[Q] Not registered on network. - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hello, I am new to xda so please go easy on me. I have been in the wireless industry for over 10 years. I was mostly a Blackberry guy, but recently had to make the switch to Android. I would rate my knowledge of Android as just above average. Anyway, I bought a T-mobile Galaxy S3 from a guy and when we met up the phone worked just fine. When I got back to the house, the phone would not make phone calls, text, get on the internet or anything. When you try to make calls, it says "Not registered on the network". I started to do some troubleshooting and found out that the phone will work fine when on UMTS, but not when on GSM. Examining the phone, I noticed that there was a scratch on the back housing where the GSM antenna is, so I ordered a new back housing. Even after installing the new back housing, the same problem exists. I thought maybe that the phone was possibly stolen and for some reason only blocked on GSM signal. So I called T-mobile and they said that the phone is not listed as blacklisted. Not sure what else could be the problem. The person that had the phone before me unlocked it and used it on att. Of course he says there were no problems before and will not refund. Please let me know if there is anything further I can do to try to fix this phone as I do not want an expensive paperweight. Thank you in advance for your help.

Can u check and see if you have an IMEI number showing when you dial the code *#06#? You should see a 15 digit number. I had a similar problem where I could only get 2g signal. When I checked my imei it had disappeared. Luckily I had a backup available.
Sent from my SGH-T999

Might want to also check Settings>More>Mobile Networks>Network Mode and tick it to GSM/WCDMA Preferred.
And finally, since he was using it on AT&T, you might need to check the APNs and make sure they are on TMobile's and not AT&T. If not, then you can manually put them in there (don't forget to hit save when done).

The APN settings are correct, the network mode settings are set to gsm, wcdma, lte. If I go to network operators and search, ATT will be the only network that pops up when I am in GSM area. I have hard reset the phone several times. I don't know anyone with ATT or I would try their sim card in there. My sim card works in other phones. I have reset the APN settings as well. Is there a possibility that they messed something up when they unlocked the phone to be used on ATT? The IMEI does display when I do the *#06# thing. I do appreciate you guys helping me out.
Thank you,
Brian Scasta

same issue
I'm having the same issue with my tmobile phone. I bought an s3 a few weeks ago and it had been working fine up until a few days ago when the signal dropped entirely. The same error appears - "not registered on network." At first I thought it was a rom I had installd but after flashing several roms I know this isn't the problem. I've tried searching for network operators, etc but still get the same error.
Any suggestions?

[Rogers] Not allowed by SIM

My original thread has not been moved from the old forum, so I'm just going to link it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1757711&highlight=not+allowed+by+sim
Anyway, someone on HoFo posted that if you change your APN to non-LTE, the problem goes away. I did that yesterday and so far I haven't seen the error. However, my coworker did the same thing on his S3 and still got the error. This issue is specific to Rogers network, as other people used their unlocked Rogers S3 on other carriers and did not see the error, but once they put in Rogers SIM back in, it was back. I wish Rogers would get off their ass and fix it!
This happens also on Telus. Not sure if I've done this APN trick, but I have HSPA locked and the modem locked on 850mHz through the service menu *#2263#, and I still get this error sometimes.
a quick flight mode toggle always fixes it.

Yeah, same here. It's just annoying when you're in a hurry and need to make an urgent phone call.
Not sure if this helps but I sell cell phones and a memo was released by rogers stating its a error in the firmware and that when rogers reception drops or its out of range it will say this, instead of showing no signal. Its states rogers and samsung are working on a fix for it. Its probably more noticeable on the rogers network than others because they are currently working on expanding there network in most of Canada therefore its probably causing signal drops every now and then.

still having this issue after OTA update
TELUS
Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I purchased an unlocked S3 about 3 weeks ago and I just got this error today. I was not able to make any phone calls until I used the flight mode trick. I thought this problem had been fixed? I'm with fido so it's part of the Rogers family.
Does anyone else still experience this issue?
haven't had this error since the last time i posted which was September
although i find it more often that my phone would lose reception in places or situations where before i would have reception, but just SIM error.
so my guess is that the phone hasn't yet reconnected to the network after losing reception (from underground parking etc) and before it was "showing" reception when it had none and came back with SIM error. now it just flats out says what's going on, which is no reception.

[Q] Connection blocked by the provider?

