Flashing CM10 S-ON Amon-ra recovery v2.3 - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i got the links from this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2078193&page=1 for CM10 and GAPPs. it says something about A2SD but i'm not really sure what that does. Do I need it, as in the instructions it just says to get both CM10 and the gapps. Also, I already tried installing the programs and then rebooting into the bootloader screen and then recovery. When I wipe data/factory reset and then try to flash the cm10 from the sd card it aborts halfway through. What am I doing wrong?
edit : i have s-on and hboot 2.18.0001

You need to wipe everything, not just data. As in data, cache, and dalvik cache. Then try flashing your rom again
Also, A2SD stands for "Apps2SD(card)". If the rom has it enabled, then you wont be able to use it properly without having a partitioned sdcard (that means without having setup your sd with a portion of it for apps)
But you can flash any rom with *-on, the only thing that you cant do (this part is specific to the supersonic evo, its different for other htc phones) is flash radios

If your using amon ra 2.3, then you should wipe everything EXCEPT SDCARD before flashing the rom of your choice, not just factory reset. Some ppl go as far as to wipe everything three times. If that doesn't work you should try to download again to make sure you don't have a bad download.

i just pressed "Wipe ALL userdata/factory reset" "Wipe CACHE:" "wipe Dalvik-cache:" and wipe "DATA:" but theres still stuff like "BOOT" "SYSTEM" "SDEXT" and "DATA:Battery settings" and Data:rotate settings (the last two i'm going to assume aren't important). But it still aborted the installation... Maybe it might be a corrupt file? Because I didn't actually try the files from the other thread yet, but from another video which was for the LTE...

If you downloaded the files from the lte thread then that's your problem. Although cm10 is cm10 on any phone, the links are device specific. Download from the evo 4g thread and try again

ok thanks bro i already downloaded stuff from the evo thread so ill just send it to my phone and then try again

Yeah thats the next thing I was gonna suggest....most ROMs do device checking, but it can get dangerous if you flash a rom thats not for your phone, even if its similar.
For example, over at the Sprint Samsung S3 forums, I've seen some people end up with bricked phones when they accidentally flash roms made for the international S3, just because the misc partition on the international version just happens to be in the same place as the boot partition on the Sprint version. Very dangerous sometimes so be careful what you flash, this goes for ANY flashable zip, whether it be a mod, theme, app, rom, etc. Just my 2 cents

everything went great, thank you Cnexus and crime inc.
another question though, in the app store it says that my evo still isn't compatible with games like modern combat 4. anyway around that?

As far as I'm aware, it does all the Data/Cache/Dalvik wiping necessary to start off brand new. SD Card isn't touched.

Correct. It just clears all the data/dalvik/cache. Just like if you were to do a factory reset. Instead of choosing each one separately, (date full factory reset, cache, data, dalvik/cache it will do it all for you. Won't hurt to run that and still do wipe everything separately still just to be double sure Will not touch the SD card at all.

Its the exact same as calkulin's format all, except his is edify compatible.
Cool, thanks! I failed at the set up and going back to other ROM. Cant get emails to set up cause I must be missing something, but it's late. Will try again tomorrow.
I tried using it with the NEW GB R2 ROM and i get installation aborted. anyone else have this issue

Hiya all,
Wanted to load up kings now that I have a unlocked Gingerbread 4G (Thank you Revolutionary!)
Tried to load this using the recovery that Revolutionary installs, but it fails every time - telling me that there is a compatibility issue. Anyone having the same problem?

I don't use the new recovery and still use amonra, but you can send a pm to EvolvedAndroid. He unrooted his phone in hopes of getting a 3d and couldn't. So he wasn't working on roms until the Revolutionary root. He may be able to help you.

The scripts are an easy way to wipe. I wipe everything with one, then go straight to flashing whatever ROM I was going to flash without having to navigate the menus. BTW, I use Calkulin's zip with AmonRa
Run VR Superwipe once and then wipe everything (except for SD card) twice by hand in Amon Ra. I have yet to have a failed install or issues
Well, I ran Calk's twice and both times I had to reflash Recovery afterwards....
Someone please link me to gruesomwolf's wipe. I can not find it. All I keep getting is this thread in the results..never even heard of it until this thread.
Edit: Disregard, I finally found it.
where? can someone post the link? I googled "gruesome wolf wipe script" and am unable to find it.
Here ya go!
Thank you.
Check out the format all. It wipes everything but things on SD card. so it literally erases the whole rom. If you run this, you wont be booting until you flash something. This is like a total wipe

I had been content with my setup, but I finally got a chance to check out the Format All. It does what it's supposed to do, but if you think it's good, then you should try VR Superwipe. It's wipes everything 3 times! I like to manually wipe everything with Ra Amon, flash VR Superwipe and then Gruesomes Wipe All just because it reboots back into recovery. A bit overkill, but I'm always sure everything is squeaky clean.

[Q] Nooby Questions about Flashing/Rooting/ROMs.

