I will be moving to an area that doesn't have any type of broadband available other than a cell phone signal and satellite. Now that T-Mobile's 70$ pay as you go plan is truly unlimited 4G with absolutely no caps I would like to know if it would be realistic to setup a second account and cellphone or mobile broadband device and just pay 70$ for mobile broadband that would only be used at home?
Would I be able to torrent? What are my limitations going to be?
Thank you
u could get a mobile data plan on a phone (i stress phone because it'll be cheaper) and then get a USB sim modem off craigslist. Get a newer compatible router (Asus n56, n66) and then plug the USB modem into the back of it and set it up. This method would provide your entire house (wireless and Ethernet) with internet as if you were connected to broadband.
I can torrent on LTE with my skyrocket at reasonable speeds, so I don't see why 4g would be any different. it IS however very signal dependent, so having at least 2-3 bars is ideal

i have hot spot 9.99 this allow me to use my dash as modem so i can access internet with laptop, i was wondering can i use this at home or have to be on there hotspot to use...
they have another plan T-Mobile Smartphone Unlimited Web + 400 for 24.95
this plan allow me to use the dash as modem and use internet anywhere? because im going to texa and where im staying at they no internt i cant live with out my internet lol
thank you for your time
the $24.95 unlimited definitely lets you use the dash as a modem. i just did that a few weeks ago (i had a sprint mobile broadband card with me & that didn't even get reception where i was. my phone did though!)
I was an Alltel customer forced to Verizon. That I won't get into. Anyways with my old Alltel 6800 i could share the internet when I was out of town on my laptop. Is this possible with the VZW TP2? Do I have to pay to teather? If I do I will be pissed as it will be another thing that VZW has screwed up for me.
I have gone as far as running the Modem Link but farther than that I have no idea.
Try a program called CM Internet Sharing. Do a quick search and you should have no problem finding a cab. It turns your phone into a wi-fi hotspot. I don't know specifically about sharing via bluetooth or usb for Verizon, but that program should do the trick for ya.
Just be cognizant of your data usage
microsofts internet sharing app doesnt work? if they removed the icon its in the \windows folder. you have to sync it up with active sync just before. if not, what i used to do on my old cmda phones was set it to modem mode and set up a a dial up connection on the computer with the number being #777 (i think) and no user name or password. you cant have data and phone at the same time on cdma and the speeds of verizons 3g are as slow as atts 2g, but whatever works.
You can also try WMWiFiRouter. It turns your phone into a wireless router that you access via WiFi.
may i ask why i must pay attention to the amount of data i use? i never had to before, and since i used pandora and a few other websites 9 hours a day, i use alot of data. is "unlimited" not really unlimited. I'm at 1.4GB for the month.
I appreciate the help, i will try all of these.
there is pretty much no way to monitor data usage. thats how they getchya. if it says unlimited it probably is really unlimited. there would be too many lawsuits if it wasnt. if you really dont have unlimited then i wouldnt tether. computers are not frugal with data usage.
they do very much frown on tethering and the phone "phones home" althouh there are easy way around it.
CM wifi is very cool app and i used june fabrics"PdaNet" when i used verizion on palm 600; so easy to use that i installed on this sprint phone
well i was still able to teather on the alltel based phone, on verizon network, without getting yelled at. I really only teather when i am out of town for car meets and we need to get online for the schematics. Like i said, im not frugal when it comes to data, even just on the phone. I just don't need another $30 added to my bill for this. Also i did hear that ATT (I am verizon) is limited 5GB/month on their "unlimited" plan
i did 5gb a month a few times (ive torrented on my phone ), ive never gotten extra charges.
Clear and sprint both share the same 4g wimax network. I used Clear's chat service to ask if the HTC evo 4g could be used on their wimax network. The customer service person said that they could not support third party hardware.
They use the WAN MAC ID or the MAC ID to associate hardware with an account.
