Ever since I lost my HTC G2 I've been searching for a replacement for all my emulator gaming. I read about the Xperia Play and this sounds exactly like what I'm looking for.
- I wouldn't be using it as a phone. I've got my HTC One S for that (I'm with T-Mobile). I would only connect through WiFi.
- I would mainly use it to play emulators. I don't care too much about marketplace games that I can play on my normal phone.
- I would most likely be rooting the phone in order to erase all of the unneeded apps and free up more space. I don't know much about custom ROMs or bootloaders but I might look into that as well. Anything that would increase the phone's performance without shortening its lifespan.
My question is does it matter which model I buy? I see the R800x listed online for as low as $80, and the R800i in the $200 range. Why is the R800i so much more expensive? Does the phone need to be unlocked? Are there any flaws/hardware issues/annoyances in general that I need to know about?
Thanks for any help. I know you guys get these questions a lot but I couldn't find the specific answers I was looking for after searching.
Shouldn't matter. I'd go for the Verizon play. Around $80 on eBay and you unlock the bootloader for free. Just be aware that there are not as many choices to roms for the Verizon model. Good romz are definitely out their for the Verizon play.

Do not buy the R800x. Lack of support roms, terrible sound quality in the speakers (missing xloud another Sony feature), missing sony stock applications (true sony experience), less users, stuck on 2.3.3 firmware, and lack of developers. Take it from who owned an R800x. Right now my r800x is spare parts for GSM xperia play. Verizon xperia play is worth less than the R800i and R800a last time i checked for verizon xperia play $60. R800i and R800a is still go over above $100.
Thanks for the input! It sounds like the R800i is the one that I should get then. Unfortunately the price is a bit high right now, I'm going to have to continue looking around until I can find one a bit cheaper. How good is the hinge on the game pad? The G2's keyboard was notoriously bad and would not stay closed.
You know, I have two version of this phone...
R800i gets stock SE experience with 2.3.4 OS, you can get max 230 RAM (Fresh instal)...
R800x gets stock vanilla GB experience with 2.3.3 OS (ugradable to 2.3.4), you can get max 270 RAM (Fresh instal)...
Cause R800x get vanilla OS, it's smoother to playing games, but you will lose SE taste...
And I have read that R800x user can unlock bootloader on sony website like R800i...

Heres the one thing nobody mentions the differences between the R800x and R800i. You can not use any GSM GB roms on the R800x they are incompatible. The R800x will boot but you will have a black screen.

Would you recommend the R800x over the R800i from a purely gaming standpoint? What would I be missing from the stock SE?

I listed them on you lose timescape, xloud, bravia engine, custom roms, custom kernel, wifi connection on the R800x is weaker, weaker speaker sound, google servies dont work on R800x 2.3.4 firmware. List goes on and on.

But if I want better conection n optimized OS for hardware, I will stand for R800i, custom OS n more tweak is more than R800x...

If you only use it for gaming, the R800x is a great deal, better than most PMP that cost more.
You can unlock the bootloader of the R800x free from Sony website in order to flash custom kernel and roms. The R800x have less roms than the GSM version, but unless you specifically like to flash roms or want to use ICS and JB, it's not necessary since they both have poorer performance than stock/stoc-based Gingerbread roms, which by far are still the ideal choice for best performance on this device. You might to want install custom kernel to overclock though. You probably only need to root it to delete some bloatwares.
As for flaws, the screen brightness is a bit weak and sometimes barely or not visible under direct sunlight and the screen might get dirt underneath, depending on how much lints are in your jean pockets. Some people broke or worn out the flex cable (that connect between the motherboard and screen) overtime due to sliding out the gamepad too much, but I had 3 different Plays and never had the issue.
My preferred version is the ATT R800at, its compatible with the R800i roms, and after sim unlocked its compatible with T-Mobile 3G in some area.

I might have to check out the R800at now, I really like the blue case. Thanks for all the info!
The R800at is the version that one can't unlock the bootloader from Sony website. Though WotonServer is supposed to be able to unlock both of the sim and bootloader.
There is the new thing in US about being illegal to sim unlock carrier locked device, but if you buy it used out of contact it doesn't matter.
But even the stock rom rooted and bloatwares remove is enough if you don't plan to unlock or flash anything.

