Hey everyone!
I just came over from the n900 camp.
I bought the new Captivate Glide (SGH-I927) yesterday (from Rogers), and I'm loving it so far. It is my first Android phone, though I also have a rooted Iconia Tab a100.
I'm a *nix administrator and hope to be able to contribute something useful to this community.
At the moment, I'm trying to get root, but it looks like I'm the only person in the world with this device, so far. I've tried a few things, but I'm cautious as it seems Samsung hasn't released the stock firmware yet (annoyingly).
Patience, I know. Anyway, if anyone is interested, here are the phone details:
Android 2.3.5
Baseband: I927RUXKJ5
Kernel: 2.6.36.3
Build number: GINGERBREAD.RUXKJ5
If anyone's curious to know more about it, ask away.
If I do manage to find the firmware or get root, I'll post it here.

Trying, but I'm having a hard time getting ADB working under Windows. It's running in a virtualbox VM, so I guess that may be the problem. Still working on it.

Nope. First Android phone.
I'm hoping ICS will make its way to this one eventually... right now I'd just settle for root.
Keyboard is okay. n900's was better. Performance is, well, for an ex-n900 user, unbelievable.
Got my Samsung Glide on Sunday at the AT&T store. They only received two of them and I was lucky enough to get one. I am coming from a Sony X10 which I rooted with Super One Click. I am afraid to do Super One Click on the Glide until others with more knowledge give it a try.
This phone is so much faster and the camera is 1,000 times better (even though the X10 was 8.1 MP).
The keyboard is why I bought it and so far, LOVE the phone!!! Would love it even more if rooted, so hopefully others have luck rooting it.

Tried SuperOneClick; no luck. Looks like the kernel we're running is actually from Honeycomb and I guess they patched the vulnerability zergRush was exploiting.
This is really irritating, coming from the n900 world. Google should really clamp down on this whole anti-root nonsense. It is unbelievably customer-hostile.
Got my wife a Glide on Sunday. Glad to see others trying to root like myself. Super one click did nothing for me also:-(
+1 on rooting this thing. Its only been out for 2 days, but it doesnt seem like many people are getting the phone. It would help if we had our own forum.

zergRush doesn't work; I don't know much about it but I recall it being a kernel exploit, and the SGH-I927 uses 2.6.36.3 (I think the standard Honeycomb kernel).
I'll be picking up my Captivate Glide tonight or tomorrow I think. Hopefully we can find a root. Doesn't look like many people are buying this device just yet. Hopefully we'll get a dedicated forum.
I picked up one of these on Sunday when it became available (I have been waiting for this phone for months!).
This is now my 3rd Android phone on ATT (Moto Backflip, Moto Flipside, and now Samsung Captivate Glide).
You'll notice that every phone so far has had a physical QWERTY kb (I can't stand using touchscreens for typing).
I do have to say though, that this keyboard is my least favorite of the 3 devices (both the Moto's had a much better feel to the keyboards, sort of bubble buttons, not 100% flat like the kb buttons on the Glide).
The negative difference in the keyboard though is not enough to out-weigh ALL of the positives this phone has over the Moto's (CPU(!!!), screen size, camera, built-in storage, etc, etc). Not to mention getting Gingerbread(2.3) over Android 2.1!
Anyways, I too had looked briefly into rooting this phone, and I just began with looking for root programs for Android 2.3.5 (the Glides android version), and I could not easily find one, granted, I did not look all that hard.
I had/have previously rooted my previous 2 android phones though. And even installed the latest CyanogenMod onto my Backflip (that CPU was just TOOO SLOW, UGH...)
I would hope that a dedicated forum for this phone is coming, as it really has potential. I am holding off on the root search for now, and just looking for basics... like USB drivers / mass storage capabilities when hooked up to a computer.
Does anyone have some directions on this basic stuff?

Well, at least switching it to mass storage mode is easy:
Settings->Wireless and network->USB utilities->Connect storage to PC
I agree with you on the KB. It sucks. It's not unusable, but my n900's keyboard was way better. Still doesn't detract significantly from the overall awesomeness of the device.
... except the root issue, which is seriously aggravating.
Your computer should automatically download the drivers needed for USB connectivity.....if that's what you were referring to.

