[Q] Will the SGH-T989 work on AT&T? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hi, I'm not sure where to post this....I am currently a T-Mobile customer. We are thinking of going over to AT&T and I was wondering if My phone will work with their service? I think I might have to get it unlocked form TM..but wasn't sure...or could I Root my phone and then it will be usable?
I think the networks are similar, but are the sim cards the same in size?
Does AT&T have the WiFi calling feature? I thought that was strictly a TM thing...
If a moderator feels this should be posted in the AT&T section, feel free to move it there as I don't know where it should have been posted to begin with....
Thanks ahead of time!

It supports hspa 1900 on AT&T but you will lose WIFI calling as they do not have it.

[solved.. won't work] T-Mobile 3G/4G on AT&T SGH-I747

I've got an unlocked AT&T Galaxy SIII, and I only get Edge for my data connection. Do I need to flash a T-Mobile radio? APN settings look okay, as far as I can see.
Also, can I flash a T-Mobile ROM and use Wifi calling, or is that asking too much?
I searched and couldn't find anyone asking these questions in the Q&A forum....
there are already like 3 threads below this one concerning the 3g/4g topic on a att sg3 working on tmobile. No it will not work because att sg3 does not support the aws tmobile frequencies. you will only be able to get edge. NOW if it were a tmobile sg3 on att then it would work.
All the threads I could find in this form on my search went the other way: T-Mo phone on AT&T.
Does anyone actually know whether a T-Mobile modem on an AT&T phone would work or not? I looked at the main board in my phone, and it's labelled with both SGH-I747 and SGH-T999, which makes me think the internals are fully identical.
I'd like to know this too! I also have an AT&T Galaxy SIII and was seriously considering moving to T-Mobile because of the new unlimited data plan they were going to start offering on 9/5. I had also looked through this forum, and could only find questions of the situation the other way around, T-Mob GSIII phone on AT&T network.
Basically, was wondering:
- is there a hardware limitation that APN settings and/or installing a new modem will not get me good data speeds?
- would I need to burn a new modem?
- I'm assuming at minimum I'd need new APN settings, and am assuming T-Mobile would be able to help with that. Right?
Thanks, really interested in being able to do this!

Hey oblib - looks like there's an unfortunate hardware limitation we won't be able to get around: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771021

Where did you see that the boards were labelled the same?
AFAIK, the radio's are different and flashing a T-mobile modem could possibly brick your device. It would be much easier to buy a T999 and use it on T-Mobile (it'll even work on AT&T 3G if you want to switch back, no LTE though).
The SoCs are different. Flashing a T-Mobile modem will not give you T-Mobile HSPA.
Looks like I didn't take any pictures of that side of the phone while I had it open, and I'm not eager to pop it open again. It definitely listed both models on the PCB. If I'm remembering correctly, it's on the same side as the SIM and SD card slots, so it's just matter of removing the back plate to see it, no more disassembly than that.

Do you have part numbers for the two? According to wikipedia, they are the same Snapdragon S4 MSM8960. I just find it hard to believe that they would be different, though if they have the same pinout, that would explain the markings on my PCB.
This has been rehashed countless times. They are not the same phone. If the phones were the same, people would not be in here asking if they were the same. The MSM8960 comes in more than one flavor, with different modem parts. Yes, the CPU's are the same, but the MODEMS ARE DIFFERENT. It is an S4 Qualcomm part that comes in many different configurations. Instead of just reading until you get to some information that reinforces your preconceived notion, try reading a little further into the links at the bottom of the page and elsewhere. Seriously, if you really really don't think that Qualcomm would make different versions of the same chip, or configure them differently for the hundreds of different customer requirements, then fine, don't believe me, but it defies logic. Sorry about being an ass.

The T-Mobile version uses an MSM8260a. This SoC is the Krait with an adreno 225 GPU and no LTE. The MSM8960 has all three.