I have the R800x and only use it for gaming.
I have a Galaxy S 3 for my smart phone and don't even have Verizon phone service. I unlocked the bootlader back when you had to pay using the test point method. Since I don't use this as my phone I don't care at all about google sync issues which only affect Android 2.3.4.
I was able to flash the ftf 2.3.4 rom and then since my bootloader is unlocked I rooted that by flashing superuser with a bootable recovery. Doom kernel test v02 works as well since I don't use my phone for cell service I don't care that doom test kernel v02 breaks 3G. As long as wifi works I am good, which it does. With that I can overclock to 2ghz if I want but the stock kernel has been fine for me for everything.
I have not noticed any issues with the speakers though I cannot compare to other models. They are better than the single speaker in my galaxy s 3 I think due to the fact the speakers are more forward(or downward) facing than a typical single speaker smartphone, though I usually use headphones anyway.
The nice thing about the Verizon version to me is Gingerbread is basically stock Android and there isn't much bloat to worry about.
If you unlock your bootloader there are a couple JB roms like slim bean and one other called zeus rom or something that work well enough and are pretty much AOSP but for compatibility the 2.3.4 rom has been great.
Due to the Verizon one being CDMA you WILL pay less for a nicer unit.
One thing to note is that there is some sort of screen protector thing that comes pre-installed (that scratches very easily, smudges easily and doesn't feel as nice as going without) and if you take that off the brightness of the display will be better. There are comparisons if you just search. It's kind of hard to tell that protector is even on there when you get it because it is installed really well.
All in all I am happy with the R800x. It is basically a super powered PSP Go with a better screen resolution. (If you don't play PSP games anyway ) It runs every emulator I can think of just fine which is what I primarily use it for in addition to games like Final Fantasy 3 or FF Dimensions (using the app GameKeyboard to map touches to the physical keys of course )
P.S. I upgraded to 2.3.4 because Final Fantasy Dimensions doesn't work on 2.3.3.
P.P.S. My Vita will replace the Xperia Play if it ever gets hacked enough. That would be a beast of a gaming machine if it was fully unlocked.
P.P.P.S If you like to chronically flash and test new ROMS the R800x is NOT for you.
So I found a listing for an R800 AT&T 4G unlocked on ebay. What does unlocked refer to in this case? Would I have any issues with the new law that just took place?

It is most likely mean sim unlocked. Unless the buyer specifically state bootloader unlock.
The law is really not enforceable anyway and it only apply if you buy it AT&T through a contract as I recall, even if you do no one is going to bother you.
With locked bootloader, you can root, install CWM and the NXT Lite rom for this device, its the smoothest possible experience (imo) so you don't have to worry about bootloader unlock unless you really want to.

Currently, I have LG G2x and frankly I hate it with passion.
I'm on T-Mobile and I understand I won't get their so called "4G" internet and only Edge which is fine.
I really like the design of phone and integration of facebook and all of the fun stuff. Is it worth the downgrade? I mean, I don't play games, I don't even surf the internet on my G2x. Just facebook and gadu-gadu communicator. it seems dual-core phone is a waste to me...
Or better it would be to wait for Arc S?
Arc S and current Arc is basically the same everything, only difference is the white body and stock speed set to 1.4Ghz vs 1.0Ghz of the current Arc. The current Arc is also cheaper since its older.
Like you I don't play games or do something to stress the phone, so Arc more than satisfies my requirement for now.

IMO Getting an Arc from G2X is not a Downgrade from my Point of View
LG G2X may be the first Dual-Core mobile, but in reality, it was rushed and causes lots of problems, like overheating, phone rebooting, unresponsive phone after a couple of months used(i read a lot about this, also i have a friend who have Optimus 2X and can confirm this problems too) so the phone is not really that great in every day use, Raw Dual Core power but it is not optimized for Better User Experience
While Xperia Arc S, is a refreshed Arc with more CPU Power in it, the overall its the same, I have to say that SE really did a great job to optimize the Phone for Excellent User Experience
I have Xperia Arc, I managed 250hrs of no boot, after that i got 1 random reboot when I was doing heavy task to my Arc, I play a lot and Browse a lot, all I can say is very Excellent Phone.
about Crack Issues in Sensor in Xperia Arc no one can deny that it is not happening, usually Midnight Blue version gets this cracks while Misty Silver have low users reporting they have this Issue, Mine doesn't have it yet, and hopefully it wont
and warranty does cover the replacement of the front cover, and I read somewhere in SE support forums, that they will have the reinforced front cover replacing those old ones, same Material but Better and Stronger.
maybe, just maybe that Arc S will not have this Crack Issues, SE knows this Issue for a Long time now, and that's why it is covered by warranty, so Arc S might have the Reinforced Material
Well you aren't using the smartphones smart, so sticking with the old arc is fine.

