Xperia S treats PC like charger, PC doesn't recognize device - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

Okay, I realize this is quite a common problem for Xperia S (the SonyMobile help forums are full of various Xperia S connectivity issue topics) but after spending hours and hours googling this problem I still haven't found a cure for it. So I'm hoping the supersmarts of the XDA community will help me find a solution.
Background:
* It's a normal Xperia S, updated to 4.0.4 officially (6.1.A.2.45).
* I did root it a few months ago to be able to get rid of some system apps (I made sure all the removed sysapps were non-critical) and to get more functionality out of it, but the problem didn't start after rooting. I used SystemApp Remover to backup all system apps (see attachment for applist).
* All essential root apps were installed, like LuckyPatcher, SuperSU etc.
Problem:
* One fine day (I can't pinpoint when but I noticed it last week) the phone wouldn't recognize PC anymore and neither did the PC recognize the phone.
* This is not correlated with rooting as I mentioned earlier - after initial rooting, this problem did not occur.
* When connecting to PC via USB, the phone treats the connection as a charger and just starts charging, the PC doesn't recognize anything at all, as if nothing had been connected via USB.
Tried so far:
* Tried different USB cables, 2 different PC's, different USB slots, tried disabling and re-enabling USB devices on PC.
* Tried re-installing PC Companion.
* Tried booting the phone in Safe Mode (volume down method).
* Tried Settings reset and Factory data reset (the phone is currently vanilla, just rooted).
* Rolled back all changes to system apps and reinstalled them with no issues.
Misc Info:
* I read about the MTPapp having a bug in Xperia S, something like a memory leak where it gets too big if Internal Storage is very full (which isn't the case, maintained 10GB of free space at all times + currently it's all wiped) but the funny thing is, I couldn't find an MTPapp in processes/all apps.
* One of the suggested fixes was navigating to All apps -> MTPapp, and clearing data, but there is no such app in the phone, just a "MTP extension service" which is idling at 0.00b.
* I'm not sure whether Xperia S should have a USB connection type setting in Settings -> Xperia -> Connectivity, but for me there is no option there to choose between USB connection. There's only a "Install PC Companion" setting, which I have set to "on" and a "No trusted hosts" setting which is grayed out so I can't access it.
***
Getting quite desperate and hoping you guys have some clever knowledge on what I should try to do. I am a little bit scared to take it back to the store due to root although I could try to unroot it and then go. So here's hoping

Check THIS app. It work for me.

Installed the app, granted SU, connected phone to PC, still acts as charger is connected, PC doesn't recognize phone whatsoever, tried it with both Media Transfer and Mass Storage modes..
Thanks for the suggestion though..
Edit: Maybe I should download a standalone MTPapp from another Xperia S and install it? Any suggestions?

Have you tried usb debugging on?

Check the phones USB port for debris. Possible some lint/paper blocking contacts. I know its the obvious but sometimes it's the small things giving trouble. Maybe even a 3rd USB cord

# check device manager as well in the windows !!! that might be a problem,

Ps unless you use the sd-mounter.apk from xda- should make a trick either way

@ ToledoJab.. tried the debris approach and a 3rd USB cable (and 3rd PC)to no avail.
@ abd_alazeez2002.. I am not sure what the cw recovery is so it's probably safe to assume I don't have it.
@ marcoplo.. Should I just get these apps in the phone and install them? Device manager shows no trace of the device.. it could very well be that the drivers are corrupted but I haven't found a way of reinstalling them as the computer doesn't recognize anything when I connect the PC.. Any place to find an installer package for the drivers or the drivers themselves?
Edit: @ marcpolo - I managed to install only the UsbTransportService.apk, while the others gave an error of "Application not installed".. Should I just move this to a system folder, and if so, which one (I have root explorer so can access everything).

Copy and past to the $\system\app use the root explorer to do that, then the sub menu fix permission and restart try it if it work
if won't work run fix permission in CMW see if it work !!
did you try on other computers to see if it work
if not work my suggestion will be to re flash system !
what worries me is that device manger does not see it

Could you maybe direct me towards some links as to the flashing and a stock rom..
I tried the sd-mounter software posted above in this topic and had no luck..

