[Q] Building a ROM - Requests - Samsung Galaxy Gio GT-S5660

In the past few days I have caught up on ROM building and such, and I plan to get started on creating a new ROM for the Gio. I have tried many ROMs, and I find that each one has a specific feature that catches my eye. I am looking to create a ROM that includes these features so it will be the 'Greatest ROM for Gio'...Anyways, here's a list of features I plan to include:
- CRT OFF and ON Animations
- Smooth and Responsiveness (Lower RAM consumption)
- Clean look
The reason that I'm posting is because I'm looking for advice on ROM building, which source is the easiest to build from (besides stock), any features that you would like to be included, etc. Thanks very much, though there's no rush - I'm going to take my time! I have another year and a half with my Gio!

You could make it for gaming

In other words - make it RAM, CPU and GPU efficient? Perhaps if I eliminate resource hogging services and processes, it will be smooth enough to run a higher CPU frequency (902mhz anyone?)!

Yep

how bout the bravia engine? have you tried it yet?
if yes, does it really make some improvements to your display quality (image & video)?
yea i use it since the day i rooted my phone, i like the flashable version though
+1 for flashable
Flash version is fully selectable also
I like the app personally, its a little faster to change things if you want to swap something out. I have not noticed a huge improvement in image quality just some tweaks here and there. I LOVE the 3g and WiFi data tweaks, EVERYTHING loads faster now. Steaming tweaks make music load faster and YouTube videos also.
However if you like flash able zips search around here on xda and you will find this tool.
I can make a video on this if you guys want however i need a screen recording app

Also, not recommended to use ALL network tweaks. Idk which, but one of them stop webpages from loading. It'll say webpage not loaded.

I'll add that to main post, yes I only used speed tweaking there was one that had to do with HOW it loaded which is probably the one you area taking about.

How do you tell if the Bravia Engine is doing it's thing... I flashed it and enabled it on pimp my ROM app, but I can't tell.
Also is there a way to flash the 3D Rosie and drawer mods that you see in many of the custom ROMs? I'm using the stock rom, and I just want tweak up my CDMA One V without plunging myself into flashing a whole ROM...

Im using revolution HD at the minute after using omega rom. HD is pretty close to stock rom. Im constantly looking for a rom that is really customisable like I used to have on my i9000. (Darky rom 10.2) as a lot of the mods you got OTA but as far as I can see there is no darky rom for n7100

Phoenix ROM is nice. A lot of custom things. Minor modifications that are in it improves comfort
- circle batter icon
- H+ and range in 1 icon
- sound driver
- 21 toggle
- STweaks for overclock and more
There is no such thing as a "best ROM". What suits you is completely different to what suits others - it's subjective.
We all try x ROMs to find our what we like. Why should you try to take shortcuts? Don't be so lazy, try different ROMs and don't expect anyone to do the work for you. You're idle and want spoon feeding. GTFOOH and do your own research.

OC is not always safe, but putting 1200 max on this one is not dangerous...
To change governor / frequency and ram rules... I use the "Rom Toolbox".
I use Flinnys JB rom, it has CPU settings in Performance options (I think any CM based rom should have those) that allow you control min, max fequencies and governor. And given that Flinny includes kernel that supports overclocking you pretty much don't need any extra software to overclock. I set my device to 245-1500 with interactive governor. In conjuction with background process limit set to 2 device performs very well.

[ROM][V20F][AT&T][P93x][NitroTNT v2.2] Stock-modified ICS [07-23-2013][UPDATE]

AT&T V20F NitroTNT Version 2.2
Based on V20F from HO!NO! (Thanks for all your work) and added Wind Kernel 3.7 ICS.
Additional thanks goes to mattman86, lyfkevin & kronicskillz whose work is also in this.
I made this with the intention making it as close to what AT&T would have done (without the bloat), plus make general improvements to the entire stock experience. One of the things I wanted to address was what some people have referred to as "LAG". I think I have addressed this nicely as version 2 has no perceivable lag. I also wanted to start addressing some of the ugliness (thank you mpsantiago) by restyling the icons to something I find more appealing. I look forward to everyone's feedback.
Status Bar icon changes:
KronicUI Mod....thank you Kronicskillz.....
4G and 4G lte icons made smaller (stock ICS had them way too big)
If you prefer the original system bar icons and theme download the attachment below
In future versions I intend to work on the cosmetics of things like the dialer app.