Thanks for the useful response. For those looking for even more detail, here's a link: http://www.qualcomm.com/sites/default/files/common/snapdragon-specs-06.07.12.pdf
According to that the MSM8960 (chip in I747?) has a "World Mode" modem, while the MSM8260a has a UMTS modem.
Edit: Ah, and I see both of you have answered this question before, which I would have found if I searched on MSM8260a. The threads have been dead for over a week, so I'm not surprised I missed them, but thanks for answering the same questions again.
T-Mobile HSPA not support i747 right now.

T-Mobile uses a frequency for their 3g and 4g network that only T-Mobile branded phones have. Any other GSM phone will never get 3g or 4g on T-Mobile network unless it supports the T-Mobile band, which I believe is 1700MHz. It's limited by hardware. Nothing you can do to the phone will give you the 3g/4g you have to have a T-Mobile branded device.

Not completely true. Since The Galaxy SII and the Galaxy Note (AT&T) have software radios, you can flash a radio from the TMO GSII and get 4G on TMO. I was running mine and many customers of mine like that for months until i switched phones.

It works fine for me, the area i'm in does not support 4G on the 1900MHz frequency so I can definitely confirm my stock non-rooted AT&T i747 galaxy SIII is working on T-Mobile USA's 4G data network. I've uploaded a video to youtube of how to get this to work, should also work for the AT&T i317 note II as well. I can't post links on here I guess so just type my youtube username and search my videos.

I think you just got it to work because T-Mobile launched 1900Mhz 4G starting 2013?

This is NOT TRUE, please be careful when making such "absolute" statements -- I just got a ATT i747 from craigslist, and it DOES work with the $30 Walmart plan - on 4G and LTE (depending on location).
The TRUE ANSWER IS -- IT DEPENDS -- if you live in an area that was recently upgraded to LTE (in my area was 02/13), you can get LTE/4G since t-mobile added support for it on 700 MHz (band 4) AWS (unverified - source: youtube video named "Tmobile 4G on att i747 gs3 data fix". Sorry I am not allowed to post web-links yet).
Anyway, I DO get 4G/LTE, I guess I was lucky

You do realize you resurrected an old thread, and responded to a post that was made a year ago??? Long before LTE rolled out. At the time of his post, he was 100% correct.
I dont think this is the intended way to get your 10 posts btw. There are plenty of recent issues to respond to. Thx.

[Q] AT&T Note 2 on T-Mobile?

So based on the Wireless Charging issues in the T889, I've just bought an AT&T note 2 on ebay to use on T-Mobile. I plan to unlock it and enable AWS through the hack in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2068041
My question is, once I've done this should everything work just as well as a T-Mobile Note 2? Is there anything else I need to worry about like an APN? Will all HSPA+ and LTE frequencies then work for both carriers?

Since they are so big on the Bring your own device right now I would think that would just be handled in the background.
I've got a galaxy nexus right now and I get pretty decent speeds. I never did anything besides popping in the t-Mobile sim.
I was worried about a PRL, but it looks like that is a CDMA thing only. Also, I'm curious if I can get HD Voice working.

I did exactly what you plan to do. My AT&T Note 2 works perfectly on T-Mobile. The APN is set automatically as soon as you slip in a T-Mobile simm card. I get speeds around 12 to 16 MB per second which seems to be about typicla for T-Mobile. LTE hasn't been rolled out yet so I don't know if I'll get that but I believe I will based on what I've heard.
What's this about wireless charging though? I thought only the international version could do that.

from what I've read, it's confirmed working on AT&T and Sprint Note 2s as well. T-Mobile works with a hardware hack that isn't desirable. Don't know about Verizon.