So, I guess I'll begin by saying I'm new to Android. I feel so dumb saying that, but that should clear thing up a bit, as I have no clue about what "flashing" is, or "modems," and Lord help me, because "Odin" sounds like a really funny name.
So, I do have some precedents with iOS, and I know how to work with that, but I am a total noob with Android.
So now on to the Questions, there will be a few.
1) How to Root Epic 4G Touch- How safe is it? I do know I get things like Clockwork Mod, which I believe is for loading things.
2) Installing Custom ROMs- How do I "flash" these ROMs, and what exactly is flashing? I have been looking at certain ROMs, and I guess it is down to Starburst and Caulkin's.
3) Does Rooting/Installing erase the things on my phone?- I currently have my phone loaded with things, will rooting/installing ROMs delete this? How can I create backups?
4)LoS- I heard LoS happens more often on rooted phones. Is this true?
5) Kernels- What in the same hell is this?- Any best one of these out there? What do they do?
6) Tutorials for any of these?
Oh, and I'd like to say that I'm stock, running modem( can someone tell me what this is again?) EG30. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys. I'll update the thread if I have any new questions. xD
1) watch and follow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kExN-Y2pfxA
so far its kinds controversial wether its safe or not but i think it is
2)first turn off your phone second hold power and vol up and it will turn on into clockwork mode then wipe data/factory reset from menu then wipe cache from menu. choose install zip from menu then click choose from sd. then find it and click and install.
3) rooting and unrooting won't wipe data but installing roms will
4) its been shown on both rooted and unrooted phones so we really don't know.
5)DONT PLAY WITH THESE unless you know what your doing
i think they are the #1 reasons for soft bricking phones.
i don't exactly know how to explain it but they affect how your phone does what it does
whether it over clocking of voodoo color

Thanks man, just one more question, have you rooted? I want to know from people whose phones are successfully rooted, as I don't know much about Android, and I would probably kill myself if I ****ed up such a beautiful piece of machinery.
yup im rooted and i got to say i like my phone being rooted
there are less restrictions placed and since i have had android for while now and my last phone was rooted i coulnt stand being not rooted
also i used to have los daily once or twice but it was drastically reduced after doing this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VDxEnO1tow for me

Yes it will let you install any rom that you want as long as you also insstall clockwork mod (CWM5) it also in the instructions on how to root.
No this will not mess up your activation just start flashing roms till you find one you like. please just remember to do a backup inside cwm once you are rooted you will see an option there for it. This will let you go right back to how your phones is right now.
Thank you so much! Also, last nooby question, I promise, I heard something about a Binary counter with Odin, will flashing roms/rooting with that one click root increase it? Also, what happens when it does increase?
Thanks.

Assuming you are using ClockWorkMod, wiping data and cache will not affect the information on your external SD card. If you select "advanced" from the CWM main menu, it will provide an option for partitioning the SD card. I haven't messed with that item, but I'm guessing it could wipe data from the external SD card.
I use the ClockWorkMod backup/recovery and it works great. I also use Titanium Backup. It will allow you to backup all of your applications and files and then restore after you've wiped everything and installed a new ROM. Titanium also requires rooting.
I started out using the Odin ROM and has some issues, so I reloaded the stock ROM and then flashed the Starburst ROM with LoST kernal. I'm having great success...great battery life and all is well.
No when you wipe data its on the phone but not pictures on the SD card. Its easy once you get going.
Email me if needed I can walk u thru.

issues installing JB, help...

Hi there everyone
have a weird issue... tried searching and nothing
ok, so i installed the first ROM of bigxie . everything went fine and nothing went wrong in any ways...
i then tried to install v2 of the ROM that came out a couple days later... and it wouldnt boot past the google writing screen... no matter what i do it wont boot into android... i have dont the wipe data, cache, dalvik etc... this isnt my first rodeo lol
i have tried flashing other jelly bean ROMs an nothing... i can restore to my previous ICS perfectly fine but nothing will load JB...
i have tried to restore with Odin but now in bootloader windows wont detect the phone at all... i have kies installed and have separately installed the drivers, nothing is making Odin see the devices, so i cant even use odin to restore to a factory image...
i have the latest bootloader installed and have the latest touch CWM installed as well... currently running the latest kernel from franco and using aokp 40
this is not making any sense to me and i need help to get my device back to JB, as ICS i cant stand anymore LOL
thanks for you help in advance!

thank you for the link that helped me get the drivers working properly again.
my issue is i cannot load any JB roms at all, via CWM or otherwise... however i can still load ICS roms without issues...
and i still cant get odin to see my device at all, yet galaxy nexus toolkit works fine! ugh... lol i cannot load any OEM images at all... even the nexus toolkit doesnt want to load a OEM image to the device....