Could someone look at their evo 4g and see if there is a MAC ID printed on it somewhere. I think it could still be used on Clear's network. One could give the MAC ID of their Evo instead of the Clear 4g+ (3g/4g usb) modem.
Looking at my G1 there us no MAC ID printed anywhere on it... doesn't all wireless hardware have a MAC ID?
Just curious, why would you want to do this? If it's so that you can get Clear 4G in areas where Sprint 4G is not yet available, that's probably not such a good idea. Clear's modems have much more powerful antennas than our phones, so even if you get Clear service with a modem, the reception on your phone might be marginal to nonexistent.
This is also dumb as sprint owns clear... so they can use "each others" networks with no problems. Essentially it is the same network.
I will simpy state, Clear sales rep do need to use Mac address to activate that modem and or usb.
Even though they will have you register a name/password - the day you recieve your clear modem or aircard - you wont be required to enter any name/pw. simple plug and play.
your account IS linked to that mac addy.
So with that - it is safe to say and I AM ASSUMING all Evo also has a mac add and are already activated to use the clear system. This is to prevent future modems/phones to have access to the clear network.
Even though Sprint owns 56% of clear, clear and sprint isnt one.
Clear uses Sprint and Sprint uses Clear. Sorry I cant specify more on that.
Lastly - Clear goes through Pinnacle.
Ask a clear rep if he recieves a sprint discount.
they will say yes - 24% but when they go to sprint - the company name falls under pinnacle - sub clearwire.
The MAC address isnt printed anywhere but when you are connected to 4G it will display it to you in about phone. You would not be able to activate it as a clear 4G+ modem because all MAC addresses for that modem are in clear's system and we can not even activate a sprint branded 4G/3G modem, even one of the same model. They say it is because of the software of the modem, autodirects to sprint billing, and the system not finding the modem as a real modem.
Now if you are trying to save money by using the EVO as a modem and not to make calls have you tried http://www.sprintrelaystore.com/ it allows for data only accounts, even adds the subsidies in so its still $200, and at $40 a month ($30 data, $10 premium) it is the same as a 4G only modem with clear. You could add the $30 tethering option or root the phone and tether for free. This is actually cheaper then using the 4G+ modem from clear which is $55 a month. On the relay store sprint charges $36 activation and $12 shipping ontop of the phone cost (both normally waived, if you ask instore and over the phone, on normal accounts). Your purchase total would probably around $390 before the $100 rebate.
Also note that the 4G modem in this phone is much weaker than the USB modems and home modems that we sell. I live in a somewhat deadzone only getting 1Mb on my USB and 1.5Mb on my home modem and I cannot connect at all on my EVO.
Also note that we will be offering phones this winter, then which we should be able to use the EVO on along with whichever phones become available later (one HTC and one Samsung confirmed).
Your WiMax MAC can also be found on the box your phone came in, I doubled checked this with the number displayed on the phone when WiMax is activated.
Thanks everyone for your replies.
I was interested in doing this because I am using gozmo5 and google voice with sipdroid for free wifi-voip calling.
I figured I could save some money by having a data only connection... I guess back to the original plan, usb modem and clear spot personal wifi device.
Did you not consider having a sprint relay account?
I have the stock Samsung Galaxy Nexus. AT&T Store put in a new Sim card. I kept my grandfathered data plan. I used Speedtest to check download speeds to confirm my observations.
Using wireless at home, I am getting about 11Mbps download speeds.
With cell phone connection at work or on the road or at the A&T Store - I am getting about 7kbps download speeds.
I went to the AT&T Store. They say there is nothing wrong with my data plan or AT&T linking. The APNs are right. I am on the high speed (HSPA+) network.
I am think that the wireless radio is different from the cell phone radio. If so, then the wireless radio is working right, and maybe the cell phone radio is not? Does this make sense? Is anyone else had this problem and found a solution?
Thanks in advance,

