[Q] No reception, grey bars, on LiquidSmooth d2spr 3.1 Beta ROM - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Unfortunately, the main thread for the actual ROM got locked so I couldn't really get, or figure out, an answer to my problem. Hopefully someone will know the answer as I'm still confused.
I'm running LiquidSmooth's d2spr 3.1 Beta ROM and this morning I noticed I had grey bars; no reception. I just got home and did a complete factory wipe and reset (3 times), followed by doing cache clearing and dalvik clearing as well (also 3 times for both). I do a fresh, clean install of the ROM and I still get no connectivity.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I'd really appreciate it.

Do you use Roam Control? If you do and you had your device set to anything but automatic when you shut down to flash, then that would be your problem. I had this very issue and it sounds identical to your description. If that is the problem, install RC and change back to automatic. It could also very well be Sprint. I've had issues with Sprint today, I have no data or text messaging for most of the day. Also, have you tried the KT747 4.2 kernel? I remember seeing several users on that LS thread having some issues that were mostly resolved by using this kernel.

Make a nandroid flash a tw rom update prl and profile restore your nandroid

Killa - I've not even heard of that program, so no, not using it. I even reverted my phone back to complete stock and unrooted, and still it has no data connectivity.
Evil - I tried that after reverting back to stock and still no data connection.
So, there we go: I even reverted my phone back to factory stock with a LEN in the tar file and still it has those grey bars but no data connectivity. I'm feeling a bit annoyed right now.
EDIT: After reverting back to stock and doing all the fancy stuff, I still had no bars. So I called Sprint and turns out that it's a nationwide outage where they're working on their towers and services so everyone is experiencing the problems.

You could always master reset and reprovision maybe you corrupted your NVdata its been happening frequently on the note 2. You just need to get your MSL, go to about phone status and write down your MIN(if its different from your phone#) incase you need it. Then open dialer and type ##786# >reset > enter MSL, let it do its business and automatically reboot. Start HFA then after its complete if your phone# and MIN are missing in about phone> > status then dialer ##72786# > edit > MSL and input your 10-digit phone # and MIN with no spaces or symbols eg. 9990006666

Like I said, my service has been messed up for most of the day. I was told it should be working again tomorrow. We will see.
Cheers.

Mines been on and off since thanksgiving night when they suddenly decided to begin ripping apart the local towers for NV/LTE upgrades. I was in the middle of talking to my mom on the phone and *poof* towers got shut down for 2 days. Then after that they're on and off throughout the day from like 6am til 9pm and work fine all night and much faster on 3g, went from 1-1.5mbps to 1.5-2.8mbps(when they're on)

[Q] Major problem!!!

not sure where to begin, i suppose by listing my phone specs after root--
using the galaxy s2, (epic 4g touch) using kernal 2.6.35-8lostkernelexp+, build number starburst 11.13.11 v1.9.8r and running nothing but the honey theme.
i rooted the phone about a week ago and until today, everything seemed to work fine, then suddenly, i was unable to send pictures via text. not a real big issue, but i travel alot and sending pics back home by messages i a big deal for me. i thought it was just somethin with the phone, and after rebooting and rebooting to see if it would correct, it did not. however, normal text's would go through, just not any pics. i could send and receive normal words with no issues.
then just today, i totally lost internet connection--although the 3g is lit up on top, and i have 4 full bars of signal, i cannot surf, all i get is "unable to display webpage". since im at home, i turned on the wifi option and connected through the router in my house, and all worked fine-- i got online, send pic texts, etc...but when i turned wifi off, nothing.
now, back when i rooted the phone, i still kept getting the annoying "system update" messages that the phone normally does, forcing me to install whatever update the phone grabs. to prevent that, i did the steps on this site which was here--
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1388778&highlight=freeze+ota
and disabled my update notifications. well, back to the beginning--now i have no internet at all and god only knows what else is wrong that i have yet to discover.
only thing i can think of at this point, is to unroot the phone , return it to the way it was and see how it goes but i dont want to do that--
any ideas?

