[FIX] Chameleon Fix! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

Attention users!
Around our community, I have been seeing a lot of people having problems with the carrier / Chameleon error from switching between LJ1 / LJC / LK8 / MA5 roms.
This error happens when you boot your phone.
It starts the Hands Free Activation, and then the Chameleon Force Close happens.
With this flashable .zip, that will happen NO MORE!
This is an LJC Carrier Restore.
We have this awesome fix made by Garwynn (Tested by -EVil KoNCEPTz-) and it works like a charm.
Just flash this .zip file in TWRP or CWM and BOOM, Chameleon errors gone!
http://www.mediafire.com/?87k042cy13hb1yc
If you want more information on the fix or just want to look at the original posts, here are the original threads provided by Garwynn:
Original thread that (Garwynn) somewhat hijacked - sorry:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062499
Start around Post #60.
First fix post - moves both to LK8 version:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36115598&postcount=67
Second fix post - moves both back to LJC version:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36181746&postcount=103
All credit for this fix goes to Garwynn and his tester -EVil kONCEPTz- !
Thank you guys so much, Chameleon error was becoming a nuisance.

Isn't there a thread for this already?

All credit goes to Garwynn for this fix, permission was given.

I'm giving my blessing to this post as I hijacked another's thread for it.
Besides, my original posts attached them as ZIPs into the thread.
OP,
Please make sure to repost both ZIPs from the original thread if you're going to post.
Make sure they know which carrier build they will flash depending on ZIP.
Other than that you're good in my eyes.

Okay thanks, will update OP now.

EDITED out of respect for EK and G.
Nice of Garwynn to give his approval.
Thanks Garwynn and Evil K for that fix.
Thanks OP for the thread to direct ppl to with the issue.
Sent from my calculator watch.

Yea garwynn and I both gave the OK. I was intending to start a thread for it and, well you know, life got in the way and I forgot about it.
I like to break stuff!

As you probably know, I'm still fairly new to xda and developing.
What happened before was dumb on my part for not knowing rules and such, and users took it out of proportion seeing as things like that don't happen much here.
I've proceeded to apologize to the developer and he accepted my apology.
You have my word, whatever I post here on out with be official and regulated.
As I stated before, still pretty new to the developing community.
I'm currently working on some projects of my own as a starter. (Mods, rom, etc.)
My reason behind starting a new thread for this topic is because I've seen numerous users having problems with the chameleon error, so I took the initiative to ask if I could post this purely to help and inform other users.
What happened before was a 1 time thing.
I still expect respect as I give it.

When I first installed MA5 I got Chameleon stopped errors 4 or so times while the phone was first booting up, but as far as I can tell it didn't hurt anything.
On subsequent reboots and a couple of nandroid restores back to my old rom then back to the new one, it never happened again, and my phone seems to be fully working, including calls and txt.
So it was a very transient error that fixed itself just by rebooting or maybe even just by waiting.
Given that, do we know that a more invasive fix is even really necessary? Does it not clear after a reboot for some people? What does it break?
Also a description of what this fix does would be nice. People should not flash things without some idea of what it will actually do and how it will do it.

The error only applies if you revert to LJC/LJ1 after going to LK8/MA5. If you don't do this, you won't see it and you can move along without concern
For those going back you will have an issue as LJ1/LJC use an earlier SQLite DB version in the carrier partition than previous versions. Chameleon.apk in those earlier builds doesn't know how to handle it and so it crashes.
There are two solutions to this: Move chameleon to the new version to match the new DB version (which is Fix #1) or revert the carrier partition - which can be flashed by Odin but Sammy doesn't make an image for some reason - to LJC. (Fix #2)
One person reported that deleting the partition contents also forced a rebuild, but I'm personally not a fan of that option. No guarantee without seeing for myself that it rebuilds properly.

Great Post Regardless...Somehow I missed the Orig post anyway..LOL Thatnks to Gar and all who was involved...

Thank you for the excellent summary!

It also means my chameleon errors were probably not from installing ma5 but from when I temporarily reverted to a nandroid just to export txts and call logs.

Yes, there has been a post that has the actual coding in it for the fix so devs can implement it into the roms themselves.
Im sure it'll pick up soon and there wont need to be a flashable .zip.

