My battery is draining like CRAZY and i cant seem to find out what the issue is. Ive tried calibration several times and using a task manager that turns off running apps every few seconds(which seemed to make it worse) and that didn't help. Auto updates are turned off and fbook is only set to update every hour and brightness is set to minimum yet my battery only seem to last 8hrs. please help. i would really like to pinpoint what the issue is.
Oh...im running ERA Legendary 2.1, CPU speed and voltages are stock
That screenshot is worthless. It doesn't show anything useful. Percentages are meaningless. Get Betterbatterystats to see what is running as far as processes and partial wakes. Get CPUspy. To make sure your phone is going into deep sleep. Get Memory Booster Lite to see what is using your battery and get rid of the auto task killer. That will kill your battery fast.

i only posted the screen shot to show the time vs percentage. i already got rid of the task killer and here is a screenshot from better battery stats. idk how to stop the processes though...
Again the percentages mean nothing. In Gingerbread everything goes through Android system so it will always be highest. If you use your phone only an hour or two a day then it will drop to around 60% with cell standby getting higher. They will always add up to 100% whether on a minute or 10 hours.
You didn't post the partial wake locks screen. Also did you check CPUspy for deep sleep? Did you uninstall the autokiller? You can go into settings>applications>running services and stop applications that shouldn't be running like Facebook or music and video players, etc. Sometimes it's best to get an app like Bloat freezer and freeze apps that keep reloading if you don't use them often.

Another question and maybe the most important...what is your screen on time? I didn't see it in the screen shots. I think Max screen on Time I have gotten is right around 4hours. All the battery tweaks in the world wont help, if your screen is on a lot. Also...make sure to freeze drm, sns and system updates. Use randomlking's zip file.
If none of that works...wash, rinse, repeat. Wipe clean and reflash, rom and kernel.

As I'm sure you know, everyone's battery drainage is widely independent. However; I'm on "stock" Legendary 2.1 and recently with the updated Samurai kernel as well and run Juice Defender Ultimate. I've got some advance settings set but over the past 3-4 days, I average about 20 to 22 hours on a single charge.
My usage in an average day is: about 20-30 texts, about 10 minutes of phone calls, 10-12 emails in and out, 10 minutes of web, whatever app updates there may be and maybe about 15-30 minutes of light to medium use games.
If JDU is something you might want to look into, I would be more than willing to post my setup to get you started. <--For some reason, people are real stingy with their JDU settings.
This kinda thing just happens sometimes, and usually clears up on it's own. Especially common after flashing new software.

Hello all,
I first posted this in Q&A on the home forum. There doesn't seem to be any interest so I thought I'd post it here again. Below is what I wrote on the original post.
"If you’ve been supremely annoyed with the AOS bug like I have , here’s some interesting information I’ve found (Did a search and it appears no one else has found this yet). It’s a paper written (in 2010)by Rafael J. Wysocki which touches deep into the subject. What I hope is that it will help some developers understand this bug and ultimately integrate a work around / fix as soon as possible. Hopefully this will help some users understand what is going on with their phones as well.
I have and Epic 4g Touch and all the ROMS I’ve tried have this bug but according to the article, looks like a kernel problem. My suspend / events/0 processes runs for a long time, eating up cpu and I don’t have it as bad as some people but thought it's worth mentioning.
Basically what I get from the paper is that…
1. The suspend (and by association the events/0 process) process is Google’s implementation of a power management system, an add on to the Linux Kernel
2. That the wakelock / suspend feature is , to make a long story short , not working the way it’s supposed to.
3. “Poorly” written apps, or apps that are written without the inner workings of how suspend /wakelocks work, will trigger this bug. This can be ANYTHING.
4. Supposedly, kernel version 2.6.37 will fix this. The Epic 4g Touch kernels are all .35 as far as I know which explains the fact that so many Epic 4g Touch owners complain about this.
Would love for the smarter than me people to give their take on this?
Since this is my first post, it won't let me post a link. Do a google search for Rafael Wysocki suspend_blockers.pdf and it should be the first link that shows up."
Hopefully there's more interest here!

Danial, thanks for the reply. Not sure if it was intentional but that's not the document I was referring to. However it looks like useful info and simplifies some of the explanations and even uses the the document written by Wysocki as a reference so thanks for that.