Why not nandroid a backup of your current setup and then do a full factory reset wipe and ODIN over a stock rom and see if that fixes it...if it does then there is no reason to bring a perfectly good phone back.
Diagnostic process bro, get on it.
However if that doesn't yield any results? Might be bad hardware (which I doubt) and probably not your fault.
EDIT: You haven't changed your PRL by chance, have you? Sometimes on 11115 or 00001 I get intermittent MMS function...and a few times, legit PRL or not, my wifi/4g have just stopped working. A wipe and stock-restore took care of that every time...though that was a week or two after the phone came out and we didn't have nearly as many tools and options as we do now.
Also, are you sure that you haven't somehow disabled 3G or put it into airplane mode? As insulting as that sounds I have to ask....
...sometimes even the brightest of us forget to plug things in.
Odin restore would be the first step.
I would try ##72786# in the dialer then entering your msl. After that just just hut yes then let your phone do its thing and reboot and reactivate. Just remember to cancel it during the firmware check.

Good call...or even just trying to refresh your profile under 'updates' would be the easiest place to start...
The mms issues are likely a limitation of the ROM you are running (I haven't run Starburst in a couple of months so you'll have to ask about that in the ROM thread.) Easily resolved by using a third party app for mms if it is an important feature for you.
As far as the rest, the code provided by beejis is the reprovisioning code, also called a hands free reset and there is a bit more to the process than he stated (at least for a noob.) Hit the toolkit link in my signature and you'll find step by step instructions.
If that doesn't work, starting fresh is an incredibly simple process.
Also, posting the exact same question in two different forums is breaking a Cardinal rule, so you probably want to refrain from that, it won't win you many friends.

yes i tried that, after the phone reboots, it says uptop "device not activated" and nothiing....i have to manually go into settings/about phone/system update and do it from there and even then, after a few secs, i get an error message saying unable to complete...

yes, tried that to.....get nothing but "error cannot complete" messages. all i can do now is make calls
If you have titanium backup, go into that app then click backup/restore at the top. Find system updates and click on it to see if it's frozen, if it is defrost it. Then try my steps again. Other than that I'd try to Odin a stock ROM.

ok thanks, i went back to odin stock rom, did it from qbking77's post and the phone is back on stock...however............still no internet/data!!
i did do the ##number thing, the phone rebooted but notihng happened--i thought it was supposed to auto activate or something. so i went into settings/about phone/update profile....it scanned and after a few mins, i still get the error message "update could not be completed, if problem persists contact sprint customer support"
so im back on factory rom, but nothings changed---im where i was before--no data/internet....
before installing a different rom and such, i figure ill stop here and see what other suggestions may come about....sooooo, what next?
Take your phone in to a sprint store, an exchange may be in your future.

gee i hope not... i got the phone dec 14th, cant imagine having probs this early....
what if i did a total wipe, factory reset? i know ill loose everything on the phone, and now that its not rooted any longer, i have no way to back up anything (or at least not that i know of)
just hoping theres a better fix than a return/ factory reset
Now that you are stock, call sprint tell them your issue (only tell then internet doesn't work) and they'll do stuff on their end to trouble shoot it. Hopefully that will fix it.

I would try this. This will reset you back to exactly the way you got the phone. If you are still having problems then you will have to take it back to Sprint.

That sucks, I'd recommend taking the phone to Sprint/where you bought it, and get it replaced/fixed. Good news is you're now back on stock so they won't really look into rooting as a problem. I always put phones back to stock before I take it in for a claim.

yea, dunno...
i did call sprint per Beejis reply here just above yours. after going through a ton of crap that i did yesterday and all today, the ## number crap, they tell me there's a nationwide outage. now i find that hard to believe since both my other phones in the house, wife/kid work just fine and they have data/internet and other ppl i know have no problems....i told the tech person that it just must be my phone only cuz everyone else's seems to work.
she did give me an outage number, maybe someone on here can verify it -- 8622911 so who the heck knows. what i do know is, i sure spent a heck of alota time on here, resetting my phone, unrooting, blahh blahh just to find out there's an outage which i doubt in the first place ...
we'll see,,,,,
If you are now stock/rooted, sounds like you need to use sfhubs auto root script to go back to stock recovery (overwrite your custom recovery) unroot, and take it back to Sprint.

