware apps I removed long ago. I don't remember all the details, but the download only worked once the counter and then the TV app data were both reset.
So there are real world reasons to go ahead and reset the flash counter back to zero. It just took me a little bit of time to figure this out myself. And now I'm passing the savings on to youuuuu!
Thanks for that! That's a heads up

Kernels

Morning guys.
Just rooted and using omega rom. So far so good, no issues.
Was considering updating my stock kernel, was after some advice on which one? As a new user.
Cheers

We're lucky because all the custom kernels are really good for Note 2.
Personally I usually use either Perseus or RedPill, but Note2Core and NEAK are great too.
Best thing to do it back-up in recovery, download each kernel, and then use each one for a few days to see which one works best for you :good:

I'm presuming (being new) I'd nandriod back up prior, and flash in the usual way?
Do the kernels have to be build number specific? Or do most generic versions work?

No probs
Yeah, Nandroid back-up via recovery first, then just flash like any other zip.
You do need to flash the kernel that corresponds to your phone model, yes. So if you have N7100 only flash N7100 kernels. If you have N7105 then only flash N7105 kernels. Should be obvious which is which in each thread though.

You can use them just how they come if you like, no harm in doing that.
If you've got some time to test the best settings for your cpu, you can play around with undervolting to CPU for slightly more battery savings, though I can't say whether or not you'll actually notice these savings in day to day use.

I used to dabble with this but I think it's now got to the point where the kernel devs do such a good job anyway that I don't feel the need to tinker anymore. For example, I get over 2.5 days from a single charge using Perseus, that's with light/moderate use and WiFi / mobile data always on.

Low volume

Hello everybody
Some of you might noticed that the volume in some apps (youtube, navigon...) or even media (mp3) is quite low.
This issue is fixed in many roms like cm, xylon and so on.
I want to know if there is any possibility to increase the volume output on 4.2.1 stock, without having root.
thx
Yeah I would like to know too. My iPod touch is a whole lot louder! What gives Google?
Would love to know this too. In fact, the low volume makes me miss quite a few calls and messages during the day when I'm not in the same room as my phone. Also when I show someone a YouTube video the audio is sometimes near impossible to hear on the speaker. Would love to stick with the stock ROM so I hope there is an easy fix.

Make sure you installed the V6beta2 if you are on 4.2 or 4.2.1. There are two different ones. One is for 4.1.2 which I think the latest build is called "V5Omega" it's in the 1st post and the other is for 4.2 and 4.2.1 which the latest build is called "V6beta2" and that's his 3rd post. Best of rooting on Note 2

So I just recently got a note 2. I had a Note I717. Did everything possible in rooting on that phone. Got a note 2 with insurance since Note 1 usb port got messed up. I wanna know what are the best ROM's and Apps and tweaks for the note 2 are. I've played with most roms on the note 1. My Favorite was Jellybam besides all the daily updates. I love the stock TW because of the battery performance. Amazing lasts for a long time. I am more of a cyanogenmod based OS. What's some good roms with customization and really good battery life like the stock TW. I'd appreciate all the suggestions

Jedi Master 13 with Saberkernel 23 is by far the best TW ROM for this phone (in my opinion). Jellybam is the best AOSP 4.2.2 ROM (in my opinion). Jellybam is banned from XDA though, you have to go to bam android to download the rom.

^^This! If you're so experienced flashing roms and such then you should know there is no best rom. You should also know how easy it is to read the OP in the rom that interests you. My note 1 was rooted and flashed and my usb port got messed up. I had no choice but to call my insurance and replace for a new. That's why I'm second thinking about rooting. Cause of anything happens to my phone I can just go get it swapped. But thanks for the rom suggest. I will look at it

I tried Jedi but a lot of things that WOULD, normally work wouldn't work for me(videos 4 one). So I moved on to something else!! What makes a Rom the best, because it best fits the person and their opinions, and there likes!! Not because everyone thinks it's the best. Or it has a bunch of pages in the thread.
If you want to look at something else, that most of the time everything just works out the box. Kinda like stock with a lil speed & flare.

Rules are rules.
Number 1 rule is to search before posting. There are many theads asking this same question, so why answer it? Keep your suggestions to yourself on telling me how to reply to posts. As you can see my post got three "thanks" yours got none. Thanks, have a good day.
The best ROM is the one you decide on yourself and love. No one can tell you what is best for you, for how you use your phone, for the colors and icons you like...you have to backup, read, flash a few and decide which is best for you. If you read the ROM threads you will see they are all the best for those that use them