Hmm what do you mean?
Anyway, OP: get the Arc. It's great for just anything.
@besthijacker: The Arc is quite good... but keep in mind that (if it concerns you) there are still no custom ROM available... just one kernel and CM7 version that still does not have camer support. MIUI and other custom ROM aren't available for some time. The Xperia Arc has a lack of developers and you can feel it inside the dev-section of the xperia arc :-(
It's a pitty because the phone is generally speaking rather good and has an excellent design!
The amount of custom roms and kernels is awesome for G2x but I think after looking at videos and pictures, I fell in love in SE UI's...I used to know Xperia Pro Mini for a short and it was pretty slick, in terms of UI...and until LG G2x gets Ice-Cream Sandwich, dual-core is totally useless(IMO)
While, I do not have any issues with my G2x like some people, I feel phone does not meet my expectations in terms of UI which I love about SE in general...
My first phone was SE and have been only getting SE phones for last 6 years
Thanks, I will sell G2x and buy Arc, but what is the "crack issue". Should I get Blue or Silver version in that case?
I will try to sell G2X for good money but probably will have to add some $$$. I see Arc goes for 420$ brand new on phones sites and around 400$ used on ebay. I won't get that much for my LG G2x..go figure
The crack issue is a tiny hairline crack near the light sensor on the front - you have to look real close to see it - seems to be much more common on the midnight blue than the silver.. but having said that - I wouldn't let it stop you from choosing the blue if that's the colour you want - it's not a big deal.. and they may well have solved the problem with newer manufactured handsets.
If you like the SE UI then I reckon you won't be looking for custom ROMs anyway? You should try to get an unbranded one though so that you get firmware updates quicker, and also allows you to unlock the Boot Loader easily so that you can install custom kernel for over clocking and flashing pre-rooted system images..
My system is rooted stock, with a few bit's removed, but I have doomlords kernel and overclocked to 1.55Ghz.
By unbranded you mean, it does not belong to any network and there is no logo of the network right?
I will probably buy it from welectronics or plemix, since its only $400..or ebay if I find around $350 but used...I rather pay extra and get brand new in the box.
I'm running stock rom, rooted with custom kernel on my G2x. At first it was all fun, flashing different custom roms but eventually got bored because I relized...I have no use for any of the features heheh
Same here.. Custom roms don't really appeal to me.. Not seen any that give me more than stock.. And I like the SE ui. By unbranded I mean that it's the basic SE software, with no network software tailoring over the top. Although I think that the devs on here may have cracked the bootloader for branded handsets too now.. I unlocked mine the day that SE released the service.

I found a website that has Arc S for $440, while Arc is $400. Is it worth that $40 extra? I wonder if Arc S will suffer from same "crack" issue or not? -,-
If you have 40$ more, go for it.
Noone knows if it'll crack, too. Wait 1-2 months and then the first users should report cracks - in case it cracks

And after I bought it, is it recomended to install a custom rom, kernel, OC or UV?

Got my Xperia Play in February for 180€ - slightly used with minor scratches on the gamepad.
So I actually would think, No. Back then I had the promise of a fully up to date android 4 phone for the price.
Think the fair price should be about 50euros less (my opinion).
Things to check: Display scratches, gamepad buttons, 8gb SD card in the phone, Check IMEI number online to see you don't get a stolen phone.
The phone runs pretty good on its own without custom kernels and whatsoever. But there always is this option to improve speed etc. pp.
As you only have little internal memory, I recommand you to uninstall bloatware, mainly install apps on the sd and ye, have fun

My first two android phones were Moto and I will never again in a bajillion years ever touch their stuff again. I came from a Motorola Droid, Droid 2 Global, Samsung Captivate and now the Xperia PLAY. Hands down this phone is my favorite bar none...... the Droid X2 did not do too well. In all honesty I would stick with the Xperia PLAY and sell the Droid X2 while it can still be sold for some cash....just my opinion if it were me in your shoes.

Hello,
I'm considering a new phone and have been looking at the Xperia S/SL. I like the feel of the devices and the design. I think having a physical camera button is great! If you have an S/SL, what do you like most about it? What do you like the least? Seems other than 2 additional colors and a bump in CPU speed, the SL is the same as the S. Is that so? Most everything I've seen in terms of customization (new ROMs, etc) talk about the S and not the SL. Can I safely assume that the S and SL are synonymous with regards to rooting, ROMs, etc.?
Thanks,
cesman
Well I must say the XS is awesome, i mena the camera is great (except some autofocus issues, however you can get another app for that) the screen is gorgeous, flaws ... must I say non removeable battery, lacking micro sd port (however 32 gb I think It's fair enough)
I should go for the S if you want to unlock your bootloader
You can flash a custom kernel to have 1.7GHz like SL, no other main difference between S and SL.
The camera is good, and the device runs smooth with some tweaks for custom looks it's the same as other devices, you can always customize Android
Non removable battery and no micro-sd slot doesn't bother me, there is a key reset combo and I don't need more then 32GB
Battery life isn't superb, but also not really bad, you can easily get one day or more. Unless you are a very heavy user or have a lot of apps that sync data
Sent from my LT26i using xda app-developers app
just like my phone have lots of apps that need sync , and thats why i bought smartphone , so it can sync automatically and not to do it manually.
For the price you really can't go wrong, you get a stunning 300+ PPI 720p HD screen, a 12mp Camera and a decent dual core.
It's got a gorgeous UI but since it's an android you're probably going to be skinning it anyways. It feels weighty and it's sturdy, it doesn't feel cheap at all and you feel like you're holding a sturdy phone. Build quality is good, I've dropped it countless times and it's still yet to break for me.
You can unlock the bootloader officially which is good and it really isn't all that hard to root the device and install roms on it.
The downsides I'd say is the non-removable battery which for is a concern and a problem considering the battery isn't all the impressive, It lasts me from 8am in the morning to about 3-4am with low/moderate usage.
32gb for most people should be more than enough.
Again, for the price it's an amazing phone; it ain't the best phone though obviously but if you wanted a good phone you'd be looking at your Galaxy S3s or waiting for the Xperia Z