I started this little project because I was never 100% happy with any of the stock versions out there and so this is the end result. Looks great! just had to tell u this is the exact setup (- your icon/ status bar work) that I have been using since hono's release; even down to the launcher, Google now, wind, etc etc. Great minds think alike eh? Pretty much as close as we can get to a stock lg jellybean rom. That being said I haven't flashed but can pretty safely assume nitrotnt is crazy fast, incredibly stable, and one of the best roms for battery life available. I'm working on a similar cm10.1 based version now until WiFi is fixed on the official jb leak.
Edit: what app do you recommend for overclocking? Specifically the GPU both 2/3d. Also settings like ksm, zram, schedulers etc for best performance? I like to play around to find the best setups for performance, gaming, battery life, heavy usage etc. Thanks again

In regards to an overclocking app I just use no frills as I have no desire to oc the GPU. With that being said you could probably use CPU tuner or something similar. Since it has wind kernel it shouldn't be a problem. In regard to other settings I use what lfkevin has recommended for the ICS version of wind kernel (intellidemand & row) even though for the cm10.1 version he recommends ondemand and cfq. What the differences are I don't know I am still a bit of a newbie. . In regards to zram. I remember HO!NO! a long time ago recommending to not change those settings, but that could have also been in regards to cm9. I hope this helps some. I really am not a developer I just can figure out how to tinker. Best of luck and I hope you enjoy this ROM.

i have a few comments... first of all nice work not bad at all.
2nd i noticed that it runs much smoother with apex launcher.
3rd fyi MHL is verified working on this rom. (due to based on stock nature)
4 is a request, is it possible to add circle with percentage battery icon and the blue data signal icon?, also is it possible to make bluetooth go grey instead of white when not in use, and make it slightly smaller?
not a huge deal but the white is a bit anoying, also would be nice to remove am/pm from status bar as it takes up room and almost nobody needs it
overall good work nice rom

Thank you for the comments. In regards to the launcher, the Optimus UI is just my personal preference but if you want to use Apex just freeze the Optimus launcher after you install Apex so it isn't using any system memory.
In regards to your request it would be as simple as replacing the systemui.apk from HO!NO!'s v20f since I used his ROM as a base for this. As far as the AM/PM that will require modifying XML files in the systemui.apk so that is going to take some more time to work through those. For the Bluetooth it would just be a simple PNG file swap, easy enough. So I will see about providing you a modified file for that. Who knows I even might like it better . Thank you again for the critique.

thanks man, one other thing i noticed is that poweramp is crashing, i haven't figured out if its rom related or not yet, if you feel like it you could install the poweramp trial and tell me if it crashes on your phone, thanks again.
i noticed the bluetooth thing right away cuz i leave mine perma on, since i use my bluetooth stereo in my car and i can't be bothered to turn it off and on every time, i also noticed that leaving it on doesn't consume much power (atleast i dont think it does).
---------- Post added at 09:59 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:27 AM ----------
just to clarify i want the blue icons from CM cuz i use an all blue theme, icons, background etc, that's why i like the blue data/wifi/battery icons, if it's too much work to change them all though, or if other people dont want it, just don't worry about it i dont want to be too much trouble.
is there a way for me to just mod them on mine? ive never looked into it.
edit ----> i isolated the crash problem i think, it's happening to anything that uses sdcard, so i think my card needs a format.
- update, i can play media files off my sdcard with es file explorer, but not any media player that uses the system media scanner
- update i think the is the fault of an app i used that was suposed to rescan media.
i tried a bunch nothing fixing it so i'm going to do a full wipe and try again, i'm liking this rom though it has potential if i get it all working.
i got the crashing issue after formatting sdcard and full wipe and reinstall, something is amiss in the rom i think.

so the fix for this is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39845686&highlight=poweramp#post39845686
i believe, i no longer have the rom installed but i'm assuming thats it in case anyone else needs it. it's a flashable zip that removes some of the tweaks he did that cause some apps to crash like poweramp
I will have some free time Sunday, I think and will look at incorporating these changes. Never noticed the power amp issue because I don't use but I will try to duplicate. I will also install the fix to make sure it doesn't create other issues before I roll it out in an update. Thanks again for your feedback. I have been using this ROM 100% since I rolled it out and just love it. Just to give you an idea I have never run with a ROM longer than 2 weeks before installing something different and I have had this phone for over a year.

I hope this is close to *dare I say it* j****bam. Sounds about right, and I am excited, as that was one of the best for my old s2.

It's pretty consistent with the aosp builds being put out, gapps (225mb) are included

Nah its not close to j****bam. At first i thought it was the reincarnation of my favorite Frankenstein ROM in the whole world but its still a good running ROM nonetheless

I remember those Frankenstein builds. They were really good too. I really liked those as well, but I don't know enough to maintain builds (working on it though). I would have taken over those back in the day. The Dev that maintained it for the spring s2 moved on.

Oh and the dead is reincarnated. The Frankenstein lives. Made me smile when I ran their build today but it was uploaded January 2nd and still had camera and two other apps fc'ing. I'm sure their next update should be daily driver worthy.