its just stock odin at this point, as if it came from the store.
also, still no data/internet as of this morning. dont know why sprint
is telling me this bs story of an outage, and even if so, i find it way hard to beleive its a 4 day outage
but yes, looks like im headed back to the store-- i got it at best buy, have insurance and all that, but ill wait till tomorrow or something just in case this phantom outage corrects itself
by the way, where do i find this sfhubs root your talking about?
oh one other thing i discovered today also, now gps dont work either, no location, no search no nothing and it is turned on......... sigh

I need to brick my phone

The short version is my phone is not working worth a damn. Will not connect to data, even while on my airave. Is dropping calls and just generally being a jerk. Sprint says nothing is wrong with the device and will not replace it, even though I have insurance.
I am currently on Calks v2.9.1 - Kernel is 2.6.35.14-rogue_ET-1.4.1+ and the EL29 Modem.
I have tried to recreate the steps to hard brick my phone but have failed. Can anyone help as I am going out of town tomorrow and really need my phone to reliably work.

from what I understand if you flash ICS/CM9 and then try to flash back--or format, or perhaps anything at all--with a recovery+ICS kernel combo that there is a high chance of brick.
...I'm not so sure that I agree with your plan though...but that's easy for me to say, my phone works 100% and Sprint never gives me any ****.

Oops...forgot to add that yes I do. Phone was reset to stock and applied all OTA updates before I went to the Sprint store yesterday. I restored my nandroid because I forgot to save text messages that I needed.
Well if you wanted to go the insurance route they wont deny anything when the phone is at the bottom of a lake... or so you told them where its at and with the battery having been out since the incident... nothing to say about it.
But it shouldn't come to that if its defective. Have you tried returning to stock or stock rooted firmware first to investigate the problem? I mean if youve tried hard bricking id figure you have been there as well?
Flash an ICS rom, flash a kernel repack that has rouge recovery, then use rouge to flash back to a gingerbread rom. That almost guarantees a brick.

Do you just mean one of the ICS Leaks and when flashing back to GB should I just flash a stock or would Calks suffice. I just ask because I have it on my SD card already.
Just flash roms for other phones, almost instant brick.
or use the touch based recovery or pull battery when flashing a modem through odin
Isn't purposely bricking your phone to get a replacement considered fraud?

This sounds fishy. If your phone really cannot connect to data (even while on stock), that is a clear problem. They HAVE to fix it. I would not brick it either... they might be able to figure out that YOU did that.
If they continue to give you grief, contact Samsung support directly.

Get a video of it. Or stay in the store until it happens. Download a big file or something while you are there. This should be pretty easy to replicate if it really is as bad as you say. Also, have you tried a radio update? PRL and profile update? NVRAM reset?

I did a ##786# reset with my MSL and it still is spotty. I really don't know what the cause is. It started doing it a few days ago and is getting on my last nerve.
I just reset it to complete stock again. Going to go talk to the store manager and see what can be done before I brick it again. It is just getting old.

maybe a tower is out in your area. Also, when I am in fringe service areas the weather has a very big impact on signal propagation. Even if it is a clear day but very very humid....though that wouldn't explain your air-rave at all.
EDIT: I just got an idea....upload the 00001.PRL (verizon 3G) and see how it performs (without the air-rave even being plugged in)...if all is well there is something wrong on Sprint's end....

Sprint Galaxy Nexus Stuck On 1x Data

My 3G/Ev-Do data was working fine, but then I flashed a ROM and it stopped working. I flash a different ROM, still just 1x data. Use Odin to restore to factory state, nothing. Took it into Sprint, they claimed they thought they fixed it, but still nothing but 1x data. All my settings under the Android Settings menu are correct, all the settings under DATA menu should be correct. Short of a hardware failure I would have to think this is a software issue of some form. Would it be practical for just the 3G band portion of the radio to crap out? Does anyone have an suggestions for deeper settings that could be incorrect, and I should try modifying? Maybe some settings that are accessed through the VIA Ets tool?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! 1x data speeds make me want to shoot myself!

