hello all
was wondering if anyone as seen this.
When the new update came out for the tmo galaxy s 3 I saw it and held off to make sure I could keep root and triangle away would still work.
in that time the update ready notification went away and has not shown back up.
If i go in and tell the phone to check for updates it just hangs there and gives me no error and no update.
anyway arround that as the update already downloaded previously but was just not yet installed.
I was thinking of just using keys but want to keep rootand don't know if that will have a different way of applying that may make me loose the ability to keep root.
I think it has something to do with the fact that your still rooted. Damage thing happened to me, after I unrooted it worked.

Damage thing? Darn though I still wanted to stay rooted. lol
Wonder if kies will still work ok or not.
Also does anyone know if triangle away works on the new version still?
I have heard mixed things.

Hey Peeps, quick question. Received a notice on my Verizon Incredible 2 today (8/14) saying that an update was coming through. It appeared forced, as there was way to fully cancel it. I was given the choice to defer it, but could only do so for 5 days. 2 questions:
1. Anyone know what this update is? Is Verizon forcing us to update to gb (2.3), or is it something else?
2. How do I permanently avoid the update? I've got no idea if I can choose to defer again after 5 days, and would much rather not have the update, if possible.
My DINC2 is rooted (using AlphaRevX, and the sweet patch packaged on the forums here). Any help would be much appreciated.
You can freeze or delete one of the main processes in charge of ota updates and device management. Com.Smithmicro.something.

Thanks much for the idea. It looks like the process was Com.Smithmicro.dm. I've frozen it with bloatfreezer, and will report back 5 days from now, as to what happens with it. To the positive, when I choose to "install deferred update" from the settings menu, nothing happens now. I'm going to take that as a good sign.
If you had accepted, clockwork would have blocked it.

Yikes! I chose to defer and I have a whole new problem now. When I turn my phone on I get about 5 to 10 seconds t before it says Shutting Down. Then it tries to update automatically. I get stuck on a droid screen with a blue droid, triangle & exclamation point. Remove battery. Repeat. I can still boot into recovery, any help?

If you can boot into recovery, try wiping your cache.
Thanks. I would try that but I decided to re flash the ROM and use titanium backup. So I got it frozen and all my apps restored. Thanks for the response, maybe I will restore and try that just so people can know for trouble shooting.
I just checked and no update. Ever since going to GB my phone has been super buggy. Clock, gmail, freezes, etc. No major problems before that. Hopefully this is a nice patch. Anyone else get an update?

I can confirm the same thing. blue triangle it try to auto update never even game me a conformation prompt to try and decline.
I was using the rmk gingersense debloated ( etc ) rom. Maybe it was just never disabled on that rom. Worst case just flash something else.
Hi everyone, I like many others updated to 2.3.3 and now I have a very buggy evo 4g. Problems such as speaker phone turning on ramdomly, screen wakes up for no reason and can't put it back to sleep, volume rocker no longer works when asleep, and other minor quarks. Question is should I take it to sprint and have them try to fix it before I try my first root ever, or simply proceed with the root and hope the issues go away after root? Thanks for the help.
My guess would be that it is hardware problems. But I would root it anyways and see if a custom ROM fixes your issues. Only knowledge can come from rooting your phone so try it out and If it doesn't work then unroot and grab a replacement. Nothin to lose really

Thanks but I thought you couldn't unroot 2.3.3 as.of yet? i could be wrong tho.
I say go ahead and root and flash the thing. My GF's Evo started acting wonky after the OTA updates so I was pretty sure that it wasn't a hardware issue. I rooted and flashed Synergy on her phone and it's been alot more stable with better battery life according to her.
ok if all else fails i guess i flash the stock rom, and go to sprint? though not fully unrooted i shouldnt have a problem right?
Yeah I guess they don't have an unroot option. As long as you flash a stock ROM and make it look stock 2.3.3, sprint shouldn't hassle you.

