WiFi problem!! - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I am having a problem with my WiFi on my note 2.
If I sign in to my WiFi network, the speed will be around 19mbps.
But then the speed slowly starts getting slower, and within a hour the speed will have dropped to about 2mbps.
The only way to get this speed back to 19mbps is to go to WiFi settings, and click "forget network".
But then as soon as I sign back in, within a hour, its slow again.
I have checked on all my computers, and other android devices, and they all keep a constant WiFi speed of 19mbps.
I have tried flashing lots of different stock ROMs, and revolution HD, but nothing fixes the problem
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this problem?.
Thanks in advance
Cheers
Corey

Sightly strange WIFI issue

Good afternoon XDA HOX owners,
I'm having a really strange problem with getting on to my wifi AT HOME ONLY.
The phone sees the wifi, registers the strength of the signal, but loses connection all the time. it's the first time I've had this issue with a gadget, and this is the 4th smart phone that's been owned in my household, while using this particular wireless router. there's also 2 laptops, a NAS and an iPad (EEWwwww ) ... and my mates that have my wifi password get on without an issue...
If I turn the wifi on the phone off and on, it works for maybe ten seconds to a minute, and then drops connectivity, but not the signal. I know this because of the little 'up and down' connectivity arrows that run in the CM10 wifi indicator. they go either up, or down or nothing, but the signal is still there.
Any help would be massively appreciated as it's ruining my love for the awesome device the HOX is, especially running CM10.
Thanks :good:

Gonna bump this thread up because I'm home and it's driving me batty!

I had this issue with my homehub on the 'n' setting. Something just didnt work between the phone and hub. Try changing it to 'g' if its not that im at a loss. My.x would work everywhere else but home properly
Now works flawlessly
My nexus used to fly with the hub. Slightly irritated i had to lower performance purely for my phone. Its npt a massive difference but theres a reason theres a g and a n lol

Thanks mate.
So I've tried that and no luck. Virgin phone support says it must be a 'hardware issue with the phone'.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks

I'm having similar issues with my Wi-fi at home, tho my connection lasts longer, sometimes 10 mins, sometimes 5 hours+ sometimes all day. The strange part is that when i use wi-fi on the phone alot like some sort of heavy stuff youtube, downloading etc. then my connection drops. I've tried using only N connection and BGN Mixed on 20 and 40HZ channel and N seams to give me the best results, never tried B and G connections since i think those reduce the range of your WI-FI , too bad i didn't go for A B G N router. Anyway could be up to my router or something, every device that uses my WI-FI has same issues with this router. I even took it to the repair center they've done some ping tests and showen me that router works perfect. anyway back home still does those buggy things. If anyone has any good idea please feel free to suggest us.
I'm also having an issue with mine, although slightly different.
My phone connects to available wireless with no problem and stays connected however when I leave that location it stays connected instead of switching back to mobile data. I have to turn off wireless and then turn it back on to get it to switch to mobile data.
Kinda a pain in the arse and really annoying. I've missed allot of important emails since I got this phone due to me forgetting to turn wifi off everytime I leave somewhere with wifi.
None of my previous smart phones had this issue. I'm hoping that if I get custom rom on it, it will work properly,

[Q] Very (very) slow load on home network.

Good afternoon;
This has bothered me for sometime but I normally only use my wifi at someones house or my own in the evening and both times when I noticed I always make note to ask and forget.. So.
I bought the HTC One X about 4 months ago and have had this issue since day one. I recently updated to Jellybean and the issue is still there.
I speedtest on my PC (desktop) 30mb/5mb and using speedtest on my HTC I get 26/5 (all good)
My issue is when I'm using WiFi the loading of pages, pictures.. ANYTHING is very very slow. It'll take me 10 seconds to open say slickdeals.net where as when I'm using my phones Data (AT&T) it takes me about 1-3 seconds. This goes with any site and often it'll time out as well (using wifi)
Disconnecting/reconnecting wifi does help with the connection timeout however the speed issue (of lack of) is still there and taking 10+ for whatever I'm trying to few. There are points where the speed seems normal, pictures load when I click them however I would say 95% of the time sites/pictures each take at least 5-10 seconds to load.
Some info on network and HTC One X
Network:
Sec: WPA/WPA2
Speed: 30mb/5mb
No ports blocked (I even tried DMZ'ing phone)
Phone:
Version 4.1.1
HTC Sense 4+
Anyone have any ideas or need more info? I would love any light into this issue. I have read WiFi issues with this phone but most seem to be with the quality/connection to the adapter and my signal is very good. Thanks all!
Just a throwing one in there, have you tried different browsers?

