I understand this has been brought up a lot, but, there has yet to be a definitive thread concerning Full Front Camera and WiMax driver development for implementation into ICS/Jellybean ROMs. I would like to begin this discussion with "Where do we start?" I understand the drivers would predominately have to be written from scratch, but, isn't how the drivers are written in Gingerbread AOSP versions significant and a place to start so that one could compare the kernel drivers in phones with similar specs? Where can this driver code be found? What phones have similar internals that we can compare their ICS/Jellybean drivers with our own? I am willing to put in the work and would like to find a couple more devs interested. IMO, the EVO 4g is a great phone. It is one of few that has so many feature you simply can't find on newer phone models (HDMI out, internal SD card expansion slot) Let's get down to it and get full functionality. It's possible. Teamwin did it with WiMax for Gingerbread AOSP and it can be done again here with FFC and WiMax (respectively) Questions? Comments? Who's in?
How many times is this going to be asked and answered before it stops coming up? It's not going to happen now or ever, period, end of story. The drivers didn't just slightly change between gb and ics they changed almost entirely. The drivers are proprietary software, ie. No public documentation exists to assist in rewriting new ones from scratch. Without HTC or qualcomm releasing them (never going to happen so don't hold your breath) there's nothing to be done. They aren't basic linux driver's the are entirely custom driver's written specifically for each piece of hardware. Even devices with similar specs have entirely different drivers. It's not impossible but no one is going to spend months and months writing proprietary drivers from scratch for a 3year old device. Use GB of you want FFC and WiMax or use ICS/JB and deal with them not working. Those are your only options.

Kinda like full frontal nudity huh? I actually worked on these drivers for a few months before I swapped to my s2 full time early last year. They just aren't gonna be scratch written by any less than a team of 4+ software engineers and at least a few months id guess 3+ after the 2.5 months I worked on em I only had em working about 25% I could trigger the hardware but no software interface would work and I couldn't find any publicly available documentation for the software or hardware to try and reverse engineer a workaround. I did manage to pull drivers for other devices with the same family of hardware for both GB and ICS and the GB drivers vs GB driver's for the 2 devices were entirely different and then the matching device drivers GB/ICS were entirely different again so they were useless as a reference. It's just not gonna happen unless htc or qualcomm release the drivers or the documentation on the hardware so they can be reverse engineered
I like to break stuff!
If I have enough time I may be able to reverse engineer a workaround

i think jelly bean is exciting, a massive speedup in terms of the UI, new notifications, new stuff in the play store. awesome speech stuff and new google search... and thats just what i can remember

That will never happen. The only way JB is hitting our phone is if we do it.
I'm really thinking of going back to a Google phone. Less of the features I really want, but at least the new toys hit it first and fast.
Oh and yea Galaxy S is getting it!! But Sammy will never push it to our phones, and you all know I'm right.
i think for the most part the new notification is by far what im after camera upgrade to
Offline voice actions will be a huge help to the utility and speed of voice commands. Other than that, meh. Of course I'm excited though, and will flash anything
I'm definitely waiting for the next Nexus for my next phone purchase. It's hard to not get caught up in the GS3 hype, but its such a minor upgrade to our phones' specs......the GS3 will be many, many months before it sees 4.1.
Hope Samsung port it to the S3 fast. So we can use it. I like it really much!

I'm guessing because most people wouldn't be toting a tablet around to take pictures of other things besides themselves. With my original galaxy tab, I was surprised how well the back camera did for video but it was too easy to cover the mic with your hand when in landscape mode. Also, the official portfolio case for it covered the rear camera and led.

A little OT but all the laptops that google is using during the google IO are Macs.... LOL
So I didn't have an android phone during the froyo to gingerbread update, which from my understanding is more like this than 2.3 to 4.0. I know we have had lots of trouble with kernel source and all sorts of other issues. Was this due to the fact that it was such a big difference, and so maybe this time it would be easier for our great devs to get this going for us once code drops? Obviously we can't know for sure until then and I'm not trying to offend anyone or seem greedy, I am just curious if this is how android works, or if not.
Thanks.
That is because google banned windows a long time ago from their offices.
So, can anybody think of any good reasons why we couldn't get the new voice search and Google Now on our phones now? I personally don't understand why we would need a new operating system for that. But, I really know nothing about what goes on behind the scenes with programming and development, so I could be totally wrong. What are your thoughts?
Am I the only one whom finds mostly all FF18 builds unresponsive at times? The touch keys don't work randomly... on the latest ota and the leak? Is this kernel related? I hope so.... I find myself constantly trying to find the right one buy no luck... this is perhaps a useless thread but I feel as if this ICS for phone is not even worth it at times

