Galaxy SIII after Jelly Bean update? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi Guys,
I've had the S3 while it was still on 4.0.4 and experienced the WIFI / Battery issues so I sold it and got a Note 2. My wife is looking to convert to Android from iOS (finally), but the Note 2 is just too big for her to handle.
How are you guys seeing the performance and fixes after the update? Hopefully it's good and maybe post some battery usages so I can compare? Appreciate it.

It highly depends on your usage, settings and apps. My personal screen time is usually between 4 to 5hrs with medium use.

Thanks for the info......have you seen any improvements since ICS?

Which wifi issue? The random dropping?
If yes, that went away for me with the 4.1 update.

Google Now, for me, made it worth the update. I'm able to get through a full day (from getting up till bed) with about 15% left. This includes a live wallpaper, constant synching, Facebook multiple times a day, 30ish emails, medium texting, words with friends, and much surfing of the Web.
However, everyone's experience is different. I was just listing mine to give you an idea.

[Q] Anyone considering returning the E4GT due to bad battery life?

I am one of the unfortunate souls who is experiencing terrible battery life due to the AndroidOS bug. I feel like I spend half my waking hours trying to figure out what is causing it and doing different things to my phone improve my battery life.
I'm definitely getting sick of it and while I realize that Samsung/Sprint may eventually come out with a software update that fixes the problem, I'm not sure I'm willing to wait since it could take months (and the issue was supposedly fixed for GS2 phones in 2.3.4).
At this point, I'm considering going back to the Moto Photon--it's battery life is simply amazing. My only issue with the Moto is its unusable camera.
Anyone else getting as frustrated as I am and considering jumping ship to another phone?
What have you done to fix it?
Are you saying that you still have the bug even aftera factory reset ?
Why not just take it back and have them give you a new one since you obviously have a defective phone?
Also how many hours are you actually getting out of the battery?
I don't see any other phone worth switching to and I have had them all. Each with their own specific problem. But this one here is as good as it gets

I've tried just about everything that has been mentioned in the AndroidOS/battery life thread (reset, wifi, autosync) but I'm still getting only 12 hours of battery life on a good day, 8 hours on a bad day
I might try exchanging the phone, but I'm hesitant to do so due to the LOS bug (I have not experienced this with my phone as of yet).
Honestly, while I love the phone in many other ways, I'm about to throw the thing out the window since 8 hours of battery life is simply not acceptable to me

That doesn't mean anything to me. What's the display on time? How good/bad is the cellular signal?
Exchange it bro. Ive had two of these phones so far and none had this problem. I'm getting like 24-30 hours battery with like 4-5 hours screen on time. This phone had awesome battery. Download an apps called better battery stats. This will show wakelocks and processes that are draining the battery. Good luck man.

On a good day, the display is on for less than 30-45 min. On a bad day, the phone display time is somewhere between 90-120 minutes.
I pulled 16 hours ojt of my battery yesterday with over 12 on wifi and i was at 40 percent. I have to use wifi at work as i have no signal and when i do get signal its roaming. I would say that my conditions at work are far from ideal but this phone is great. My old phone would die before 1130(evo shift).

return it.
mine doesn't seem to get the android os bug unless i'm on a custom kernel. 1 week stock, no problems, 3 days on custom problems each day, back to stock + root and no problems for 48 hrs.
i still have to be 100% sure that my phone didn't like the kernel though so another test will be coming up after a few more days of observation.

I had the issue with the stock kernel and custom kernels. I'm just going to hold out until we can get a AOSP build and hope that using as little of Samsung's code fixes it.

I'm on stock and have nothing out of the ordinary installed. Out of curiosity, do you have a google account with full sync turned on?
Lol 8 12 hours isn't bad with a stock battery and 4.5 inch screen. If you are in a poor reception area it could be that. Otherwise you have alot of Apps running in the background.
My advice : root it and extended battery.