I think the problem is no root access, hence no access to applications that would allow custom kernels to boot. Getting my g/f one in the coming weeks so hopefully development takes off!
i guess your other option is to whip up a rooted stock kernel and drop it in through Odin/Heimdall. Thats what i used on my Galaxy S 2. Good Luck.
I doubt there will be much dev action for the Glide, as they seem to have moved on to SGS II i777. Unfortunately for people who like physical boards, they are basically dead. Android started out strong for physical boards with the G1 and the DROID, but after DROID 2, no carrier has been carrying a flagship device with a 'board. Even the DROID 3, which is an impressive phone in it's own right, was already overshadowed by Verizon's 4G LTE, which currently doesn't have a high-end keyboarded device.
I wish they would keep going with physical boards, but I finally gave up hope and got an iPhone. My need for high-end phones is greater than my need for a keyboard, so I'm admitting defeat.
I was actually going in to att today to grab a sky rocket, and saw the glide by accident. As soon as I saw the physical kb, I was sold. Love the glide so far.

After a long time staying loyal to the Nexus line I just picked up an S3. Main reason was the 44$ price tag and the fact I could stick a 64GB micro SD in here.
So far I think the phone is ok but WOW does their bloatware make the phone sucks. I really want my old Android OS back and wil be reading all the guides I can about flashing it.
Anyone else gotten one? Anyone flashes it yet?

Just root it and freeze/delete the apps you don't need. Stay away from AOSP, you'll get used to Touchwiz and love what it offers over those buggy ROMs.

I may try and find someone in town with a custom rom S3 and try it out. I REALLY miss my CM roms on my Nexus S.
You are right though, there are some great features bundled in the touchwiz OS but a ton I simply want gone. I simply hate the layout of a lot of the included programs like the SMS, calendar and phone.

If it's CM you're after, that's definitely available for your new phone. The device code you're looking for is d2att, i.e. this is the download page you'd want.
Of course, you might want to root the device first (the most applicable image for your device would probably be the Rogers one), and put a new recovery image on there - I suggest TWRP for that, though if you're used to CWM that's certainly an option as well.

If you want AOSP / AOKP get Task650 Roms. Hes has a 100% perfect 4.1.2, and a great stable 4.2.1 ROM out. Check in original android. Been using it for a long long time on both the S3's in our household and everyones super happy. Super fast and no crashes or problems. TW was just too slow.
His Rom's are for AT&T.

AT&T's model is the exact same as the Bell, Rogers (and Fido), and Telus

So im surprised no one else has chimmed in as a new fido owner. I must say their cost is a little high for the phone which might be the reason why. 250$ on a 2 year plan for a phone that is free most elsewhere aint cheap. Luckily for me I got a great deal on it (44$ total cost!)
Does anyone have some warranty related info or links they could send me? I have read about an hours worth and cant seem to gather a clear picture. From what I can tell theres are three methods to rooting this device.
Also, any info on what to backup in order not to brick this phone?
This phone is quite a bit more work than the Nexus I had earlier. None the less I am pretty sure ill have tons of fun!

Looks like I will be tripping the flash counter no matter what I do accoding to the first link. Have there been any further developements since that post was written? Warranty is a concern of mine with this phone as its quite pricey!

LMAO. Touchwiz is complete garbage and really slows the S3 down. I used it for a couple of weeks and could not stand all the Samsung bloat and the Samsung replacement apps (phone, messaging, etc.).
Wiped it and I'm running CM 10.1 nightly (1/13) and the phone is a beast now. Super fast, with the best possible UI, i.e. the way Android is meant to be!
Yes there are a few bugs but they're nothing major and at this point CM 10.1 is definitely good enough to be a daily driver. DO NOT hesitate to drop TW crap for CM!

Just an "old piece" but not "trash". Cause I can honestly say it is better then S4, which I previously used.

Guys, grow up please... I've had 2 updates within 1 months... Please be patient... I wouldn't say that LG has no timely updates.... If there are fixes to be done then they will issue them. If it ain't broken why fix it?