Hey, just be glad garwynn and I were able to find that damn database error. I had poked around for a few weeks trying to figure it out then we dumped some logs from my phone during multiple errors and then again after updating chameleon and found the mismatched sqlite versions which were wreaking havoc on the chameleon apk and HFA. Basically every reboot the phone thought it was deactivated cuz it couldn't verify auth data in the carrier db's. Thanks for getting the thread up finally
PS. Next time someone posts something of mine with credit in the OP, trying PMing me before you rip the poster apart or just don't even bother saying anything at all. I don't GAF about credit or thanks, I do what I do for myself and just share because theres no point in hoarding my work. If I have a problem with someone posting my work I'll deal with it. I don't need people berating others for posting my work on my behalf. Honestly I'd be more pissed at others reactions than the person who posted my work. Thanks for your cooperation, now please edit all the unnecessary bashing of the OP and apologize for jumping all over them when it wasn't your place to try and get involved with something that was privately dealt with between the proper parties prior to being posted here. The OP did me a favor by posting this for us since I've been busy and hadn't gotten around to it, and this directly benefits everyone on this forum. Anyone who doesn't edit and apologize will be noted, and I will no longer help you or click your thanks button out of sheer principle. Thanks for your cooperation.

My experience in Q&A

So I finally posted in the Q&A section last night because I messed up my SystemUI.apk while trying to theme it...
I asked a simple question asking if anyone could post the stock apk from the latest leak... and never got a response yet.
I no longer need it because I have flashed CM9 since it was what I had on my SD when I flashed today.
I now know why there are so many users that post questions in the general section of the forum. This is the most disappointing part of this community other than the people who like stirring up arguments in the community.
If there is anyone else who has had a similar experience or that thinks that this forum lacks in helpful information, post here to explain your story and how you feel the community should change.

I understand completely what you are saying. I used to live in the Q&A section to try to help because there's not a lot of people that DO put in the effort and go out their way. I didn't get my "thanks" from being a mod, believe me, lol. I try to be laid back for that reason in the general section, but I can only allow so many questions before it gets overwhelming. I have seen a handful of members in this section that will see people through to get the help the asking members need. And I love that. Sometimes you have to give it a little more time, or a shameless bump is in order.

Yeah, I could have given it a little bit more time but without a status bar I didn't want to wait...
I guess instead of complaining about it, I will take the initiative to contribute my experience with the E4GT to the community. I'm no developer but I will try to help as best as I can.

Did you flash agats ics theme over the stock fe22? If thats the case he labeled them wrong and you have to flash deodexed instead of odexed theme. It was mentioned in the fe22 thread, happened to a few of us but you would really have to read everything to find it.
I look at q&a sometimes but I learned most of the stuff here from reading and most of the questions there are because people are too lazy to read. I typically just provide a link to a thread if I do answer any questions. Yours is valid though I flashed and downloaded the rom and that stupid theme 3 times thinking i had a bad flash checking md5 and stuff.

I flashed the odexed theme... I also thought it was a bad flash. I usually read most of the thread and the comments.
I just didn't read enough to see that there was a problem flashing over stock.

This time it was buried and as dumb as I felt flashing a theme that said deodexed over a stock rom it worked.

Thats pretty demanding, seeing that you are asking for free help. You should wait longer, and if you cant, thats why its always suggested to NAND backup your stuff.
You must realize that we all have lives outside of this forum, I too try to help out as often as I can with what little knowledge I have. Its the only way I can give back but I also work full-time and go to college full-time. So there are a few days where I can't find the time to post or help out. I'm not by any means saying that this is the case for everyone here, just simply giving you an example that may or may not be the case for some of us here.
I can almost promise you, however, if you give it enough time, someone WILL come to your aid.
I just hope you realize this and don't think any less of these people here. They really do put a lot of time and effort into helping and developing for all of us in hopes of getting nothing more than a simple "thanks".
I also hope that your next experience is nothing like the previous one.

I agree with the backup idea, but I'm not touching the backup restore functions on an ICS kernel until it has been fully tested and determined to be safe to use.
I thought I had backups of the SystemUI on my SD card but they were for earlier builds and would not work. I realize that everyone has their own life outside of XDA. That is why when I saw that my question didn't even have one reply when several other questions had new comments, I decided to just flash a new ROM.
The reason I have started this thread is because I am not the first user to be ignored when asking a simple question to ask if someone could help with such a simple issue.

Personally, I believe the Q&A section is pretty much useless and have never used it to gather or inquire information. As long as one uses the Search function in the forums effectively, there's no need for it.