You may want to try using linux. You can boot a usb drive and try flashtool then. I can give more info if you want

I know next to nothing about Linux and I don't have any friends who have it so that's not an option at this point..
So should I try to unroot the phone with OTA Rootkeeper (if so, should I uninstall all root-needing apps before or after unrooting, and what about SU) and take it to the warranty service with my fingers crossed or should I try to flash the phone (any methods of doing this without having to directly connect to PC)?
I read somewhere on Xperia forums that someone with the same problem had taken the device to the warranty service only to get a reply about static electricity having fried something on the mainboard, thus rendering the device unable to connect to PC.. Sounds sketchy, but it's a possibility, as nothing seems to be helping and due to the fact that this problem occurred on it's own so to speak.. =/

I had exactly the same problem. I solved this very easy... Connection cable was just charging cable and you need usb data cable

fix permissions in recovery..
i also got that problem, but the problem was the usb 3.0 port

Moskwiz, if you still alive - what was the end of the story?
Did you try the hardware repair

I have the same problem in a diferent way. HELP
Hi,
My xperia s is not opening just keep restarting him self and the pc don't recognize it, so I can't boot into fastboot and flash a clean firmware...

i do have the same problem with my xperia p. i dont think its a problem with hardwared because when i connect my phone to another pc it works fine. When i formated my pc and installed windows once again it worked and after some days again the problem started i think its a problem with windows updated because after i installed all the updates it started to show the problem.

[Q] HTC Desire HD Charging with USB but no USB Connection

As my topic says, when plugging in the USB to the computer the phone starts charging, but no USB connection to the actual computer. I tried with debugging on and off, tried with several ROMs but nothing changes it.
I tried to connect another phone thorugh the cable and that works fine so i know its not the cable thats the problem.
The version im running now:
Baseband version: 12.54.60.25P_26.09.04.11_M2
Kernel Version:2.6.32.39-cyanogenmod-g99f1050
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-7.0.3.DesireHD
Anyone got any idea and wanna help me?
goto setting>Connect to PC> and make sure "Ask Me" is ticked.
Im guessing that it doesnt ask you what you want to do and the phone by default charges i.e "Charge Only"

I even tried the phone to another computer and its the same there.. no reaction, so i think it´s something in the phone or kernel?
You could try reflashing the ROM without a full wipe (wipe Cache though). I doubt it's an inherent bug with ROM / Kernel otherwise there would be a flood of similar posts (checked nightlies as well).
I have already tried that with 3 different roms and its the same with all 3 roms

So that rules out problems with ROM or Kernel.
Next, need to rule out PC. Have you got another PC or laptop you can try?
Have you tried different USB ports (if using front ones, use back or any others that are on a different MB header).
Forgot to ask, when you say you tried mounting as USB Disk, do you mean you do get the option if you press the Charge Only icon in the notification bar of the phone?
And also, to rule out the SD card, do you have a card reader you can try it with?

Yes.. thats how i tried to mount it as an usb disk... i have tried mounting it in Clockwork Recovery Mod aswell... nothing there either :/

Last hope then is that it's a problem with the sdcard itself. Do you have a card reader on any of your pc's / laptop you can try?
Nope, no card reader. But i can send stuff to the phones sd card through wifi using myphoneexplorer
How can i install stock rom and kernel through clockwork? Or any way without having usb connection?

Unless the ROM you want is listed in ROM Manager and the Kernel in Kernel Manager (neither of which are fantastically up to date) then you will need to either find another way to get them on your SDCard or visit the the XDA site in a browser or XDA App, find the files you want and download them directly to your phone via the ether. You should then move them to the root of the sdcard and use Terminal Emulator to check the MD5SUM of the file before flashing.
well.. getting the files to the sd card is no big problem using myphoneexplorer over the wifi at home. but where can i find the stock rom with any mods that i can put on the sd and flash with clockwork mod?

Which stock ROM are you looking for? If it's the stock HTC OTA Gingerbread one them here - http://www.iloveabath.co.uk/index.php?dir=RUUs/
(Thanks go to @andyharney for that).
You mention stock with mods? Could you expand on that one and I'll get yo a link to the most appropriate ROM that suits?
Off topic: MyPhoneExplorer is great. Been using it since my early Sony Ericsson days - the original phone it was designed for, I believe.
Thanks alot mate!!