Everything new is not always better. I had a Galaxy nexus before GPRO and with each update the phone received after the SOLID 4.1.2, problems started mounting. These were not just performance issues and this was on a supposed pure Google device. Go visit the Galaxy Nexus forums and see how much folks are downgrading back to 4.1.2 from 4.2.x and 4.3. Case in point, 4.2.1 introduced issues with Bluetooth audio streaming which Google later fixed in 4.2.2. If a phone manufacturer decides to jump to a new release right away, unless they are will to deal with the churn and cost associated with putting out a new release every few months or so to correct problems, they risk taking untested functionality and upsetting their user base when stuff don't work.
I am not sure what the fascination is with 4.3 especially when 4.4 is around the corner. The biggest advantage in 4.3 in my opinion is the addition of Bluetooth LE (which GPRO already has), OpenGL ES for games and TRIM (flash filesystem garbage collection to prevent slow down). The last two would be nice to have but I am willing to wait for 4.3 to fully bake before jumping in. The GPRO is a solid device with ONE big advantage over the Note 3 at the moment. Unlike the Note 3, the GPRO does not have KNOX.

I am not saying updates are bad. I am asking you to use logic. LG does not update the software on their phones often. I knew this well before getting the GPRO. When/if they do provide an update, would you rather them provide one based on the current 4.3 (with all its current issues) knowing that once LG does you are probably stuck with it (good or bad) for a while or would you rather them wait for 4.3.x. I would much prefer they wait (which unfortunately means longer update cycles). Even the Nexus 4 has issues with 4.3 at the moment. 4.3 seems rushed and needs more time to fully bake. The developer community is doing their best to fix some the problems but that means using cooked ROMs which requires an open bootloader. Something I cant see (open bootloader) on the Note3 just yet due to KNOX.

:sly: lol. Sorry no offense, You really are :sly: So 4.2.2 in g2 is rushed. 1 year is not enough to update to 4.2 leave 4.3. Close the company for selling phones. and leave everything on Google edition.
Personally 4.2 did not bring much to the table compared to 4.1 (again this is my opinion). Name an APP that works on 4.2 and not on 4.1. In many ways 4.2 on phones was a step back in performance compared to 4.1 since 4.2 was really optimized for tablets (large heap sizes, multi-user support, etc.) with some inkling of benefit for phone users. Some of the changes in 4.2 cause massive performance issues (i.e. heap size changes) in phones which after a few iteration (4.2.1, 4.2.2) got ironed out. This only illustrate my point about why it may not be so great to always jumping to the new first. If you want consistent OS updates from a manufacturer then you need to get a Nexus device. If you bought an LG hoping to periodic updates then you made a big mistake.
Prior to getting the GPRO, I had the G2 for 3 days. Do I miss it? Heck no. Why? Because the GPRO is an all around better phone and from the surface you would not be able to tell the G2 is using 4.2.2 and the GPRO 4.1.2. If the GPRO gets 4.2.2 that would be nice but I'm not dying for it. Sure I would like the phone to be updated but I am not going to rely on LG for that and when I am ready to update, I'll find the most stable ROM possible and use that. I've been on the bleeding edge with Google for the pass two years with my Galaxy Nexus. I'm not interested in being a beta tester anymore.

Aside from "Knock Knock" and a few camera tricks, there was really not that much brought to the table by the G2 when compared to the GPRO in terms of features. In fact the GPRO has some features you wont find on some G2s (Wireless charging, true 5.5" screen real estate - G2 claims 5.2" screen but in reality it is more like 5" since the software buttons take up the bottom portion of the screen). The G2 was more about LG participating in the HW spec war presently going on between phone vendors. Most of the minor tweaks I saw on the G2 were with respect LG's Quick APPS which can be easily ported to the GPRO. In fact I think there is already a GPRO ROM that does this. The UI on the phones are so similar that you would have to go to the "About Phone" section to tell that you were on 4.1.2 rather than 4.2.2 on the GPRO.
"Knock Knock" is a nice feature but its only important to have on the G2 since LG placed the darn buttons on the back of the phone. Buttons on the back sounds like a great concept but in actual use the buttons being on the back just felt unnatural. At times I would have to knock the screen more than twice for it to turn on/off. Sometimes I would have to knock harder than I would like as well. Playing with that gimmick was nice for the first few day but when you get over it and start to really use the phone, you start to realize all the moments where having the button on the back is a pain in the behind.
So with that said, I think most of the minor software tweaks I saw on the G2 will make it into the GPRO if it is updated.

