Hello everyone,
the moderating team assigned to your forum has decided to no longer allow any offtopic threads whether those were previously sanctioned by moderators or not.
We have come to this decision due to the fact that those threads offer absolutely nothing to the device specific forum or to development in general.
After all the name of the site is xda-developers.
If you feel the urge to engage in any offtopic discussion, the offtopic forum is always at your disposal.
As such, this thread will be closed in 24 hours from this post.
Please understand that this decision was made only to streamline the forums and to enhance the user experience.
Thanks for your understanding and cooperation,
Diamondback

There were several threads that have been effected by this. What I don't understand is why were the threads not reviewed before such a decision were made? The title "Off Topic" apparently makes you the black sheep on XDA. I've read where in some threads that the so called "Off Topic" thread actually offered support without being ridiculed or trolled. There's alot of good information and bonds that have developed in some of these threads. Instead of loading up a mods inbox with a zillion PM's, why not just put it all out there for everyone to see? Somewhere there was a notice given that this was coming, but today is the first that myself and many others have ever heard of it. Can someone explain this to me and the rest of the community as to why there were no research or discussion (in the area of the threads) put forth in making a decision such as this?
I concur. Besides being off topic most of the users there have contributed in and out of the Droid X2 Off Topic thread. If you were to look through the 7000+ posts you would see that many users in our thread are productive members of XDA. I agree many Off Topic threads are useless but we have helped many people across devices and carriers.

Well said, to both of you. I see the XperiaX10 group continued their thread in this forum, as well. I truly think the excuse of "these threads add nothing to the community" is a thinly veiled excuse for them wanting to thin out older forums. Diamondback and other mods know that many people have moved on from those phones. If they close out some threads, that's less work/moderating they have to do. Had they actually taken a moment to think, they would realize that it was those threads that kept those forums alive, producing active conversations regarding smartphone technology as a whole. Then again, perhaps that was exactly the problem - it kept those forums alive.
It's unfortunate that a website that promotes community around technology, shuts down threads that build community. Oh, XDA, you beautiful paradox.
So... who else did this happen to? Join us!

Yea man this is ridiculous. This off topic thread I'm apart of is this single best most informative thread I've ever been apart of on xda. Its what got me into the rest of xda's threads. Anything I can do to help I'm here.:thumbup::thumbup:
My local off topic thread is one that u can cine to and ask anything and not be ridiculed for your lack if knowledge. And multiple people respond to questions and help. I come from the Nexus4 off-topic group by the way.

I'm sure the reasoning behind this decision will make absolutely no sense and will just be "This is a site for developers" as an umbrella excuse for doing whatever.
My thread that got the notice isn't even an off-topic thread. It's the Nexus 4 U.S. thread...

Why don't you talk to your assigned group of mods, maybe PM there Team Leader. Communicating with them may help. Not all teams have removed OT from their forums. If you have enough peoples objecting to this, they may consider. But what is the main issue, that you no longer have a place to talk OT? What is wrong with your thread being moved to the OT forum?

As pessimistic as this sounds, I doubt anything will happen. XDA mods make decisions for the "community" without actually consulting the community. No polls. No feeler threads asking for input. There is simply a parent/child relationship. "We have the authority, so we make the rules. Don't like it? Leave."
Is it B.S.? Absolutely. Do they honestly care what you think? Unless you are a huge contributor or your username is Cyanogen, no.
I'm simply sharing what I have gathered from my time on this site. If I've offended anyone, well, I'm sorry.

If what he said were true, there would be more closings throughout the forum and not only in the 3 he mentioned. I'm still waiting for someone to speak up. Look at the threads that have been moved here. Its not the same. The one's that actually gave back to the community will soon be tarnished by their new "home."

Biggeron there is no need to be like that, I mean, he asked in the right section and it a legitimate question. I myself have wanted to start developing but I have no programming experience so I didn't even ask. In terms of the ops question, I'd either get on irc and start talking to developers, or use one of the many kitchen tools to start. Also if you don't know java or a similar programming language, I'd start there.
Here is a kitchen that you might want to use.

To be fair there is something up with this OP. He has posted in several places about updating from DK18 to EL30, then asking "what's the best EL30 ROM" You all know I love those, and all of a sudden is in the thick of CM9 running it and commneting on it....now that is some hell of a learning curve for 2 days.

Bahhhh but that sounds like work!
I think the best and most simple way for him to release the fastest, most stable, and most bestest themed ROM is to rip off MarcusantROM and then change the name. You know its true.
Im up for stealing marcusantrom, I think ill calll it irule9000rom and turn it blue.
on another note I didn't realize whats up with the op. I especially like his cm8 thread.

XDA is a great place to ask questions and you should ask as many as you like....after you have made a substantial effort to help yourself first. Forum 101 you might say and something that would have been force fed to you upon account creation here. ESL or not the message would have been undeniably clear. Dishwasher forum, Automobile forum, Mobile Phone forum, Hockey forum or Home Audio forum; you will find this norm at them all.

