Note 2 WiFi battery drain (GT-N7100) - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi! Lets make this work please!
My battery drains 30-40% over night when I'm connected to my home WiFi. Now here is what I did:
1. Tried other WiFi networks and none of them drain battery like my home network.
2. Changed Roms (both tw and cm based)
3. Changed kernels
4. Changed bootloader
5. Changed modems
6. Changed battery
7. This is where I concluded that my phone couldn't be the problem so I've decided to change my home router.
8. Tried to change wpa2-psk--> wep.
9. Tried to change configuration with my network provider.
10. Tried third router as my last option.
None of this helped me, and I'm not seeing any link between all of these that could be my problem. All of this started after 1 year of owning my phone, and has been going for about half a year now. I would like any suggestions as I'm out of ideas right now. Sorry for the long post :/

It is clear that your phone is alright. So this forum won't be much help.

Yeah, but I can't find anything that could work so that's why I made this thread, maybe someone can give me a good advice or an idea what to do next. Thanks anyway

If you are in an area where there are lots of other wifi signals around, I would try to change the wifi router to a different channel.
I had some other wifi issues until I figured out everyone around me was saturating the specific channel I was using.
I used the app wifi analyzer on the play store, and selected a channel that no one was using for my router.
Not saying that it will definitely solve your issues, but it is worth a try.

Thanks for the reply I have tried changing WiFi channels but it didn't work, however I didn't use any apk but directly from my router. I will definitely try this when I get home though!

The app just shows what channels are used around you and it's strength. In the attached pic there is not much wifi around but as an example I moved my channel on my router from 1 to 6 since there is already 2 other ones on 1.
Normally it is bad mobile reception though that drains battery like mad. Do you have good reception where you are located? Leave your mobile data off for the night to test whether that was the cause. You have swapped routers, so it could probably be mobile related at your location.
I know you have tried modems. I upgraded my Note II to newer firmware but had horrific reception causing bad battery life at some locations . Flashing only the older modern from my previous firmware sorted that. You tried that, so no help there.
If you are on touchwiz based rom you can look at disabling fast dormancy via the store app too. Some mobile networks / towers don't support it and can cause drain like mad.
Good luck.

Yo! My network reception is really good where I live so no problem there, my battery drain is horrible only on my home WiFi network. When I connect to my neighbor's wifi I get barely any drain even though it barely catches any signal from it. I will look into this fast dormancy thingie as I have no idea what that is, and test it again. I'm in another town right now on college, but I'll get home as soon as I can to try this, and maybe try changing my channels again. Thanks for your help and suggestions, I'll just try to get as many ideas as I can right now so I can test the sh*t out of my phone

Your wifi is possessed dude. Safer to stay in the other town for now... Lol. Anyway enjoy and good luck.

problem with wifi

I have problem with my nexus, wifi is connected but I cannot access any internet. Sometimes interet works normal, then suddenly disappears, wifi is connected normal but there isnt internet
I tired wih other android phone, samsung galaxy ace, but same thing
But nokia n8 works normal, this dosnt happening
I do not know of which can be either the router or the phone
I tried to change settings on the phone and the router but nothing
If someone has an idea, I would be grateful to him
I had the same problem on my nexus, while the wifi worked fine on other devices. I flashed several different ROMS, to no avail, and resolved myself to believe that it was a hardware problem. Before flashing back to stock, I reset the Router, just for laughs. Problem solved. Make sure your wifi settings on android are correct, and try resetting your router. It's worth a shot. Which ROM are you on?
i tired several times with reseting router, even change settings, sometimes internet start to work but after 30-40 minuts stops again
i dosnt now what exactly ROM is on phone, becouse i just buy him
Without knowing the ROM, and at the risk of sounding like a tech support douche, maybe you should try a wipe/factory reset.

Hi,
I am new to dealing with the Android OS with my Galaxy Nexus, but I am thinking the same thing. My main concern is backing up and reinstalling all of my information, apps etc. I use Titanium backup pro for my backups but would like to know if my phone will be recognized when I try to reload all of my apps.
Thank you for your reply.

I have WiFi problems at my house. It shows that I am connected but no internet. I know is the router in my case.
I would test your WiFi somewhere else, such as Starbucks or Barnes and Noble.

