Hi!
Does the facebook app deserve to be used in my android?
I am now used to access it with the browser, but the app has more funcionalities?
Does it kill my battery life?
Give me your opinions, please!
It does kill battery life. I keep the app installed but have sync (in phone settings) and notifications (in app settings) turned off and that helps.
I've hated the app for a long time...it has honestly become alot better, and the current build i believe to load faster then via browser, plus it is nice to have specific notifications if needed. As far as facebook + Jellybean, since it no longer syncs contacts...you can sign out as needed to preserve ram/minimize battery life. I use HaxSync and HaxSync JB workaround to sync FB contacts w/ statuses + pics and it was 100% worth the money.
AFAIK the only thing the app does (aside from kill your battery) that you can't do some other way is notifications.
Facebook has a personalised email address you can use to post status updates and photos. The mobile site is reasonably snappy. Haxsync allows you to sync contacts.
Last time I used the app is a while ago, but I haven't missed it.

The FB app does NOT kill your battery, it doesn't even show up on my battery stats! Given, I only use it a few times a day but it definitely doesn't contribute to battery issues
I still had that bad rep in my mind.
Anyway, i use a dedicated browser for Facebook, so it's a non issue.
And one thing is the Facebook app will keep requesting for GPS location, but that was a few months ago, i'm not sure whether the app still request for GPS or not.

Only when the app is open. It stops once closed (and killed)
The app is too bug filled to be worth using and although it doesn't kill battery anymore it definitely decreases battery life even with the app not in use especially if you opt to use notifications. Web browser works well enough for me.
better to use browser than the app... the fb app is horrible IMO

The app IS the mobile site so there is no difference other than the app is faster
App is worthwhile. You can also integrate better to upload photos and the notifications are nice.
Facebook, with 4hr sync, notifications on, messanger/location off, uses almost no battery. Try using G+ for even a day and you'll see that G+ with full sync is the massive battery killer.
So yes, absolutely use the new Facebook app if you use Facebook often.
When there's already a well laid out mobile version of a website I see no reason to install an additional app. Weather, amazon, Facebook, all these and more work perfectly well via browser, saved in favorites, no need for all the individual apps taking up space.

Why don't all app's have a exit or close? Take Facebook for instance once, you load that app it stays open no way to close it and taking up battery. Is there a app so you can have theses close.

For crying out loud, search a little. You have a rooted device running Leo Droid and yet NO IDEA how Android manages applications? There are a plethora of task killers (-> google it) around, but also everybody knows they are not needed (-> google it).
Don't get me wrong, I know that not knowing stuff is a perfectly natural thing for a human being (after all, I am a teacher). But in this day and age of information being readily available at the click of your mouse (Google et consortes, this forum's "Search" button...) you still need someone to find/type in the answer to YOUR QUESTION so that you get it on a platter... Sigh.

P.S Do NOT use any of those task killers on your 2.1 or later versions of Android phone!
Cheers!
Concerning Facebook I totally understand his complain. Even with disabled notifications and "leaving" the app via backbutton it is listed as the highest battery-consumer (under*#*#4636#*#* --> battery usage while idle).
Since I didn't find a solution for that I uninstalled Facebook. But the other guys are right, as long as an app is programmed well, it does nothing in background and sleeps. No need to close apps or free RAM. Free RAM is always a sign of bad memory management in the OS so keep it filled up as it will speed up your phone!

Thanks facebook is high battery consumer, never used a task killer and I never will.

I have installed the facebook-app and it is no battery drainer for me.
Go to chat, then menu -> go offline.
if the app is closed then it won't sync up itself will it? (or if it does it'll just restart itself again).
say you have facebook to sync each hour - I thought the hour was from open...
so open check news feed, back out of it (facebook still running), after running for an hour it will check again and notify you if you have notifications on...
The only thing that does seem to annoy me slightly is when I open improved email it seems to open a whole host of other apps at the same time, including soundhound, stocks, maps, and about 10 other things... no idea why as it doesn't need those apps opening at all
I was reading some comments over at Rootwiz and discovered an app from the Android market called HaxSync.
It sync's your facebook contacts with the Contact list on your phone. It also provides pictures next to your contacts along with status updates like what Google+ does.
Its friggin awesome I can finally sync facebook to the phone properly.
Please dont flame me if this is common knowledge, just thought I would share it with people that didnt know. And of course, some custom Roms include FB sync but this does not require root.
Yep. can only confirm that. I do not want to use a custom rom and this app syncs my facbook contacts pretty well.
I worked great for me too but the battery usage made it impossible to keep, was using 20% of my battery a day!

