Secondhand Xperia Play - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
Tomorrow I'm going to buy an used Xperia Play for, 200€. Is this a good price fot a used device?
Also are there 'things' I should check before buying?
And after I bought it, is it recomended to install a custom rom, kernel, OC or UV?
thx

I think that's a decent price but I'm pretty sure others around here have seen them cheaper brand new

Got my Xperia Play in February for 180€ - slightly used with minor scratches on the gamepad.
So I actually would think, No. Back then I had the promise of a fully up to date android 4 phone for the price.
Think the fair price should be about 50euros less (my opinion).
Things to check: Display scratches, gamepad buttons, 8gb SD card in the phone, Check IMEI number online to see you don't get a stolen phone.
The phone runs pretty good on its own without custom kernels and whatsoever. But there always is this option to improve speed etc. pp.
As you only have little internal memory, I recommand you to uninstall bloatware, mainly install apps on the sd and ye, have fun

Buy it only if you cant stand touch controls on games and dont mind not having the ics official update. If not get a different phone l.

I want it to be able to play games while on my 3 week vacation, I don't want to carry a lot of portable devices.
But I'm worried about the future of this device :s

I don't think this has much of a future left sony is busy pushing a bunch of other BS devices and seems like its more or less being phased out

This can be cloes, I bought it today, the white one
Maybe I can ask a question here, how do I lock screen? (i thought the button on top but it doenst seem to lock the screen)

I bought mine used last month for $100 with no scratches or marks. You are paying too much for an obsolete device

I am trying to decide whether to buy a Archos 80 G9 or not ?

I am trying to decide whether I should buy an Archos 80 G9 ( with 16 gb) , or the Nexus 7 .
I heard there are touch screen issues with A80G9 , and also reports of frequent applications crashing/freezing. Have those issues been resolved with software updates from Archos ( or a custom rom ) ? Are A80G9 flimsy so that users can damage them even under normal usage ?
To me the selling point of the A80G9 is its size and the 3G via usb option.
Do A80G9 comes with the 3g USB dongle (that accept a SIM card) ?

I have an 101G9, generally satisfied with it, especially after installing CM9 on it. AFAIK 3G usb sticks are sold separately, Archos ones (natively supported by the G9 on stock ROMs) go for about 50 euro i guess, but trevd has managed to get full support for other 3G sticks (mostly Huawei ones if i'm not mistaken, could be others too) in CM9. So if you have one laying around, it'd be worth it i guess.
Otherwise, a Google tablet, quad core, 1 GB ram, with full support by Google, for 200-250 USD/EUR? Hard to beat, if it was available before i got the G9, i'd have gone the Nexus route. Besides, you can always tether the tablet to your phone.
Oh, and about the touchscreen: since i installed CM9 i didn't notice any such problems. Occasionally when the tablet wakes up it takes a while to register touches, but it goes away and is only present on the lockscreen. I've read that this is caused by the lockscreen and that by disabling the locksreen it doesn't happen, but i haven't tried it yet. On Archos ROMs i had "ghost" touches, regardless if the ROM was stock Archos or one of the excellent ones by Surdu_Petru. Touchscreen calibration/reboot fixed those. Apparently Surdu_Petru also succeeded to fix this in his latest ROMs.

How to install CM9 ? I went to cyanogenmod website but archos G9 products are not listed on their devices section.
Where can I find surdu_petru download and instruction ?
I am under the impression that none of the tablets can survive a 1 meter fall. I had a HP touchpad and someone drop it on the carpet. The case cracked and the speakers are not working. Do you think the g9 can be dressed up to absorb a 1 meter fall.
I am considering A80G9 which has a smaller screen than the 101, but bigger than 7" devices.
I have had both and prefer nexus 7. However I had no use for the 3g stick (they don't work on american carriers)