Did they reset your data profile when you went to the Sprint Store? I believe you can do this with *#*#72786#*#* and then enter your MSL code for your phone (can get that code from MSL reader in the market if you're rooted). It'll take a second to work then your phone will reboot and it will reactivate with Sprint. S'what I had to do to fix data issues on a few phones.

I was skeptical, but wow, Sprint should be paying you! You fixed in two seconds what one of their techs couldn't fix in 45 minutes. Thanks!
If anyone else stumbles upon this thread with the same issue, give what he suggested a shot!
Glad to hear it worked! That code is really just what I keep in my back pocket for really strange data issues that never seem to go away.

[Q] Rogers Galaxy S3 4G/LTE but I'm stuck on Edge?

Hey guys, I'm using the Galaxy S3 and my current carrier is Rogers. I've always been on 4G in the area that I'm in, and with the countless roms I've installed I've never come across any problems. Today I was trying out some new roms, but when I flashed them, I noticed that it swapped from 4G to E(aka Edge). Even if I flash back to my nandroid backup or even a fresh install if the previous rom I was using, I'm still stuck on Edge. Now even though it says I'm connected to Edge, never mind reduced speed, my internet just doesn't even work at all. For some reason even if I'm connected to wi-fi, no matter what I do it says there's no connection. I've read about flashing modems, which I have tried and it seems I'm doing it wrong? I put it on to my sd, boot in to recovery and flash it, but whenever I do I just go in to an endless boot loop. I've spent the past six hours pulling out my hair and trying to get this fixed but no solution yet, so now I've put my hope in to you guys! Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
P.S. I'm sorry if I can't reply back right away, I'm currently doing night shifts at work and even though it's 9:45am here, it's technically my bed time, so I will get back to you as soon as I can!
Some extra information if it may help - The rom I was using that worked properly was Triune 2, I've played around with a few roms since, but the one that originally swapped my 4g to Edge was Mark of the Dragon 3.0.
I can think of two possibilities:
1) Some ROMs will reset your phone's internal network settings to only use specific types of networks (e.g. when I first got my phone, the CM10 build I flashed at the time disabled LTE). You can check this by dialing *#*#4636#*#*, going into "Phone information", and scrolling down to "Set preferred network type"; you'll want one of the LTE settings.
2) Reportedly, your phone's IMEI will sometimes be erased during a ROM update (check this in the Settings -> About phone -> Status menu, or in the same "Phone information" menu as above). Check here if that happened.
Hey, I gave number 1 a shot and everything was fine, so I took a look at option 2 and my IMEI isn't gone, but it's showing "0". I searched online and it seems like "0" means it's been deleted, so I'm about to give it a go and see if I can get it up and running. Anyways, thanks for the reply! I'll post and update on how everything works out.
*UPDATE* Alright, problem fixed! I'm back at 4G, everything is running smooth and fast! Took a little bit but everything is working fine, and now I know how to fix this problem if it should arise again, thanks again for the help, I appreciate it!
Hey, I'm back again. Well, I thought the problem was fixed, I was back on 4G all day until a little after I started work at around 10:30pm when my network swapped back to Edge and it's been there since(now 6:57am). My IMEI is still intact as well. I've tried flashing back to stock with odin and injecting the file to see what happens but no luck. Unfortunately I haven't reached the 10 post marker which means I can't ask for help on that part of the forum yet, so here I am in your hands once again, any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated!

Out of curiosity, have you checked the "set preferred network type" setting again?
I've also heard recently that there may be some problems with Rogers APNs in non-standard ROMs, so it might be worth checking your APN settings.
Or, it could be an LTE network outage, unlikely as that seems...
Yes I have and everything is fine. However, I was looking around at a few things some other people have done, not with the exact problem I have, but similar, I tried something out and it worked. Dial *#197328640#>UMTS>DEBUG SCREEN>PHONE CONTROL>NETWORK CONTROL>BAND SELECTION>LTE BAND PREFERENCE>LTE ALL, let it sit there for about 30 seconds and then reset the phone. Do it again, go in to BAND SELECTION and then choose AUTOMATIC, wait 30 seconds and reboot your phone again. I'm back to 4g and actually, it seems faster than when I originally had 4G, but I think I'm just used to how slow Edge is now . Although the other fix got me back to 4G as well, but then it swapped back to Edge so I'll wait for at least 24 hours before I can confirm it completely fixed. Once again thanks for the response! It hasn't been 24 hours but I thought I'd report back while I'm on my break. I'm still at 4G so things seems to be going well, hopefully it won't go back as it seems like it will stay at 4G. So, unless I'm having troubles again, rather than waiting the 24 hours and posting an update, think of it as a good thing that I don't report anything(or at least I will, since it's my phone ) Thanks again for the help, I appreciate it!