Sim Unlocked TMO S4 - Frequencies Question

I have a T-Mo Galaxy S4 that was SIM unlocked through unlockerDotnet.
I've heard that the T-Mo S4 is better than AT&T for a variety of reasons, but more importantly that it picks up all of T-Mobiles HSPA+ along with AT&T's network. So in theory, having it sim unlocked, I could fully utilize t-mobile's service and at&t's service to their full potential. Can anyone confirm this?
Reason I ask was I was speaking with a TMO rep once and he said the international unlocked version wouldn't pick up on the full spectrum of TMO frequencies, but it should be fine with AT&T. Ideally I want to get into a situation where I have the option to jump between the two through their full spectrum, or any mvno's that use their towers as well.
Thanks for the clarification!
Details and specifics appreciated!
You can enable tmo AWS bands on AT&T S4. 2 phones are the same, basically the tmo version has the extra bands enable out of the box.

Thanks for the heads up :good:
So there wouldn't be any disadvantage to running the sim unlocked TMO S4 on ATT? I'd still pick up on all their 3g/4g/lte frequencies?
Much appreciated my friend
It will work its full potential on AT&T network if that what you want it to do.

I got another reply on a different forum that said
"T-Mobile's phone will work on both AT&T and T-Mobile however im not sure if the 4g LTE will work on AT&T's Network but either way you will only be able to use one or the other at any one time."
So, just to clarify, or rephrase rather, will 4G LTE work on ATT's network with the sim-unlocked TMO S4, or would it be beneficial to go with the ATT S4 and open up the TMO bands?
Sorry to beat the dead horse, just want to try and verify HSPA+ and both Tmo LTE and Att LTE will work with my setup, or if I should switch to ATT or International Unlocked version.
Again, many thanks for clearing this up!

K. Can anyone help me out with that last question that knows LTE tech fairly well? I read a bit about frequencies here and from what I can tell it seems like the LTE frequencies are 1.4MHz, 3MHz, 5MHz, 10MHz, 15MHz, and 20MHz pending which geographic market you are in, but I'm not sure if there's anything else hidden in regards to carriers have specific LTE frequencies, and if so if any that a TMO sim unlocked S4 doesn't have.
In the end, i'm 90% going to be on TMO or a MVNO, but on the slight chance (or if i'm working around the country in a very rural area) I may want to switch to ATT and possibly their new prepaid service they're going to announce. Anyways, thanks again
My unlocked TMO S4 works perfectly on ATT LTE, doing it right now and have been for the last few weeks. That's why I bought it also was to hop between carriers.
While you can get the ATT S4 to work with TMO it's more difficult and not ready to go out of the box. I tried that and ended up just returning the ATT one.

T-mobile just dropped the price of their S4. There's no reason to get the ATT one but in case you get one and want an easy way to unlock the extra bands, follow this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2324667

Using AT&T phone on T-Mobile?

Okay, I have a general question, can someone please help?
You can use your existing phone on T-Mobile network provided it is a GSM phone and unlocked.
I called T-Mobile and she said you can use AT&T phone on T-Mobile WITHOUT unlocking it because AT&T and T-Mobile have an existing service agreement. Yet, when I call my local store, they said it has to be unlocked regardless.
So which is true? Can I use at&t phone on t-mobile network just like that? Or it has to be unlocked no matter what.
Thanks.
You should just wait till tomorrow and buy the tmobile version. Atleast you know the bootloader will not be locked.

Need's to be unlocked. Maybe they were confused with roaming agreements. Tmobile has a roaming agreement with ATT to use some of their towers.
Make sure the phone supports freq bands for Tmo. I believe you need 1700/2100 for the regular network and 1900 for their refarmed LTE.

IIRC, and I'm only answering because I haven't seen anyone else pitch in yet, only the T-Mobile variant works completely with T-Mobile (obviously).
The next closest one is the AT&T variant, but I think I remember reading that you might not get full LTE support (dual band use) on it.
For the most part, all of the GSM variants will work on T-Mobile, but you will not get LTE connections, at the most, just 3G.
When I was searching for the G3, I remember bumping into that problem of no Tmo LTE bands on the unlocked variants.
So, I just went with the Tmo branded 851 and flushed the receipt down the toilet (after making a copy, of course )