I have no idea if they'd survive a 1 meter fall. It depends on your luck i guess. You'll forgive me for not testing that in practice
About CM9: The G9 isn't officially supported/mentioned on the CyanogenMod website. JackpotClavin made a fully working CM9, you can look here:
Anybody interested in testing a CM9 super-alpha build in a week or so?
All of Surdu_petru's ROMs ([email protected], Root only, Overclock Edition, Root deodex & busybox...) are in the Gen9 development section, have a look.
All ROMs require you to enable SDE (Special Developer Edition) on the Archos, see here how to do it: [TUT] How to Install Official SDE menu and rooted firmware (updated 15 June 2012)

The 80g9 is tough. I bought two. One for me one for my 5 yo son who has autism. His has been dropped, bumped, made its way down a flight of hardwood stairs and just snap it back together and away we go. I'm very surprised as the tablet feels cheap. Ha ha. I'm going to get a tuff-luv silicone case for them for an added bit of protection.
I don't have a nexus. I cannot comment on its build. I know one thing, no expandable storage, is a big no no in my book. I use SD on my tablet all the time.

Yeah, the non-expandable storage could be a deal breaker for some. I don't need really need more than 8/16 GB, but it depends on what you do with it, i guess. I mostly use it for surfing and movies/music, but at home i just stream everything from my main computer.
It's a nice to hear the Archos tabs are durable and can withstand some abuse
Hah, actually my problem with the G9...it broke after a 3 foot (almost a meter) drop on carpet. Granted, it was charging, and the dc jack snapped right off the motherboard. These things are cheaply soldered on. I did drop my nexus 7 on accident from aroud 6 feet, and it survived, not a scratch on it, but it was not charging.

Do the same thing with an iPad and see what happens. No matter what you have a fall on the plugged in charging cable can do damage. Not an Archie defect.