There's a PD98IMG version of an UNROOTED (you will lose root again) the Gingerbread ROM, give me a few minutes and I'll see if I can find it.
[EDIT] Sorry, a PD98IMG will allow you to copy to sdcard root, reboot into Bootloader and it will flash automatically.
[EDIT 2] - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13329691&postcount=96
They're Megaupload links though but you should be able to access them in browser. Take first link, rename it to PD98IMG.zip

[Q] Problems with SEUS

Hi - more questions, but this time its a problem I'm having. Before flashing the latest O2 UK firmware I want to decrypt my current Orange France 2.3.2 firmware in case I need to go back to it. However, I'm assuming that I need to connect with SEUS once (and possibly update whatever they have) so I can then find the current firmware files in the SEUS folders on my PC.
Anyway, the long and short of it is that when I am told to hold the back button while connecting the phone, NOTHING HAPPENS. I've tried loads of times, tried reinstalling SEUS, nothing. Some drivers started to install, and all seems OK there - no yellow triangles in device manager. Also installed PC Companion (automatically offered when I connected the phone with it turned on). It installed drivers then too. All fine. I tried using a different USB cable too - no luck.
Any clues ?? Searched Sony Ericsson site and it is bare of useful info. Did a search here too but no luck either.
Thanks in advance.
and you followed the instruction as they say:
1. switch off the phone
2. wait for 30 seconds or so (pref. remove the battery and insert it)
3. hold the back button
4. insert usb..
it should detect the phone no matter what. i hope there is some juice in battery...
I've heard that SEUS and PCC now are able to detect rooted phones and don't let you reinstall stock software. It needs the stock build.prop
Thanks for the replies. I have been pulling my hair out on this. I realised that it is to do with my SECM USB Flash drivers being faulty or something.
I tried to use PC Companion and it got to the same bit where SEUS crashes - right when it wants to get in to flash mode on the phone. It hangs the computer up.
I have googled like crazy and have seen reports of others PCs hanging at the same place. BUT, I can't find a way to repair or reinstall the USB Flash drivers - I've reinstalled SEUS and PC Companion plenty of times, with my anti-virus off. And tried to get in to flash mode with the anti virus off.
Problem I think I had is that a lightning storm stopped my first installation of PC Companion - I think it may have screwed something.
Any ideas how to fix the usb flash drivers ???
Have you tried de-installing SEUS and PCC, then in device manager search for and remove the USB Drivers for SEMC.. then reboot.. then re-install SEUS..
??

Thanks - tried that but no luck unfortunately. Couldn't even see anything in Device Manager to do with SEMC, SEUS or Sony Ericsson - was looking under USB Controllers. When I did a full search I did find plenty of traces of the drivers GGSEMC (Gordons Gate Flash USB drivers) in both system32 folder and in the Sony Ericsson folder left over after uninstalling SEUS. Didn't want to just delete the ones in system folders.
you could try doing the "update driver" operation - my driver was called Sony Ericsson seechri (or something like that!).... see if you can repair..
Perhaps you could try on ur friends pc. Just to confirm that seus is the problem.
SOLVED (sort of)
Thanks for the advice.
OK - I tried on another machine (why didn't I do that 6 hours earlier ). Works fine on Win7 64 bit. Maybe the drivers didn't get installed properly on Win XP ?? Going to have a go rolling back to an earlier restore point on the XP machine to see if I can get it working.
Anyway, SOLVED. Thanks

[Q] USB Device Not Recognized

Good day,
I'm having problem with my DHD unable to be recognized in my Win 7 PC. I have already install HTC Sync and also tick on "Ask Me" for Connect To PC setting. I'm running on stock 3.13.707.4 ROM with S-ON and unrooted. Even restart to Fastboot my PC still unable to recognized my DHD.
From Googling it shows many Desire having USB-Brick problem, does this problem also applied to DHD? Is it my phone is hit by USB-Brick? Any guide to solve this problem? I've tried flashing older ROM via Bootloader and PD98IMG.zip but it won't allow saying something like the ROM is older version.
I just bought this used phone for about a week so I'm still not sure on how to solved this problem. any helps is much appreciated.
are you using the original cord that came with the phone? just any old usb cable won't work
also you can't flash a new rom without rooting and gaining S-OFF, you're unrooted and S-ON, that's why you get the "version is older" message