In theory, yea. But a lot of those answers you "searched" for are found in the Q&A section.
---Jay--- From the CM9 powered E4GT
I admit I don't frequent Q&A as much as I do General and Development, but if I see something I feel that I can answer then I always try to contribute. If it's something completely out of my league but I know someone who might know the answer then I will, occasionally, post that information.
While I understand OP's need for a quick resolution (although most questions in Q&A need the same) I agree with those who have advocated allowing a little more time for people to respond.
I know it can be frustrating (and intimidating) to be stuck on a problem with no answer but again, as stated in the posts above, sometimes people who can help simply aren't online at the time the problem is posted. Though I'm here a lot during the day (from work, shhhh) in the evenings my time is a bit more sporadic and I've come back to the computer with PMs from people who asked me something but thought I was ignoring them, that bothers me because I would never willingly ignore someone.
So I think Q&A definitely has its uses and maybe this post should be our tap on the shoulder to peruse it more often and see if there is something we can help answer.
To the OP.
Why didn't you just download one of the stock roms in the roms section and extract your own?

When most roms here are 1 click executable files its not so easy to extract the apk...
And with most of the roms that are zipped, they are already themed...
I have resolved my own issue by flashing a new rom, that was not the point of this thread... the point I wanted to bring up with this thread is that it is apparent that 95% of the users here only frequent General and Development. If more users just checked Q&A once and a while to see if there is anyone needing help with something that they have already experienced, they could easily reply with what they did to resolve the issue.
Let's all stop pointing the blame and help to better the community... we all can help in one way or another.

Im not against the rules or anything else Im sure they are helpful for the bigger picture.:cyclops: I am however stating its ironic that he did better with there stuff than they did. IMO when a dev does that its usually buggy or simply not as good , his roms were always up to date and he had stuff out much quicker than others.
At the end of the day everyone here is modding someone elses work to begin with so getting banned for using a modification to an open source or Samsung based software is just weird to me.
Isnt that why theres two dev forums to begin with ?
Just so that we are all clear on this subject. He is not Banned.
Like someone above said, he still has a ROM in one of the Note sections (can't remember if NI or NII atm). I am one of the Mods over those sections as well so I have seen his threads and activity.
Now I don't know what exactly went down and why the thread was locked and even if I did, I'm not sure I can speak freely. I was called away on a family emergency that weekend and when I got back it was locked and the other thread about this was in full swing. It seemed like a kang job, but as I said, I do not know the particulars. I am only posting in this thread to let you know that he was not banned and chose to host his S3 ROM elsewhere.
Please don't make this thread into a pissing contest about who's was better and random speculation about what happened. Plus, if he is not here to defend himself, he shouldn't be attacked (not saying that any of the ones that posted attacked him in any way *more for future posters, if this thread stays open).

Seems like you're arguing semantics. Only thing I see wrong is not giving credit. (ill surrender the end point that it's xdas way of managing things and that's fine.)
However you and everyone else are working off Google and to a lesser extent Samsungs work to begin with he only borrowed what you tweaked in someone else's code to begin with ;don't know why devs feel they should have special treatment. Having followed android *devs* since the early G1 days I find the current state rather egotistical and counter productive at times.
Again I say... I understand about not giving credit but alluding to him being a thief is ironic considering what is actually being done.
You say I have no idea, that's fine perhaps I don't . But proclaiming thievery with exclamation points doesn't exactly educate or inform anyone of anything let alone show that I'm in the dark on the matter.

Credit is the least he can ask. Do you know or even have an idea how long it takes to make a rom? De compiling recompiling apks tweaking smali. **** I tried to theme a couple pngs and 15 toggles and it took me a couple days just reading to figure out what to do! They have to edit a lot of files. It's long tedious work and they do it all for free!!
Regardless if it was based off Google code. They edited and made it unique. It is now theirs. For example for school you have to write a paper about Lincoln. You research about Lincoln and final write your paper. What your saying is that the paper you wrote is not yours because you pretty much just reworded facts you read online. (provided you didn't copy paste) the paper is now your own paper that you can claim rights too.

Theirs small things like make sure noise suppression is checked in your call settings or someone else stated that turning the volume down a bit fixes it. And or flashing another radio could cause a temp fix for it...but please read and or search before asking questions......

I hope you feel really good about yourself, starting this thread all over such a small issue.
The irony of this post is that now when people search up "call echo" on the search bar now, this is the first thread out of several dozens of other threads that shows up and mentions this issue.
What's worst is that the post doesn't solve anything at all, lol. If it really bothered you, you could have simply provided links in your post to the particular threads where those who are actually looking will know where to search for prior answers.
In that way it will save you time and others... additionally, your rant wouldn't be another waste of space in these forums and instead actual be of some use to people... just a thought.
In the second paragraph I clearly stated the little things that people have found to temporarily fix the issue

And its a small issue that every one keeps asking about Instead of searching or reading thru the forums I've seen it asked at least 10 times or more in multiple threads I myself don't have the issue and why even post in here saying This is a waste of space when your reply was also a waste considereing none of you posted anything to help with the issue either but clearly just posted to flame

What kind of responses were you expecting from your post? Obviously since you emphasized greatly that people need to use the search bar more there is no need for us to add more to the minor information you already posted other than proper links... which then again contradicts using the search bar. As much as it is a nuisance, there are always going to be people on these forums who will ask old questions... don't let it be your problem, you're not obliged to answer the questions all the time. There are actually some bright people on the forums that enjoy the idea of helping someone (even if it's a common question), cheers!