Interesting choice of adjectives as some would consider "amazing" better than "good". I held the Z in my hand at CES and didn't care for the feel. The ZL has a much better hand feel. If anything, that is the phone I'd wait for... As long as I can get it unlocked. I'm more attached to the Xperia line than the Galaxy... Although it is nice that Galaxy has official CM releases up to the current M1.

Does this mean that the SL's bootloader can't be unlocked?
I'm planning to buy a XS/XSL too, and i can get the SL for a lower price

I've search on here and no one has come right out and said they have unlocked the XSL's bootloader. Sony's own site doesn't show it as a supported model. Where can you get it for less?!

It can also be unlocked but I thought the S would be cheaper then the SL
Just buy the cheapest one, XS roms also work on SL and vice versa
any body make a custom rom for Xperia SL (Real SL)
becuase all of custom rom are Xperia S
I guess all Roms for Xperia s will be compatible with the sl. Not sure though.

Kernels are compatible too, right? I really don't matter if i end up turning the SL into an S, because, as i said before, i can get the SL for a lower price
If for some reason i would like to go back to the stock rom, could i use one of the "stock roms for xperia s thread" that is at the development section or i would have to get the stock official rom for SL?

It'll be better to get an S!! because its tries and tested and u have a lot of ppl to hold u back!! SL is just picking up!
The S is exactly the same as the SL just the SL is overclocked from the factory. I have a SL, shoulda just bought the S and saved some money.
Is something wrong with the device
i want to know is there something wrong with the hardware or anything i really want to buy it but m confused.
I was just wondering what's the real reason that the xperia play has such bad volume when on any rom that's not stock based aka CM10 and AOKP Roms. The volume is horrible i can't even hear it anymore when on JB but the speed is so good i don't want to leave. and lets face it equalizers and DSP DON'T work. Without XLoud the volume is horrible and nobody seems know how to fix this. I heard from "Someone" said that the issue may be kernel related and that the fix needs to applied to the kernel, I am not sure how true this is but if it were i would love to start learning how to make a kernel. but if possible i would like to know some REAL way to get the sound up at least buy a little bit. in stock ics with XLoud the volume loud, one of the loudest phones (in my opinion)
I read somewhere its due to not having all the proper drivers, to take full advantage of certain aspects of the PLAY as we only officially have GB and unofficially (sort of, 98% official) ICS. I could be wrong, just something I read somewhere.......

Hmmm..... I would guess it wouldnt work, but go for it. I know I've done stuff like that before.. maybe not copy and paste files from one version of android to another. Of course the usual banter should be adhered. Make a nandroid backup blah blah blah... all that jazz.
Sorry I cant give much info.... and wish I could remember where I read in my previous comment about drivers, etc.
In my opinion, xPlay have better speakers than any Xperia phones and only non-gb drivers that gives loud volume is from official ics beta and Neo L's firmware (wich is basicly the same, in file comparations).
Maybe new features, like clear audio and clear bass, is implemented from Sony to give boost (in quallity of sound, not volumes) to crappy speakers of new Xperia phones...
I too am dissapointed of sound levels of any CM (it's like HALF of sound levels). Can't hear ringing or notications even when standing next to it, and only on gb or some ics roms i can hear my Play ringing from another room.

I still have my R800x and remember how Netizent and several of us all talked about hte cancellation of ICS for our phone... of course I understand the reasons behind it. I still have my trusty R800x though. And I will always keep it even though now i am on a GSM model/

well i dont know because is a verizon (cmda) and i am in mexico (GMS), BUT EVERYTHING BESIDES that works perfectly, i couldnt resiste the idea of having an xperia play wich costed me 60 dollars with music, sim card, caming browsing VS buying a more expensive and regular ipod touch,