I bought the phone and it came with 1 cord (with HTC label) that can be connected to the charger, I guess there are only 1 cord for charging and connect to PC? This is the cord that I use. In addition to that I have also tried Motorola, Sony Ericsson (both also for Android phone) and Nokia cord but all can't.
The ROM is actually older version stock ROM from RUU.exe. I saw from few Desire thread they were using this method to restore the ROM to before the USB Brick condition so I thought to try it.
BUMP!
Anyone know what should I do to resolve this problem?
Are you running the very latest HTC Sync on your PC? I'm using 3.0.5606. You can get it here: http://www.htc.com/www/help/
Also, connect your phone and go into Device Manager on your PC. Check to see if you have an entry for Android USB Devices and that the phone shows up. See attached screenshot for how mine looks. This is the best place to check to see if your PC has installed the drivers correctly.
In answer to your question about the cable, yes it's the same cable that attaches to the PC or to the mains charger. I've sometimes had connection problems caused by a dodgy cable, but I've used others apart from the HTC one without issues.
Edit: Also, when you install HTC Sync it should warn you to disable Antivirus software during the installation. This can be really important! I ignored it the first time around, thinking it was just a silly precaution, and had loads of problems with the phone not being recognised. Had to uninstall, temporarily disable AV, and re-install HTC Sync. Once it has finished installing, you can turn your AV back on.
Thank you for your reply preacher6.
Yes, I'm using the latest HTC Sync, v3.0.5606, just downloaded yesterday and reinstall everything.
When my phone connected to the PC it didn't appear as Android USB Device on my Device Manager, it only appear as Unknown Device in USB Controller:
So I guess I can rule out the cable as I have tried about 4 cables already.
For the installation part, I have disable the anti virus and also running the setup program as administrator. When installing there is no problem whatsoever that crop out.
Another point is, even on Fastboot it appear as Unknown Device in the PC.
I would try to update the driver manually - right click on the Unknown device, go to "install driver" or "update driver", then browse to the "Program Files\HTC\HTC Driver" folder. See if it picks up and installs the correct driver.
I've tried manually update the driver as per your advise but it says there is no compatible driver in that folder even though androidusb.inf is in that folder.
I'm running Win 7 64bit. does the driver also work for 64bit OS?
Should do, yes, I'm on Win7 64 bit myself. There is this folder on my PC:
C:\Program Files (x86)\HTC\HTC Driver\Driver Files\Win7_x64
Is the unknown device present when the phone isn't connected? Just to make sure that is actually the phone - if it's still there when the phone isn't connected, it's some other device.
Otherwise try uninstalling the unknown device and then rebooting the PC, then forcing the installation of the drivers again.
The folder is same as yours.
The unknown device does not present when my DHD is not connected, so I'm certain it is the phone that appear as unknown device.
I have tried uninstalling the unknown device > reboot PC > installing the driver but it still won't install.
Another thing is, I check on the Device Manager > Unknown Device properties > Details" for it's Hardware Ids and it shows as USB\UNKNOWN. I think it should show a strings of the device id? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Yep, there should be a proper device ID string, on charge mode mine shows a hardware ID of USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0CA2&REV_0226&MI_01.
At this point the best thing I can suggest is to try on another PC. If it works, your drivers are screwed up and you'll need to strip them and reinstall. But if it doesn't work on another PC, it's possible you have a hardware problem with the phone.

I need help too (HTC Desire Z device)
Is it hardware problem? (I already purchased new system board).
For me it looks like hardware problem, because device does not accept bus address, do not show USB strings/VID/PID (Tried different cables/PCs/OSes (I have OpenSUSE linux, but phone does not connect to usb on any PC, Windows PCs even do not understand that something plugged in)).
No problems with USB-connector (checked resistance), but I do not see pull-down resistance with my tester.
But all other functions work well.
UPD. Tried to connect from FASBOOT/HBOOT/Android - the same result, device does not accept bus adress. Additionally it charges without problems, but when I connect phone to USB no pop-up/information at top bar appears.