Kind of like how Mohan asked people not to post in his Dev thread unless they have logs. And to use the embryo general thread instead yet people still fill his thread with the same few questions... It's crazy..

I understand your wanting to rant and I feel your frustration (Believe me when I say this. You should see some of the stuff that comes our way). Like FT said above, there is always going to be someone that asks the same question over and over and over, sometimes the same question in multiple threads. These people will never learn. But they are becoming more and more predominate in the forums lately.
We have 4.8m users and anywhere from 36-50k users online at a time. That type of userbase is fantastically hard to comprehend when it comes to things like this. Few want to learn anymore and many just come here to make their phone/tablet cool looking and could care less about smali hacks, de/compiling apks (what apk means for that matter), Android.policy.jars,...
Best answer I could give you now is to simply ignore those posts and move on to the next relevant post. If you want to answer, then by all means. Users should help each other when possible. But that doesn't mean spoonfeeding either.

I'll leave this thread open until 11am est if anyone else want to respond but after that it is getting Closed Closed Closed Closed Closed
He's absolutely right about the post but unfortunately it was a waste of time and effort because most of the people that ask the same questions over and over are never gonna take the time to read this

To all devs

I would love it if every rom posting would go back to the format of what is working and not...it is hard to keep flashing roms just to see what is working or not...plus I'm sure I'm wearing out my phone flashing 5 roms in a day just to find out they all have the same flaws or not or even if it was fixed..ie does video calling work, or hml, or any other feature that this phone can normally do...remember when devs use to have 2 lists in the op and pictures so you could window shop for your rom and not have to spend the time downloading, wiping and flashing just to restore your nandroid because you don't like the look or the fact some things don't work...it would really help and it only takes a couple of minutes.....thank all of you for your time and development of this device...

Although I agree, your going tone other get zero response or (and more probable) catch flack about being demanding.
While typically, the android community development is free, everyone has became accustomed to the idea that eta's, change logs, working/not working lists are simply below them. Perhaps in their eyes it is. What I would like to remind everyone is this...time isn't limitless, and can be very valuable to some. If you don't like the community feedback (ie. Asking for these lists; small stuff) than maybe you should just (loosely) develop and/or cook ROMs for your own personal use. Xda is a community... A community built on knowledge, user base, and the good ol' boy system.
Just remember what we are here for. We all own a T989 and want to make our devices outlast even the newer models.

You're assuming that people will read and thus not need to ask. As someone who spent over a year developing for the vibrant I couldn't even count the times that I either directed someone's questions to the op that contained the answer or just ignored the questions all together. Now as just an onlooker who casually flashes I read the op and if I don't see the answer I want I watch the thread and let others ask/answer or do my own research like checking out gerrit or just move on and find something else.
When I was building ROMs I would spend hours at the computer and by the time I got around to posting my work I may have forgotten one or two things so change logs were usually only partial.
Getting the latest software on your phone while free does take a little effort on the part of the user.

O and about the free thing I don't ask anyone to do this for us and I certainly don't expect it but if you are going do something for a lot of people than do it right...I do a lot of free things in my life...I'm a dj for 27 years in sfla and I have to spin for free most of the time because nobody wants to pay, but that doesn't mean that I am going to do a subpar job for all my fans just because I'm not going to get paid...I do it because I love it and if someone had a request I don't say well I'm doing this for free so too bad...I hate that argument you guys always use...and I donate where appropriate....

Well the reason this is happening is because 4.2 just came out. People are curious to know what works and what doesn't. Devs haven't had enough time to check all of the glitches and bugs. Devs also rely on us for fixing bugs because they don't always have the time to do it.
As per the same questions being asked over and over, people simply don't know what the search button does.
And yeah