Who said anything about insurance? I'm very good friends with the store manager. He always performs a device exchange as long as it hasnt had water damage. And no, I'm pretty sure the issues I'm having are real as pressing the power button and having the unlock screen process done but captive buttons not work for 5 seconds or more, isn't a bad flash. Even on shubs one click to FF18.
Btw check list done.... settings are always left stock. Phone seems okay unless I can surgicly open it to check on internals lol... ! Yes I'm okay myself.other than my messed up fist from a drunk fist fight.
I've had the same issue with most ICS E4GT roms, and doubt it is anything user related. Don't pay attention to the trolls. I've fully wiped my phone and it made no difference. Hopefully someone can figure it out. It's pretty annoying having to turn the screen on a off twice to get the capacitive buttons working.

You can if you use the latest agat kernel built from source but remember not all developers have built in the new safe kernel! So you would always have to odin the kernel if it isnt baked with the ROM.

Ok heres my input. I believe that its a combination of software and hardware. Remember response time of soft buttons depends on how stable the rom is and also whats running at the time they where pressed. Ok say like you have a few apps it the background running and you turn off your screen. Once the screen come on the buttons may take a second to come on because the screen has more of a priorty than the soft button. Its all in how you look at it. And with apps running it slows that process down greatly because a combination of the proccesor and ram being used. Remember not notice but our soft buttons have a back light and they are press sensitive. So with them working together plus all the other stuff i explained timing would be off. But think about it. Lol is it really a depressing ordeal lol. I actually witness it and continue on without even thinking about it. Sorry for rambling lol
Now I'm not sure I'm posting this in the right section... If I am, I hope the administrators put it in the right place and don't remove it completely.
I recently gained access to a HTC Rezound that has a broken LCD screen. Everything else, to my knowledge, is fully functional. I took the speaker from the Rezound and put it in my Droid Incredible 2 because mine was broken. It worked fine. I was curious to see if I could replace anything else that could possibly improve my Incredible. I took a look at the cameras. I know that the Rezound can shoot a maximum of 1080p, while the Incredible cannot. I wondered if there was any way I could switch the cameras.
The Rezound camera seemed to fit perfectly fine inside the Incredible 2 motherboard, but I know that the ribbon cables are probably different. Like I expected, my phone didn't recognize the camera. (I am running CM7.2, by the way) So, I downloaded a Gingerbread ROM for the Rezound and then Cyanogenmod 7.2 for the Incredible 2 and tried replacing the CM7 camera apk with the Rezound's and flashing the zip. The camera didn't even show up when I tried that.
That's why I'm here... If there is anyone who knows anything about the scripts of this camera, or if it's even possible to do this, please respond as soon as possible. Thanks guys!

It would be a huge undertaking, require driver and kernel work, scripting work, building of your own ROM. As far as the hardware, who knows, it might even require soldering. Long story short, it's not worth it, the Rezound has basically the same camera with an improved f/2.2 lens. Not to mention part of its ability to shoot 1080p you mentioned comes from the dual core S3 it has to process the data.
Just for future reference, this should go in the Q&A section. The development section is only for roms, kernels, tweaks, recoveries, bootloaders and things like that. Basically, if the OP doesn't have a download link then it probably doesn't belong here (with a few exceptions.)

OK so I have had my evo for about two years now and when I first got it I rooted it. then a while later ics came out and so did ics roms for the evo. but every time a rom would be stable enough for daily use there would be no more updates for it. even though there would still be bugs with it and it continues to be like that. so i mean whats up with that. would it be that its just not worth it to work on it or the devs don't have time? I just want to know out of curiosity.

