[Q] My beloved two-year-old phone died... - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bid farewell to my old time buddy(My Desire HD) the other day, it got doused with a bubble solution... I tried blow-drying it for 15 minutes to dry out the battery slot & removed the sim/sdcard cover to dry it again, but can't revive my DHD. The bubble solution seeped in between the screens.
Is there anything I can do to revive it?
*The phone generally turns on screen, lights up
*LED stays on green no matter what or how long it's been on
*The phone vibrates 5-short-consecutive times after turning it on
*I haven't tried to hook it up on the charger because of fear that it might fry or short circuit some of the other "Still working" components of the phone

Bag of rice for a day.
My Atrix got soaked with soap and I bagged it for a day or 2 and it dried it all out.

Will try, thanks for the suggestion.

Remove the battery first. Even if you don't have it hooked up to power, the battery's juice can still short your phone. And don't try to turn it on.

My only remaining problem now is the screen which is not displaying anything other than a blurred out HTC splash screen.

Dry out the screen

Id leave it to dry in rice for a day longer.
Then, if you were comfortable in doing so, you could disassemble the phone and try using a hair dryer to dry the screen and other parts. (obviously take out the battery before doing anything, in fact take it out now so it doesn't blow or anything)

Bag of Rice is a pretty nice idea...keep ur DHD in it for 2-3 days for better effect

Water damage, is it dead?

Hi all,
My GF has a G2. A few days ago she put it in her cup holder in her car. There was a few mm of water from a degraded fast food cup in the cup holder. She told me that the water might have reached the earphone.
We let the phone dry out for 48hrs and put the battery back in. Initially it worked for about 6hrs with no problems but when she came home from work the phone would only boot into the bootloader. Once in the bootloader I can not select any options nor turn the phone off. Taking the battery out is the only option, but when it's put back in we go back to the bootloader.
I have attached a picture of the bootloader screen. You can see there is some striation on the bottom of the screen. This striation is at the opposite end from where the phone touched the water.
1. is the striation normal? (think I know the ans to that one but...)
2. Can I try anything to get the phone up and running?
3. Would it be worth a warranty replacement call? The White dot behind the battery is still white, but I think the screen could be a give away to water damage.
Looks like water trapped under the screen. Water could have run from one end of the phone to the other, especially if you held it back upright while water was still inside. Or it could have re-condensed in a different spot from where it was submerged.
If water is still trapped under the screen, its obviously not completely dry. I would try to dry it more, you can try the trick of placing the phone in a bag of uncooked rice, or chemical dessicant packs (like the kind some items come packed with that say "do not eat") to help pull the water out of the phone. 2 days does not seems like enough time, if you just tried just air drying it without one of these tricks. Power off until you are more sure the phone is dry, or you are just doing more damage.
Rice is your best bet right now. It can work wonders.

Rice trick is your best bet. Might be too late now. Should have never turned it back on, and if it was on at the time, should have shut it off immediately till you consulted xda. At least you will know for next time! Good luck! Fyi you didn't need to blur that stuff out.

[Q] Dropped my DHD in water. Please Help!

I Just dropped my DHD in toilet. However I managed to pull out the battery in less than 10 seconds. Is there any hope. Have no courage to put the battery back in .
Please advise.
Hey dude.
Put your phone in a bowl of rice and place that in your airing cupboard or somewhere really warm for a couple (2) days, 48 hours.
Do not keep going back to check it, just leave it alone.
After the 48 hours check your phone, if you see no obvious water retention then take the plunge and power it up.
If it still seems to have water in it, put it back in the rice and warm place for another day.
Hope this helps.
Greg.

I had the same problem once with my nokia e66. It was completely wet after falling into a river during a canoe tour. I dried it in rice and it worked for the moment. After a while caused by corrosion on the board it won't charge. So i dissembeled it and put the board into isopropanol until the fluid evaporated. After that i cleaned the board with a soft toothbrush and reassembled the phone. From that point i never had a problem again.
So you got two options. Wait if phone gets strange behaviour and risk a heavier damage or dissemble it directly and put the board into isopropanol.
For me it worked fine! Good Luck!
look on youtube there is a lot of movies that will show you what to do its importent that you do it very quick....
Today, After keeping belowed DHD in rice bowl for 2days and gathering all my courage I managed to insert the battery. Then before even pressing any buttons, It vibrated once and stopped. Then I pressed power button and was not responding. I tryed pulling out the battery and then reinserted and pressed power button again. turned on with a vibration followed by bootscreen. after few minutes the lock screen appeared. I tried unlocking but was not responding to my touch. OMG. My touch screen is gone.
what to do next?
It's mashed if the touch has gone you can repair it yourself..videos are about

You should clean it with alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol (used for circuits)
It's the safest way.
Get a brush and alcohol from your nearest hardware store and you'll be set.
Clean it thoroughly and it will probably be back in working condition instantly.
I've done it tons of times with water damaged phones.
Not severe salt-water damage though.

