Having a hard time on CM10.1 or TW ROM ? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Just got my Note 2 a week ago, I have tried like six different ROM's, won't name names, but they were all very good. We are lucky to have such good developers on our ATT Note 2.
But now I can't settle on which type of ROM I like, Touchwiz based, or CM10.1 AOSP based ? What is your opinion ?
I like the TW ROM's, for being stock, and having the awesome S-Pen Stylus features, and fantastic battery life, but I hate the stock TW Messaging app, and sock TW Dialer/Contacts, and they all seemed just a tad choppy, or little bit of tiny lag, once in awhile. i tried some of the mods for AOSP messaging, but they all seem to have an issue, not 100% ready for daily driving yet.
Now the CM10.1 ROM's were crazy fast, super smooth, but at the cost of battery life, being almost 1/3rd that of TW ROM's, not terrible battery life, no, just not as good as Touchwiz battery. But AOSP looks really good, and I love the group messaging and vanilla text app, it works perfectly. And the AOSP Dialer & Contacts are my favorite. But with CM10.1 no S-Pen widgets or good Stylus features. But I LOVE the group message and quick reply in CM10.1, which works 100% perfectly. Why didn't Samsung allow quick reply in JB Touchwiz, and no group messaging either ? WTF Samsung
What do you prefer and why ?

Ya I jump between AOKP and CM10.1 settled on CM10.1 for now. I just like the interface and being able to be in 240dpi. As for spen I use papyrus. does what I need. The ROM size is great between 130 Mb to 200 Mb depending on the ROM. Saves space for internal storage and all. To me AOKP and CM10.1 are nice, snappy and elegant. I like sophisticated simplicity and a dark theme. Love being rooted so I can do what I want with my phone. It's only getting better. Pulse I get to run Jellybean 4.2

Are you running stock CM10.1 Nightly ?
How do you set the DPI to 240 ?

You can edit your DPI in build.prop to 240 or run Jellybeer he has a great DPI changer with DPI groups.

Thanks, so for me a newb, how do I edit that ? Can I use Root Explorer to do that ?
And what is your opinion on 240 DPI for the Note 2 ? That seems like a popular size from what I read all over the Note forums. I am daring and just edited that file with text editor through Root Explorer. Let's see what happens after a reboot ? OMFG
UPDATE; yep that worked Thanks to Nova launcher I can custom the icon size @ 110% looks a little better at 240 DPI, and then in System - settings changed font size to large. Both those changes make 240 look really good to me. Does 240 effect performance at all ?

in 240 dpi you have more screen space to put it simply you can have 6 rows and 5 colums for your icons in the app drawer and the homescreen.
just change ro.sf.lcd_density=320 to 240
Only issue is that some apps like phone.apk put the search bar at the top enstead of the bottom that is why I use jellybeer I can put systumui in a 280dpi group and that solves the issue.
That's why I like CM10.1 and AOKP you have lots of options from developers. Your not tied down by what samsung wants you to use. You can make changes.

I actually really love the 280 DPI setting, things look a little smaller, which is good, but @ 240 DPI it changed too much.
is cool we can change the DPI so easily on CM101., just one setting Root Explorer, reboot, and all done, looks great. No issues whatsoever.

Density question

Hey guys quick question. I just came off of MIUI and came back to Calkulin and I noticed a big difference in what I believe is the density. The phone looked a lot nicer on MIUI. What is the best way to change the density for this phone and what is the best setting? What programs or apps will get messed up as a result?
Look up "LCD Density Modder Pro" to manage screen density. I had issues with Market previously and my screen density was a non-standard 209. I personally use HDPI (240) as my density now with no issues.
240 is what comes stock on our phones..I'm currently running 200 and I love the smaller, neater look..going back to 240 makes it look like a kids toy to me..some apps won't look right..the dialer and calculator being some of them..I use exdialer and I really like it over stock