Yes but look at the teardown by scholbert, you will see these dc jacks are cheaply soldered onto the motherboard, they break very easy even when not dropped, they have failed on many people.
i can only share my experience after one day. bear in mind i have hardly used it... mainly because i dont really have a need to as yet. i bought it to use as a media player (replace my wdtv live) and torrent downloader but havent had the time to set it up. obviously the bonus is it has a screen and a fair few apps that may possibly come in useful. it might even get used to read in bed but i have a kindle...enough said.
so at the moment my useage has been mainly downloading a few android hardware id apps because i was scratching my head wondering where the rest of my ram had got to. i honestly thought all 1.5ghz turbo models shipped with 1gb ram. my device proves that theory to be a myth. i have also called tech support who said they would get back to me today... i am still waiting.
CONS
thje touchscreen stopped responding to touches last night. sometimes it would work sometimes it wouldnt. gets very frustrating when you have to keep tapping at something in order for the tablet to do what you want.
not the fastest beast ever. i started browsing and opened about ten tabs and it ground to a halt. this may have caused the touchscreen to become unresponsive as above?
even though i have the omap 4460 running at 1.5ghz and yet i still only have 512mb ram. be very careful about which model you buy and i mean this. the 512mb ram version is obviously a lesser model and i think contributed to the above issue wihen surfing the net. if you can therefore have a look in the menu to see what you are actually buying.
terrible viewing angles.
cheap build quality - if you put slight pressure on the screen it will distort badly.
i have read that one must be very careful with the usb port because it can break very easily. makes me nervous any time i need to actually plug a cable in there.
as per the norm no ac3 support in videos.
tech support is pretty shoddy (this is simply my experience after the call i made yesterday and the fact that the promised call back never arrived).
it has a locked bootloader and development is pretty thin on the ground. it lacks a real community of modders mainly hampered by the locked bootloader. basically it aint that popular in the grand shceme of things and that means we wont get much in the way of custom roms. now before anyone starts...dont get me wrong the devs here are i am sure doing a fine job and i aint putting any of the work down (i havent even tested it yet although i will). what i am saying is that compared to any of the popular devices the modding scene is pretty threadbare.
PROS
Good media player with the ultra bonus that it can browse network shares as well as connect to upnp servers
i see it has an inbuilt media server... this is nice as it saves me having to download an app to do the job
it has an inbuilt remote control app so one can use the phone to navigate menus (havent tested this yet and i probably wont ever use it because i have a hdmi right next to where i sit but hey ho it is there)
apart from the build issue cons above the quality when it is sat in the hand is overall not bad at all. however it does feel a tad flimsy and i would hate to drop it or even have it fall off my sofa.
it is cheap i mean i got mine for about 110 quid brand new but without a box.
archos have pretty much left ics alone. there are a few apps that are pre installed and most of them are useful. there is also no skin on top which makes for a nicer experience in use.
the battery is a surprising. i charged it yesterday and it is still on 69 per cent left. granted i have used it for less than hour mainly jjust looking at my settings trying to figure out what had happened to the ram but hey... i am still quite impressed. lets put it this way it is a major step up from the 70it that i owned for a week or so. the battery in that was truely diabolical.
i think and this is a personal thing that the form factor is the best there is. it makes more sense to me to have a 4:3 format in such a small device but if it cant output at 1080p widescreen then i will be bitterly disappointed (i will therefore reserve judgement on this theory).
it has a kick stand which feels quite weak and one will have to be careful not to topple it over but for watching videos it will come in handy. it can also be used to simply prop it up and leave it as a dedicated digital picture frame.
i will say the audio from the inbuilt speakers aint that bad. it aint good though so dont be expecting hifi but then again i dont think any of the competition is any better.
so that is my experience of the tablet over the last 24 hours. i am going to spend some time with it tomorrow rooting the thing setting it up customising it and trying out some of the roms the devs have worked so hard to produce. hopefully they will go a long way towards making the machine an all round nicer experience. i will also be testing the hdmi output to me tv and seeing how it fares with torrents and media. if it can handle my media, download torrents and work as a digital picture frame then it will be money well spent. if it cant then i will be selling it on.
i will finish with this. it isnt exactly the coolest kid on the block so if style is more your thing go with the nexus. the nexus will also be quite a bit faster and the screen will be far better. however the screen on the nexus is also smaller, there is no way to expand the memory and there is no hdmi port.
pigs and troughs i say. for the price i paid at 100 quid the archos is pretty good value. however i wouldnt pay a penny more. if you can get it cheap then i say buy it (with some hesitation... dont come blaming me when you aint happy) but if you have to pay rrp then i would seriously look elsewhere.
EDIT: Doh i have made silly boo boo. its funny but it is only after i have bought the tablet did i think about the screen size format. obviously me telly is widescreen and the tablet isnt. so while it mirrors everything perfectly it is the same 4:3 format meaning major black bars down the dies. silly really i dont know why i didnt think of this before. it is the final nail in the coffin. so after owning it for about 2 days i have already put my 80 g9 turbo up for sale. OP think long and hard about what you want from a tablet before buying one and then ask yourself will it do all i need it to do. that way you may save yourself the same hassle i now find i have.
Does anyone have a problem with the power button not going on or off unless you plug it in? Mine seems to be doing it. Have a 101 g9 Turbo rooted with ics blue by surdu (thanks to him)

one year ago, I bought two 80g9 tablets. One for me and one for my four year old son. Tablets are great for children with autism. Anyways, his tablet has been down the stairs, off tables, dropped from my jeep to the pavement. Scratches and nothing else happened. I have mine rooted with ice blue and it works really well now. I can only recommend the tablet if rooted with custom rom.

yes this only happens to the g9s that have ice cream sandwich label on the bottom left hand corner of the box. if your box has a honeycomb type bee icon then you are stuck with 512mb regardless of whether or not they are turbo models!
the rough guesstimate archos tech support gave me was any sold after march 2012 should have 1gb of ram but that the ice cream sandwich must be on the box if not say goodbye to the idea of having a decent amount of memory.
i returned mine as faulty anyway after a few days and thankfully got my money back. on top of all the other issues mine would randomly reboot when it was sleeping. i caught it a few times simply booting back to life after it had decided to shut down and restart. glad to be rid and wont ever buy archos again. burn me once i may try again but burn me twice and i will learn my lesson for life.
Thank you for sharing.I also have.:good::good::good:

Mine did this too while running honeycomb. On ics, both work great. Made a huge difference. And with serdu's rom, its smooth sailing now. Just have to reboot once every couple of days. No big deal.

a few things about xperia s

hi everybody!
i am searching to buy a device around 300 euros and i dont know what to choose xperia s or galaxy nexus?
about xperia s,i am consider about buying the device cause i dont know if it will get updated/supported anymore after jelly bean.
also i would like to ask a few things from ppl who own the phone.
first of all, does it work well with ics?(i found a topic said that xperia s works better with gb)
then about games. Can i buy and play games out of the box without any problems, lags etc?
i would like games like gta, nova 3,nfs most wanted etc...
how is the performance generally? does it got too much bloatware?
when we get the jb update, the phone will have the xperia launcher or the jb launcher?
finally, today is it worth to buy the phone or it is too old?
what else can i buy? i consider most about the support of the phone vs the nexus which has a great support from google
Hi,
I have continuous issues with mobile data and WiFi drop out, the phone lags a lot, music shutters a lot. I would not recommend buying an XS, I'm disappointed with this phone. Though when it runs well, it really runs well and the sony features are quite nice, too, as their UI. Also they suck with the updates big time and I don't think we'll see any new Android versions after JB. The phone will be too old by then. Oh, and on GB I never had any issues besides a few random reboots that I have on ICS as well. And if u go for the XS, make sure your bootloader is unlockable, otherwise u won't be able to flash custom kernels. The screen is stunning though

Okay, than gives us the alternatives available at your budget. XS is a fine phone...I expected it to be amazing, but really it's not.
I bought mine for the screen and design. If you want better specs and updates, there are other phones out there. I have rooted mine and installed cyanogenmod, and expect this to support android 4.2 and maybe beyond.
That said, I've played quite a few games without any problems at all, and they really do look great on that beautiful screen!

hmm other alternatives are samsung galaxy nexus, samsung galaxy s2, htc one s and generally phones that cost about 300 euros.
my problem is that i wont buy other phone soon,so i need a device that can last 2-3 years without problems. that's why i am interested about the support of the device. i dont want to buy something and after 1,2 months will be unsupported by the manufacture.
also i want a phone where i can play games without lags etc.

Performace is good ..
I love XS because i like NXT series design..

It is an awesome phone, better than all others you mentioned in my opinion, but you might just go for the galaxy nexus also but keep in mind that it will be only supported until the next nexus is released. Its really a matter if choice.

what do u think about samsung galaxy s3 mini?
is it worth to buy?
unfortunately galaxy nexus isn't available at my country! it was sold out from all the shops and they told me they wont have any more.
also jelly bean will be the last update for the xperia s?
so is still xperia s my best choice?
So you want a phone that the manufacturer will support for atleast 2 years from now( 2013 onwards) .. Simple --Dn't buy XS ..
Sony might support it for 6 months max now coz XS was released in 2012..
I bought XS for its looks n decent performance... It wouldn't wow you on performance or updates but XS will surely attract a lot of attention for it looks ..
Its 2013 now, so check out some phones from 2013 ...

If you want a high resolution display and retina beating sharpness at a reasonable price, then buy the Xperia s, but it might not get updated beyond jelly bean, if you want updates, buy a 2013 model. S3 mini doesn't come close to xperia s in terms of hardware, although in terms off software it is ahead

It is an awesome phone, better than all others you mentioned in my opinion, but you might just go for the galaxy nexus also but keep in mind that it will be only supported until the next nexus is released. Its really a matter if choice.
I also needed a phone for2-3 years and i bought the xperia s (though it was simpler for me as galaxy nexus is not available in India