Hi guys... Im from Panama and i have a question let tell a little background
Here in Panama we have 2 providers that have LTE and uses band 28 this is why i bought my zenfone from taiwan with band 28 reception... this is the problem i put my sim card from one of the provider and guess what didnt got LTE and they told me is becuase is my phone that is not allow in their network (they are selling phone which is LTE ready according to them) But i friend of my put his simcard of his samsung S6 from the second company (uses the same 28 band) and my phone got LTE rightaway... So is somthing the provider can do to stop phones coming from outside getting LTE? Right now my phone is getting HSPA+ that is H+ but nothing else
And in the screenshot my phone is detecting the network which is the first LTE that you see. The second LTE with Forbidden is from the other company from which my friend have his simcard..
Thanks for the help

mmm, should you probe further to your Service provider on why it is not allow, could it be that your version was the TD-LTE? which only china has? they use difference accessing method.
the possibility of SP locking the network base on phone is rare as they need to spend extra server to cater for such banning and this does not goes into their profit and Ike customer in general. It could also be that your sim card does not have LTE function. this function is stored in HSS ( HLR) where all your services are known in the network.
Check further then post here. seem to me it is more of your sim account issue.
i post tomorrow im going to talk to my provider and hear what they have to say
Thanks for the interest

Hi good evening , well i came back and I talk to my provider this time the guy told me that my phone should work withouth any problem since it uses the same LTE band as they do which is band 28. He told me that aparently they have to activate something in their network in order for my phone to get LTE signal so they will be calling me tomorrow to tell me if I need to do somthing else. I ask him if i need to use a contract or if prepaid work too. And he told me that it also work with a prepaid service. He told me that my simcard is LTE ready and should not have any problems but told me that they will investigate. Also they dont use TD-LTE.
I will post a soon as I have the answer from them

dont trust your telecom, some truth are not allow to tell customer about, i work for 7 years for 2 different telecom.
if your phone is TD-LTE, you can never connect to your network no matter what, just see it as a door with a wrong key
if it is FD-LTE, it is most likely the settings on your profile is not provisioned, the Customer service may tell you they see it is up but in fact the system that they are reading the data from MAY not be unified with the back-end servers.
It may also because someone in-experience have wrongly provision your SIM profile.
Lastly it could be then handset is faulty with LTE service.
the best way is to call up the telecom with another phone and proposed a testing right when he/she is attending to you. ask them to forward the testing time/ MSISDN to the supporting engineering for wireshark trace. they CAN straight away tell you what problem you encounter.
you are at least someone in the forum that listen and understand truth. some others in another part of the forum are stubborn as hell..
hope you gotten the FD phone and it works for you.

Thank you very much for all these usefull information you are giving me that you gain from your expirience I really apriciate all your help and kwoledge and this will help me explain my self better when i have to talk with them.
I came here becuase there a lots of thing i still need to learn about telecomunication and bands in general (Im actually studing medicine but this calls my attention)
Well i im sure that I got a FD phone because with the second telecom (the one that my friend uses) my phone got the LTE right away so im sure thats not the problem and becuase it got LTE im sure that my phone is working all good.
Since the phone is FD then the most like thing is happening is that they havent afiliate the services correctly (that what the guy from the telecome told me) and that technicians will set up that in their side. They will call me tomorrow and tell me whats happening.
He also told me that aparently there have to be a second registration of the data service which is the one for the LTE that hasnt been done and this could be the reason of the problem.
The only thing is about the testing you you are telling me. Let me see if a got it right. Tell them to foward the time/MSISDN (its the phone numer) to engineering to wireshark trace (this is for looking that the connection and the setups are correct and the case they are not then look where is the problem if in their side or my side)
Again thank you very much. Really apriciate your help and im came here to learn and maybe some else with the same problem have the answer here
Good night