I average 15-20 hours easily on a charge, with a full sync google account
Everything Sync'd Listed below:
- Google+ Notifications
- Music
- Books
- Contacts
- Gmail
- Picasa Web Albums
- Calendar
If anything else can be Sync'd I have not run across it. I also have my Tapatalk set to notify me of PM's, and updates to Subscribed topics, I removed the accuweather widget because it only updates every 3 hours and installed Weatherbug Elite and set it to update every 30 minutes. On top of all that I browse the web regularly to visit sites that are websense'd at work, and I play dungeon hunter 2, and asphalt 6 on my lunch break. At home the phone sits on my desk until its time to pass out, only used for my Rift Mobile authenticator.
This is a real bug, with android
the system/0 process goes crazy and chews up the battery.
I get about 12 hours with everything disabled (other than gmail sync) and suspend/0 chews up battery
well documented here
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=16721
it's a gingerbread issue, if you haven't experienced on the galaxy, you will soon
I'm also considering returning this great phone with crappy software until google releases a version of android that works.
by that time there may be a new "best android phone"
Why does the bug seem to affect the gs2 more than other phones? For example, I've never seen it mentioned on the photon forums

Excellent! with heavy use of ~ 200 emails a day 1h on internet and about 30min looking up news and 1-2h of calls i get 12-16h.
I tried the best I knew how and I couldnt kill the battery for 2 days. I ran everything at once (not truly everything) and it just wouldn't die.

Battery is ridiculous. After diagnosing my wifi wakelock issue and installing jedi rom I get 4 hoursish per 1% when it goes into sleep, and that's in a basement mostly with horrible reception.
im getting worse battery life ever since the multiwindow update. not sure if anyone else has the same issue, but it seems like tmobile users are complaining about the same thing. it might be due to lack of battery calibration.
Well, here's a visual. Just achieved this impressive feat. 81 HOURS on pure battery! Almost 3.5 hours of screen-on time. I choose to not utilize my phone much over the holiday weekend, so that explains the low screen-on time. Regardless, I think these results are more than impressive. Nothing was restricted on my device. Live wallpaper going the whole time, auto screen brightness (usually a high setting), WiFi going, auto-syncing from emails to Facebook to Twitter, watched a bit of "The Dark Knight Rises" in full-1080p HD, made a bunch of miscellaneous phone calls. I am more than amazed at this phone and its battery. Haven't seen anything close to this in more than five years or so. These results are after updating to 4.1.2 with multi-window, and these are the best results I've ever gotten on this device.
On a side note, if anyone is getting results like the first poster with 8+ hours of screen-on time, it would really help if you described what you typically do with your phone and what you may have done to your phone. Just posting a screenshot tells nothing. You could be web browsing all day with your screen set to 20% brightness, and nothing more. What are you doing? Watching movies? Listening to music? Emailing? Texting? And if you're rooted that makes a ton of difference, so the results wouldn't be exactly truthful or accurate I should say.

Sorry for the lack of detail, I should have included that. I was browsing the net on wifi, playing Words, emailing/texting, various phone calls, watching youtube videos, and spending time on the XDA app. (of course)
I'm rooted and using clean rom 3.5. Auto brightness is on and I'm about 50% on the slider.

^^^ Thanks. So, that does change things, since you're rooted. The reason why I'm making a big deal about it, is because your results (and anyone else rooted) aren't typical results of someone stock. So a person not knowing any better would assuming they'd get your battery results from stock.

Clean Rom 3.5, I also make sure and close out of anything I'm not using. I also use the ES Task Manager widget to clear my ram before I power down for any period of time.
That's about it, besides not having a ton of widgets running.
I didn't get much over six hours of screen time with my Jedi Rom, but in fairness to it, it was my first rom and I don't think I did it quite right, installing other things with it that probably weren't compatible.

Like Dr. Evo points out, one of the great things about custom roms is they get rid of all the bloatware from ATT and other carriers. Stock I was lucky to have 1gb of free ram at any time, now I'm always around 1.1-1.2gb free without much effort on my part.

Battery life on the Sprint Galaxy S3 L710

I'm a new android user. I'm using the LiquidSmooth 4.2.1 JellyBean Beta 2. The problem I'm having is with my battery life. I seem to average about 5-7 hours of battery life which is crazy if you ask me. This isn't a ROM issue either because it was the same way on the stock 4.1.1 Android OS.
I'm using JuiceDefender now and that seems to help a little. I know things like disabling 3G and WiFi can help but I use these things often. Can anyone offer any useful suggestions to extend my battery life?
Thanks in advance

The quickest way to answer this is to suggest you use search. There are already dozens of posts/threads about this. A lot depends on signal and applications running. Do some reading, more than likely you will find the answer already posted.

