Kindle 10.2.3 root/modding

So for the last 7 hours i've been researching how to root/ install JB or another rom onto this brand new kindle i have running 10.2.3.
I've got ADB running and i've tried Sparkym3 and a few other root methods and i keep getting permission denied when i go to write fbmode or su
SO i'm at a loss, i'd really like to get this installed and working for my handicapped father's new kindle, its his xmas gift, and i know i'd prefer he be able to use google play and stuff.
Any help would be fantastic, this is really rattling my brain.

I just want a work around to be able to get google play, and how is this the wrong thread? I have a kindle fire...and a question lol

The information in this forum is for the 1st gen. Kindle Fire. To avoid having the methods here be misleading to anyone seeking help with their devices. That doesn't take away from the fact that someone was still willing to point you in the right direction for your device specificly. This is to prevent confusion for all involved and what you need is not in this forum.

And also the fact that following any of the guides in this forum could possible HARD-BRICK your 2gen kindle fire. Consider yourself warned

Best walkthrough to ICS/JB from root to install?

hi folks. I just bought a used Kindle Fire and want to get ICS or JB on it. It has had nothing done yet. Can someone give me a link to the best/latest walkthrough to do this? There are so many out there it seems and I dont know which to use or where to start. thanks.

Yes it is first gen with 6.3 on it. I was told that indicates that it is a first gen. Thanks though.

Developers

Is there anyone developing for the Kindle Fire 2?
As far as I can see, the answer is no but I'm not sure if you're all just been busy and work and don't have much to post yet.
If there is no dev team(s), or devs at all working towards getting this thing with a working Recovery and ROM, I will most likely put together a team this weekend.
Also, assuming there are devs, may you share any findings you have? Why or why not the recovery is being a difficult process and whatnot.
I will probably put together a team just in case, I just can't make promises until I meet this weekend and see if they want to work on this.
If/when i get a team I will make a thread for it and post any news updates as they happen. I really hope we can all get this thing cracked open soon!

UPDATE!:
I hit reply instead of save, so I lost my post sadly, so bullet points!
-I could not contact the main dev.
-I do not plan on making a full dev team anytime soon.
-Powerpoint45 and Hashcode are making progress, moreso Powerpoint, although eventually it seems Hashcode plans to have a workaround, just no ETA or promises from him, but there is more hope than before!
-I will still help and try and offer advice to any newer people, I am not a dev, but I have a decent amount of experience that would be enough to help new people.

I too would like to know this. I don't have much but I would donate what I can to the first dev or team to get us past this locked bootloader.

Thanks I'll let you all know what gets decided this weekend. One coder agreed so far but their experience with Android is limited. The main person I have yet to talk to but he is the one that constantly messes with his android devices since android first came out. The issue is that he does not have a kindle fire, so I may have to buy them ones or lend mine to them to get the coding started.

I have been flashing ROMs and whatnot for a couple years, done my vibrant, galaxy s2, and a few others, but have no coding or developing skills whatsoever. I imagine everyone starts somewhere but I don't have the slightest idea where to begin. I would love to learn though. A locked bootloader seems like a steep challenge compared to obtaining root or developing a ROM. I might be wrong in that regard too.

Depends on how the bootloader is signed. The Motorola Droid and Droid X were relatively easy to crack but other devices may never be cracked without help from the manufacturer.

Since this device already has Root, I don't know that the bootloader will be an issue. The Gen 1 Kindle Fire has JellyBean running on it already so it may be a (somewhat) simple task to port that to the Gen 2. I'll have to pull it and see what may be device specific to get things running on the Gen 2, but it can be done. We'll need to first get a custom recovery going to allow the ROM to install.
This looks promising from the Gen 1 forum. Perhaps someone can reach out to the dev and see 1) if he's ok with us using it and 2) if he can help get it going on the Gen 2.

A locked bootloader generally means no custom kernels. Kexec is the only workaround (that I know of) other than unlocking, to start a new kernel . Root simply gives su access, it can't, in and of itself provide kernel customization.

Didn't the recovery for the KFHD's get put on hold? The stock recoveries won't usually let you flash anything that's not signed.
I'm not a dev but it seems like porting the KF1 ROM over to the KF2 should be pretty easy. Other than the bootloader, the hardware changes were minor, just bumping the CPU/GPU up one model and doubling the RAM. Again, it all hinges on unlocking the bootloader or reverse engineering the key it's signed with. Anybody have access to Amazon's EC2 system?

I just toured google today and made a new friend. He doesn't work on the android side, and that building is the most secure on the campus (That and the google+ are the only buildings regular employees can't enter fully without special permissions)
I am hoping he can introduce me to people on the android side of things and see if they would be willing to offer any insight that wouldn't involve an NDA heh.

This is true, however the question was around custom ROMS, not kernels. You do not need a custom kernel to run a custom ROM, it's just nice to have the flexability.