Wow! Someone just makes a basic request and gives thanks to developers, and suddenly everyone is all over him and getting all defensive about developers feelings or something. How did it turn into this??
I kind of agreed with the request as far as how nice it might be to know pros and cons of each rom without reading through pages and pages of useless posts in the dev threads to find out each detail. It seems to me that most developers appreciate it when more people are using their rom (and obviously people appreciate the rom they're using) sooo...it might help people to understand what they're flashing and they might be more likely to flash a rom that they understand from a end-user point of view.
If developers don't want to add a list of what works and what doesn't to the OP, then they don't have to. If developers want to help flashers in their decision-making process (and likely boost the number of people using their rom), then adding such a list might help.
As far as I can tell, that's the end of the story.
So if the Op doesn't state what's working, then people have the right to clutter threads and annoy them, right? Its a win win situation, unless devs like being asked the same question a billion times. It could help keep the clutter to a minimum but its up to the devs. Not that I'm demanding a perfect op, but there are reasons as to why people ask and ask.
1. Too lazy to read.
2. Fast response wanted(see 1)
3. Op doesn't state what's working.
4. Search doesn't always help( at least for me on the xda app.)
5. People want a solution.

Yes bro. But I can't worry about what the haters think about me. All I can control is how I take feedback and grow. Whether you flash my ROM or not is your choice. But at least I have the decency to try my best and to keep my silly comments to my self ,and not to discourage people who make ROMs for my enjoyment. Maybe something some of the members on XDA should work on. That's just my take on it though. Everyone is entitled to an opinion right.
Peace out!

Constructive feedback:
1. Actually make a rom, don't just kang one, change the name and promise big things to come that never happen.
2. Communicate in your roms thread. Help people troubleshoot problems. Don't just give one sentence replies that point to basic fixes that most of us know isn't going to help. That's called brushing people off. Also, when a guy tests something for you, and reports it boot loops, don't just ignore him and never reply. Also....actually hitting quote when you reply to someone makes things far less confusing. And spamming your own thread with post after post in a row is messy. Collect your thoughts first and post once.
3. Keep your thread on topic. Don't use one roms thread to promote a bunch of other projects. Its confusing. People have no idea what they are flashing when you put up all these links to roms that have nothing to do with the opening post.
4. If people constantly flame your threads....take a good look at what they are criticizing. Sometimes they are completely right. Even if the way they said it was perhaps rude or sarcastic.
You say you control how you take feedback and grow? So do it. Grow. You've had a lot of feedback, granted some hasn't been presented the best way, but still....people have "complained" that your communication is weak, you don't support your roms well, you "borrow" too much and don't add original work to your roms and most of all your threads are a mish mash mess. Look at your carbon thread ....the carbon rom stopped being updated and you just started tossing test rom after test rom out and going on about future plans that never saw the light of day. Was a completely confusing and mess of a thread.
Why am I spending all this time saying all this? To offend you? No....I don't even know you, why go out of my way to offend you. Look at my stats, my thanks equal about a third of my total posts. I like to help. Yes, I don't like seeing crap go on and bullying.....and its led to my share of arguing....but I try to help.
The more devs working on our phone the better. So I'm trying to help YOU see what needs improving.
Please understand, we just don't need more and more drama here. And if you repeat the past, drama will follow you for sure.

And I will add this. Sorry to say, but I've seen you ask some really novice questions in other rom threads. Ones a "dev" should know the answers to....or at the very least be able to search and find a very easy and quick answer to. This makes it appear that you don't know a whole lot. Anyone can read a guide and kang or port roms, but why? We don't need a bunch of identical roms with different names. Of course some ports are nice, but you are not a "dev" cause you can port and kang and maybe cherry pic a few extras.
Why not learn some more before sharing projects? If you put out something unique and/or original ......watch the flaming stop quickly.

1. Thanks for your feedback. I do appreciate it.
2. If you have a problem with my kangs or ports don't flash in fact don't even look at the ROM. And bro you claim to try to help me. But if you are not trying to get at me why don't you just send me a pm. Huh? You wine and cry because I have links of different ROMs on my one thread. But I really don't even see the problem with that. LOOK AT THE OP. You can find what you are looking for there. Because posting my ROMs on one thread is better than having several threads with my name on it.
3.And I hate to break it to you. But a lot of my novice questions were asked when I was a novice. And I ask them so that I can learn and put more knowledge to my arsenal.
4. If you are tired of seeing the same thing. You better get used to it. Android is recycled material. And I only do ports for Roms that this device doesn't have to add to this device's arsenal. So please don't hate if you don't like the ROM being ported. Just flash another ROM. We have plenty.
Finally... If you have any more problems with how I develop my ROMs I really don't care bro. Comment bugs and fixes not schemes. If you really want a particular ROM from me pm me and I'll do my best. That goes for any comment you have.
Peace out!
P.S if you like to help don't put that jello garbage or cat crap on my questions. I don't have time for that bs. Keep that to yourself. In fact you haven't even helped me at all with any of my aroma questions just saying....
No one is helping with your aroma questions because you lost all credibility here, at least in the t989 section!
