[Q] 1, EFS backup. 2, Jedi Master 9 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hi everyone. I have two questions actually.
1.,
It was probably asked a million times but anyhow I have been trying to find the answer I can't find it.
If I do a nandroid backup from CWM, will it back up my EFS? Sorry if this question has been asked a lot but I want to know for sure.
2.,
If I am running rooted LL4 with Bullet kernel and LK8 modem (see attached screenshot), am I good to simply flash the Jedi Master 9 from CWM? I am very scared from bootloop since I have screwed up my LJ1 Note 2 about a month ago, lost my IMEI and EFS. If it is so, please somebody PM me with a really good instruction of what is supposed to be done once I am in CWM. If not, please explain me what has to be done in order to be able to flash that ROM.
Thank you all, any help is apreciated.

Bump. Please somebody. It should be an easy to answer question. :/
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app

There's a search engine that'll yield answers to both your questions.
With the above out of the way...
1. CWM doesn't backup the /efs partition, TWRP can.
However you also need an NV items backup.
2. As long as the ROM you're trying to flash doesn't include a modem, you should be good to go.

Check out app Andromizer, backs up efs too.

Nandriod...

what is it, where can i find it, why can't I find it anywhere on market or google? is it better than clockwork backup/restore?
I assume you are trying to make a nandroid backup? This can be done thru clockwork recovery. It is making a backup of the NAND, or flash memory in which the system/data is stored on.
Haha

We were all new at some point guys...
To the OP:
1: Boot into Clockwork Recovery.
2: Go down to Backup And Restore
3: Press Backup.
4: Wait about 3minutes til it completes.
Thats what they call a Nandroid Backup. Its not an app or anything like that.
We make Nandroid backups incase we mess up our phones, we just restore it if were able to get into clockwork.
If you dont have Clockworkmod installed, go to the sticky in Android Development for the Epic and follow the guide.
PM me if you need any more help than that. I remember being a noob as well.

so to sum it up, if you're planning on jumping from rom to rom to theme to kernel,
having a nandroid backup is like using a condom.
which you should, cuz u never know.
Stay in school.
Lol I know what clockwork backup and restore is.....just didn't know it was the same as a nandroid backup. Thanks.... -the noob

Yup, if you go to backup and restore you can see it says "Nandroid" at the top of the screen. Hence Nandroid Backup.

Always, always make a full backup prior to making any "major" change (rom, kernel, theme). I archive my backups on my server to keep from cluttering up the sd card and only carry the last backup on the sd.
You can also restore just data or just cache if you do a full wipe (i.e., for a rom flash) and don't want to deal with titanium (advanced restore) - saved my ass on a couple bad downloads/beta roms.
Also, welcome to the wonderful (and addicting) world of modding

addiction is definitely the right word. probably tried at least 7 roms. finally settled on the quantum rom with dk17 modem. works great! wish it was a little faster though.

Formatting system...?!?

I used to format /system every time I flashed a ROM on my gs2, but I saw in the numerous imei threads some posts about not doing so because it may be part of the lost imei issues. Do you do it ? Have you had issues ? I'm reluctant to do so , but feel it will be " beneficial to my flashing" if I did...

No lie I formatted my system the other day and right after tried to revert to a stock android backup that I made. And wasn't able to do so because it told me M.D.5 sum mismatch after I reverted to it earlier in the day. Huh is what I was like and after that clockwork mod recovery would let me restore a cm10 backup I made said something about couldnt restore system. So out of frustration I went back to being unrooted. Just couldn't take the problems with clockwork mod because that's what where the problems ly. It wasn't me it was the recovery

None what so ever. I really just flashed the stock back up right before I flashed my gsfree back up so no I made no changes what also ever. Some times when you format systems in clockworkmod recovery this could happen because it happen to me. Can't wait till ext4 touch recovery comes to us here in this forum. Not saying cwm recovery isn't nice but I never had any problems with other recoveries that have been offered.

There are ways to fix that issue with the MD5 sum mismatch. I've had it happen a few times and ran a few commands thru ADB and got it working.

Yes you are right. But I didn't want to go thru all of that. Really didn't have time so just unrooted my phone so there would be no more problems. I get like alot of people and become flash aholics. So I just stop it from being problem later down the road. Look I like rooting and adding mods to my phone like the next guy but there comes to a point where unnecessary issues can be avoided. Like the one I had.... but on the real tip I really enjoy the phone just the way it is STOCK I have zero issues and love the battery life that I have. So until some cooler roms come out I just don't have interest in cm9 or cm10 base roms. I mean I came from the sensation where I could flash a lot more variety of roms. I like this phone the way it is and really that's why I bought it.