Has anyone tried a Kindle fire HD rom? I think the specs are identical except for the screen. I'll do a little research and see what I can do. I would like to see otg working on my son's 2nd generation fire. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD

That's not quite how it works. I would also recommend to NOT TRY ANYTHING ON THE OTHER KINDLE FORUMS. If you check here, people have posted what works. I believe there is one guide for the basic rooting, and another for the steps on using root to make your Kindle do some decent stuff (new launchers, lockscreens, marketplace, all the good stuff!)
However, the issue with the KF2 is not really getting ROMs on, it's the step before it which is getting a working recovery so we can safely flash ROMs onto the device. Once that's done it shouldn't be hard to get a ROM, and it may be even possible to just use a KFHD ROM without any issues, BUT we need the recovery on here first, and getting around the locked bootloader.
To my all caps warning, just check the Q & A forums to see all the people who tried the recovery, rom, and rooting methods for their KF2. Most end up bricked.
If you are experienced in the sort of thing, go ahead and try at your own risk, just be careful. I burnt out my usb port trying to make a fastboot cable. I tied the wrong pin in... I'm waiting on my replacement. I'm going to try to use the revrom to get the cwm on my kf2 if that works, I'm sure we could get someone to make a touch cwm or twrp for the kfhd. If the kfhd cwm works, we could use the touch cwm/twrp. Perhaps it will need to be modified... perhaps not. I suspect that the cwm won't work perfectly and we need to modify it to use the correct partition table.
I should mention that using my current factory cable, I can get to fastboot. I just burnt out the data pin. I tried to use dd to flash the revboot stuff, but I forgot to do the part where you get past the locked bootloader... instabrick

I was trying to make a fb cable earlier today but the connectors were too hard to solder so I need a new cable to work with. I had same idea as u. Trying to boot into a recovery like cwm

[Q] HardBricked HD 8.9??

Is it possible I hard bricked my hd 8.9? I used kffa to flash the 7.3 img but then flashed a 7.2.3 bootloader. They were both for the 8.9 but is that possible to still hard brick it? Or is it possibly a dead battery?

You know, we can go back and forth like this forever, but I doubt we will get anywhere unless you start to provide some usable information. No one here can see your device so the help you receive is dependent on what you tell us about the situation.
So far, it has been established that you used the KFFA to flash some image and the 7.2.3 bootloader, and as a result of this, your device is stuck in fastboot. Based on this information, I can tell you that your battery is probably not dead.
With that being said, considering the fact that you posted this question in the 8.9" KFHD forum, yet made it clear that you flashed the 7.2.3 bootloader (7" KFHD), I'm a little concerned. Perhaps you should clarify before things get worse for you.
Also, you claim to be a "noob at this", but that in itself doesn't help very much. There are varying degrees of "noobs" that visit this site, and it can easily be argued by some that even I fall into that category. Perhaps instead of using a general statement to explain what you don't know, it might be best to to explain what you do know and understand, so no one here has to make assumptions about your current level of experience.
Other helpful information would be...exactly what you were doing and why you were doing it that brought you to this situation in the first place. What have you done to try and resolve this problem on your own? What problems have you run into as a result? The more information you are able to provide about your situation, the easier it will be for others to provide the appropriate guidance so you can fix your device (on your own) in a timely and efficient manner.

Ok I had uninstalled something that I shouldn't have so I downloaded the KFFA and tried flashing the system and the recovery and I read that I also had to flash the bootloader as well so I went on goo.im and downloaded one that I found on hashcodes profile for the Kindle Fire HD. Judging from what you said about 7.2.3 being for the 7" worries me. I thought that all of hashcodes items in that particular section were for the 8.9" . It would boot into fastboot just fine until I flashed that one and now it is just a black screen and won't power on for anything. I'm a rookie rooter at this. I was able to root and install 2nd bootloader on my original Kindle Fire 2nd gen. I've been able to root my xperia tl lt30at. I've been able to root my razr m xt907 as well as unlock the bootloader and install custom roms. I'm a noob when it comes to adb and fastboot and coding etc. I hope that helps.

Now that paints a more realistic picture of what's going on.
Unfortunately, you made a fatal mistake when installing a HFDH7 bootloader onto a KFHD8.9. There is a discussion in the KF2 Help & Troubleshooting forum about getting direct access to the eMMC and re-flashing the appropriate partition images to restore devices such as yours, but it's still a work in progress and there is very little information on it regarding other devices. At this point, it may be your only hope.

Kindle Default SW

Sorry for the double post....posted this earlier today with no hits.
Hello all. Glad to have found this forum. Been here for a short time and from the looks of it, I am in the right place.
Have a Kindle Fire 2nd Gen and was looking to flip it to Android OS.
Problem - My Kindle did an OTA software update and from reading the forum doesn't look like I will be able to go back to an older version which means I am stuck with the simple Android 2.(something).
As this forum has a wealth of information I know I have not read every tread......
Any advice on converting to Android 4.(something)?
My Kindle Fire has SW Version 10.4.8

You need to root, and install Twrp recovery, then you can install custom roms.

I was reading on a different part of the forum that if I root it the way it stands (w/ SW 10.4.8) I would brick it. The warning was pretty certain because with this SW build it closes all the "holes" - so to speak.
Unless there has been some new development.

You misunderstand q5. You can root 10.4.8
If you want to install the second bootloader and twrp you'll have to downgrade the bootloader. .. But root is fine

I guess the next question would be has anyone successfully converted 10.4.8 to Android?
If so, what are the steps. I can find steps for an older SW version but not 10.4.8.

Yes. I have. Follow these instructions:

You'll see that part of the instructions will downgrade the bootloader. I greatly recommends that you have a fastboot cable available since this is a notoriously tricky device. Hit me up on Pm if you need more detailed assistance.
