Hello everyone,
Since the beggining of this week, I'm experiencing a weird and suspicious event.
My wifi icon shows up like if I was downloading something 24/7 (please see the attached picture)
Seems like some app keeps using my wifi to send/receive data (could be a trojan ?).
I want to know your thoughts about this knowing that I rebooted both my phone and rooter several times already.
Thanks.
Hey dude,
That's normal. Most times bloatware is running as a back process on the phone. It also depends which apps you've got. Like news apps or if your Facebook or Twitter is active. Don't worry about it, I would say.

If you are worried about Trojans do a search on Play for one of the free security software. A good one will scan and show you suspicious apps you need to evaluate and possibly remove. Good luck
Best way to find out is root and use Android Firewall. It is free and useful. You can block and just check logs to see what is sending traffic.. and where.
Thanks for the answers guys
It does look like some heavy working app because It takes ages before a normal website loads.
@Beowulf_pt : that's exactly what I'm looking for, cheers !
You really need to look at what you have runing in the background and decide if you want all of it turned on. There is a lot of things that are on by default that you may not need like auto updates for apps. They will be checking to see if there is an update and use your bandwidth even if there is no update available.

It could be google instant upload / picasa (check your Google Account sync settings) or Dropbox Camera Upload (check dropbox app settings).if you have those enabled that could be the cause. I'd guess they're the most likely culprits in this case.

Since vodafone are starting enforcing their data allowance limits in October, I've been keeping a closer eye on my data usage and was surprised to see that, some days, I'm using 60-70mb. I knew that I was actively using a fraction of that so it had to be something running in the background.
I've got things like facebook and seesmic set to update once an hour and most other things set to manual or once a day updates. Most heavy data use apps like Spotify and Guardian Anywhere are set to only update over Wifi so I couldn't figure out what it might be.
After some searching, I managed to find an app which can break down data usage per app. It turns out that, in the space of a few hours, Calendar used about 20mb just running in the background. I'm guessing this is an HTC sense problem rather than an android issue with just keeping my gmail account in sync, since gmail and contacts aren't pulling down anything like the same amount of data.
Does anyone know how to set refresh intervals for calendar without affecting the other gmail account sync data? The only options I can find is straight on/off with no frequency options.
I'm rooted and using stock rom, since I prefer stability and even the most stable custom roms tend to have a few quirks here and there, but I cant afford so much data to be squandered when it doesn't need to be so might switch, but in the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions? I tried searching the forum but it doesn't seem like there's anyone else having the same problem.

Hi, would you mind posting a link to this app? I have the same problem and have searched for something to break down usage per app but couldn't find anything. Thanks, Stoatie
Wow! Now THAT explains everything and why I was averaging 50-70mb/day as well! I'm also watching my data usage, so thank you so much for this post...
As for an answer, my best advice for now....remove the tick that allows your calendar to sync with your gmail account. The only reason you need to sync your accounts is if you frequently use the web app and as a backup option. So, you can turn off that and your contacts sync and everything will still stay as is and save you precious data. Then you can sync everything once a day or every couple of days if you're into flashing roms or are prone to lose phones, etc.
Hope that helps...I'm about to try out and watch my data usage as well!
+1 for a link to the app thaat breaks data use down by app

+ 2 for the same app please - I know a few guys have been looking for such an app on here for some time now.
Much appreciated.
This is what I use:

appstorehq.com/networkstatistics-android-174793/app this is the one I used. It's been discontinued but is still available in the market. To be honest though, the one posted above looks like the better app, and it's free.
Thanks for the reccomendations

yesterday i got the little F icon in my task bar telling me i lost connection to facebook. since then i have not been able to log in to the sync account. i can use the FB app no problem. anyone else?
edit: wtf after trying 10 times i post this and was able to log in right away. the power of whining on the internet
edit 2: still havign sync issues with fb. pain in the ass
I had the same issues. Must be on Facebook's end.
Some months ago FB's app would absolutely not give me notifications when I opened the app, no matter what I did. The error was all on their end of things. Push notifications have never worked anyway, and since auto-updating is a battery drain I just decided to turn it all off. I still marvel at how they can have such a poor official Android app, and how any improvements to it are so small and infrequent. Yet their mobile website is not nearly as bad, and now it's of course much more possible to use the full site on a decent mobile browser.
I've had the same problem for a long time too.
On another note, does anyone know why the Nexus S gets fb comment notifications and the Epic doesn't?
Yeah me too. I was reading that fb sync is gone in gb. Is that true?

Just noticed this today, but same thing... sync problem since 6/3. Contacts are still sync'ing (through SNS, not the app... I don't have the app installed), it's the calendar sync that is not working.
Using a themed version and it is not having problems. Steal one from a rom/theme if you're rooted.