Why didn't you contact the devs? It's their business. If they want their stuff taken down contact them and notify them. Making another off-topic thread in Nexus General is just creating more clutter. I understand you can't translate the page, I can't even connect to the site, but next time hesitate before pressing that Post Thread button. For the sake of keeping Galaxy Nexus General on-topic.

I have edited the thread title to make it easier to understand from the forum. I have no problem with this thread as it is relative to devs in this forum.
The Galaxy Nexus ToolKit has been posted a few times on that site with no credit or links to my threads but I have my name and thread links coded into the program so it would be extremely difficult for someone to pass the ToolKit off as their own work lol.
I agree its not good forum policy to not give credit to the dev and we dont allow it on xda but I have a feeling it wont make any difference complaining on the site as it was the Founding Admin that posted my ToolKit.. I dont think he will take any action against others on the site doing the same.
Its a great shame but there are ALOT of site that pass work off as their own or dont give any credit to the person who spent ALOT of time creating it.
Mark.

It's a shame but there is little that can be done to sites outside the U.S. Homeland security as taken authority to block some sites from being rebroadcast in the U.S. but not much else can be done.
Right on, I'm pretty much over it everyone knows who the real devs are but I feel proud that someone wants to kang my **** but at the same time could of use it if credited lol weird I guess

Yes, this forum is just awesome, and my experiences with moderators is that they are really nice and cooperative. The information here is overwhelming.
I understand the "noob restructions" and that there is no better way to keep this forum clean and manageable.
Just... why do these rules have to be applied to ME? ;-)
For me, it is hard to reach the 10 postings because I am almost exclusively reading in devs forums (I am a dev but not xda). Since I am not able to post there, I have to write dev-related postings elsewhere (where the people who might be interested in the posting usually don't find it). This is not meant as a complaint. Just feedback from a noob.
Anyway, soon I will get there (this is posting number 7)...
One idea for the 10 posting rule: The number could be lower for people after some membership time, for instance, 10 postings for fresh members, 6 postings after 1 month of active membership, 3 postings after 2 months of membership. Just an idea...
A warm welcome to you!

Often the best way to find this is to search, but change the sort order to favor newer posts
Though if a device is old enough to have been around over 2 years ago, the manufacturer has probably stopped updating, meaning the method has likely remained relatively still for some time...
Not always, but often must of the big work is done in the early days
I also want to thank XDA to makes my android experience much better with the help from developers! Glad to have joined!
As a senior member here I just want to state I think it's retarded to have 2 seperate development forums for one device. I don't even know how long this forum existed here until the other day someone mentioned something was in the original dev section.
If there were a vote I would vote to just have a single common development forum.
I agree

I second your opinion; it causes confusion having 2 separate sub-forums for development on one device.
Agreed. How you can have cm10/rujelus/venum/etc roms in the other section while cm9/jb aosp and calk's roms is here in original development is beyond me.
Edit: Even the OG Epic forums have only 1 dev section. I don't see the standardization here.

Cool kid trying to get noticed by breaking the rules and posting in the wrong forum, pretty pathetic with all the big "I'm senior member" talk.
I think posting a thread about how you thing a section is pretty stupid if you ask me...
How does thread have anything to do with development?

While I would normally agree with you, I also think that this section is pointless. I could MAYBE see if they wanted to seperate kernels from the dev section so that they were easier to find MAYBE....but yeah this seems like pointless clutter.
I think AOSP roms should be in a different group from TW and themed roms. I like the idea of it but obviously this is currently sorta quirky. Just my 2 cents.

I think the point is too keep down on the useless questions and the like in a development thread, but that clearly doesn't work.
Sent from my SCH-R760 using Tapatalk 2
It's meant to keep actual development separate from kangs and the same rom 100 times with 100 themes. They didn't want to tell all the people making winzip roms they had to stop posting in development.

it just confuses me even more
it took me a week and several pages of scrolling in the xda app to have finally realized cm9 was moved over to this newly created forum, i think if this would have been here from the start then it wouldn't be so irritating but this sub forum feels like its only been here about a week or 2, and as a non-developer but xda enthusiast i just don't know how to differentiate original and android development?? should mui be in here too since its an original of its type? why isnt cm10 in here but cm9 is? i dunno, personally i liked it all under 1 subforum where F5 is my friend, i lurk the roms i like....just my opinion, mods can do whatever they like with my thread, lock it, delete it, warn me, whatever, i was just voicing my opinion in the section it was related (albeit its not a rom i developed, this is just a thread i developed lol), eitherway i'm always greatful for xda and all the talented developers here, since you stopped by my thread chris41g, i'd like to thank you as one of the top 10 devs for our device, we wouldn't be at this stage of customization for this model phone if it weren't for your help.
So you call the split stupid but you cant even find threads. Let alone use the search function.
I prefer it this way. There are too many copycat roms in the other section. This allows me to read only about original roms.