let me put it in this way
1) call up your telco and during the call, tell them that you will be performing a test for packet transfer on your phone now.
2) just try to manually connect to their LTE network by search.
3) let them know the time range that you are doing this (eg. 14:00 to 14:05)
4) get them to let the back end engineer do his/her work tracing > SGSN signalling > DPD context.
5) wait till they come back with you on the details why is it not working for you.
the handset send a signal to the radio (UTRAN) and request a data service (LTE), in this case it the radio will forward this request to the SGSN to S Gateway( just take it as signalling module), if everything is okay, it will inform the UTRAN ok to set up tunnel (in layman context, it is the traffic medium) > so P Gateway will directly link from user UTRAN to it and out to the web via PDP context.
hope this is not heavy for you, in between there are firewalls which the network engineer is able to pick up where the data is dropping for your case.
oh i see that you are going to be a medical personnel, all you need to know is that radio are everywhere and there are some instrument that is using certain band of frequency which will interupt (crosstalk) to your instrument.
the normal cases are WiFi band as it is under free band and medical usage.
For cellular, it does not matter. the reason why hospital ban it in sensitive area is because folks in the older days are using analog signal for transmission (ASK,FSK,PSK) these are to determine the data status of any radio instrument. however nowadays, we no longer use them and systems are all digitized. so it doesnt matter if you broadcast radio in sensitive room because we are using higher tech like QAM64 etc.
lastly the reason why medical still insisted that no radio in the sensitive room is all because... changing of something might affect something else, even if they know what i said, they worry that other stuff might complicate. look at Airport during flight, it is the same reason, handphone can switch on during flight but they say no. its the same reason.
The top management knows nothing and the engineers is reluctance to set things right, too much work to do.
you can read more into those, i know pilot also need to learn about these too!
hi good night im still waiting for them to reply so i think they will call me on monday. When i contact them ill ask them to do this test you are telling me and ill get back with you as soon as i have results.. Thanks and have a good night
hello a came back and with good news. The lady sold me the wrong sim card and they also had to activate LTE services. Now everything its working great thanks for the help sooty84.
Right now im getting 25Megabites pes sec down 20 megabite up i think its because LTE network is new
I think this can be mark with resolve

Unlocked issued on Cricket Network

I have the LG E980 Optimus G Pro POS phone. Had it unlocked, inserted a cricket sim card and though I can sometimes make calls when it decides to connect, I very rarely get 4G or LTE, mostly its a little "E" with one or two bars of signal. The phone will not send photos but surfs the web on wifi with no issues.
I have read through this forum and found some workarounds with StraightTalk users but can't find anything for Cricket users. I have tried creating an APN with Crickets data but the Authentication Type is restricted from any editing leading me to believe that this phone is locked to AT&T's network regardless of what unlock codes I entered successfully.
When I attempt to make outbound calls the phone usually takes 3-4 attempts as it drops the call and forces me to redial eventually after enough tries it connects but the quality of the call suks monkey nutz.
I don't really know if rooting will help. I did try a workaround straight talk users were having success with where the APN was edited with the SIM card removed but even that was fruitless as the AT&T APN kept showing up over and over again once I reinserted a SIM card.
This phone is slated for air to wall impact testing very soon if this waste of money can't be fixed and my thoughts that AT&T locked this junk down turn out to be true. So if anyone is knowledgeable with Cricket networks using this phone any guidance is appreciated and in advance I humbly bow to your expertise in these matters. THANK YOU.
I use the phone on Cricket network and have had nothing but superb service, I had service with AT&T. I ordered my sim off ebay for Cricket inserted it went through the setup and all is fine. only thing I can think of is your phone is not unlocked... Mine is carrier and boot loader unlocked and rooted, only problem I had was I couldn't send picture mess... spot where you add the APN type was blanked out, that was on stock 4.4.2 I just went with a modded version of 4.4.2 and all is fine... blows att out of the water full bars lte all the time, Hope you get it figured out.. sure glad I switched....
U really dont need a unlocked att phone to use on cricket
Locked att phones work fine too
Cricket runs on the att network and is owned by att
I switched my s4 from att to cricket without unlocking
The cricket salesman also said any att phone would work since its the same network
You must have a diferent issue
I use my att e980 on cricket at this moment
Bought it off ebay and very happy with it

No 4g at all !

Hello every one I just got new sealed op3 , the old phone was Htc one m9 plus , I used to get 4g connection everywhere .
Now after using op3 I never get 4g connection I only get H sign means 3g ! .
Here some info
I have the correct info for APN and the network is "zain jordan"
Same sim used to get 4g
My mobile model is A3000 , and software is oxygen 3.2.7 Android 6.0.1
I checked my mobile on gsmarena for the frequency and checked my operator frequency and they match (2100) should work !
I contact OnePlus fb page they didn't give me straight answer.
When I go to cellular network setting and search manually I only get 2g and 3g networks for the 3 operators in our country.
What's the problem and what can I do ?
The cellular customer service asked me a simple question , if you put the sim in another phone will you get 4g ?
I said yes
They said : your phone problem ...
Help please XDA
I wish I had an answer to your exact issue but I do not....
However I had a similar issue on US ATT. Put the sim in never got 4G/LTE only 3G and I went to ATT thinking a new sim would fix issue. It did not.
So I said what the hell, left the sim in and did a factory reset of the phone. When it came back up I have 4G to my surprise. Prior to that I changed APN, had ATT give me a custom APN and reset APN on their end....no luck. Factory reset did it and I did not want to do it since it would wipe my data....but finally doing it worked.
My $0.02
Are you with AT&T? If yes look online and you'll find guides and hope to get 4G.
Have you tried restarting your phone? It's stupid but I couldn't get 4G before I did.
As soon as I got my new OnePlus 3, I was not getting 4G in my region either. I had just the same problem as you.
First I got in contact with my carrier, but nothing they could do, as they said the problem was on my end.
After messing around a lot, with all possible network and APN configurations and not getting any results, I got in contact with OnePlus customer support, to no avail either, as they could not find any explanation if not for problems with my carrier.
And then, one of these days, no update or anything relevant at all, it just started showing the LTE icon. The phone did not receive any updates in the meantime, I did not change any connections settings, literally nothing on my end changed at all.
The problem just fixed itself it would appear.
I had the same Damn issue. Make sure the writing on your box's label is in English. I finally figured out I had the Asian version of the phone. Was nit compatible with usa 4g lte bands
Try entering:
*#*#4636#*#*
in the dialer. Go to Phone Information and make sure the preferred network type is set correctly.
When I received my OP3, it was originally set without LTE.
Guys the problem for me is my device model is a3000 and not supported by my carrier frequencies .
I didn't know about this and I must get a3003 .
So it's dead end . That's what OnePlus told me.