Themed version of what? Huh?
necro bump cause im having the same issue. Ideas?
I pre-load lots of videos on wifi while charging (or try to), but the youtube app signs me out automatically after I don't use it after whatever length of time, and I lose my pre-loads.. Never had this issue with phones in the past, anything I can do to stop it from logging me out?
Why use the app? Its always the first thing I uninstall when I get a new phone, install Flash and enjoy full Youtube on a browser.
Can you preload videos using the browser? Doubt it, thats one of the reasons I use it. I quite like it is another minus this signing out issue.
Yea I'm facing this problem too. I think it's due to multiple Google accounts? Coz I'm using 2 Google accounts and facing the problem.
Sent from my GT-N7105 using xda app-developers app
I thought that was the problem too, so I deleted one of the gmail accounts and the problems still there. I had 2 accounts with my last phone and never had this problem so don't really understand.
Yeah this is annoying me too, haven't been able to find a fix. I also have two Google accounts, and deleting one doesn't change anything.
In fact, all new YouTube apps annoy me, the one for ios is the worst piece of crud they've ever come up with. "We estimate that you would rather watch a screen composed of 6 moving pixels rather than waiting a little bit to buffer because of our stupid server priority system, and you cannot choose what you prefer". I am also facing similar issue and a few more. Play Store isn't updating or downloading apps. Contacts are not getting synced. Please check if you have these issues too.
Would tube mate not work well for your requirements?
I too am having the issue. Gets very annoying. I noticed it when I got the note 2. I have tried all that I can think of, to no avail.
I've read a bunch of different explanations for it, from Google+ integration causing the issue to gapps being the cause.
I don't know what the issue is but I've been having it since the latest YouTube update, so I'd imagine it's something to do with the app itself.

I have the occasional gapps force close, does anyone else?
Sorry for being lazy, but can gapps be flashed separately on any samsung based rom?

Although it doesnt help me any, its good to know I'm not alone with this problem... All I've figured out to stay signed in is to not close the app when I close all the others by swiping them. If you don't close it, it should leave you signed in.
I'm not having any issues with play store, everything else seems perfectly fine.
Keep getting a popup warning every morning when we turn on our Note 8.0 then start the wi-fi that says: "An update is required to access Samsung services". So far we've answered "No" each time the warning is displayed until I find out what they want to update and just how much extra data will be deposited onto the tab if we allow it.
Yeah...I'm paranoid but the fact is, we don't use any Samsung services. I'd really like to turn the Samsung account OFF if that's a safe thing to do.
What do you say Note 8.0/Android community? Should I allow the update or would turning off the Samsung account stop the update notices???
EnzoS
I believe you can turn off the account, as a fact I have mine turned off and whenever I re-flash a new Rom either Stock or Custom I always say No to the Samsung account, but you can remove/delete your Samsung account by going here https://account.samsung.com/membership/service/getServieInfoList.do sign in, profile, remove account.
On your tablet it will still show Samsung account and you will notice that it cannot sync "sync error" when you click that it will try to sync and will fail, after that the Samsung account will be gone or if you do see "remove account" just remove it with that.
I will include a picture of the services that will be stopped.
Hoping this helps

Another U break it by disabling it thread... I see this all the time with peeps disabling features in MS Windows.
I use Samsung account to get the latest Samsung updates. Without your updates, your link, OS update, and most of all Miracast sync will not properly function. As there are bug fixes and added features.
I even have Google play store setup to be automated with updates as well. It is the only way to track the 200 or so downloaded apps being fixed and what not. Still waiting for 100% compatibility for Android 4.4.x... which may never be. HA!
Though I use dummy a google email account that are setup with features disabled. Google has buried a lot of user settings, but at least you have them to disable.
@gooberdude you telling us that if you don't setup the Samsung account you will NOT get an OS update? I find that strange cause as I said before I never set it up and still was getting my OS updates when I checked for updates, now of course after I Root the device with either CF-root or "the always mentioned by you" Saferoot, it will say that my device is modified and that there are no updates available.
I really don't see the point of a Samsung account and feel that Samsung is wasting resources/battery with constant syncing in trying to duplicate stuff (calendar, email, app store, etc) by putting an additional and IMHO unnecessary layer into the OS that Google already does.

I use saferoot and it does not show device is modified, because it is not flashed. Many root options require flashing, saferoot does not. So the flag is left alone.
Now for Samsung apps, you must have an account to use half of them. So if you are not using any Samsung apps, then don't bother with making an account.
I think you can still use the Samsung voice commander without an account... as it is at least 2x faster than Google and works just the same.
Its all up to you on what you want to do for getting updates. For me I get 3% battery drain every 12 hours when in sleep mode with WIFI enabled. Including having updates and email active. That is too small to think about disabling accounts or turning off sync and updates.
It seems too many Android peeps tweak things so much that they are paranoid by not doing enough. I am a minimalist. I do what I can with what I got, and find what is the issue before modifying, adding or removing stuff. I have found that Samsung and Google can interact well with each other to make operation of the tablet quick and stable. Though, Google needs to work more on getting things right with voice search and media player.
At least Samsung has addressed and fixed many wee issues with proper updates since January and March. Just waiting for 4.4.x to be released so I have that available when I want to upgrade.
@gooberdude don't hear me wrong, I am completely with you as far as the paranoia goes, I myself am a firm believer of Stock Rom with minimal tweaks, when it comes to updates I always check manually, I use the tablet mostly for reading my ebooks and occasional web browsing, email and getting good battery life, right now I'm at 2 days and 6 hours with 32% left, of course I enable my wifi when I need it.
I actually did send you a PM a few days ago asking about safe-root, don't know if you have seen or gotten that or not, I would like to start using safe-root to it full potential