Absolutely something wrong with your phone and or battery. Had an S3 since July '12, rooted and ran FreeGS3 and had all day battery. Lost that just before Xmas (actually stolen) and got another S3, and this time decided not to do all that ROMming and flashing and stayed stock 4.1.
Same all day battery life with WiFi on, 3G on, Google/Gmail Sync on (i like my push Gmail), several email accounts polling, etc. I just use my phone, no gimping with apps like JuiceDefender (which i detest with a passion).
Heres a question, what's your screen on time? Cuz if your phones dead at 7 hrs with 5 hrs screen on your first option is to adjust screen settings and the second and 3rd option are put the phone down sometimes and/or keep a charger handy

Depending on how often I use my phone I get anywhere between 9-11 hours on light to moderate use. Meaning listening to music, Twitter, Instagram, email, and texting
It could be the 4.2, because it isn't completely "stable" yet. I'm on stock 4.1 rooted, with screen brightness on I'd say 30-40%, with light to moderate use and can get 11-15 hours easily. This includes texting, maybe a few phone calls, lots of music, and some Facebook or XDA on a WiFi connection.

Well after checking out the Kernelizers thread and flashing the KT kernel onto my Galaxy S3 and installing ROM Toolbox, my battery life has greatly improved. I also installed DS Battery Saver Pro. I just came to work. Left at 7:05AM, put on some music, and by the time I got to work at 8:05AM, my phone battery only dropped 3%. Normally it would drop at least 10% in this time so what I did is clearly working

DNA or GneX

Ok so i have a DNA and i have a Gnex im having trouble deciding which i should keep for the long run. Obviously specs are on the DNA's side, but customizability is with the Gnex. My main question is battery and signal, i havent had my gnex long enough to see how these perform with the Dna so i was hoping you could help. My Gnex is rooted running Muzzy's latest 4.3 build im using Tinykernal also i am using the hyperion 3800 mah extended battery. Will this combination last as long as my dna throughout the day if not longer, and will the phone be able to hold on to somewhat of the same signal that my dna has? Thanks.
i'd hold on to the Dna cause it has better hardware than the gnex
and i'm sure the DNA has decent development no?
In terms of updates Gnexus wins all the way to KLP. Knowing HTC practice, you may not even get KLP

The DNA doesn't have support like the gnex obviously, but the DNA does have that pesky Sim card error problem that is very annoying.
comments on battery life and signal strength between the 2? Like I said I use the extended battery I know the stock nexus battery can't last all day to save its life.
Friend of mine has the DNA and I've never heard him complain about battery, and he's outlasted me before too.
Development? I think they have some decent stuff going on, not sure.

Thats if you live and breathe your phone. I hardly ( and this is the MAJORITY of the users) ever go past 1:30 display time. To anyone who goes over this "average" time has serious issues and should stop to think if most of the interaction is between a computer or actual people. If you view movies and things like that, thats another story but equally annoying. Its a small screen, I can't possibly see myself enjoying a movie in a 4.65 inch screen as a lot of the details are lost but thats just me.
On topic: The GN is a great phone but only due to the work the developers around here. You will receive biased opinions here and thats mainly because many if not most of us have not had a first hand experience with the DNA. So with that said, go with the GN lol

The DNA runs circles around our phones spec wise, the gnex is getting old, given the gnex will last a long time even after google drops support for it, but your DNA will probably be a device you'll want to use more, bigger screen, better specs, and the development is just fine there.

The DNA gets 2-3 more bars than the Galaxy Nexus, but that doesn't mean better download/upload speeds. The RAZR M usually has the same signal strength as the GalNex, yet 10 times outta 10 the RAZR M beats the GalNex in download speeds... Though ping and upload are about the same. So if you're concerned about that, run speedtests on both in a Verizon store.
I don't like the non-removable battery and storage (if you're going to limit the storage with no SD card option, at least make it 32 GB....), and I really don't like the plug over the micro USB port. Also, 9/10 or so used DNAs on eBay have scratched screens... Not sure if that matters to you, but yours will probably fall victim, it's apparently not Gorilla Glass.
Also, I'm done with HTC, ever since they ****ed over the Thunderbolt owners with updates and releasing the kernel source, I think a lot of us have been weary. How many phones can you say have 4.3 on stock or a ROM? There's the Google Play edition phones, the Nexus line (save the One and S).... Not much else I'm sure. Most devices don't have it anyway.