Ported Touchwiz ClockPackage.apk v2.4 working on ICS and JB

TouchWiz Stock Clock app
New Holo Themed version from Gyebro
To anyone interested, Gyebro has put together a Holo themed version of my clock package, he has put a lot of work into it too, there are a lot of visual fixes and it looks and runs great on 4.1.2.
Check out his thread
[PORTED][APP][HOLO] Holo themed TouchWiz ClockPackage
And a bunch of screenshots here
If you like it, head over to his page and hit thanks
***New Update 22th September 2012***
This is a ported touchwiz clock from the Samsung stock roms. It is tested and working on ICS roms and most Jelly Bean roms. This app has been tested in 240dpi (as it is designed for) and 210dpi, tested in English and French. Any graphical problems you might experience are a direct result to changing the dpi, I will not be accepting requests to change the visual layout of the app because as it is it is completely stock and working perfectly for 240dpi (the intended dpi for this phone)
This app is fully functional except for;
1. the map for the world clock (the world clock is working thought)
2. the popup notification notification that tells you your alarm will go off in X hours and X minutes
3. the color of what you have selected in the snooze options (you will be able to see what is selected in the main alarm screen
apart from these minor details everything else is working. Please do not post to tell me about these things, I already know.
I have added languages from all app versions that I could get my hands on. All the usual languages are included, I have recently included Hebrew and Arabic? as requested. If your language is not supported please tell me, and if possible send me a clockpackage.apk from a stock rom with your language (one that you are sure your language is included in)
This clock app is SGS3 themed where possible. See screenshots below.
I have also included a v2.4 +extras zip, this includes the Samsung digital clock widget (SGS3 themed), the Samsung Accuweather widget with transparent background, the Samsung memo app, and ThinkFree Office app.
If you dont want these extras please use the other zip - v2.4
If I have helped you at all, please hit the thanks button
or feel free to buy me a beer / donate
Please test it before you use it!
I will not be held responsible for people who wake up late and lose their job, or miss a flight, etc.
I wont be held responsible for people bricking their phones by doing dumb stuff, just follow the instructions.
Instructions
Copy to zip file to phone SDcard, reboot into CWM and flash, reboot, enjoy
If you are using a previous version of this clock apk please --> backup and delete the old file (HybridTWClock******.apk) from your /system/app folder and then install the new zip in CWM
If you are using CM9 or CM10 or a rom that already has a clock app (deskclock.apk), please note that you do not need to delete the existing clock app for this one to work, - but if you do delete the existing deskclock.apk this one will still work as a stand alone clock

Cheers, will give it a whirl to see if it works on newer M5 AOKP builds
EDIT: My god, i love you, it works perfect on Hydra 1.0.3 based on AOKP M5.... this was exactly what i was looking for
Nice one It works. But is it possible to fix the popup indicator?
I love ics but missed the TW clock/alarm/timer - thank you.
Just letting you know that so far it has worked well with Task's AOKP ROM on my Galaxy S2
Fantastic made. Working like a charm on Aokp Roms!!
But could you do it. Also multi dpi usable? Would be soooooooo nice!

Works like a charm on Stock ROM too!!
This saved my day cuz it fixed the "accidentally-restored-from-GB" Issue (FC on setting new alarm).
Bonus, it's themed like i like it ;-) Great job!!
Swyped from my GT-I9100 using XDA App.
Well, it's working on ParanoidAndroid too http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1580070
A big thanks for this one!
but one minute i thought it was the original clock (alarm) from the galaxy SII (latest ics stock roms) but it isn't
but hey, it's better than the aopk version....
maybe you can also find a way to do the very same with the galaxy sII clock? that's realy a beauty
Edit: I saw your other tread about this, and i hope you will manage to port the touchwizz calendar also! Great job!
Thanks, this seems to work well on my Galaxy Note (GT-N7000) running CM9.
I run my Note in tablet mode so the usual DPI incompatibility as with most TW apps is there. But I like the functionality so don't care to much about these layout distortions.

There is a thread for TouchWiz Calculator & Clock Apps for Galaxy Nexus from XanSama here
I think the screen layout should be the right size for galaxy note, and from what I've read its fully functional too, I'm not sure about the calendar though
Try it and see
Works on

Awesome, working on task650's AOKP for SGSII. Was missing my timer/stopwatch terribly.
Would this allow svoice to properly set alarms or do we need an entire framework?

This alarm is working with Svoice on my galaxy SII (paranoiddroid)
yes, it is working for me too with s-voice on the i9000 with this clock app
Fantastic! That is the only thing svoice wasn't doing for me....
Do I need to delete the old clock.apk from /system/app first?
EDIT: Clearly not Can I if I want to on CM9 without causing problems though?
Also - any easy way for me to resize this for 182dpi?
Yeah, you don't need to delete the old deskclock app, but you can if you want to, it will still work.
Changing the size... I'm not so sure, but there is another thread here with the screen size setup for the galaxy nexus / galaxy note. I'm not sure what that will give you if you change your dpi, it might work out though.
Just to clarify, I do still get a force close when setting the alarm with s-voice, but the alarm does still sound at the right time.