Sorry, it looks like I explained my question wrong (I'm Russian, and English do not native to me). Let me try reformulate:
You said "Yes. Holla if you still need help" so I believe that you were able to fix "Device not recognized" problem. So I'm asking - how did you do it? Did problem was hardware or software?
For me (look at symptoms at my previous message) it looks like dead USB controller in phone. But maybe it very strange software problem (USB-controller firmware damaged)?
Did I explain it clear now?
Install the SDK on PC and update all android versions.
Well guys it was just my PC, i made a system backup for four days and that was all the problem(the USB port of my PC)

After installing and updating SDK...go into platform folder and open it. Hold mouse in field and hold shift and right click mouse. Chose "open cmd here"..that will open a cmd prompt window. In regular mode on phone, type "adb devices" should return numbers (ex: hta3829g)..if in bootloader mode, type "fastboot devices" should return numbers.
This SDK helps PC see your phone when its plugged in. Especially handy when a PC won't install drivers for your phone

Are you also stating that your device will no longer charge when plugged in?

[Q] How do you transfer data from the phone to computer via USB Cable

I have no option for usb data transfer. Just MTP and PTP. When trying to drag and drop I get "Calculating the time required to copy the files". It copies nothing.
Airdroid, wifi explorer, kies doesnt transfer a damn thing.
ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!
Make sure that your drivers have been installed properly, first off (I think this is a big problem for a lot of ppl). And on the phone, in Settings > Storage > Menu > Computer Connection > "Media device (MTP)" is checked. (I also believe unchecking "USB Debugging" in Developer options can help, too).
If your drivers are set up, you should get a prompt (assuming you're on Windows 7) to "open folder and view files" and you'll get an Explorer window. Just drag/drop files on the device.
You can also use a WiFi FTP transfer app (I wanna say AirDroid is a popular one?). Some prefer it this way.
How can you tell if the drivers have been installed properly?
I can drag and drop one file at a time but nothing more

If you plug your phone in and don't get an error. And in device manager it should show up as "Galaxy Nexus" or "Samsung Galaxy Nexus".

Sounds like a possible issue with your setup. I just recently re-installed a fresh 32bit Windows 7 install on my MacBookPro, and without any driver tweaking or anything I was able to connect and drag/drop files back and forth.
I do have issues with my desktop and plan on wiping it.

MTP can be finnicky but there's no technical reason why it can't work just fine (as I said it works perfectly for me and others here).
Have you tried something like AirDroid (linked above)? Or if you're just sitting on WiFi you can always just upload to DropBox (Google Drive) and download on the phone/PC.
airdroid hasnt worked for me. I'm not positive but I think there are certain files that won't transfer via cloud.

Should be able to transfer anything. Don't see any restrictions to it.
Is your Kies properly Installed?
Hi,
If your Samsung Kies was properly installed (means took quite time for installing Driver for Samsung devices). Your phone should be detected once connected via USB cable. Some devices may have different situations. Exp. file transfer in SamsungGalaxyTab10.1 will not display exact time for file transfer Window. Once device connected via USB cable, and Your device's Name Pops Up in your window, means it's successful. Transfer shd not be problem.
Sometimes, Phone may not the cause, perhaps ur Pc/laptop might limited capability for Kies Support.
If your case is different, perhaps you can uninstalled and reinstalled it in control panel. Uninstalling Kies will not remove ur Phone's Driver data. Hope this Helps.
Sincerely,
whitefang
**** takes forever to transfer via usb. is this a known issue on the nexus or just me? I have never had a phone with issues in transfering data. I'll give a clous service a try again. I appreciate your help

It's a known "issue" that people have really funky PC setups and have issues installing drivers. It's not inherently a technological problem with MTP or the Galaxy Nexus. As I said before, it's just a bit more finnicky than USB Mass Storage (UMS), which is used on most other phones.
I'll keep referring to the fact that on a bare Windows 7 install, with no previously installed drivers, I was able to plug in my Galaxy Nexus, auto-install drivers, and xfer files back/forth without a hiccup... that'll give you an idea for where the problem lies
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1523691 try this it has wifi sync using it all the time
ive got windows 7 ultimate, no issues, works as it should