I don't really agree with it, I'm just constantly checking both. Puts more work into looking around for the "average" member.
If I had my way, there would be subforums:
1. CM+MIUI+Codename+AOKP+AOSP (The multi-device roms)
2. Roms based off stock/TW (Developed soley for the E4GT)
4. Kernels/Recovery/Modems
5. Themes/Apps/Stand-alone mods

so are ya here to put in your opinion, or just complain about posters? you have attitude problems man, dont post if al your gunna do is come at people/
anyways, i could see the point of two separate forums if it had some uniformity. doesnt make sense to put cm9 in one, and cm10 in another. just confuses people when both roms should be in original
and you can argue with allot of roms on where to put them. like aokp for example, it should go in original, but since its built from cyanogenmod you can argue that it should go in the other one.
but you can also argue that us senior member are just cranky because stuff is changing, like all senior facebook users are when facebook changes profile layout, or timeline, or whatever they call it now
im also a senior member and I think the idea was separate the tw roms/kernel from the non tw but that jelly bean rom is still there
Given my senior member status
.
If ppl use search more often you may find wat your looking for! This extra thread in a development section is stupid!

What's the difference between the two forums? (The e4gt android Dev and the e4gt original dev"
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
The difference is searching. Seeing as how this has been asked, answered and stickied quite a few times I'm not going to spoonfeed you
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
If you choose not to answer, then best not reply.
Android original is mostly original stuff (CM10, 9, AOKP), etc.. Where as Android Development is mostly Touchwiz based stuff.
yeah ok there boss lemme jump right on taking orders from you
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
Ok guys. Lets not get out of line here. The answer posted is good enough. We are here to help when help is needed, but we will not spoonfeed people. One of the rules of XDA is to read. I have seen too many people brick their device because they didn't read for themselves and took the advice of someone that didn't know exactly what they were talking about. If a person can't take the time to at least try to find the information for themselves, we will not take the time to give it to them.
Thanks to those who actually answered my question. It took longer to grief me than to answer the question lol.
Btw search isn't the holy graal of xda. 9/10 I get tons of irrelevant crap. So lighten up buddy.

I for one am still not totally clear on it - as Calkulins ROMs are in the "original" section when they are TouchWiz cooked ROMs...
I'm all for griefing and putting the lazy, the fools and the idiots in place, bring on the hammer.
I'm all for helping people no matter what their knowledge base is as long as it doesnt take more more than a few moments. As for the lmgtfy guy... I'm trying about the xda search function.

First search result on xda search too.
Some of you people really need a life. Seems like 90% of people who get on here just log on to prove how much more than they know than other. God forbid they help someone learn because then they wouldn't be the self important lords of cell phone customization they purport themselves to be.
To all the helpful, humble people I've dealt with on xda, thank you for having even a base amount of social skills! (Obviously the main shortcoming of a majority here)
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
No man. We will help. There are rules for a reason. Search being one of them. If you can't google then expect a brick. If you want to blame the people here for not spoonfeeding you then be my guest. Try looking at other sections here . In my experience this is the nicest group of people in one subforum. They have even googled the answer for you... this is not a site to come pimp your phone. This is a site where developers come to share ideas and help eachother. This is also a site where they will teach you so you can develop your own stuff. They do not get paid for what they do. They are here on their free time. So why would they want to hold your hand in a situation where the answer is easily found on your own? This thread needs to be locked... anyone else hear a knock on the glass? Kenny? Lol

What's the difference between the Sprint GS2 and the International one? I forgot how the search button works, I'm too lazy, plus why bother when I can just ask you guys to spoonfeed me. I'm ready to flash an international rom on my Sprint GS2.

It was a simple question that required an even simple answer. You guys are going above and beyond. Arrogance is about unattractive quality, and I'm sure you self important confidence translates well into the real world.
You guys over forget forums are about communication as well, but some of you are so amped for a chance to zing a noob. Someone should spoonfeed you guys some people skills.

You are still forgetting that we have rules here. We are more than happy to help, but not when willful ignorance is involved. It was already proven by multiple people that this question is answered in the first post of a Google and XDA search. Why waste your time and our time asking a question that is easily answered with a search?
O the irony of some of the replies in this thread. Waste time? You are wasting time arguing if it's logical to help someone or smite them... If the answer was smite, don't bother replying. He came looking for help, not someone who cling's to the "rules" in order to justify not giving the help the OP was looking for. BTW, 90% of the question's asked here, have been answered a 100 times or more. If you can't be bothered to answer it 101 times, then don't bother clicking the thread title. I could see what this thread was about before I clicked to enter it, and so should you. So if you came here to b****, then shame on you.
I didn't come here to *****. Also I help out whenever I can. The answer has already been answered. There were a lot of threads on it. For new people coming here it may not seem like that big of a deal. I have been here since this phone was out. I am not saying I know everything because I dont. There have been so many repeat questions its ridiculous. It takes two minutes to search. If I dont understand something I will google the hell out of it. Remember to use key words in the search like xda epic touch 4g or et4g. And if I still cannot find the info I finally ask a question. I get it. Some people dont like to do anything themselves. They dont appreciate that ahaaa! Moment. Well it will most likely end up the same direction as this thread.