Hi,
I have connection everywhere - Starbucks, home, Staples, Chapters/Indigo (Barnes and Nobles equivalent in Canada), even borrowing Wifi from unsecured home networks etc. but the disconnect is between the Wifi and getting my Internet to connect. Connection bars are all gray and at home very strong signal showing. This reminds me of connection problems I had with my laptops (running the MS OS of course), but in the Android OS I am a "newbie" and reading forums trying to figure what other people's connection problems are, and how they were solved.
There are no Wifi connection problems using my laptop (now) or my daughter's iPods, my wife's Blackberry Bold at home. My data works find, and I wish there was a roll back feature to the time just prior to the problem occurring last Thursday. My understanding is I have to completely restore my system, and this leads me to more questions about if I can reload all of my apps or if I will have to pay for them again. In the end, it may be faster.
I downloaded - per member recommendation - a Wifi analyzer and it shows that my home Wifi speed is excellent.
Thanks, I am always open to ideas to solve.
Do you know how to find the version of ROM on my Galaxy Nexus? I must look.

[Q] Push notifications delayed on WIFI

I've seen a few similar threads to the one I'm about to make. I've tried different suggestions which I will post here. Yet, none of them seems to work and I'm curious to see if anyone of you has a fix for my problem. My phone is an unbranded international HOX using the 9.7.2 ARHD rom by Mike1986. Here we go:
Problem
While being on WIFI my push notifications aren't coming through in time. There's a delay from anywhere between a few minutes up to as much as 40+ minutes. The phone doesn't have this issue being on the mobile data network. I'm also not 100% sure if the delay is still there when I'm on an different router. Even when I turn on the screen again, the messages seem to come in randomly.
Settings
WIFI best performance enabled
Static IP by router
WIFI sleep policy: Wifi always on
Tried suggestions
Wakelock: One thread described using an app called REGPON keep-alive, which installs a wakelock onto the phone to keep the data connection alive. This app did not do the trick. It only drained my battery and the messages still didn't come through.
Wifi performance: Set the phone to maximum wifi performance. This seemed to work for a while but ended up not working proper either
Kernel: Try a different kernel was one suggestion. I've switched from Stock to Faux123 010 kernel. This didn't change anything about the WIFI problem.
Static IP + Portforwarding + Disabling router Firewall: I've tried both port forwarding on port 5228 and even the range 5224-5228. I've also tried setting up triggered ranges. Maybe I'm doing something wrong on this part though. The router firewall is disabled and it should no longer block anonymous WAN packages.
Disable SmartSync: With the Suite Tools that are included in Mike1986's rom I've disabled Smartsync. No results as far as the wifi problem goes.
Probing app: I've tried an app that supposedly probes my router at least every minute in order to keep the connection alive.
Switching between b/g/n network: Didn't make a difference. The signal quality of the router is also good.
The only thing that did work for extended periods of time was using this remote control app that allows me to type through my PC keyboard, where the text ended up on the phone. I've also got an app installed to test push notifications. It's capable of making a log. Maybe that'll give you guys more information.
Right now I'm not sure if it's an issue with the HOX or if my router somehow stops the traffic. I don't recall having this problem on my HTC Desire. Does anyone have anymore tips?
Thanks,
Zendio
No problem with Gmail push notification on Stock 2.17.401.2.
Yesterday I still was on ARHD 9.7.2, also there I never noticed any delay.
Edit: this complies to various wifi networks (@home, @office, @parents etc.)

I am so sorry to hear you are affected by this problem, but also happy someone else is experiencing the exact same thing as I am !!!
I have tried different solutions to no avail.
Would love to hear something on this topic !!
Also I should note, I don't have any kind of task killer installed.
In general use WIFI feels really fluid and responsive. I really have no idea what could cause these problems.

I hope so. My One S is experiencing the same thing. I've tried everything above. No luck. Some stuff is fairly critical that I get it as soon as it comes in. I might try getting ahold of a Nexus 4 and do some testing with its wifi, just to make sure it isn't a general Android problem.
What router do you have? My issue was any android device in the house. Turned out it was my router, I put a custom firmware on it and all my trouble have gone away. My friend has the WiFi issue on a virgin media superhub.