Considering an Xperia S/SL

Hello,
I'm considering a new phone and have been looking at the Xperia S/SL. I like the feel of the devices and the design. I think having a physical camera button is great! If you have an S/SL, what do you like most about it? What do you like the least? Seems other than 2 additional colors and a bump in CPU speed, the SL is the same as the S. Is that so? Most everything I've seen in terms of customization (new ROMs, etc) talk about the S and not the SL. Can I safely assume that the S and SL are synonymous with regards to rooting, ROMs, etc.?
Thanks,
cesman
Well I must say the XS is awesome, i mena the camera is great (except some autofocus issues, however you can get another app for that) the screen is gorgeous, flaws ... must I say non removeable battery, lacking micro sd port (however 32 gb I think It's fair enough)
I should go for the S if you want to unlock your bootloader
You can flash a custom kernel to have 1.7GHz like SL, no other main difference between S and SL.
The camera is good, and the device runs smooth with some tweaks for custom looks it's the same as other devices, you can always customize Android
Non removable battery and no micro-sd slot doesn't bother me, there is a key reset combo and I don't need more then 32GB
Battery life isn't superb, but also not really bad, you can easily get one day or more. Unless you are a very heavy user or have a lot of apps that sync data
Sent from my LT26i using xda app-developers app
just like my phone have lots of apps that need sync , and thats why i bought smartphone , so it can sync automatically and not to do it manually.
For the price you really can't go wrong, you get a stunning 300+ PPI 720p HD screen, a 12mp Camera and a decent dual core.
It's got a gorgeous UI but since it's an android you're probably going to be skinning it anyways. It feels weighty and it's sturdy, it doesn't feel cheap at all and you feel like you're holding a sturdy phone. Build quality is good, I've dropped it countless times and it's still yet to break for me.
You can unlock the bootloader officially which is good and it really isn't all that hard to root the device and install roms on it.
The downsides I'd say is the non-removable battery which for is a concern and a problem considering the battery isn't all the impressive, It lasts me from 8am in the morning to about 3-4am with low/moderate usage.
32gb for most people should be more than enough.
Again, for the price it's an amazing phone; it ain't the best phone though obviously but if you wanted a good phone you'd be looking at your Galaxy S3s or waiting for the Xperia Z

Interesting choice of adjectives as some would consider "amazing" better than "good". I held the Z in my hand at CES and didn't care for the feel. The ZL has a much better hand feel. If anything, that is the phone I'd wait for... As long as I can get it unlocked. I'm more attached to the Xperia line than the Galaxy... Although it is nice that Galaxy has official CM releases up to the current M1.

Does this mean that the SL's bootloader can't be unlocked?
I'm planning to buy a XS/XSL too, and i can get the SL for a lower price

I've search on here and no one has come right out and said they have unlocked the XSL's bootloader. Sony's own site doesn't show it as a supported model. Where can you get it for less?!

It can also be unlocked but I thought the S would be cheaper then the SL
Just buy the cheapest one, XS roms also work on SL and vice versa
any body make a custom rom for Xperia SL (Real SL)
becuase all of custom rom are Xperia S
I guess all Roms for Xperia s will be compatible with the sl. Not sure though.

Kernels are compatible too, right? I really don't matter if i end up turning the SL into an S, because, as i said before, i can get the SL for a lower price
If for some reason i would like to go back to the stock rom, could i use one of the "stock roms for xperia s thread" that is at the development section or i would have to get the stock official rom for SL?

It'll be better to get an S!! because its tries and tested and u have a lot of ppl to hold u back!! SL is just picking up!
The S is exactly the same as the SL just the SL is overclocked from the factory. I have a SL, shoulda just bought the S and saved some money.
Is something wrong with the device
i want to know is there something wrong with the hardware or anything i really want to buy it but m confused.

I too bought it few weeks ago for same price as my Xperis S got stolen.
And believe me the phone is just too good for its price.
Great Design, Better performance compared to XS, and the most important thing the best display from SONY.

Is the processor ok for casual gaming and telephony...i also planning to play some cool games like dead trigger,Temple Run 2! Can the phone handle this tasks? And also how is XDA support for this phone?
I had wildfire s before ion....wildfire s was stolen....so i bought ion at&t model...phone is very good builded...bettery life is good if u dont use much of the internet...screen resolution and screen size is perfect....
Just a minus feature is cam clearity and less developement...but cam will be better on JB update...the phone is getting JB in may end...JB MAY BE TJE LAST OFFICIAL UPDATE FOR ION.
But ifu need better update suport than go for x sp...it is new device with jb...and may have more update support above jb in future...