Guest mode most likely relies on the multi-user capability introduced in 4.2 so if that is something you are specifically looking for then you are unfortunately at the mercy of LG. All of the other G2 features you mentioned below MAY (no certain) be hardware specific to the G2. We know the GPRO has the hardware to transmit IR but what we don't know is if it has the circuitry to receive IR for learning. Same goes for "knock knock" in that we don't know if there is any hardware required to make it work.
If LG updates the GPRO to 4.2 or above, I can easily see them bring guest mode to the GPRO. If hardware is not the limiting factor for IR learning I think we will see that one too. Knock Knock on the other hand may remain a G2/"future LG phone" feature even if it is purely a software implementation. LG is in the phone business to make money and right now the "knock knock" feature is one of their prime differentiator. This unfortunately means that if you want it you will have to buy the latest and greatest hardware from them. They are not going to bring it back to older platforms because they want you to upgrade. Again this is just my opinion. Hopefully LG proves me wrong.

Granted it's not that it's not totally working, but Android 4.2 correctly supports group sms messaging.

I'm almost ready to make my switch (from AT&T to Verizon). I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 that I put Candy5 ROM on it, and I really liked it, so I'm planning on trying that on an LG G4. I like the built in Privacy Guard and Ad Blocker....but as I read these forums it doesn't appear that Candy is developed for the G4. Advice...go with the G4 and see what other ROM's will be similar, or go with the G3 as I'm getting major discounts and a choice of phones? Thank you much.

TL;DR If you need a rom, wait, if you can get by without it, I highly suggest the G4.
At the moment, there are no ROMS for the Verizon variant of the LG g4. You can root and disable some of the bloat wear, but that is about it. We don't have custom roms because the bootloader is still locked and this prevents us from installing a custom recovery (such as TWRP) that would allow you to install a ROM (if one existed).
If your hopes are to put a ROM on the LG G4, then I suggest you wait until the bootloader unlock happens (if it ever does).
HOWEVER, and you can take this with a grain or cup or whatever of salt, I had a Note 3. The development on it was extremely slow because it too had a locked bootloader. We used a program called SafeStrap which allowed stock based ROMs to be installed and deployed to the device. Another option was FlashFire which allowed you to flash a ROM, backup, or update from inside the device. So there are options available to get a ROM on the device, if they existed, but they would have to be stock based.
Both of these tools helped to bring some ROMS to the Note 3, but never succeed in providing a CM based rom.
I am a heavy ROM freak. I love to flash new ROMs, everyday if I can get by with it, but I usually test them for a few weeks and document how the ROM functioned on the device.
Normally my major complaints (coming from samsung) would be the bloatware and the UI overlay that the mother company puts in, such as Touchwiz. But I think that LG did a REALLY good job of keeping the bloat down, the UI smooth and nonintrusive (the same CAN NOT BE SAID FOR VERIZON!!! Their bloatware is atrocious and they have ways of spying on your device to see what is running and if you are rooted), so even though LG did a great job Verizon screwed the pooch, as always.
I really enjoyed the stock elements that LG brought to the LG G4, and all in all I say its a good switch. The device has a good battery life with the stock battery, there are tweaks with Xposed to make the DPI a little more manageable, and the Phone, at least my phone, is super smooth with NO crashes to this day! If you can get by without a ROM, I think the G4 would be a good upgrade.
If you HAVE to have a custom ROM, I suggest you wait a little longer to see what happens with the Bootloader.
If you have the ability buy one of the H815 European versions of the G4, LG will allow you to unlock the bootloader on the device which will allow you to install TWRP, and there is already a ROM for it!

My sentiments exactly. I couldn't wait for the G4. Slick design, leather back, great camera. A class act phone, but I don't want to keep waiting, and hoping, that the bootloader gets unlocked. The MXP has almost the same specs, and I know development will be huge. Gotta feed the need.

I got 2 64gb's coming 9/21. Unless the G4 gets some development soon, that might be my last day using it.

As others have said, there are no ROMs out there currently for the Verizon G4.
No roms yet for the LG G4 but honestly the stock rom is golden. I've been a fan of stock LG ROMS since the G2. It's just about as close to vanilla as you're going to get.
Your best bet is to root, debloat, then install xposed, change your launcher to Google Now Launcher, then install the GEL xposed app (to change grid sizes, tweaks to launcher, etc).