Thinking of getting a Note 2

Hey everyone,i
Im thinking of getting a Note 2 (coming from a S3) in the next couple of days. Im thinking this is going to be a great device as I have a Note 8 tablet and love the flexibility I have when using it for work or school. For those that still have the Note 2, do you still think its a great phone to have? Do you think that its still a good phone to get?
Some background information. Im looking to use the Spen to take notes in meetings, class and impromptu situations. I use One Note and Evernote, so it would be good to have my notes sync, and im looking for a phone that has better battery life. My current S3 is have a good day if it last more then 5 hours (usually little under 2 hours of screen time), and I heard that the battery on this phone is great. I have several emails/apps sync due to work so im sure is helping to drain my battery, but am hoping the Note 2 will be able to handle it. Im not looking for a magical battery, but if it can last at least while im at work (will be thrilled if it lasts 12 hours)..
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Sounds like it will meet your requirements. Im getting at least twice the battery life you get with your s3. The spen is cool, I rarely use it. My note 2 is about to go up for sale. Im getting a g2 or nexus5. Pm me if interested.

I recently upgraded to the Note 2 from a Galaxy Nexus and am Loving this phone. I've used it for a couple of weeks now and have not encountered anything to change my opinion. My setup consists of the stock 4.1.2 Touchwiz rom w/Nova Launcher & LMT, stock battery, and an Imak Cowboy textured case.
Coming from the GN, I am well aware of life with a crappy battery. The stock 3100 mAh battery in my Note provides at least 6hrs of screen on time on a bad day and nearly 9hrs on a good day (strong signal and available wifi). I can typically wring out 8hrs of screen time and 16hrs total time from this 1yo battery and stock rom (unofficial 4.3 seemed slightly less efficient).
What I love most about this phone is that it's nearly perfect out of the box. There is zero lag, no matter what or how many apps I have open, the battery life is phenomenal, and the screen looks great and is the perfect size for me. I only recently flashed a 4.3 rom (Slim Bean) because I am so accustomed to running the latest, most feature packed roms on my previous nexus devices...went back to the stock 4.1.2 rom after only one day because I missed some of its features.
I was hesitant to get the Note 2 because I used nexus devices since the Nexus S and was concerned about bloatware and lack of support or custom roms. Ended up making the jump and then found out that I don't need any of the mods that I found essential for the Nexii (Nexuses?). With you coming from the S3, I think this is a no-brainer; the Note 2 is similar but bigger and far better. Also, used Note 2 prices are coming down on Swappa and Craigslist. Ebay prices are still high, but I think this is still a better bargain than the Note 3 at its current price.

Thanks Braneless! Thats what I am hoping for. I finally found one on Swappa that I bought and should be getting it in a couple of days. Im really hoping the battery does last as none of my previous phones got great battery life no matter what I did compared to others (Roms, kernels, tweaks, etc).
Im optimistic that it will work out, thanks again.

Since battery is one of your concerns I just want to throw in there since it's a used Note that it might be due to a bad battery. I have my Note since Dec and my battery does not last as long as it once did. I still get good usage out of it tho. Went from 5-6 screen on time with 3g/4g or 8 with wifi to 4 on 3g/4g and about 5 1/2-6 on wifi. It also drains faster while on idle but still outlasts my other phones (EVO LTE & GS3).

Thanks Ray....the one I got from Swappa had 2 Anker batteries and I after adding my programs and various accounts/syncs i got around 7 hours of usage and 3.5 screen time. This was completely stock, so i am going to test a custom kernel then possibly some custom roms and go from there

Thanks! Im going to play around with it but im still eyeing the Note 3. With my thinking of leaving sprint by next Summer, I might stick with the Note 2 or move to the Note 3 (thanks to Swappa) until I make my decision next year.