Thanks for the reply, Sorry for the late response but i wanted to give a few browsers a day to test.
Same issue on FF/Dolphin Browser/ Default
One thing I notice is that under Settings>WiFi>(My Network)>"Link Speed" shows only 2-6 Mbps. Running speed tests get me often .5 - .8 DOWN and 5.1 UP.
WiFi boost is enabled on the phone as well.

[Q] Proxy Server Problem

Hello all,
Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, I've searched but couldn't find anything.
I have an Xperia S on regardless of what ROM I'm running I always encounter a problem whilst browsing over mobile data. WiFi is fine.
After I've browsed for a while, I'll get a message saying 'Unable to connect to the proxy server' or similar depending on the browser. Switching to a different browser doesn't help and the only way I can restore mobile data is to reboot the handset.
I've tried stock ROMs, FXP and now I'm running Slimbean 4.2.2 Build 5 with Kernel 3.0.67-EOS+ and every time I have had the same problem. I had this problem out of the box. This is my second handset after my first developed the yellow screen fault, but my first handset also had this proxy problem.
Hopefully one of you helpful folk can point me in the direction of something that might fix this problem.
Thanks a lot,
Ewar
I had that problem only with 4.2 roms. CM10 and stock/stock based are all fine. The only thing I could do to fix the problem was airplane mode toggle. It's faster and uses less battery than restating the phone...

Thanks for your quick reply and suggestion.
It's strange, but I've had the problem since I went from GB to ICS. I'm sure I've tried airplane mode back when it first happened, I've tried many things but the only thing that definitely works is a reboot.
It might just be me, but it seems like the speed at which the problem reoccurs is linked to the length of time the phone is in a shutdown state. If I do a reboot, the error will occur quicker than if I'd have shutdown the handset and left it for a few minutes before switching on. Of course, it could be a slow onset of insanity brought about by owning an Xperia S!

Quick Question : Is this only happening with the current service provider or every service provider?
I really think the problem maybe with the phone settings.
The service provider might be using a proxy channe.
Could you please try to edit the proxy data setting under the APN.
I hope this would solve the problem. I wonder how the proxy keeps popping out for you if the data works for sometime

[Q] WIFI Speed Issues

Hi Folks,
Looking for some help please, my wife got the new xperia z1 compact last week but has been having issues with it since she got it when connected to wifi.
The problem is the internet connection speed is less than 5mb when connected to the wifi, now the internet in the house that the issue is with is 120mb connection and I have tested several other smartphones, tablets and laptops and everything else is working fine.
I have tried deleting the wifi connection and reconnecting it made no difference, we done a factory restore of the phone and it made no difference either.
We then took the phone back got a replacement handset and brought the phone home, and guess what the exact same issues still even with this new handset.
any ideas please folks as this is really frustraing 4G connection is faster when she goes outside
Can you be more clear. Is the connection speed (wifi) only on the phone 5MBit/s or does the connection speed of the whole wifi network drop to 5MBit/s when your wife is connected?

The whole wifi network is fine and stable its only the phone thats not able to get above 5mbs
The strange thing was the replacement phone tested fine for speed as soon as we unboxed it but 1 hour later it was right back to where we started from
How did you measure the speeds? With the app 'Speedtest'?
How many bars does the wifi connection show on the phone? Is it possible that the phone is downloading data in the background?

yes I used the speedtest app to check the speed, the wifi signal shows as full strength on the phone.
I have checked to see if there was anything running in the background and there was not
I also checked this over several days incase it was a data or update that was happening to the phone but still no change
Well that's weird. And another phone (on the same spot) has faster connection? Have you tried on different wifis (e.g. at work)?
Yeah tried other phones and a tablet and all working fine
Unable to connect to a wifi at work as it's locked down
No other open wifi connections avail near me either just now
Ok so just wiped the phone again and set up as a brand new device
New google account etc
Only downloaded speed test app and everything was looking great and the speeds were 50mb
Then the phone updated infoeye and since that update was Downloaded and installed the wifi speed is now back to no more than 5mb
Then try to disable infoeye and test again. Speed should be high again if I am not mistaken.