Thanks guys for all the feedback but today was an all time low for my evo. Every bug i mentioned occurred today plus some new ones such as screen unresponsive and phone turning off. I dont wanna take the chance of ending up with a buggy rooted evo that i cant get serviced because it cant be unrooted. I think the best is hope for sprint to give me a new phone, and root a new(refurbished most likely) evo. Thanks again.
Seems like everything you described is software related. Root it and flash a different rom and you will be good to go
My daughters att gs3 screen keeps turning on and off all the time all by itself. its all pure stock, NO root, stock rom still.
Data block on her line.
She doesnt have much installed in it and i dont want to reset it. is there anything i can install that will tell me what is causing it?
I know there is a better battery stats app. Not sure if it needs root? Imunsure it will help as its a bit confusing to read thru all the readings
Strangely mines did this for a day and it killed my battery. Hasn't happened since then though. Glad I wasn't going crazy. Mines is also stock no root or anything.

This is happening on my phone too, and when the screen turns on by itself it won't time out, have to manually lock it. Thought it was something to do with smart stay but mine is disabled. I flashed a custom rom yesterday and noticed it still happening. Carriers hardware support thinks it is a hardware issue and want me to rma my phone.

I think your only option is reseting the phone to make sure the phone doesnt have hardware issues. Try a fresh stock install from odin.

This never used to happen but in the last week has.
While using it, whether I'm in GoSMS Pro, or Chrome or even in the homescreen the screen will fade to black then back one to three times. It almost feels like proximity detection but there's absolutely no obstruction nor am I in a call.
Running 4.0.4 stock unrooted, latest update from Rogers.
Has anyone had this? Getting a bit worried!
Screen blacking out randomly
I'm also having this problem. I'm also on Rogers but I'm am rooted. I am however still using the stock rom. It all started happening after I did the latest update. Any help would be appreciated.

YES! Finally I'm not alone.
I was worried this was isolated. This confirms even more my suspicion it's a software not a hardware issue. The other reason why it would be so is because after it flashes off and on, the screen elements also do, which indicates the software is trying to refresh the display. If it were hardware it would likely not fade flash and nothing would change on the screen.
It sounds like the software update caused it as I noticed it started after installing it.
I ended up doing a hard reset yesterday after having had no responses. I am hoping it might help. I hate having to reinitialize so much crap while unrooted though. I was hoping to keep it stock and not worry about saving app data until Jelly Bean official stock is out. Oh well.
I also learned S Memo Samsung account syncing doesn't work. Good thing I made a Kies backup. Sigh...

Update: unfortunately the hard reset did not fix it. Problem has returned as of Sunday. I hope Jelly Bean comes soon. :S
In the meantime I'm talking with Rogers about this and pointing them to this thread.
Temporary solution found

I think I've solved it, but this may not be a solution for most people experiencing this (my friend also had this issue). In my case removing the game Modern War solved it.
I remember that after I installed it, the system started doing these flashes. It now has been behaving ok for 4 days since uninstalling it.
I don't think the game itself is the cause, but rather there could be some background task from it (it does occasionally push game event updates as notifications) that doesn't like the 4.0.4 update. In this case I can't quite identify what nor do I know how to diagnose it.
Just thought I'd update people in case they still have this issue. It may be one of your apps, essentially. It sucks and it shouldn't happen, but alas unless we test with a new stock OS update, we won't have much to eliminate it without removing the offending app.
S-off'd and rooted yesterday and was sitting here today and noticed the screen turned on by itself just lying on my desk.
I unlocked the phone and there was a SuperSU prompt want root permissions for the actual phone app itself.
Can anyone think of a reason it would need them? I didn't grant them and it eventually timed out and went away.
I do think a couple of apps may have started updating at the same time, so I didn't know if that triggered something with the phone app or not. I called the phone right after that and it rang and let me answer without any problem.
Thanks!
I had the same issue, as did some others. No idea why, but I just denied the permission & it never asked again. I'm not sure if anyone figured out a reason that it was happening, though.

I did notice the SuperSU app has a setting to automatically grant root to processes running as System I think. I thought that might be why it came up, but I also thought it would probably be a bad idea to set it somehow so I left it alone. I haven't seen it come back up again, so maybe it was a one time thing.
Thanks!