If you go to Settings, About Phone, Battery usage, you'll see "Android OS" take an unusal amount of battery time. Mine varies from 25-80%, some others I've read, consistently get 80%. You should be running on battery for a while before you check this since if you've only been on battery for a few hours, that stats may be misleading.
A more precise way is also to download the free Battery monitor Widget, and in the statistics section, you'll see the processes "suspend" and "events/0" take hours of usage when it shouldn't. You also may see *wakelock* take up hours of time.
Some dwho have it bad, download watchdog, and monitor on the fly, which processes go over a certain amount of % usage. If your batter drains quickly, suggest this route to confirm its suspend and events/0.
thanks for all those great infos. my android os is usually under 10 percent after several hours of use so I don't think that is buggin me. Could you explain exactly what a wakelock is? I know I could use the search button but the info you provide here in this thread might help a lot of other people trying to resolve battery drainage issues. Thanks!

A wakelock is, as I understand it, a process in the Android kernel that temporarily tells the Android device to hold off sleeping (stop the suspend process).
This allows for a process , application or device (such as your wi fi antenna) to turn back on and do what it needs to do. The suspend process is suppose to tell the phone to go back to sleep but with this bug, either or can get stuck and therefore use up more cpu that it's supposed to.

Interesting, I'm on EL29, have used Strong Steve's ROM but it still persists for me. Next thing I will try is to install Steve's ROM only, no additional apps.
I've gotten 2 days , 9 hours battery life (on light use, about 3 hours screen time, lowest setting) my last round but I've Juice Defender configured it to heck and undervolted as well. I think if I figure out what app may be contributing to this I just may get 3 days, may be 4 days battery life.
thanks for the info!

Not a great day for battery stats but i did change my modem from ek02 to el29 last night trying to solve a gmail keeps sending issue i am having. Last time i was on el29 it seemed to consume more juice so i switched back to eko2.
So i have system updates always running. When I go to try and update PRL and firmware etc, it gives me an error. I assume I need to re-flash a stock ROM, then update? I wonder if my problem is this: My used my phone for a few weeks, then ported over a new number. Under phone info, it still shows the original number. It uses the original number for a hotspot confirmation. But my phone clearly has a new number. Is this need for the phone to update causing the battery drain?

PRL's (and profiles) should update despite having a custom ROM. Firmware won't however.
I think it's unlikely that the fact you can't update is causing a battery drain. To be sure, you need to find out which process the phone uses to do updates and see if they are taking up alot of CPU (OS monitor or battery monitor widget will help you with CPU usage.)
I think you simply have the OS bug like the rest of us.

Yeah your battery life is dismal but the Android OS percentage is not nearly what I would expect it to be if the bug was causing this.
I would at least try a free battery saving app if you haven't already. You could probably get a few extra hours out of it.
Might want to turn 4g off also and see how much more mattery life you get.
Hey everybody,
Just made the jump from the iPhone 4S and have done the custom ROM/kernel thing the past week. Things were good at the start but I feel them slowly deteriorating.
I find my battery life during sleep has become much worse than before. I mean, it still kills the 4S which would see ~25% overnight. But I'm seeing 10% overnight right now, and was ~2% earlier in the week. I normally have my phone on the charger at night, but didn't last night and I'm kinda glad I got to see this. Makes me realize why I was likely chewing through more in the day too.
You can see what I'm running below in my signature. Last night I had 5 instances where the phone woke on its own. Likely due to emails coming in.
Am I expecting too much from my modifications? Am I doing something wrong? I'm ready to toss AOKP aside because of other issues anyway, but yesterday I also read it was known to have some excessive battery drain as well. Without turning this into a battle to defend the ROM you use (like half the threads in here), if you have other suggestions, feel free to throw in a ROM suggestion. I'll attach some pictures of my battery screen so anyone willing to give me a hand can help.
Thanks in advance.
I had this problem when I was running franco too. Switched to leankernel and never looked back. I get about 4-6% drain overnight as long as I dont do something stupid like leave something running by exiting with home instead of the back button. I also have wifi on 24/7 and gps off unless im nav'in. No BT

I'm hesistant to blame the kernel. I was using franco prior to AOKP without issue. I didn't make that clear in the OP. I went 4.0.4 Stock -> Stock + franco -> AOKP b31 + franco. Things were good the first two steps and I'd like to think the first few days on AOKP.
Perhaps I have some background processes chewing battery - but there's nothing with a higher battery drain than Chrome beta with 2%. My phone idle and Cell standby had huge drain though. Could a weaker than normal signal cause this? Could my radio be the culprit?
Steps to best diagnose idle battery drain.
-Install CPU Spy and Better Battery Stats.
-Charge phone to full and let it run for several hours undisturbed (easiest to charge before bed, then unplug it when you know it won't be used till morning).
-Take quick note of your % loss per hour. Around 1%, you're golden. 1-2 is pretty normal. >3 and you've got issues.
-Launch CPU Spy. Most of the time should be deep sleep (we're talking about 95%). If your phone has been awake a lot, there's either an app that refuses to let your phone rest, or an OS/Kernel issue. If it's not extreme but noticeable, you likely just need to reign in settings on some apps to keep them from syncing so often or working in the background.
-Launch Better Battery Stats. Select Partial Wakelocks from the menu. These are all cases of apps waking the phone up, sorted by length. Go look at problem apps' settings/consider uninstalling if you don't need them. Kernel wakelocks should be low too.
Keep in mind that the goal here isn't really to get all these things to zero so do not obsess over small showings. Facebook with push notifications but updates set to never keeps my phone awake for about a minute or two every night, for instance. So does Handcent SMS. If you flash a rom and your phone needs to do a lot of syncing it's likely to show up in this kind of test as well. But for a night with nothing going on, nothing should be keeping your phone up for more than a few minutes total.