They fixed that problem with an update. It now only does that the first time you sync and only periodically checks for updates. Mine doesn't even register anymore.
it also uses higher quality photos. I synced it then turned auto sync off. Just manually sync it now every now and again.

Does it come with an option that allows you set how often it checks for updates?
Paid version only, boo. I pay for plenty of things, but not facebook contact sync.

I've been using SyncMyPix to sync my FB contact photos...the photos downloaded with SyncMyPix are high res.
Has anyone compared the quality of the photos from HaxSync with SyncMyPix? I would be interested to know...

I don't know about whatever rom you are on, but AOKP syncs fairly low resolution Facebook pictures. HaxSync synced nice, high-res pictures but as with another person here, the battery draw was undesirable so I just stuck with the rom's sync. I might start using it again if it has really gotten better about eating a battery up though.
1 euro well spent. Excellent. A little contact joining where the names are widely different in Facebook, Twitter and Google Contacts and all is done, now with great pictures!
Solidly recommended.

It also allows you to sync only over WIFI, if data is a problem for you.
I'm not sure how well mine is working, because some contacts are sync'd to facebook, others are sync'd to HaxSync. Some contacts have high res images, others are extremely blurry.
HaxSync is supposed to have facial recognition to center the pic around the face.....but I don't find that that works for me.
Does it for anybody else? Overall, I really like it

Its appears to be working for me. One of my contacts has a headshot as her profile pic. The Facebook thumbnail is the one she chooses, which is centered properly. The Haxsync one is centered on her eyes, which cuts off the rest of her face.
Not much I can do about that, I guess. People should have better facebook pictures.
Agree. It's awesome.
Nice. I'll check this out.
Awesome. None of the ROMs with Facebook sync would sync the photos for me. This is working flawlessly.

Haxsync is nice, I just wonder how we could backup the manual contact link when moving to a new rom though.
Since we have today our fully working ICS rom, I would like to share this app
HaxSync
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mots.haxsync
It's sync your facebook contacts (Pictures and status updates) with your phone contacts in the same way ICS sync your contacts with google plus (High res contact pictures)
The app it's only 99 cents and IMO it's totally worth it.
BTW: I hold no relationship with the developer of this app, im just a happy customer.
Try it you wont regret.

Is it a built-in feature of ICS? Because for me it only syncs Google+ contacts and completely ignores facebook contacts. Pictures don't come up or anything. Neither do their icons show in Handcent SMS

no, it's built into the official facebook app. I guess that app is included in the skyrocket port. you have to go into facebook settings and choose SYNC.
That said, it looks like my contacts (i use Go Contacts) defaults to sync with google+ before it uses facebook for photos.

Yeah man just go on to the development forums and it should be on the first page. You could also search for it. Instructions are all there. There are a couple of bugs, most notably the auto rotation doesn't work. But other than that it works perfectly for most, including me I would suggest reading the entire thread to gain a little insight into what has been going on and to be a little safer with the installation and all that.... GOOD LUCK!!
When I had my Galaxy Nexus back in December I know there was no Facebook sync available for ICS at the time, I don't know if they've updated it back then.
But you can use Friencaster to sync all your contacts and pictures.
This reminds me though, has anyone else noticed there's no People app? Is that a Nexus only app or just missing?

Did I miss a memo?
I have a question, Facebook from the sky rocket ICS port won't let me access the pull down notifications. What I mean is, I'll get a notification, open the pull down in the app, and it shows me what's new but I can't touch it to access it, it does absolutely nothing.
Anyone know of a better app for Facebook?