Huh? I'm sorry, but LG is one of the furthest from stock Android out there.
Motorola and Sony are much closer to stock.

LG is much closer to stock than HTC or Samsung. The last moto x i played on felt identical to stock android so i assumed it was. Ive never had a sony.

Im also considering ditching my G4 for X Pure entirely because of the GUI and no root/roms. The GUI is not even close to vanilla. In fact from everything I've read on the forums the stock launcher was merely ported straight from the G3's KK ROM and doesn't include any/many updates for L. No support for native equalizer.
G4's battery life is mediocre at best, but receiving a free spare from LG and it being removable in general is a big plus. The display on the G4 is above average. If i could have an unlocked bootloader G4 with AOSP it would probably be perfect.

My Pure is being delivered today. I can't wait for the devs to get theirs, so I can start flashing ROMs again. It's been a long three months. :victory:

Just got the black/gray, and I'm not worried one bit about it getting rooted. With an unlockable bootloader I'm sure there will be mad development. I love my G4, but I'm not holding out much hope for the bootloader at this point.

Getting rid of the g4 was hard, but the nexus 6 is working well at this point. I forgot how nice it is to have a working touch screen.

I'm tired of waiting also. The only thing that has prevented me from ordering the mxp so far is the possibility that the g4 pro is going to be an awesome phone. I'm sure it will have the same development issues as the g4 but if the spec rumors are close I might can live with it....lol

It's time for a new phone and I'm on the hunt doing research. Such a hard choice! I've had a Galaxy S1, S3 and S5 and loved them all so I went and got the S6 the other day without ever reading about it. When I went to install my ROM of choice I found out that Samsung is now officially releasing only the douche ROM...so I returned it 3 days later.
I read that the 5X was going to be released soon and also read some stuff on the Moto X Play (which is what it's called here in Canada, available at Telus). The 5X seems ok...I could potentially wait a month for that delivery (if Telus even carries it), or I could go get the Play or the G4 today--which seems to be the forerunner at this point due to it having slightly better specs than the Play.
My questions relate to custom ROM experiences. I like to have AOSP support with all the fancy settings available to me! I especially like hardware keys. My S3 was able to turn the flashlight on by holding the home key. I know the G4 doesn't have hardware buttons anymore so I'm not even sure if that's a thing. Maybe volume keys instead? That might create problems with track seeking though. Whatever...as long as there are options lol.
So...what kind of experiences--good and bad--have you guys had with this phone? Is there good ROM support? It seems like M will be out soon...does that mean the code will also be available for developers? I see a few ROM's available but unfortunately I can't test them out because I don't actually have the phone.
I'm sure I'll have more questions but thought I'd get a discussion going for those interested in sharing their experiences.

i'm somehow convinced that when the official android M update from LG finally released, the developer scene would start to bud here and there.
but for now, i think the developers are gathering only in some unlocked bootloader variants...

The play is a midranger with a good battery not comparable with a flagship like the G4. Maybe you were thinking of the Style or Pure as its known in the US.

Not too much at the moment. Just root. To use xposed entails risk as there is no recovery. Unless you can source a H815 euro variant of the G4.
I'm sure I'll have more questions but thought I'd get a discussion going for those interested in sharing their experiences.

I'll be honest, I was about to use my middlefinger to write an aggressive post for you but the intelligent part of my brain said "STOP! THINK!". So I thought...and thought again. Coming from Nexus devices running CM only, on the G4 I have yet to find a reason to even consider a custom ROM. I sometimes miss the pure Android but that's all about it. It's the first time since my Nokia E72 in 2007 I did not switched a ROM for more than a month. Let's see where this goes. Good point mate!

It's too early for the G4 now. Currently only the EU H815 model has an unlockable bootloader. LG's official page says more devices will be added to the list soon, but I wouldn't count on that. Since you're from Canada and propably won't get the H815 on contract, it'd be risky. If I had your patience, I'd wait for the 5X. You seem to be an Android purist. I wouldn't want to deal with a device running a custom version of Android. Also, even if CM or any other AOSP ROM would make its way to the various variants of the G4, they're going to have these little issues here and there because of bad or missing documentation from the manufacturer. It'll be a buggy experience overall. For example, I'm sure the camera will be a mess on CM/AOSP/A

It's great so far. Running vanilla Android was a nice experience but I got bored. Having a custom UI with the option to use a custom vanilla Android is the perfect place for me. But as I said, right now I have no reason to go vanilla.
5X = 32gig no sd
G4 = sd
I can't live with 32gig so G4 fills all my needs. Stock too.