U can play temple run and subway surfers flawlessly if u remove some bloatwares...some lags may be due to less free ram..about 300 mb on stock ics!!!
I am playing ironman 3 ...it is nice...gaming xperience is not as much good as quad core 1.5ghz ...obviously..but it is ok...phonecan handle hd games...

As far as its a snapdragon device, I believe it will have a custom rom.

Owned my Ion since AT&T first released it last summer.
IMO, the main concern and cause for mixed initial reviews was simply it shipping with Gingerbread. That isn't an issue any more. It runs ICS perfectly fine for the most part, and is scheduled for JB pretty soon. My gf has a TL, which is the slightly updated S/Ion, and i really don't notice much difference in performance between the two, at least for very normal usage. I know development wise, with benchmarks this and that, you'll read differently...but it wasn't something tangible enough for me to notice between regularly messing with both.
Gaming wise. I regularly play Dead Trigger on high settings, Asphault 7, Doom GLES,etc, and have never had any issues. I know those games scale according to the hardware, but all look great. I've seen the videos that show what Tegra 3 support does, and most effects are subtle enough for it not to be a huge deal. Obviously, those being pretty high requirement games, nearly anything else runs very easily.
The screen. To this day i haven't seen a better screen on a cell phone, including recently messing around with a friend's Z. Contrast is perfect, viewing angles work acceptably, and the pixel density is to the point where i simply can't tell when something is better. Watching top gear in 720p on my Ion and the same episode in 1080p on a Z just after...i couldn't see the difference.
The only bad thing is all on Sony. Considering 76 phones have been released since last June; its pretty realistic that if they do decide to bump the Ion or S to KLP, it won't show up until 2015...but considering an Ion is pretty much free right now, that isn't really a big deal.

Just got my Xperia ZL today!

No regrets! I love it. Amazing screen, awesome camera, nice design, and tons of extras on the software end. I am definitely glad I went with the Xperia ZL!
The story is, I was torn between the HTC One and the Samsung S4. I could not decide. Then I happened to be on the Sony website because I had a $250 gift card for the sony online store. I happened to stumble across the Sony Xperia Z and ZL. I liked everything about it, and the more I thought about it I realized how much more unique it would be to own one. Everyone and their brother is running around with an HTC One and S4 right now. So I went for it. The phone was marked down from $759 to $569, I received 10% off for student discount, minus $250 from the gift card, and I got the sales rep to give me free next day shipping. So all said and done I only paid around $275.00, compared to $600 for an HTC One, and $700 for an S4.
(I was looking for an unlocked phone only so that I could utilize a pre-paid service that runs on AT&T for only $45.00 a month. Save big time in the long run)
So any tips and tricks for the Xperia ZL I should know about? I have model number C6506.
Only con I have about the device, is the battery life. It doesn't seem the best, but I also understand that it has a 5" screen, so what does one expect?

Nice choice i really like more SONY than SAMSUNG and HTC, this is a really amazing phone its the only phone on the market with 75% screen and the rest bessel. i recomend you to update by OTA to the latest version 4.2.2 , camera improve, sound improve, transparent navigation bar and notification. for the battery use Stamina mode and only mark the really important apps you use. for example i have whatsapp, facebook msn, and gmail. remember that all sony devices have a preinstaled screen protector. i recomend not to take it off. and dont scare if you see a scratch on it ( its a protector the real screen is under ). BTW wich color you bought?

Thanks for the response. I went with black. Not sure about the update quite yet. Everything works great, and I don't like to fix things that aren't broken. Will look into it. What does OTA mean?
OTA means: Over The Air via w_lan...