Weaker than normal signal can kill a phone battery, when I'm in lecture out in the bumfuck nowhere school I go to, I get -100 to -120dbm, which kills my battery while i'm at school. If thats your situation not much to do besides hope radios may increase your signal, but if not then your basicly as SOL as i am and may have to just charge it

The OS isn't always the reason for battery drain, many factors take into play.
How often you use the device.
Applications like widgets, email push.
Wi-Fi. If your not on it shut it down it else is always going to try to find a signal and drain battery.
Bluetooth. same with this.
Using the net.
Things like Google now, it's always running and trying to update info, shut it off of make intervals longer.
These are just some things to take into account, but at all use the phone different, and im not saying the OS doesn't drain but it solely isn't the only reason.
Hope this help.

I seem to be having the same problem. ..
Same here. With sync turned off, google now turned off, and most everything else that eats battery...
In the battery setting is shows that media is eating at least 25% battery.

I'm having the same issue. I read that the media drain could be caused by bad media files, but I didn't have any issues before this weird.
In my experience when you first update to a new samsung rom, the media using the battery is your phone updating the picasa albums...which stinks because it also eats your data like crazy if you are not on wifi and forget to turn off sync until wifi is available.
I've noticed faster than normal battery drain as well on my device. Normally by 4:30pm I'd be at 40-50%. Now I'm in the 20-30% range.
I'm going to try factory defaulting it soon and run it for a day or two. OR I might not even do that and just go directly to Task's AOKP or CM10.

Before everyone jumps ship, may want to try a new kernel. KT and a few others should work on the new release. Just make sure you choose one that works on JB TW and not ASOP.

Same here,
It's seem the culprit is the android.process.media.
Each time i bootup,android.process.media is running for about 30 min, non-stop.
I already do a factory reset+sd formatting, but no succes.
With startup manager, i can block that process, but you need to be rooted .
I use the same settings as before i did'nt upgrade yet..i got it fully charge with no texting and calls the next 1hr its already 80%..i think i would try to cycle first my battery for 2 more days..then i'll see if it still have heavy drains..thanks for the response guyss.

I just got this phone the other day and immediately updated to jelly bean.Though I have nothing to compare it to my battery drain seems normal. I'm losing about 5% an hour but that is with some use (it's new so I'm playing with it a lot).
I did notice more drain the first day of use (may have been because I was using it a lot) and noticed maps was taking up quite a bit of the battery and I wasn't using it. So I uninstalled the updates for Maps and then re installed it. Battery drain seemed much better after that and now the maps app doesn't even show up in the battery report(before it was about 3rd and it seems kinda high on yours as well though you may be using it).
i'm noticing about the same battery consumption as the stock ICS rom. about 1~2% per hour when idle and sitting, 2~5% per hour listening to music over bluetooth with the screen off, and 5~10% per hour surfing the net and watching videos and stuff.
Well after doing probably 5 resets on my phone , it seems like everything is working fine . I was having issues with the battery drain ,internet not connecting, and phone calls taking 2 minutes to connect.
I was having issues with high battery usage as well after updating to JB.
I froze most every app and widget associated with AT&T and Samsung (with the exception of AllShare) and flashed KT747 kernel and set governor to ktoonservative (default settings).
I am really never a heavy user during the day, but with the same usage I had on ICS, I average 15.5 hours (with the phone at approx 15% when I shut it off to charge) - screen on time between 2.5 and 3 hours; call time between 45 min and 1.5 hrs; media (which seems to be a big battery hog) only about 6 minutes. I use bluetooth exclusively, so that radio is on all the time the phone is on. I keep sync and background data on, but only turn mobile data on as needed.
I have recently installed cyanogenmod 10.1 onto my galaxy s3. The battery life since then has been very poor. If I leave my phone on without even using it, it drains about 1% every couple of minutes. Generally these issues are user related and not ROM related.
I was so frustrated with some of the ROMs when I first started out but then realized I was doing a few things wrong (mainly because these ROMs, including CM10 have very decent battery life).
First, I would recommend a clean reflash:
factory wipe / reset
wipe cache (some say twice)
wipe dalvik cache
install ROM
after rom loads, wait 5 minutes (don't touch at all) then reboot
now you must wait.. sometimes it takes 24 hrs or so for a ROM to correctly load.
Not sure how true it is, but some say to now drain battery down, then fully charge.
At any rate, I follow these steps all the time and works great!
Also, keep in mind that most of battery issues are user related.. so think about what settings, apps and kernels are being used on your end before question a ROM. This is why waiting 24 hours or so before installing all of our "crap" will give give the ROM more time to settle.
Hope this help!!!! Happy Flashing
Thanks for the reply. However, I have looked at what apps and processes are draining my battery. And it appears it is the "phone" process that is doing this.