I have an Asus RT-N66U. Funny you should suggest that. I'd planned to throw Tomato on it tonight and see how that works out. I did some tests at my folks' and their router had the same results. It's some cheap Netgear thing. Not sure of the model at the mo. I'll post back with results. If not tonight, tomorrow some time.
No go
Well that was unsuccessful. Actually it slowed things down. With the default firmware I get notifications from the instant I press power to wake up my phone. With Tomato there was a second or so before I got them.
Time to try DD-WRT tonight to see if that does the same thing.
I have an rt-n56u so the older version of yours and I'm running the Asus wrt that is being made, its fixed all my problems and is awesome tbh.

Set Beacon mode power safe (BMPS) to 0 in WiFi ???.ini config file should resolve this problem.
Such ???.ini config file usually placed under /system/etc/wifi or /system/etc/firmware/wlan/prima/

Wi-Fi unreliable

Recently I've been having problems with Wi-Fi. My phone and nexus 7. They both stay on blue bars all the time claiming they're connected to Google servers. And it'll work good for about 20 seconds and then I'll have no connection for about a minute. Bars will stay blue like its connected and WiFi show that it's fill signal but pages won't load, apps will timeout and YouTube videos won't stream. Makes it impossible to download any Roms or apps at times. This just recently started happening. Videos will stream good for maybe 2 minutes tops. Then pause, after a minute Wi-Fi will stay streaming and going again by itself and stream. I haven't changed my router or is settings. I have static ip's assigned too. All other computers work just fine for internet. Never a problem.
I've tried changing kernels, Roms, complete wipes and reinstalls. Rebooted the router. Nothing fixes it. I'm getting really frustrated. I'm at the point where I'm going trio go buy a new router just cause I want to use 5ghz. Anyways, any suggestions to solve this?

Weird how it affects just my device in an entire thread with a ton of people using the rom and same kernel.
I went and picked up a new router. I'll see if that fixes it. Thanks for the input though. I appreciate it.
Didn't help with new router. My WiFi still cutting out like crazy on Franco kernel. Almost as soon as I turn off screen. But its not turning WiFi off. Just goes into some sort of state where nothing comes through. When screen on everything is fine though now.
In Wifi settings, you could try unchecking "Avoid Poor Connections" and see if that helps.
Also do you have any other devices at home on the same wifi network - do they experience the same issues, I know where I am if we get a lot of rain, it causes intermittent internet slowdowns, I had similar issues and after testing other devices found this to be my problem not my Wifi.
Also, have you got any cordless phones in the house that might run on the same frequency?
I still have an issue keeping wifi at 100% d/l when the phone is asleep, even though the setting is for always on. It must be a hardware thing for me because every rom I've tried from ICS to the latest JB exhibit the same issue. If I am in a desperate need to d/l a large file on my phone, I just temporarily change the screen display off timer to 10 minutes of so so the wifi will stay at max d/l speed.

Edit I am on a galaxy nexus forum

Ya avoid poor connections is unchecked. And wifi optimization is unchecked. I've tried putting my router on full auto, tried setting static ip addresses for everything. Changing from wireless n to wireless g. Changing security to off as well. Using the 5ghz band instead of 2.4. The nexus 7 is working perfectly fine with the new router. But my galaxy nexus is totally unreliable. Weird is that it just started happening within past couple weeks. And actually, it was good for the first day or so after new router. I can confirm all other wifi devices jn the house work just fine without any hiccups. I've never had a problem with other devices. No dropouts or anything. It's really puzzling me!
One thing I found weird, if I disable wmm on my router, my nexus 7 and galaxy nexus will not connect. Anyone else get this?
I hope you also have your router firmware completely up to date.

Ya my router auto updates itself. Its a Cisco EA6500 in case your wondering and is helpful.
I use my wifi at work and it's very unreliable. At times going into an endless disconnect/reconnect loop. Sometimes restarting the wifi helps or putting it in and out of airplane mode. Other times nothing helps except a reboot of my phone. Some apps may make the issue worse. I don't think there is a fix and waiting for google to fix the flaw a user pointed out earlier.