After you update the phone to 4.2.2, I recommend a factory reset. For some reason, it helps.
Im sorry to ask another question but is better than creating another thread I'm going to the US in a month or so and I wanna know something about the price of the phone, everywhere I read the ZL is ~570$ and up. On Amazon the XZL is 514$+tax (I think its 7% on NJ right?) So if I buy the phone from amazon its about 560$ right? Is there another website that I can check to buy the phone? Thanks!

Torn between this baby and the Z
I'm getting a bit of cash soon and decided it's time for an upgrade (My Ion keeps getting grabbed by my kids so i'm left without a phone, besides it will make for a grat media center with my dock), I'm torn between the Z and ZL. so far i've made a list of pro's and cons:
ZL:
pros
-cheaper! (I can get it for less than $500 dollars on amazon, even seen some great deals on it)
-size(it's a bit bigger than the ion but not by much compared to the Z)
-proper camera button( Never understood why android makers never put camera buttons on their phones, its what i missed the most from my N8)
Screen/Bezel ratio(Big screen, small bezel. need i say more?)
cons
-No waterproofing(not a deal breaker but would be nice to have)
-"Limited" dev support(i like to flash custom roms. If i cant find em guess it would be time to learn how to port.
Z
Pros
-Flagship(gets all the attention)
-waterproof
-eye catching design(not that the ZL is ugly, but the glass gives the Z a premium look)
Cons
no camera button
Expensive
Glass tends to pop up and separate from the phone(apparently a design flaw, it's being discussed on the Z forums)
flaps get worn over time and loose waterproofing.
So, ZL users, should i go for it? I dont mind that it has s4pro chipset(same architecture as S600 but underclocked a bit so it's no slouch). WOuld like to hear your thoughts.
I have both currently, and will be returning the Z.
Unless you plan to go underweater with the Z and take pictures, then really that feature is not so great. And having to open/close the flaps constantly is annoying.
You will not regret the ZL, AND when you do buy it, DO NOT LET THE SOFTWARE UPDATE. 4.2 sucks.

I am been happy with the ZL, I can upload files from the web browser and i never was able to do it in the Apple iPhone 4s, i sold it and bought this phone. The only thing I would like Sony to modify in future Xperia products is to switch the speakers and put it on the side or front. It is annoying to have a call and use the speaker when this is in the back, you have to basically turn the phone the other way to hear clearly. If you want to multitask while talking it is painful.

Honestly, I have never been happier than with this phone. My Nexi was great while it lasted, never liked the back being glass. The ZL has everything the 4 had, but just better. Do yourself a favor, and even though the Sony skin is not too cumbersome, just do a custom ROM. You'll enjoy it much more. Sony has made the process of unlocking and flashing almost as painless as possible. I absolutely LOVE the skinny bezel around it. I am happier with this device than I had been with any other.
wonderful, I also wnna one, but it's expensive in my country.
Hi, I have the HTC One Developers Edition on AT&T in the US. I love it but camera is bad.
Question: can the bootloader be unlocked on the ZL?
Does it work on AT&T LTE radios in US? Anyone have any other advise on comparing the ZL to the One?
I sincerely appreciate the help.

Yes, but you need to buy a version of the ZL that has an unlockable bootloader. The SIM unlocked version that Sony, Amazon and most retailers sell can have the bootloader unlocked. For AT&T you need the C6506 (this is the model made for the US and has both AT&T and T-Mobile HSPA and LTE frequencies). The C6503 will only give you HSPA on AT&T so I would avoid it.
I don't like that the One has permanent buttons. The new Google model (from the Nexus 4) is to have the buttons on screen so they can disappear when you don't need them, like with full screen video. Other than that, the ZL has some decent support for AOSP ROMs. Cyanogenmod 10.2 (Jellybean 4.3) is available for the ZL and it runs pretty well. It's still a work in progress but luckily the Xperia Z and the ZL share similar internals so as long as there is CM for the Z, the ZL will have it.
The stock Timescape Sony ROM is decent, and 4.3 will surely come soon, but I feel the Sony ROM is slow. There is pure AOSP available for the ZL but it doesn't include radio support along with other proprietary drivers, so it won't work as a daily ROM, but CM is very close to AOSP.