[HOW-TO] Proper method to flash a ROM

First off if you're on ANY recovery that isn't CWM 5.0.2.7 you DO NOT NEED TDJS SUPER WIPE OR CACHE WIPE SCRIPTS!!!! Seriously stop flashing these people you're filling up threads with problems caused by both of these scripts and bad flashing methods. Here's how to PROPERLY flash a ROM..
If on CWM 6.0.x.x
1. Wipe factory data/reset
2. Wipe cache
3. Go into mounts and storage
4. Format /system
5. Format /data
6. Format /cache
7. Enter advanced
8. Wipe dalvik
9. Flash ROM then gapps
10. Reboot and let the ROM settle for 5-10 minutes if flashing TW ROMs, this step is unnecessary for AOSP based ROMs.
11. (Optional) if flashing a new radio flash AFTER the ROM has been initially booted for the first time. No wipes are necessary when flashing a new radio but it HAS to be flashed after the ROM is loaded and settled in. Flashing a radio first and then a ROM has caused issues like the phone not even recognizing there is a network for it. ( phone remains in emergency mode )
If you're on a Cyanogenmod nightly a full wipe IS NOT REQUIRED. The proper method of dirty flashing is just wiping cache, ( NOT FORMAT CACHE IN MOUNTS & STORAGE )
wiping dalvik and flashing your ROM. Simple as that.
If using TWRP 2.2+ the steps are essentially the same or use TDJs wipe scripts. They work perfectly fine with TWRP. Feel free to wipe 2x or even 3x if it makes you feel safer about your installation.
And THAT'S IT. People are cluttering up threads with issues than can totally be avoided by flashing the right way. I hope this helps some of you iron out these insane tiny quirks I keep reading about.
Happy flashing folks.
EDIT:
I forgot to note.. if you're still using one of TDJs roms or any other rom that automatically wipes with TDJs SUPER CACHE WIPE, do NOT use any other recoveries other than CWM 5.0.2.7 or TWRP 2.2+. With any other recovery such as CWM 6.0.x.x+, the wipe script breaks the roms ability to reboot properly and the only way to solve this is to use TDJs CACHE WIPE which in turn breaks your recoveries ability to work properly.

Thanks man this was needed. Yes threads get filled with this so often. I dirty flash like you mentioned accept I format system first. I also clean flash like you mentioned but never formatted cache and dalvik just system. That's good to know. Thanks
But I will add those new steps. I format system when dirty flashing because on the cm10 Site they mentioned that.
Again thanks

Sad we need to keep telling people how to flash. If you are not sure what you are doing I think you should be very careful before you destroy your expensive toy. Everyone should have an idea on how to flash and restore from a bad flash before they even root. Also as my sig says let Google be your friend people if you run into issues instead of running to a thread and clogging it up...
Thanks for post and this is a bump to keep it on page 1 and hopefully more people will notice it.
So I messed up and used the darkside scripts with 6.0.1.4 and I can't get my phone to boot, like you mentioned. It also destroyed the recovery, does nothing at all. What can I do, if anything, to fix?

Can you boot into recovery at all? If you can.. download the TWRP 2.2.2.0 zip in its thread and flash it. Its going to hang in the install process but should say twrp has been installed. At that point reset your phone by holding the power button. As soon as you feel the phone vibrate hold down both volume buttons and you should boot into TWRP recovery.

I have been using the darkside wipe! It has been working great. I don't think that it will brick my phone or anything.....

Darkside superwipe will only mess your ROMs ability to reboot on touchwiz ROMs. The only way to fix this is flashing the darkside cache wipe which WILL break clockwork mod 6.0.1.4 like the user above. Point is.. don't use either scripts at all on CWM. Wipe the old fashioned way.

I agree. even after switching to twrp I still find the script useful. But op warning about using script with cwm version 6xxx might be true. I have issue with boot when i was on cwm 6 and i had to Odin cwm 5.0.2.7 again to get into recovery menu.

Never forget those! Those completely format your partitions.. like formatting a hard drive before you install Windows.

Thanks for the guide. One question, how do you format partitions on TWRP? Do you need to?

Luckily enough, TWRP does this in the wipe section already when you hit system, cache and dalvik. Its an awesome and well thought out recovery!

Oh cool, I was already really liking TWRP and this makes it even better.
This thread should be a sticky.

Agree.
Sub'n.
I just followed this and it answers many questions. I have great luck with CWR 5.0.2.7 and the darkside scripts. Everytime I had an issue, I would run the darkside cache script and all was fixed.
Now, since I upgraded CWR, I have had issues installing ROMS, bad recovery installs, etc. Just as you mentioned.
Got a new phone today. Flashed an odin CWR (didn't know the version). It turned out to be an older touch version. I CWR flashed the latest Sk8's recovery. I then followed your instructions. Installed JB ROM and Gapps and it was a success. Not boot loop.
Questions: What do I do if I want to wipe cache and dalvik or fix permissions in the future? What radio is recommended with the latest JB nightly?

Just go into CWM and wipe cache in the main menu and dalvik in the advanced menu. To be honest though you don't need to do this whatsoever. Only when dirty flashing a new nightly. In my experience atleast lol as far as gapps go..

These should work just fine