I'm glad to hear that the G4 won't have much ROM support for some time--not that I'm glad for the *lack* of support, I'm just happy that I was informed of this *before* I made my purchase lol. There are some things that vanilla doesn't seem to offer me. Some features are not needed (pie and other recent/quick access features, and others I can't even think of cos I never turn them on in my current ROM lol); however, the ability to alter the power menu, the ability to add custom hardware keys (mainly for flashlight; if not a hardware key, then at least a toggle in the tray, or in the power menu), status bar changes (clock, color, battery % in numbers, double-tap for screen off), led control, etc (perhaps all these can be altered with apps or via Xposed. @onetwelve You said above there could be problems with Xposed because there's no recovery. You mean TWRP recovery? You can't mean that, so I'm confused :s).
The lack of camera support would suck. I am by no means a photographer; the main thing I use my camera for are taking random photos and also taking quick snapshots that require a fast-focus to be achieved. It's frustrating when camera apps don't work properly. I think pretty much every camera is going to be good enough for my purposes. 21MP vs 16MP = whoopdeedoo.
SD card support is not a concern for me. I've lived with 16GB for years and it's almost never been a problem unless I record a bunch of videos before I get home. I don't put music on my device (only audiobooks). Getting a 32GB internal memory phone would be like landing in a pot of gold haha!
My buddy has been nagging me to get an iPhone 6 and jailbreak it--he says I'll never turn back...but I'm not sure, I love Android and don't really wanna learn a whole new interface.

There is no custom recovery as in there is none for the G4 variant you most likely will be getting in Canada, as of now. However, there are reports of an unofficial Bootloader unlock method coming for many variants of the G4. It's important to note that in this case you must not take OTA updates or the unofficial unlock method won't work. Anyway, no need to get into detail much.
There's no need for a custom recovery since flash fire is enough to get xposed working.
Btw. Is that a Rick & Morty reference?

I guess you mean the 5X? In this case, yes, you can expect the great minds of XDA to develop for this device and since the 5X is relatively cheap and people tending towards mid-high-range devices, you can expect a big fellowship in the 5X development section and forum in general.
Nvm, I was referring to the "whoopdeedoo". Realized that "whoopdeedoo" is a very common saying. Just binge-finished Rick & Morty but somehow my brain is still processing the information.
EDIT: A Rick & Morty reference would be like, uh, like "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub", or "Get shwifty" or how much "Schmeckles" does the Moto X cost and so forth. Wait, what?

am not too knowledgable on the xposed side of things. it was an interaction i had with someone on youtube and they said if you do not have access to kdz, then in case of a boot loop you would not be able to recover. since you're in canada and the carriers there are no better than us carriers, xposed might not be an option unless you REALLY know what you're doing. There's these TOT's instead so somebody more knowledgeable can answer.

yeah, vendors keep cameras very close to their chest. Only stock based roms will preserve camera or lets say are more certain to preserve it.
other stuff is going to be buggy or not work too well. this is down to developers so you end up using 3rd party cameras but its not the same as stock when it comes to cameras.
The cameras on the nexii are pretty good from what i've heard. But I would contend that the lack of OIS is an egregious omission when the last two nexii had it. Maddening! why go to the trouble to develop such a good camera and leave it out (!!!)
This means you will have to have a good handhold to avoid blur or camera shake indoors or in low light. But if the light is enough i think you will be happy with the nexus cameras. They really have come a long way since the Nexus 4. In good light i would not be surprised to see them rivaling the S6/G4 in terms of preservation of details. They are that good. But unfortunately thats it.
Btw the nexii are 12MP shooters. Don't let the mega pickles bother you just check out the photos at the pixel level and see for yourself.

thought the whole point of getting an iphone is that there is no need to do jailbreaking. not nowadays anyway. why would you want to jailbreak ios9 ?