Unless your wireless internet in your house is from a tethered/hotspot device or some sort of "mifi" (does AT&T have these yet?), it will certainly be faster than your cellular connection. That is a function of the backhaul behind your internet connection at home versus the backhaul to the towers your phone is connecting to outside of your home. And even with those towers, each one may have a different load and different server access, and so speed will vary between towers, or even the same tower throughout the day. The wifi radio and cellular radio are separate in the phone, and the difference in speed you are seeing is a difference in the signal delivered to the phone, not the phone's ability to receive signals.
I live in Shaker and i'm getting 5mb/1.5 most of the time. When i head downtown my speeds drop by 2/3.
I'm using the suggested APN settings from this forum.
Thanks for the info.
The rep at the AT&T Store using his iPhone had 8Mbps download speed. Many of the posts here on the forums are reporting cell radio download speeds of 3-8 Mbps.
I realize that download speeds over the cell radio can vary, but when they never go above 7kbps, that suggests the cell radio is defective.
I guess I have to try to exchange the phone, if Expansys will help me.

Maybe it's defective. Try comparing it to AT&T's Galaxy S II (not the skyrocket!), or the Atrix, or any other HSPA+ Android (should have similar kernel when stock) device in the same location (the iPhone probably routs more power to its antennae since it has a battery-life surplus due to a smaller screen and lack of true multi-tasking/background processing).
My speeds have been dead on with what my Atrix got.
redo your apn's, make sure you're using auto or USA bands and try wcdma only temporarily. In the *#*#4636#*#* menu. The apns I think are under call settings.

Well I called AT&T Support. I finally got to 2nd level support. The tech their checked. He finally said there does not appear to be anything wrong with the phone. He said my unlimited data plan (grandfathered from 8 years ago) was the data plan for a feature phone. He asked what I had previous, and I told him an AT&T Tilt, which I ordered with the Media Max 200 Bundle.
He must have scratched his head, but said that the data plan I had did not support smartphones (huhh?), but he could upgrade my data plan to a smartphone plan for an extra $10. I asked about my grandfathered unlimited data, and he said the new smartphone plan would still be unlimited. (GREAT!) And no new contract!
He had me change the APN to the HSDPA one. Then he had me reboot the phone and check speedtest. My download speed was now up to an incredible 1.2Mbps, lots better than 7kbps. So I can live with that. I am not sure why i can't get the 3-5Mbps that others talk about, but this'll do.
Thanks for code reveal, very useful.
The reps are doing something weird trust me (At&t rep here). They're either putting the wrong plan or your device may be defective. If you have unlimited you got to have a 30$ feature called SMT PERSONAL. If its the 2gb plan it should be 2gb for smart phones.

lol at incredible 1.2 mbps. Check your speed at 2am when its not peak and tell us. Either you're in congested area or something else is wrong.

I did get an $30 smartphone unlimited plan (old one was $20.). Is "SMT PERSONAL" some add on feature in addition to Smartphone Unlimited Plan?
Thanks for all the feedback. I have a callback scheduled Mon at work when I'll have a better connection. Data from home generally sucks anyway

So my work phone is a full unrestricted plan. Yes I know att doesn't theoretically have unlimited data. But my question is would that sim give me LTE connectivity in my tablet. Or is there a special tablet package that needs to be enabled on the sim that costs more?
TLDR; Can i use my att LTE sim that i use for my cell phone in my Nexus 7 tablet?

Here is how it works in Germany (and I assume that is how it works everywhere).
You have a SIM Card which is on a GPRS Plan (normal data connection) and if you buy a special option for LTE you account will be upgraded and the SIM-Card which was running on GPRS is now able to connect to an LTE Network.
So in essence, you need an special LTE Plan, which cost more money. AND you need to be in an area where LTE is available, otherwise you pay more but the data speed is as slow as without LTE.
And DO NOT BELIEVE that you are getting 100 or more MBit/s, that is the maximum speed for that LTE Channel in the optimum distance.
If there is another LTE User with you on that channel, the speed drops. Last seen here in Munich at the Octoberfest where 30 or more people tried to connect to one particular LTE Access-Point and the system slowed down to a crawl.
On the other hand, if you have an LTE enabled phone/pad, you are getting normally a better speed performance out of an GPRS connection.
And yes I can be wrong because I am human, laugh. But based on my experience I am not.

My phones Sim is a LTE enabled sim. What i need to know if theres a special TABLET option that needs to be enabled on the sim for it to work in the tablet. Theres mixed answers around the web.
