[Q] Need help with undervolting - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello, I was wondering if someone could help me undervolt my Samsung Galaxy S3 4G LTE running on Cyanogenmod 10.1.

You need to install a kernel that allows for undervolting, such as KT747.

Do you know if Cyanogenmod will allow you to undervolt in the future? Is there some way I can undervolt WITHOUT uninstalling Cyanogenmod?

I have no idea of CM's plans, but you can UV with any ROM as it is dependent on your kernel.

Install the kt747 kernel and after you do that you'll have an app in your app drawer called ktweaker. Go into that and under volt away.

If you are sure to DL the 4.2.1 JB version, yes it should work. I say should as I don't use CM and can't be certain you won't run into issues.
As for the explanation of a kernel, I think you should do some reading up before flashing them without proper knowledge. This link is worth reading and bookmarking for later use.

Read, read, read if you're still not sure read some more the kind folks here at XDA have vast amounts of knowledge and I can guarantee you that you'll find Answers to most if not all of you're answers.

Friendly advise:
As it has been mentioned before, you should really read more on what you're about to do here. UV can make your phone unstable and if you don't know what you're doing at the first place and/or how to recover from a unstable state, you'll have a paperweight in your hands.
Please use the search button, read and learn more on what you want to do.

After installing the kernel, do I need to update the kernel when I update cm 10.1? And how do I "fix permissions"?

Fix permissions by going into advanced in clockworkrecovery, should be the last option. Don't know about your other question but you can check what kernel your running by going into settings--->about.

Every time you reinstall or update your ROM you need to reinstall your kernel of choice. This is because the ROM will have its own kernel that overwrites the one you install.
To fix permissions, you need to boot into recovery. From there it depends on your recovery software. In TWRP, you select "Advanced" and then "Fix Permissions", swipe to confirm and reboot. I forget where it is in CWM but poke around a little bit and you should be able to locate it.

[Q] I'm Novice and need some help with BeastMOD 4.0

Hello Everyone,
I'm novice and received my SGSII last week. I was able to rooted with odin method. After reading review on this forum, i want to update my ROM to BeastMod 4.0 and kernel to Faux .006 but bit worried about the method.
Can someone who has above combination flash on their T-mobile SGSII phone can help me to correct steps.
My main concerns are:
1. When i flash BeastMod 4.0 ROM will it also flash synergy kernel? If yes, then how can i reflash only kernel because i want to use Faux .006 kernel.
2. If i do step#1, hoping it will wipe out all the default T-mobile factory apps, what is the best way to save all the apps and needed informations.
It might sound stupid questions but I wanted to be on safer side and dont want to crew my phone.
Thanks in advance.
Use titanium backup to backup apps+data. You can YouTube a tutorial or read around the forums here for a guide. Then boot into cwm and do a nandroid backup. Then you're ready to flash.
1. Wipe data, cache
2. Flash the ROM
3. Flash the kernel you want
4. Wipe dalvik cache, fix permissions
5. Reboot, let it sit for 10 mins
6. Reboot.
7. restore data+apps from titanium
There are better guides out there, this is more of a quick overview.

I always do the boot routine before flashing a new kernel. I think I remember reading that somewhere and ive done it ever since. Also when wiping in clockwork mod I like to format system to ensure a 100% clean flash. You could private message me if you have any questions!

I would recommend becoming very familiar with booting into cwm by the 3 button combo. This could be really important not bashing rom manager but I used to use it and when running into problems with my vibrant I found the. Button combo to boot recovery was a much better way and u also control everything u do that way ... just a heads up

I take a slightly "cleaner" approach to wiping, but similar. One thing that's missing is the "system" partition from your steps. Which is under the "Mounts and Storage" option.
I recommend wiping the "/system", "/cache" and "/data" partitions in there. (I always do each twice, to ensure full wipage)

Not really a true "backup", but it'll work.
Just hit "backup" and it'll tell you where it's going.

I thought flashing rom will wipe out everything installed on the phone currently? If that is true then how TI will able to restore data+apps.?

Before you wipe everything you use titanium to backup all your apps and data. it stores it all on your internal storage (by default I believe). After you flash the ROM, you use titanium which will auto detect the backup and allow you to restore everything.
Edit: the wipe doesn't delete the internal storage. At least when I wipe it doesn't. I'm still a noob at this stuff too

Correct.
Just be sure to backup and it doesn't matter if you screw something up or not (and by backup I mean a backup in CWM as well as Titanium) I don't even bother with Titanium.

You think BeastMod with Synergy Kernel and Juggernaut with fauxs new kernel are good combination?
On Juggernaut development thread people complaint many issue compare to BeastMod, offcourse its also new compare to Juggernaut. But i really like fauxs new kernel and dying to flash on my phone.
I haven't seen any incompatibility between BeastMod + Fauxz new kernel combination and its working flawless unless you have discovered or someone found some issue.

uninstall custom kernel

i'm planning on installing GLaDOS kernel today, and i'm currently running codename android.
if anything goes wrong, or i want to switch to another, how do i go back to the stock kernel.
Also, does a CWMR backup backup the custom kernel as well?
yes, the CWMR backups everything, including the kernel, so that would be your best bet
oh okay. so i could do a backup before i flash the kernel, and then if anything goes wrong, just restore that backup. correct?