Possibly a 4.2 issue. But its not affecting everyone it seems. But i see that there is a huge thread about this at the google site. Not an isolated case
When you say you set a static ip, you set one from the router, have you tried setting a static ip on the phones wifi advanced options as well?
Have you tried different radios?

I set static on both router and the phone. I've tried all the north american radios. None of the euro ones. no effect. Sticking to the latest North American radio for now. I've managed to make it work sorta with CM10.1 with stock kernel on completely fresh install. It works, but the down arrow on the Wi-Fi icon stays lit almost 100% of the time. no idea why, only other device that was on all yesterday was the nexus 7, and that was on the 2.4ghz and phone the 5ghz. Huge wlan_rx_wake!
It's likely this:

See if that sounds about right and if so, you'll just have to wait for a Google Patch.

When i first updated to 4.2, I was getting crazy dropouts. After unchecking the Wi-fi optimization, it was more consistent but still drops out frequently while at work. There is a known bug with the wifi driver that hasn't been addressed for years, but still trying to find the original articles describing the problems.
It seems you are having tons of issues, worse than most.
If you are having a problems suggested on this site, maybe this can help.

It affects me as well. Completely random. Everything appears fine except that instead of blue, the icons are grey. Turning off wifi and turning it back on fixes it.
In the link above, there is a comment where you can submit more info for Google to help solving the problem:

the weird thing is, it just started happening about 2 weeks ago. It was perfectly fine up until then. Never had an issue with Wi-Fi. If this don't work i might try doing an entire wipe right back to stock and locking bootloader.

[Q] losing wifi connectivity- full bars but all gray

so, I've read around here on the XDA forum about problems with wifi connectivity where we have full bars for wifi but they are gray and you are not getting out. many describe my situation but I've not seen any real solutions...
my problem is that I can connect to my wifi router without issue but then a random amount of time later, sometimes fairly quickly and sometimes it's hours later, I will pick up the phone and see full bars but they are gray and I'm not getting out. I can try opening a terminal window and pinging the gateway/dns servers and can't even reach the gateway.
things I have tried:
- turned off MAC filtering on the wifi AP
- switched from a 5 GHZ wifi on the AP to 2.4 GHZ net on the AP and vice versa
- manually set the phone wifi preference to one or the other (5 or 2.4)
- battery pull on the phone
- delete network settings for my AP and reconfigure
I have not yet tried a static IP config on the phone but I can easily try that... {edited to add} well, I tried static config and that didn't help at all...
one other tidbit of info, I have a work Blackberry with wifi and it never loses wifi connectivity so this is a problem unique to my Nexus.
I'm running Cyanogen 10.0.0-toro and no, I haven't tried a full wipe and reload yet.
thoughts or suggestions?
I'm not trying to threadjack here, but I just wanted to share my experiences.
I've been have the exact same thing happen to my phone (Nexus maguro). I've tried every JB rom I could find, several different kernels and my wifi eventually always goes grey on me. All network activities stop. I'm back on stock everything right now and it still happens.
It happens on my home wifi as well as work wifi.
I'm about to puttstock ICS on my phone and try that out for a couple days.
Anyway, good luck with your problems, i'm going to follow this thread in hopes you'll get a solution that may help me.
If I do figure anything out i'll post back.

seems that this is a topic that has been posted on a bit over time with no real single culprit or fix. I'll post back if I figure anything out... I know in the Cyanogen thread, I saw info that stated that the MAC address of the phone was changing and I'm going to try and determine if that is happening to mine.
I have the same issue. Sometimes even when i pick up the phone, if i look fast enough i see that the Wi-Fi bars weren't even there! Thats only 1 out of 5 times though. The other time its usually just grey bars. Sometimes it actually will click back and they'll flash to blue and grey 2-3 times and then go solid blue. Then sometimes like you, they'll stay grey. I've tried everything too...reverting to stock, Different kernels, ROMs, routers, static IP, 2.4 or 5ghz, full auto mode. The only fix that makes it a little more reliable, is using Wi-Fi PM Fast. But even that, is not reliable. I'd say its about 50% reliable then, for a huge sacrfice in battery life. For me i've noticed this started to happen with 4.2. Before that i never had a problem. All other devices though no problem. My Nexus 7 is just fine. But the galaxy nexus, no matter what router or where i am, the Wi-Fi is totally unreliable. For me, it happens within 2 minutes that it will disconnect most times. Then 1 in 10 times it'll be fine for 10 hours.
In all honesty, i've given up. Just come to deal with it. Use mobile networks when i'm not needing to download. I can download files and stream music just fine too. If there is traffic going through, it never disconnects. But when its just sitting there without traffic, it disconnects, or, loses connection to google servers i should say.
well that's not good to hear...
I installed stock 4.0.4 a couple days ago and have not had my wifi go grey on me yet.