Thanks guys for the comments and recommendations but perhaps I didn't make myself totally clear in the initial posting. I'd simply like to know if I can avoid being bothered to update my account or apps or whatever by turning off the Samsung account on the tablet. I don't have to (nor do I want to) delete the Samsung account entirely. I just want to take it off the tablet (turn it off/disable it) with hopes that the popups warning me that "An update is required to access Samsung services" will go away.
As I stated earlier, we don't use any Samsung services and don't even download any apps from the Samsung apps store. As Harjan112 said: "...Samsung is wasting resources/battery with constant syncing in trying to duplicate stuff (calendar, email, app store, etc) by putting an additional and IMHO unnecessary layer into the OS that Google already does." We also are quite minimalistic and are very happy to run the tab with as little as possible running in the background and only update what we use if absolutely necessary.
Your comments in this regard will be appreciated.
EnzoS
You can remove the account from the tablet without deleting it entirely.
Go to your settings... Accounts... Click Samsung account then on the right side of the screen you will see Accounts with your email address click that, then in the top right corner you should see remove account.
This also should stop the update notice.
Hoping this helps

Harjan112...thank you very much for the detailed information. I needed to be assured that removing the Samsung account from the Note 8.0 was the right way to go and your explanation seems to be right on the money. The tab is my wife's and I don't think she would appreciate it too much if I decided to root the thing and experiment on it in any way (ha).
Now if I could only get an answer to my other problem: the Gallery's data file bloating itself for no apparent reason every time the tab is turned on or rebooted. It's pretty strange that (so far) 118 people have viewed the posting but not one reply...not even a foolish recommendation (ha).
Thank you again. I will definitely give it a try now.

I thought I was fairly clear on the description and I would appreciate it if you would check it out. I'd be more than happy if you had questions for me as I'm baffled by what's happening. Please read my post.

Ah, well we did not follow your past question... I found with my antivirus app, that I get over 350MB of cached images just with my mp3 ID3 tags having album art.
I found that if you install Xposed framework and add the Wanam Xposed module, you have he ability to disable caching of images. Since disabling, I get zero cache. As for clearing the cache, you will either add a cleaner app or replace your antivirus with one that has built in added utilities.
Though one thing about disabling cache, you will notice slower image redraws with any images that are stored on slow SD cards. I have 633x UHS-1 SD card installed, and do not find images having issues with delayed image redraws from SD.
Hope this helps.
Hi All,
Does the OnePlus 5T running OxygenOS 5.0.3 work with Dropbox properly. Dropbox the app loads, I can access my cloud files and upload files manually no problem. But the camera upload feature does not work all the time. If I restart my phone it will upload photos for a few seconds and then stop working again. Is this behaviour anyone else has witnessed too? I am at a loss at how to correct this problem. I contact OnePlus support, they claim its not their problem. I have contacted Dropbox support, they claim its a OnePlus issue with the OS interfering with the app. I feel like I'm stuck now with no solution. I haven't been able to come across anyone else with this problem. Any ideas/help would really be appreciated. I find the fact that it uploads for a short period of time then stops really bizarre. Would this support Dropbox's claim that the OP software is somehow interfering to kill off background transfers or something?
Have you checked the settings for anything that might require WiFi for uploads? I know with Google drive, for instance, it will only upload/download things if you're on wifi by default, but there is a setting to allow uploads and downloads on mobile data too. I don't use Dropbox, but that was my first thought.
My other thought is to to into your Doze settings and check it Dropbox is being optimized. If it is being optimized, you may want to try setting it to not optimized and see if that fixes your issue.
Good luck!

Yeah I've tried changing things like allowing Dropbox to upload via WiFi only, WiFi and data. I've also changed the settings around the battery level (i.e. only upload when battery is >30%).
I've turned off the optimise settings for Dropbox; that is the Dropbox setting under "Battery optimisation" is set to "Don't optimise" if that's what you mean. Is that what the doze settings are? I can't find anything specifically around Doze in the settings anywhere. Also in the app settings Dropbox is set to allow "Background activity". I've attached 2 screenshots, but I look at the 2 screenshots attached from different settings screens they say different things though. One says optimisation is off, the other says its on?
Finding OP very frustrating on this, its the only device I own that has this issue so its definitely something on the phone being funny. Dropbox are adamant its a OP issue not a Dropbox issue; but the OP support guys just blow you off instantly and tell you to talk to the app developer. Just no interest at all in looking into it.