This is all key as to how well your device will perform.

I have noticed something similar. I am coming from stock. I am going to guess my battery life is in the neighborhood of 10% less. I wiped everything before I installed CM. That said, this feels so much faster than stock.

Also, keep in mind that most of battery issues are user related.. so think about what settings, apps and kernels are being used on your end before question a ROM. This is why waiting 24 hours or so before installing all of our "crap" will give give the ROM more time to settle.
Hope this help!!!! Happy Flashing

Having the same issue with my Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 (p1 in Cyanogenmod). "Cell Standby" is taking as much juice as "Screen", and I am using Wifi only. I don't even have a sim card in the device. Wish there was a way to disable Mobile Networks without disabling Wifi via Airplane Mode.
I installed through Rom Manager as upgrade from CyanogenMod 9.1 with wipe. I will try the recommendations above and report back.
Try the latest nightly (or RC4) of CM10.1. The battery life has definitely improved a bit.
Samsung Galaxy s3 intl battery drain cm10.1
I recently installed cm10.1 nightly on my international S3, it has cut the battery life down drastically and seems to drain over 10% an hour, even when not being used.
I've tried everything that i've came across by searching and still haven't had any real gain on battery life. Doing a full wipe and reinstalling doesn't help, and i've given it time for battery to calibrate; no difference. Even with wi-fi and location services off i'm getting a big drain. I've even tried switching to Slim Bean, if anything the battery was worse still.
Firstly i'm getting that Android OS is eating up a large chunk (usually above 60%) and using BetteryBatteryStats i don't see anything out of the ordinary in terms of partial and/or kernel wakelocks. I really don't wanna have to put the stock Touchwiz rom back on but that seems like the ways it's going. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is there anything else i can try?
i find i get terrrible battery life on AOSP when i restore google through the setup. i skip thru the installation and open the play store to enter my gmail. then, before restoring my apps, i let it charge to 100%. honestly AOSP still doesnt have decent battery life, but it does improve if you play with it and try different things

I would respectfully disagree with you. I have run a number of ASOP based ROMs and find them better than stock in terms of battery life. Certainly better in terms of not making my eye bleed (as I hate touchwiz, but that is a personal preference). I find that SlimBean gets me the best battery life of the CM based ROMs.
To clarify, I get just over 1%/hour battery drain, when idle (as measured by BBS) with GPS and google sync enabled, mostly on LTE. My phone happily spends almost all the time I am not actively using it in deep sleep.
The recipe to achieve this is to disable google location reporting and history, avoid tons of widgets that constantly update themselves, disable samsung services that you do not use, and monitor battery usage to look out for rogue apps that do stupid thengs, like hold wakelocks when they should be idle. Dropping the minimum frequency to 192 MHz, and going to ASSWAX (CPU scheduler) and ROW (I/O scheduler) also helps.
To get decent performance you do need to install things properly. Which means ensuring that you don't have conflicting settings or random leftovers. I tend to dirty flash updates but you reallly do get better and more consistent performance going through the pain of a complete clean install (format system, clear cache, reload apps from the store) when you are switching ROMs. Only use TiBu to restore app data. Once you do this, in my experience rogue wakelocks are the biggest cause of lousy bettery perfromance, and you can track down and eliminate these. I have around 150 apps loaded and do not run any task manager/autokiller. My phone typically runs without any reboots or power cycles between ROM updates which equates to rebooting every couple of weeks to a month. I have seen over 2 months of uptime.
Certainly should be able to go 16-20 hours between charges which I would consider real world all day functionality. I guess my point is that rock solid stability and all day battery life is possible if you are systematic about how you do things.

I have recently installed cyanogenmod 10.1 onto my galaxy s3. The battery life since then has been very poor. If I leave my phone on without even using it, it drains about 1% every couple of minutes. When I look at the battery it says that the process of "phone" is taking up a huge amount of battery. Can anyone tell me why this is or how I can fix it?