Ah I had this setting the alarm before but force closing. I was hoping that this would actually open - guess we need the framework for that then.
Thanks dude worked like a charm. Only slight cropping problem at the bottom? Glad someone attempted this port. Looking forward to anything else up develop.

Get FC when i try to activate any alarm on Hydra H2o 1.2.1
I'm running AOKP [ROM][IMM76I][25May]Online●●●●►►Omega v4.0◄AOKP Build-37►Android 4.0.4●►Omega Files◄
In /system/app I don't have clock.apk, but deskclock.apk. Even if I delete/rename the deskclock.apk or not, installing clockpckage zip in cwm doesn't do any difference, the new clock is not there.
LE: I installed this app the hard way. I installed system\app\HybridTWClockBastardv2.1_signed.apk, then I copied I copied alams and ui tones to \system\media\audio\.

[Q] do any Density / resolution modifier app work?

I've tried the LCD Resolution app on my ICS 4.0.4 Arc S and the layout of the menus etc were pretty messed up. do any of those apps work well on the Arc S? and if so which one and whats a good dpi setting to use to improve the visual experience?
Sometimes you'll have to experiment with numbers 1-9 on the dpi scale. Example I'm at 240dpi, in order for my stuff to look correct I need to set the rest of my dpi on a 3. So example, my usual dpi will be 163dpi. If I do anything other than 3 besides 240 mg screen and information will be messed up.
Edit : Certain launchers will also make a difference as they may be specified to work at the original dpi or be flexible to a new dpi.
Edit2 : Sometimes certain roms don't like dpi, a few sense and ics roms here on the Droid Incredible have issues with the dpi, if I got below 200, sense and ics roms cause certain things to stretch or stay the same dpi even though its a new dpi. Example, sense lock screen gets smaller and does not fit the screen so its off. I try to avoid using dpi on sense because of this and many other reasons, AOSP is a great place to use dpi.

Because using dpi messes the market up I use LCD Density Modded Pro. It allows you to get items from the market your android can't normally find.

Want stock but don't want to ditch certain CM/PA features? Read here

I've wanted to change my phone back to touchwiz for a while now but could never do it because I really liked the QuickReply feature of CM10, the per app DPI settings of PA, and being able to natively tether in CM based roms. I've finally found some solutions that will let me keep these features even in a stock JB touchwiz rom. Note that I did not develop any of these -- all I'm doing is compiling these useful features into one place.
SMS with QuickReply: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2103108
Per App DPI Settings: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2106060
Native Tethering / Remove data throttle cap: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2057344
For the DPI Settings, the app does not contain something for default DPI, so I just changed that in the build.prop for that. You can do that by navigating to /system/ in a root explorer and opening up build.prop and changing the line "ro.sf.lcd_density=320" to your desired default DPI. You might have to change permissions to edit it, but be sure to change the permissions back to what they were before after you're done.
If you change your default DPI to something other than 320, you should change the per app DPI for Contacts and Clock (and some other apps) back to 320 so that you don't need to look for a modded version that doesn't look weird. I've tried searching for one before, but none of them really worked for me so I decided to leave them at 320 DPI.
I'm using Wicked v6 JB rom as a base which already has the tethering stuff applied, so that simplified things a lot for me. Thanks to all the great devs who have made all this possible!
The only thing I'm really missing now is having phablet style System.UI (I prefer that dropdown bar style better) so if anyone has any idea how to change this, please share!
I hope that this helps some of you who want to make the switch go through with it.
This is exactly whats on my mind at this moment! Thank you for this write up

[tip] Change your DPI for a better experience.

So I was on Slim Bean AOSP ROM while I wated for the latest version of JB Domination theme. One thing I loved about that ROM was that the DPI was set to 256 by default and it was awesome.
I mean I got back to stock and it was at 320... like comeon its soooo huge.
So I would suggest you guys to try it out. Set the lcd density to 256 in build.prop and then used xposed framework to re-set samsung stock apps to 320 DPI. (Cam, Contacts and Calculator). You might need to freeze the Samsung Keyboard in Titanium Backup before you change DPI as it'll keep crashing.
Don't ask me how to do this, just a tip for those who know how to get around it.
I think this thread isn't so useful. Why? Cause every person has different methods of making their phone comfortable. Whether they like default view or the smaller fonts for those who have sharp eyes.