From what I've read, I don't think the evo hardware can handle many of the features that came with the phone. I'm assuming that is what you are talking about though (4g, ffc, etc).
The problem is, HTC no longer supports the OG EVO. The source for drivers for things like 4G and the FFC were never officially released, so this is why those items in ICS and JB ROM's don't work. If you want a fully-functional ROM, stick with a Gingerbread ROM. Everything works-period.

I also see this a lot too. I wish I knew how to develop so I could make a driver that works for the front facing camera. That is the only thing holding me back from ics and i want it so bad. I think what happens is the dev gets a new phone and wants to work on the newer one, which there is nothing wrong with.

Yeah I want to know how to develop also. I've been working on learning coding and what not. Like the basic stuff haha
The ffc needs a proprietary driver. The one that works on GB can't even be modified to work on ICS(easily) it needs to be about 90% rewritten to function. Writing one from scratch would almost be easier and its not easy and extremely time consuming without a team of devs experienced in coding camera drivers.
We are legion, for we are many.

Exactly, that's why sense 4.0 roms on the Evo 3d dont having working 4g or 3d because htc abandoned the evo 3d and are focused on the evo 4g lte. You can get an evo 3d a lot cheaper than a 4g lte. It is a damn shame I know, believe me.

You can flash it. If you want to lose your radio. Unfortunately even if the 7100 rom does not include radio we have significant differences in our hardware that causes the radio not to work. Most likely something in the ril or kernel I believe (I could be wrong about the reasons). We dont have an AOSP kernel for the 7105 or tmo version.
Thank you sir... man, I really want that ROM. Was using XquiziT's ROM but the was having a couple problems with it and now the future for it looks bleak. (What I liked so much was the AOSP parts added in) Going to give Saurom a go now I guess.

Haha remember when "VIIRU§" tried to get donations to shake us down for a new computer? Now he's been AWOL for a week. And people got mad at me for being dubious about him :-/

Boy i sure hope we get a aosp rom like that. Why is their development so far ahead of us?
The international variant always gets devs quicker than us variants. you gotta realize its available to more people than the us variant. but we will catch up dont worry

I am TRUSTING you!!! Don't let me down.... LOL (Ref: "..but we will catch up..")
we need some devs solely working on what needs to be done for porting from one device to another. the fact that the ROM even functions on our device without modification should be a decent indicator of how close we are.
look in the US SGS3 section, 4 variants all with small differences and porting roms between those 4 is a piece of cake.
if someone could make a stand alone CWM.zip that we flash after a N7100 ROM that gave us back the radio it would be perfect. then we could just run any N7100 rom we wanted, no porting needed.

well as much as i love the note 2 if we don't get any aosp love soon ill probably swap devices with my wife. at least her sg3 has cm10/aokp. again not complaining, i just hope development picks up. i was thinking about getting a nexus 4 to tide me over but i hate lg. if anything i still hope the note 2 see's android 4.2.
I am curious. I have had CM/AOKP for years with my other phones. With this one seems a lot of the features I really love are here. What do you feel is missing from TW that AOKP/CM gives you. I am not a fan of TW colors but overall it is good (and I xan theme colors away). Only thing I really miss from AOKP is the wigets popup from nav bar.
Aosp is lighter and for me runs better.

I would agree on most older phones....this one I have not had any slowdowns. ....that I did not cause (changing files in system causes FCs sometimes lol)
Im not saying options are bad or that I would not flash AOSP but just wondering why people feel they need it.

Personally I really look forward to having a ROM with mass storage support. Since Google removed it from Android, I am no longer able to connect my phone to Linux for easy transfer of files and have to use all kinds of alternatives.
Not sure it can't be done on a TW based ROM, but CM/AOKP ROMs seem to more commonly introduce it like the one mentioned in this thread.

I second the motion for USB mass storage functions. Maybe wi-fi direct or other technology will supersede it, but it would be nice to have the capabilities meantime.

This I can understand I really wish google made ums/mass storage an option. I understand why they went with ums but options are always nice.
Reasons why I think they went UMS
1) ability to keep sdcard mounted while connected to computer
2) ability to mount /sdcard on /data/media making the internal sdcard the same as the internal data memory
3) most people people use windows
4) the option to turn it on/off may confise some people.
The only one I disagree with is number 4. Stupidd people will find a way to be stupid no matter how much you coddle them.