Fix screen?

Hey guys I just have a quick question.
So my brother dropped his phone in a poodle awhile back and now screen won't turn on, he put it in rice for a while but it won't turn on.
The phones led light still works,
And it still vibrates, the soft keys turn on a little but not much.
Is their any way to fix it without replacing the screen or is it a goner?

In a poodle? Poor dog.
After the phone was retrieved from the water was the batter pulled immediately? Was the phone in the rice without the battery in it? How long did you leave it in the rice?
You could try using a hair dryer. If this does not work the phone is probably a lost cause.
Changing the screen won't fix it .The water probally ruined the circuit board if it doesn't dry out an start working.

Galaxy note 2 fell in water

HELPPPPP Basically it slid in the sink because the surface was unsually slippy and as soon as it dropped in water
i took it out literally 7 seconds or less while their was water in their :/
i tried shaking the phone then putting the battery and case off trying to dry it then put it back on and the screen went yellowish and then went completely black now i cant even see the screen i dont really wanna buy a new phone i got it november aswell and really want to try fix this
You shouldn't have to insert battery or switch on device at least for 24 hr
Still remove battery, use hair dryer to dry it completely but with cool hair and let it remain open for a day
Shake in between and try drying carefully.
May be soon you will get advice to keep in dry rice, a typical myth. Don't know how much it will help.

Isn't it because rice drains water (even as far as draining water from air, which is why you should keep rice in dry environments)
My girlfriend dropped hers in the toilet the other day. I took the thing apart and blew out as much moisture as I could with pressurized air, then left it alone for a day. It works fine now.

The rice thing does have some validity, it worked on my fiances iPod after a trip through the washing machine anyway.
Unfortunately OP, turning it on so soon was a mistake and probably caused more damage than the water itself. I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Rice has starch, it pulls water towards itself. Surprised you dont know this.

Take the battery out, keep the battery cover off and place the phone on a bag of rice for at least 24 hours and let the rice draw the moisture away from the phone.

Rice isn't a magic bullet, but it can certainly help very much.
I dropped too
Hello there. I dropped my Note 2 yesterday into the sink for a 7-10 seconds:crying:. It is almost the same story. I took apart the whole mobo and put it into the rice for 24 hours. Today I tried it and it worked for 30 minutes without any problem. Than I decided to run Quadrant and at the end of the test the screen went first yellowish than all blank. I didn't want to force it so I removed the battery and put it into rice again.
I wonder what happened with yours. Is it working now, did you get replacement of something?
Your answer is appreciated!:good:

Water damage question

Hello! My M9 got some water in it last night when I was drunk, luckily it wasn't fully submerged, and had a case on it, but it still got into the charging hole. I shook out all the water I could and was dumb and tried to charge it, it got to the battery charging screen so that's good, however there were crackling noises. I left the phone upright all night and am using my space heater to try to dry it more.
Should I buy isopropyl alcohol and soak the phone in it? There's no way I'm going to be able to disassemble the phone because it's practically impossible so I was wondering if dipping the whole thing would be a good idea or no.
Umm.. No.
Put it in a bag of rice (uncooked) for a day or 2.

I second that, put it in a bag of rice. Somewhere warm and dry. The rice wil draw the moisture out of the phone.
While IPA is fast evaporating and electronic friendly it still needs to be exposed to the air to evaporate properly without leaving a residue

speaking from experience, the m9 isnt as bad as whats been made out. i bought the ifixit iopener kit and the tools made it straight forward. just a delicate and time consuming effort with the sticky tape they used.
I dropped the bottom edge of mine in a mug of tea 2-3 months ago (2" submerged for a second or 2). No immediate problems but the last few weeks I've had backlight issues. the backlight cable to the screen had liquid remaining in it causing backlight issues. you could probably dry it out by getting to step8: https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/HTC+One+M9+Teardown/39166. M9 teardown gets trickier once you need to remove the battery. fwiw, the backlight cable seems to be the cable with '...00031' on it, at the top right of this picture: https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/Y5J4Lk1jLQvsSYmQ.huge. liquid was stuck between the back side of that cable, and the other flexible cable it was soldered to which should not need any further dismantling of the phone.
atleast getting this far, you'd be able to confirm exactly how much liquid has entered the phone and if you need to dry out any other connections to avoid future problems.
I left mine in rice for a little over 2 days and it worked fine after. Just left a little spot you can barely see when the screen is fully black