CWM 6027 Touch from ATT forum

Alright....so alittle history. kc_exactly is to blame and to thank for this. He just got me thinking. Especially with people starting to test the JB port from houstonn. Which only flashes with CWM.
Disclaimer: You do this at your own risk!! Can't blame anybody but yourself if it messes things up!
I installed sk8erwitskil's Touch CWM 6.0.2.7 v14.4.7 from the ATT forums here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34567118&postcount=1.
I wanted to see if it would work as kc had said in a post earlier. And it did and does!!! CWM backup works using .tar. I haven't tried dedup yet.
So what's the purpose of this post you ask? Well, from what I've found out so far, we can install CWM, create a backup using .tar which is default, and restore with it. In "mount and storage" I formated system, data, cache. In advanced, I formated dalvic cache. Pretty much wiping out the phone and it restored just fine. Actually 4 times so far.
So, and again, part of this has been said by kc_exactly, if you keep TWRP, AND CWM6027 recoveries, your ROM of choice, and backups in both TWRP and CWM on your Internal storage you'll be able to bounce back and forth testing the JB port or whatever else will require CWM.
I've done this multiple times now and it's worked everytime!!!
Make a TWRP backup
Install CWM 6027, reboot to system
reboot to recovery and make a CWM backup using .tar
That's it!!
Now each time you want to use a different recovery, just install it, reboot to recovery and restore your backups.
Maybe this is old news, or even a "No sh*t Sherlock" thing. But our CWM had too many issues, and I'm really liking sk8erwitskil's Touch version. And it seems to be working well. I was in CWM for at least 10min straight and it never got hot.
It does have somewhat of a learning curve, so make sure you read sk8's instuctions on the first 2 posts.

If I'm reading the thread correctly, the idea is that you make a backup including the recovery so you can switch back and forth at will.

I'm not sure if this is a question, or a comment? So I'll take it as a question.
You are correct. It's been working great for me so far. I'll bet I've restored over 20 times now and it's worked great. I've put it through all its paces and it's worked fine. I've tested and played with houstonn JB and I gotta say I really like JB!
So from what I can tell, we can use this recovery, and do whatever we want. Play with JB for a while, then switch back to ICS.

This is an older recovery. And the wifi has to do with the ROM, more than likely. Go to the TWRP thread or the root guide, under Working Recoveries. There you'll find the newest recoveries. KK included.
Then go to the ROM thread that you flashed and your answer is probably there. If not, ask there.

Why you flashed manually with Mobile Odin? The recommended method is to let PmR use the Custom Recovery to flash the MOD. Which recovery do you have installed on your phone? CWM, TWRP?

As a last resort, you can try Kies to return to official, unrooted, stock Sammy-blessed state. :cyclops:
And start flashing again, afterwards!

I recommend titanium backup or same other compare to nandroid.
Nandroid push you back to original state while you want to test mods and roms, titanium will be much helpful to restore data on cross roms.

TWRP seems to be working pretty well, but do i have to extract the folder and back it up on my desktop in case of another full wipe?
TWRP restores everything including desktop but remember it will be same as on day you have created nandroid. Subsequently changes won't have in it.

Oh that's cool! So it really just screenshot the entire phone and restores back to when it was made?
Side note, each backup is almost a GB big, won't it eat up a lot of memory on your phone? As such, which options are best to select when using twrp? (eg efs, data, system)

Efs is just 20mb, needs when you have messed up imei, it is must in my point of view even if you don't want nandroid backup
data is backup of installed applications
System is ROM, which needs to recover device when you have got something wrong.

My phone acting extremely weird HELP!!!!

So i decided to go from illusion to stockaroma v2 and once i got the phone setup it said i was running low on storage space so later on i rebooted my phone and i got android.phone has crashed blabla
Upon rebooting it kept crashing and crashing so i decided to wipe and reflash stockaroma but funny thing is everytime id wipe and start over I'd get same settings apps and stuff already preloaded as if cwm wasnt even wiping i tried couple times reflashing the rom didnt work..
So i decided to restore my backup now when i went ahead to do that o couldn't because it was saying there is no files ? And i flashed a rom i had on my sdcard but even tho i wiped i got some stuff preloaded which is not normal ? And now i got like 7 times the same directory it looks like this : sdcard/emulated/0/0/0/0 ??
Everything is messed up and down i do not want to go through odin since i have a damn slow computer which shutdowns by its own now imagine me flashing and it crashes...
So my question is how may i restore my backup ? I have like many "0" directory just not sure which one to delete as each contains different file ??
Please help me out im not a noob but this is the first time ive seen this

Sorry but Odin seems to be your best bet or go buy an external sdcard and reader (as I've advertised on all forums before). This is also why we say to update your recovery to the latest one constantly, in many threads and most OP posts of most roms. Good luck. Also always having a backup of all your contemts on memory is recommended before messing with flashing ROMs. Live and learn.

I say live and learn cause you didn't have thing backed up like you should and you made a mistake. I've yet to see anyone have duplicate /0 for that reason and I'm pretty sure that wasn't the cause. Its cause you weren't on the latest or even up to date to handle 4.2.2. I never said you weren't careful but in lots of the threads including illusion my post and Ramsay's, I think, says make sure you have updated your recovery and backup your sdcard contents. Just saying and its a friendly heads up, also advised you on external sdcard. No need to be defensive, just giving pointers and helping, bud.

In TWRP there's an option to only wipe internal sd if you want to try that.
Or maybe if you Odin the stock firmware it'll kill the symlink or whatever is holding it there. Then try to delete.
Or factory reset?

Use Odin and switch to the latest twrp, lots of ppl have been having issues with cwm lately as its not updated with the latest flashing scripts and such, most cwm recoveries can't handle preload or wipe everything needed for 4.2 roms, try twrp and u shouldn't have anymore issues...

Isn't there a way you can extract specific data from them? Never had to myself but I swear I've seen it mentioned somewhere.

(In TWRP) Restore>Advanced>Select the partitions you want to restore
There is a similar option in CWM6 (at least there was last time I used it on my old phone) but I don't remember the specifics.

Yeah, that's an option in both, but I was referring to the ability to just pull a certain app and data out of one of those partition backups.