Like martonikaj said, you should be able to transfer everything wirelessly. It's probably your fastest bet.
I either do that, or use ADB. While it's not as fast, I find it to be more stable than MTP (but that could be just me).
I assume download files as a zip and then open them on the pc? I assume all I would have to transfer would be titanium backup since it contains all app and system data. I know some of my questions might seem silly but i want to make sure i dont loose any data.
I've tried downloading the samsung drivers on 3 different pc with 3 different operating systems and cant get the drivers to properly load. I'm a little upset with Samsung at the moment. I never had a problem wit HTC or Moto phones.
you can use Alt Mounter app on mac & windows
go to goole & search it
then download AltMounter.apk & install it to your phone
then download altmounter for windows & install it to your pc
after that run altmounter in your pc & also run altmounter in your phone
after that plug the usb cable . the phone storage shows up in a window
this is verys simple & i like it
you can use it if you have problems with MTP
I'll give it a shot, thanks!

[Q] Cannot initiate USB data connection on GS3 (rooted, CM10; Win 7)

A few weeks after rooting and installing CM10 on my GS3, it stopped recognizing any form of USB data connection. It still charges from both computer and wall adapter, but I cannot initiate a data transfer or recognize my device using ADB.
I have tried:
three different OEM Samsung cables (from SG3/SG4 phones)
all the ports on two different Win 7 laptops
all the ports on an Ubuntu desktop
enabling or disabling USB debugging
with different combinations each time. No "USB connection" dialog has shown up on the phone, and no "new device" dialog has shown up on any of the computers. I know that I can get ADB working with a different Android phone (HTC Inspire 4G) so I know that my main laptop has USB ports that work and the cables I've tried work as well, so I'm left to assume that the issue is with the GS3. External visual inspection does not suggest the USB port on the phone is damaged, and the phone is only a year old, so I don't believe that is the cause.
Is there a system setting that I may have modified on the GS3 that would disable all forms of USB communication?
(The end goal is to get at least ADB working so I can try and recover some deleted files from the internal memory; I haven't found a reliable method that does not require ADB so I'm trying to get that to work. I know that transferring files on or off can be accomplished with the external SD card or over Wifi but that is not what I'm looking for)
Any suggestions from anyone?
I am not sure. Could be a software issue. I would try backing up your current cm ROM and try installing a fresh touchwiz ROM to see of that works, to rule out software issues. This could also be a android 4.3 issue. Could try stickmount or a similar otg app from the market.

I don't think any OTG app like stickmount will help; I'm not trying to connect devices to my phone. I'm trying to get my computer to recognize my phone (and vice versa) in order to get ADB working.
If I can avoid flashing a RAM I'd like to, because I'm still interested in recovering those deleted files. If that is the only thing that would help, though, then I'll do it. Any other suggestions?
Install Kies and that should get the drivers for the pc in place. Odin should recognize the device when it is in the download mode. If that works, then the pc to phone connection is OK and I'd look to software instead of hardware.
Or, if you boot into your custom recovery, either CWM or TWRP, you should be able to get ADB to recognize the device and issue commands including pulling the files on Internal storage. TWRP also has a file browser built in that might be useful.
I have tried uninstalling any Samsung drivers then using the SGS3 toolkit to install the official drivers, but that didn't change anything on the PC end.
Additionally, I tried finding my device while it was in recovery using ADB and there was no connection indication either.
I currently have CWM installed, but I didn't see a mounting option like I've seen for TWRP. Can I flash TWRP without a computer?
Or try this out: Download mode>Connect via USB>Let Windows download and update all drivers until the notification in the bottom right says it's ready to use>Unplug>Battery Pull>Boot normally>connect again. Voila! It works every time when it's being wonky and its a simple way that doesn't require a bunch of downloads!
installing insecure adb might help
Rebooting into download mode does nothing.
I believe rooting and installing CM10 means I already have insecure adb?
thanks
thanks
what next?