yeah, I love Cyanogen so not willing to go back to stock... waiting for them to finish 10.1 and I guess I'll see how it behaves then.
Hi all,
Just to say that I have the same problem. I have been upgraded from ICS to 4.2 and nothing had happened but I had to downgrade to 4.1.1 (AOKP Build 4) due to other issues and after that I started notice the WiFi problem.
At first I thought it was when the screen went off, but I has happened with screen on too. I have to turn WiFi off and the back on to connect properly again, very annoying.
As I said I started noticing this after I downgraded, but then again, I had used AOKP 4.1.1 before without this issue. I think that it is time to change my phone :/

so, I've read around here on the XDA forum about problems with wifi connectivity where we have full bars for wifi but they are gray and you are not getting out. many describe my situation but I've not seen any real solutions...
my problem is that I can connect to my wifi router without issue but then a random amount of time later, sometimes fairly quickly and sometimes it's hours later, I will pick up the phone and see full bars but they are gray and I'm not getting out.

I'm on Muzzy 4.2.2 and I'm currently having the same problem. It's not a new problem since I remember having it months ago (disabled my phone's WiFi because I kept missing emails and other notifications - grew tired of dealing with it). I thought it was my router, so I swapped it with a newer one recently, but it carried forward (old router was TRENDnet Draft N and the new one is ASUS RT-N66U).
I would like to know how to properly troubleshoot this problem.
I'm glad I didnt have to create a thread for this. I have been facing this problem quite a lot. I can confirm that WiFi works absolutely fine until 4.1.2, whether it is stock or CM10 (I havent tried the other ROMs yet). I have faced this problem only from 4.2. It still exists on 4.2.2. Happens on all the ROMs I have tried till now including CM10.1 nightly as well as the stock factory image.
When the phone is sleeping, it seems to lose WiFi connectivity and when woken up, the WiFi bars is grey though it is full. If I am very lucky, it will turn blue automatically. Most of the times, I have to switch WiFi off and back on for it to connect properly.
Anyone knows the root cause for this? In case this has been discussed in any other thread?

have you posted this information over in any of the threads where the developers are working such as Cyanogen in an effort to bring this issue to the forefront for more visibility?
I have had those wifi problems with every android version and rom I had on my GNex as far as I can remember.
Sometimes it will be able to reconnect but sometimes I have to disable and re-enable wifi to get it back.
I too thought that it might have been my crappy router as I have had multiple problems with it over the years (some Linksys router).
This is really annoying because it won't receive any e-mails until I randomly decide to have a look at my phone. :/

trust me, I understand your frustration... some days, I can go almost all day without loosing wifi data throughput and other days it won't last 10 minutes without going to gray bars.
unfortunately, no one is sharing any fixes which tells me that no one has a good handle on the problem.
Same issue for me on stock Android 4.2.2. Leave WiFi on overnight and when I wake up its connected to WiFi but gray bars...

The update to 4.2.2 drivers have fixed all WiFi issues for me. For the first time since 4.1 I can now use WiFi optimization now. And WiFi is fully reliable.

same thing happened to me on toroplus sourcery 5.1, after trying everything i could think of and talking to one of the devs, i finally did a fresh download of rom and gapps. wiped cache, wiped dalvik, factory reset, wipe system, deleted android folder off of storage then installed the fresh download of rom and gapps and its been working great for me since. hope this helps.

Can you elaborate on this? I've flashed 5 different modems and still get this problem... it happens to my cell service bars, as well. Would love to know what the cause is.

i just know ever since moving to a 4.2.2 kernel that has the 4.2.2 drivers my wifi has been stable. I know there was a post in the anarkia thread with the ak kernel that had the drivers. but i believe most any 4.2.2 kernel would have them implemented. i do have the newest bootloader and radio too. but i know as soon add i got the 4.2.2 drivers all issues were resolved wifi wise. of course i think if you have a 4.2.2 kennel you'll have them.