I just switched to Fido (uses the same towers as Rogers) and this advice is what got my LTE working.

Thanks do much for this, I had the exact same problem after flashing MiuiAndroid and Wicked Sensations. Don't know which one effed it up but it was definitely one of those two. Also, I Don't think it is a placebo effect on the speed increase, cause mine is blazing fast after implementing this fix. You should maybe re-title the thread so others in this situation can find this fix, good find and thanks again!
Just want to confirm that this particular code can only be entered from a stock dialer? I I tried entering it from cm10's dialer and it doesn't do anything.

Correct.

There used to be a different method on the forums but all posts involving how to inject imei and then restore data were removed.

2 things that i can think of...
1)Make sure you have the LTE option selected in your Mobile Networks.
2)Take a look at your APN settings for you carrier. Flashing roms sometimes erases these settings.
That's where i would look first...
Cheers

Please let me know if you fix this. I'm having the same problem, and playing with LTE band selection doesn't work. When I force the band selection, the phone won't even go into service. The same thing happens with WCDMA.
Apparently, the nvbackup stores more than the IMEI. Even when you replace the IMEI, nobody seems to get data back. Unless, of course, you had a backup. Which, unfortunately, I was not smart enough to do....
Hey guys, I have the exact same issue as this:
-I flashed CM10.2 from a CM10.1 nightly which wiped my IMEI. I injected the IMEI using NV-items reader/writer.
-Reloaded stock ICS rom, IMEI returned but couldn't get up from EDGE
-Tried using the peoplesarmy's removed IMEI restore tool, didn't do anything
The phone still works, only its on EDGE all the time.
Literally the only solution for me was using my warranty and getting a new phone.
REPEAT: BACKUP YOUR **** OR YOU GOTTA GET A NEW PHONE!

APNs switching?

Starting about .. oh, 3 or 4 months ago, I've noticed my phone dropping data, OR, getting stuck on 'E' or 'G' symbols, even in areas that have LTE. Every time I notice this, I go into APN Settings, and I find that the selected APN has changed. (Usually from 'T-Mobile US LTE' to just 'T-Mobile US'..)
I don't have any APN apps or anything, but have been running AOSP v4.3 (then v4.4) since about the same time this started.
Any ideas on what to check? Am I going crazy? (Is my phone going crazy?)

You could delete the APN's that you don't want it to switch to. Just leave yourself with the one you want, and it shouldn't be able to change.
Now that MIGHT cause it to switch to nothing, leaving the phone without any connection. But if that happens a revert to the nandroid backup you make before trying this would fix it, at least back to what you have now.

I went ahead and tried this. So far, everything seems to be okay. I'll keep an eye on it for the weekend, and see if any oddness occurs.
Thanks!

Okay -
This didn't work, but it DID change the.. er.. way to fix -
What happens is that the data symbol will vanish - no data. Voice works okay. Since there's only ONE APN, if I go into the settings, it's still selected. (Leading me to believe that when I had multiple APNs, the top one WASN'T actually 'selected', the code was just marking the first one as active, when none were. Silly Radio lists..)
I had to add and save a 'dummy' APN entry, then select it, and then reselect my real APN, and it starts working.
It happens maybe once every other day, so it's not a big issue.

Yeah - the phone seems to ignore that. Meaning that, it will still drop data, forcing me to unselect and reselect.
Though, I spoke to the developer, and it looks like it's a ROM issue, actually, and I'm running the lastest build now, which is *supposed* to have the fix. We'll see after the holiday tomorrow.