Correct or to go even farther you can just restore that kernel only. In that advanced section on the restore menu, restore boot.img

very awesome. thanks!
Great posts guys!
Question, is it best to reset the kernel every time change you change it? I've had some issues with kernels and this may be the problem.
I feel like in theory there's bits and pieces of things in there that I need to clean. Haha. What's the best way to do that?
Thanks in advance.

I would check /system/etc/init.d; If there are any scripts from previous kernel there, delete them through adb or prefered method.
Also, in that folder, you may find other scripts, for example voltage settings @boot from 3rd party apps like setcpu, you should also remove those (if you use them at all)
You're asking about when changing custom kernels, right? When I switch kernels, I don't reflash stock kernel first. I just flash one custom kernel on top overwriting the installed one.
Oh ok thanks man.
I've only ever set min and max cpu stuff. Never any voltage settings. So I van probably go over with no worries yeah?
So you know what the build number is for stock kernel on 4.0.3?
Thanks again man.

sorry, setting min/max cpu freq at boot time also places a script in /system/etc/init.d/, so I'd look out for those as well, forgot to specify those, as they may also cause conflicts with your current rom/next kernel. as always, you can open those scripts in a text editor and see what they're doing or will do on boot.
not sure on the release version/numbers though..my guess is that the easiest way is to repo sync 4.0.3 tag from aosp, that will have stock kernel version planned for that release.
Can someone post a CWM flashable file of the 4.0.2 kernel please.

Nope. I downloaded a fresh ROM and wiped everything, then flashed.
Odd. Strange that you have the same issue with 4 different ROMS. Because of this It sounds like there is something inherently wrong with the hardware or, even more oddly, an issue with all 4 ROMs which the only thing I can think of is that you have downloaded incorrect versions for your phone (sorry to sound like I'm insulting your intelligence but that's all I can think of)
The only think linking the errors across all the roms would be something which they all share, in this case imcompatable software.

It's basically a .zip file that when you flash like other ROM or kernel, just erases everything. Simple as that. It'll erase current ROM, current kernel, files in /sdcard/, cache, dalvik, hack, all the files in the phone. It'll just leave you with a new playground for you to play on.
It might be a "overkill" for this kinda problem, but since nothing helped, I say try this.

1. Download ROM of your choice
2. Place it in the same directory as adb.exe

Huh? What is siyah 5.0b2???
I did a manual "format /system" from Clock Work Recovery, fixed it for me, Seems the Wipe/Factory reset does not reset the system partition correctly for some strange reason.
This was an issue after a custom kernel.

Wipe/Factory reset does not touch the system partition at all. This is normal. It only wipes the userdata partition.

Had a bad download and on initial install I formatted system however it failed. Went back and formatted system and cache manually and worked for me.
I'm not sure if this is related, but I read in the MMuzzy's Jelly Bean 4.2.1 thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762846, first post specifically) that unmounting /system fixes this problem, and sure enough it solved the problem for me when I tried to flash that ROM.

Installing multiple kernels?

I currently have Faux123's flo jb 4.3 kernel installed. I want to install ElementalX onto my device. Will I have to uninstall Faux's kernel to get Elemental, or does it not matter?
If I have to uninstall Faux, how would I go about doing that?

I am not 100% familiar with the Nexus 7 yet, whereas with my SIII and HTC Desire. Normally every phone support only 1 kernel and once you flash a different one it will basically overwrite the old kernel.

Ok cool. I guess ill just do a quick backup and then flash the new kernel. One more question; Does it matter where you download the .zip kernel in the first place? Or does it always have to be flashed in /sdcard

As I mentioned, I do not have 100% knowledge yet on the Nexus device, hence I am reluctant to give you any advice that might brick your tablet. Maybe someone that did it already could answer your question more precise. I guess there should be also some guide in the kernel thread or not?

Download Kernel, use root explorer to browse to SD card/downloads, long press the .zip file you downloaded, select move from popup window, near top left select parent folder this should be the root of SD card, from top right side of window select move here. .zip will now show here. Boot into twrp select wipe, select advanced wipe
Important Wipe cache and dalvik cache ONLY. Wipe only cache and dalvik cache. Wipe only cache and dalvik cache. Important
Click back button after wipe to get back to install button select install, browse down to .zip file you downloaded. Install it. the kernel your talking about has an aroma installer so there will be many selectible options. Select what you want as options. Wipe cache and dalvik cache again once aroma installer is complete. Press reboot. Done

my HTC Desire is sleeping at the moment due to my SIII , whereas I am keeping it for e.g. situations where I do not want to use the SIII due to risk, damage or whatever. Once such a situation appears I guess I will update to a newer version .