I'm looking forward to that update - I've been watching the Cyanogen threads for when I think the 10.1 has matured enough to become my daily driver... good to know you've had positive results!
Temporary solution
me facing same issues , Solution would be to use an app called wifi fixer by zanish-g1 from the play store ...
it worked for me !! :good:

Seems like an issue for some, I have had zero issues with wifi calling. Maybe see if there is a different radio you can flash? Also, maybe use/try Google Voice.

There is a setting to auto switch to your data connection if the wi-fi signal is not strong / reliable that you can turn off. Try that.
this is a pretty serious issue that doesnt seem to be happening to many people.. its killing me right now it just dissconnects with no warning.. and it seems not many people are actually experiencing this.. im calling tmobile tomorrow to get a replacement to try and see if it is ok or not but im pretty pissed to get a refurbished unit for a phone i just a montha go

i wonder if this is a samsung thing or a T-Mobile thing? We've had Galaxy S3, S4, SII, Note 1. the only one that is "rock solid" is the Note 1 [Tmo version running mod'd stock rom, not JB].
We were able to get the S3 "much improved" but still has a relatively weak ability to maintain signal across multiple AP's or especially with Bridged WIFI AP's [it will "hunt" between physical devices and fail to deliver].
I would suggest you lookup any one of MANY threads on the topic with the S3 especially as there were people that worked hard at it on that one - lots of those deployed in the wild and a huge number had that issue.
turn off scanning.
turn off power management for the WIFI radio.
i wish there was a mod to turn off the network but that would probably kill the "calling" feature altogether. if it has a strong signal on the cell network it ain't going to do wifi calling period.
Data connection has nothing to do with WIFI calling. I use the note 1 a lot and rarely turn 'on' data. its happy on wifi no matter what.

Open up the dialer and dial *#0011#, then hit the hard menu button on the phone, choose wifi, turn off wifi power saving mode. This has been the fix for many of us for the time being.

Ya know I think it could be rom related, it seems like with all the international roms the wifi is great and I don't even have to turn off the power saving mode and never drop the wifi connection. With all the MI7 built roms it seems to drop wifi and have troubles. IDK maybe its just a fluke :fingers-crossed:
FWIW I had the same issue until I updated the firmware on my router.

That shouldn't have anything to do with this issue, it's the device. But seemingly coincidentally this worked for you.

You tried both options?
First
1. Navigate to System Settings
2. Connections > WiFi
3. Menu > Advanced
4. Uncheck "Allows Allow Scanning" and "Auto Network Switch"
Second
1. Dial *#0011#
2, Menu > WiFi
3. Power Saving Off
(Kudos to QuickVic30, I hadn't seen this before)
After doing both, you're still getting the problem?
if you have adblock plus definitely this is the problem, i had it for a while and noticed affecting my wifi. uninstalled issues gone! replaced it with adaway
I also had huge problems making WiFi calls, my router had auto update off, once I updated the router I have ZERO issues, so updating router firmware absolutely works for some people and it's relatively easy to do at least with home router. On the other hand when I switched WiFi power saving to OFF as suggested in other posts, it did absolutely nothing, except increased drain on my battery. I had 20% battery drain overnight (about 7 hrs) and my phone would go dead in less than 1.5 days even without being used. After I changed that setting back, now my battery drains 3% over night and lasts me 2 days with moderate use and has still 60% power left. I do realize different people may have different issues and therefore different fixes, but updating firmware of your router does work in many cases, no question about it and the old firmware didn't affect at all my 2 laptops, couple tablets and 2 Galaxy S3, only Note3 had the issue, so it is hard to believe, but it WORKS. And the power drain that I suspect switching "wifi power save" to off created for me, is beyond reasonable, so maybe people should be aware of it as well.

My Verizon note 3 that I switched over to t-mobile over a year ago, suddenly started to drop all wifi connections. After a brief connection it rescans then drops. I read your thread and when I dial *#0011# , im assuming you mean "call" there is no menu for wifi. What is the dialer? The phone keypad? Any help is greatly appreciated.