Tried that and made no difference. Phone returned and the wife has gone back to a different handset which is working

They can add as many gadgets to the same wifi, the Z1 Compact isn`t meant to support more. I tried it on different wifis, in different towns, it`s almost the same thing

What do you mean? I am on a wifi with atleast 20 other devices and I don't have any problem.
i got a pretty similar issue. It's not only the internet-speed, it's wifi-speed in general. Tried to copy at 200 MB file from my NAS via wifi to the phone. Speeds go up to 2 MB/s for short, but suddenly drops to about 300-500 kb/s and stays there. Copying the same file to other devices (tablet, Laptop, HTC One) runs with 2,5 MB/s stable.
Try/internet speed Master from play store worked for me

Seems there are some wifi performance degradation with some WIFI 802.11g routers.
I have 1 router which I could not reach more 2 mbit, no matter of signal.

Note 2 WiFi battery drain (GT-N7100)

Hi! Lets make this work please!
My battery drains 30-40% over night when I'm connected to my home WiFi. Now here is what I did:
1. Tried other WiFi networks and none of them drain battery like my home network.
2. Changed Roms (both tw and cm based)
3. Changed kernels
4. Changed bootloader
5. Changed modems
6. Changed battery
7. This is where I concluded that my phone couldn't be the problem so I've decided to change my home router.
8. Tried to change wpa2-psk--> wep.
9. Tried to change configuration with my network provider.
10. Tried third router as my last option.
None of this helped me, and I'm not seeing any link between all of these that could be my problem. All of this started after 1 year of owning my phone, and has been going for about half a year now. I would like any suggestions as I'm out of ideas right now. Sorry for the long post :/

Yeah, but I can't find anything that could work so that's why I made this thread, maybe someone can give me a good advice or an idea what to do next. Thanks anyway

If you are in an area where there are lots of other wifi signals around, I would try to change the wifi router to a different channel.
I had some other wifi issues until I figured out everyone around me was saturating the specific channel I was using.
I used the app wifi analyzer on the play store, and selected a channel that no one was using for my router.
Not saying that it will definitely solve your issues, but it is worth a try.

Thanks for the reply I have tried changing WiFi channels but it didn't work, however I didn't use any apk but directly from my router. I will definitely try this when I get home though!

The app just shows what channels are used around you and it's strength. In the attached pic there is not much wifi around but as an example I moved my channel on my router from 1 to 6 since there is already 2 other ones on 1.
Normally it is bad mobile reception though that drains battery like mad. Do you have good reception where you are located? Leave your mobile data off for the night to test whether that was the cause. You have swapped routers, so it could probably be mobile related at your location.
I know you have tried modems. I upgraded my Note II to newer firmware but had horrific reception causing bad battery life at some locations . Flashing only the older modern from my previous firmware sorted that. You tried that, so no help there.
If you are on touchwiz based rom you can look at disabling fast dormancy via the store app too. Some mobile networks / towers don't support it and can cause drain like mad.
Good luck.

Yo! My network reception is really good where I live so no problem there, my battery drain is horrible only on my home WiFi network. When I connect to my neighbor's wifi I get barely any drain even though it barely catches any signal from it. I will look into this fast dormancy thingie as I have no idea what that is, and test it again. I'm in another town right now on college, but I'll get home as soon as I can to try this, and maybe try changing my channels again. Thanks for your help and suggestions, I'll just try to get as many ideas as I can right now so I can test the sh*t out of my phone

Your wifi is possessed dude. Safer to stay in the other town for now... Lol. Anyway enjoy and good luck.