I got fed up waiting on the Facebook app to be good and finally bought friendcaster pro. The interface, speed, and options are leaps and bounds better. And push notifications with pop ups that actually work better than the official app IMHO. Another one to keep an eye on is fast Facebook which is still in beta but very promising.

App got quite the overhaul it seems, despite the sparse changelog.
First thing I tried though was contact sync and it still tried to sync all my contacts instead of existing ones, so I guess that's still broken.
I am so pissed that Facebook is shoving crap down my throat.
I don't want a Messenger and Camera app installed with Facebook.

It's bad enough that I have two camera apps (Fx Camera and Instagram) now you give me another one? Stop with these redundancies and make your app more cohesive and streamlined FB.
I'm still sticking with the mobile site.
Facebook is like a virus. They called their new shortcuts 'Camera' (like Google) and 'Messenger' (like Google). What's next? Calendar and People?

They can't be disabled either. Unreal.
The most confusing thing has to be the messenger. Do they want us to use the dedicated messenger app or the one in the FB app because now there is a shortcut for both in the app drawer

Yeah they want you to use the new one I'm assuming. Although it just opens the FB app and moves to that tab. If you close it then open the FB app from its main icon, you just get taken to the messenger tab. Might as well just use the app only and hit the tab manually. At least its not super slow anymore so it'll be easy.
Honestly they can instantly remedy this by giving us settings options to show/hide the Camera and Messenger app shortcuts.
Can anyone explain how I can just install a facebook apk that doesn't include the shortcut icons?
If not, im removing facebook from the phone and using the web version instead.
far out I wish facebook wasn't used by so many people because I hate it.

I deleted mine and couldn't be happier, I'm a decently social person, but I just find it a waste of time, but that is just me.
As for the a unified app, that doesn't have those shortcuts, I think I might be able to edit the apk, I'll give it a try.
Its so stupid to have two messenger icons... plus a extra camera button... is this why FB bought instagram? Just to have their own camera shortcut?

So Facebook loads up quicker now? I've noticed after using facebook for couple of days, it'll load slower. Tried it on two gnex, same result.

I just uninstalled the app, and will use the mobile site from now on.
Is facebook also having the age-old wake-lock issue? Back when I installed it (Literally 2 months ago) I always had wake-lock issues under BetterBatteryStates called something "katana" even with manual syncing. Probably the reason why I hate the app so much.
Still doesn't load my news feed. Stupid app. Back to friendcaster!

generally, "best ROM" threads are usually not allowed here. it's a subjective question, every phone reacts to rom/kernels differently, everyone runs different apps, uses their phone differently. so I would expect this to be closed, as usually it's recommended to just go read the threads.
that being said, since your question was not an outright stupid "whats the best ROM guys?" question, i'll take a stab. I am currently using LabRats, comes with the LK8 kern (which also has the exnyos exploit, oooh scary!), great batt life. also stock rooted is highly dependable, IMHO.
Cool. Thanks for the response. I would usually just figure it out myself but it's my wife's phone that she uses for work. I'll give it a try.

Any rom that lets you under-clock the CPU.
Avatar ROM is giving me great battery life with phenomenal performance. My recommendation.
Any rom.
Just disable/freeze/uninstall most of the sync/push/notification options in most apps that have them.
For instance, use facebook, twitter, etc all you want but get rid of the facebook notification service. Same for the rest.
Using a sytem app remover I completely removed all the weather and stocks services, the samsung add-on facebook account sync and notification service, flikr, twitter, "social stream" or whatever it was called, skydrive... I did leave dropbox because I might possibly ever use that but I should probably get rid of that too. Email is configured with a working non-gmail account, but settings set NOT to sync or notify. Same for gmail. Got rid of the samsung and sprint proprietary stuff and their attendant updaters too.
Whenever I install a new 3rd party app I check if it has any kind of update/notification/sync options and usually disable them unless it's a real special case. Like podcast and news reader apps like dogcatcher and pulse will sync themselves all the time by default. Turned those off!
Now it's pretty much just google play that updates itself and pretty much just phone and txt that generates any notifications.