Where did you buy it from?
If you are not able to get it replaced by the seller, I am afraid that it will be curtains for 4G. No point in blaming OnePlus if you have not directly bought it from them.
Go to "SIM Cards" settings and Choose "Preferred SIM for Cellular Data" as your 4G SIM.
If your 4G is VOLTE, it should be selected as preferred Data Network in order to get network.

AT&T tech support said my OP7T not LTE Compatible

It's HD1907 T-MOBILE. What I need is HD1905. He sent me the wrong one.
I only realized a few hours ago I had no mobile data. I had got calls and texts to work this morning.
After spending 45 minutes on the phone with AT&T they concluded my phone is not recognized as LTE compatible. WTF? It's not even connecting to 3g.lb
I've been buying unlocked phones for years. My last phone was OP5T. I've never experienced anything like this.
I'll probably take it to the corporate store tomorrow but doubt it'll help. Has anyone had problems with AT&T and this phone?
I'm just putting it out there, hoping somebody has an idea...
AT&T worked for me, excellent data speeds, and great signal. But at times it would go from 4 bars to absolutely no signal or data, and lots of dropped calls. After that I went to Verizon, not as good of signal, slower data, but no dropped phone calls or mysterious total loss of signal in an area where it should have been 4 bars.

I'll bet if you look in the settings your model is HD1905 or the global model, not sure the number.
Actually if you could take a look for me and post back here that'd be good. It most likely won't make a difference but I'm curious.

Yes I have the HD1905, but you can totally forget about vowifi with any provider except for T-Mobile. I tried them all, I even had a tech from VZW work diligently to try and get vowifi working. I told him to try and add my IMEI to the approved list, and that did not work either. As far as AT&T, they did not give me the time of day, they just told me I needed and AT&T device, period.

You mean Verizon when you say VZW?
I'm just confused as to how he would be able to add it to the list of approved devices.
Anyway it's BS. If the carrier supports the phone, and the phone is capable of VOLT!/WIFI CALLING, it should work.

Yes Verizon. I have heard hear many times on this site, that phones are blocked from wifi calling by the IMEI, I or they could be wrong.
Vowifi works on the unlocked Pixel, but are they going to butt heads with Google? Volte works fine, I got a network extender, and I can use google voice to make calls over wifi if I really need to.
If vowifi is a must, get an approved phone, that is all you can do.

I worked at AT&T until a few months ago. I can tell you confidently that their tech support is a bunch of dummies. Employees have their own tech support line to call and that one is just as bad. They would routinely tell customers they needed to go to a store to have something done. Then they'd get to the store to find out we literally cannot do that at the store. Stuff like that was super common. One of them even bet me $1,000 that iPhones DON'T reboot when they update, which we all know is all the way wrong.
I halfway think support tells people that stuff on purpose to try to get them to buy something from AT&T. God, I could rant about that place for hours lol

Maybe you can answer this for me. Just because a T-MOBILE locked phone is able to make calls and texts on AT&T, does that automatically mean it should be able to connect to mobile data?
I was able to get it to make calls after a refresh signal was sent out, but it could not connect to mobile data . My sim is fine. I even popped it my son's Pixel 3a and LTE started immediately.
The seller is saying the fact that it was able to make calls means it is able to connect to mobile data. And I should take it to AT&T before returning it. I don't think he's scamming. He says he has the same phone on AT&T. And he's sold Hundreds of them. That kinda checks out based on reviews and some of those people do report it works with AT&T.
These phones are hd1907 T-Mobile but supposedly OnePlus unlocks them before sending them out to some sellers. I sort of believe the guy but is it true? If it were locked to T-Mobile could I get it to make phone calls?
Obviously I'm not talking about a hack. Because I thought locked was locked. Is it possible for a locked T-Mobile phone to make calls on the AT&T network?
Also I got AT&T to make it work but once I removed the sim/reinsert it, the thing displays weird behavior. Wifi goes in and out. It forgets the apn settings that were set prior.

I agree, ATT was the most horrible experience I ever had. Tracfone may have even had a better customer support.
Verizon CDMA service may be antiquated, but their customer service and tech support is 2nd to none.

It should have no trouble using data BUT you'll have to change the phone's APN settings to match your carrier before you can. You can google it and find them. It's not hard at all to change. Somewhere under the "network" settings.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but as I've understood it the phone will keep trying to access the previous carrier's data network, which is why you didn't have data. But as said above the APN settings should fix that.

If I told you the whole story, which started on Friday morning and in the end involved 7 AT&T employees, 6 on the phone and 1 in the store, it'd probably be removed because it's spam. Too long of a story.
But in the end it didn't get to connect to mobile data..at least not consistently. I took it to the store. The guy removed the Sim reset it, turned it off and boom! - LTE, calls and texts. His theory was it takes a little while for it to unlock and get set so when I tried it the other night it wasn't working.
I was happy because it literally took 5 minutes. I ran some errands and was out for like another 2 hours. Everything was working. Some point between the store and my driveway, the signal was gone. I never got it back. Of course I tried reset, remove Sim, reboot, change apn settings.
I called AT&T... the first woman didn't even know what CDMA and GSM was. I politely got her to transfer me to the guy who 'knows his stuff'. He got it to make calls again, but in the end concluded this device can't work on this network. I didn't wanna argue anymore. He had a BS answer for everything including 'If it doesn't work, why DID it work just a half hour ago?'
He said I could try getting a new sim. They have no idea. My son's sim won't work on this phone but pop it in my old phone and it works. And my sim works in his phone. It's not the sim. I know it.

I took it back to AT&T yesterday. There was someone in front of me so I sat down, removed the sim from my working phone, popped it in the op7t... instant lte, calls & texts. The same thing happened the day before I went to at&t. It worked perfectly well there in the store and even 2 towns away but not m my neighborhood which DOES connect to LTE, has for years on every phone we've had.
The tech (if you can really call him that) updated the sim. That got it done. I've had a working phone for 24 hours. BUT no LTE. It only connects to H+.
I haven't had time to call or go back to the store, but I'm hoping it's an easy fix. This has been the weirdest week I've ever had dealing with a phone. I've learned that AT&T doesn't know what they're doing. I still can't believe I needed to explain what GSM and CDMA was to one of the people on the call.
I'm gonna try a few things tonight after work.

Thanks for sharing, but I've never really needed to mess around with the settings as far as mobile data goes. It either works out of the box, or at most I'll need to put the apn in manually on some custom roms, but even that's rare.
How does the info you provided apply to my problem. I know the phone can connect to lte. It was connecting briefly on Monday afternoon and while I was at At&T yesterday, it connected before they updated the sim.
Is there something I can do with this? It's a sincere question. I'm not sure if I can apply it somehow. Thanks

I think his point was to show that the OP7T does in fact work on all AT&T bands. Normally you don't need to do anything with this if the SIM is provisioned correctly.
What are the chances that you are on the edge of the local AT&T LTE signal so it drops to H+ because that's a stronger connection? At the AT&T store the LTE signal is stronger so the phone is favoring that one. Some phones are more sensitive to signals than others (or more aggressive at switching to a stronger band).
Try using a program like "LTE Discovery" and see what bands you actually are connecting to. It can also let you know what is going on in your area with tower location.

I'll try that. Thanks.
That's what I said but the guy at the store said it's really not a stronger signal at the store. Plus I know I can get LTE at my house and in the store because all our other phones connect, even this one, briefly at the at&t store.
The seller have me a code to input into the dialer but I'm waiting for tomorrow to put it in. It's my day off. If something goes wrong it won't be a huge deal. I will look into what you sent at some point though.

Your posts are bouncing between VoLTE & VoWiFi.
LTE bands and VoLTE work fine on Verizon's network.
Verizon allows VoWiFi on the OP 8's that they sell. They will not activate VoWiFi on the OP 7 series, the claim is that the phone did not go through their security testing. IIRC VZW doesn't allow VoWiFi on any outside phone.
