Is it working? mine doesn't return any results.
mine neither!
Its defo broke!
yep, no more searching here either...
I think I broke it, I did a search for "install Vista on Pocket PC" then it stopped working...
Not to worry I found what I was looking for.
Thanks.
yep, very few results when searching. not very useful that way :-/
Any prevision when it will be fixed??
Yes, I just did a search and it only returned results going back to Feb. 11. It is a topic that has definitely been discussed prior to that. Guess I'll wait and hope it gets fixed.

i sent this to the feedback form on the site many moons ago, but apparently nobody has taken notice.
Has anyone else noticed this??
If you are not logged in,
The quick search (click search so the box comes up with "show threads", "show posts", and advanced search options) is pointless.
If you try top search with it, you will alwasy receive an error. Because you have to answer the no spam question via the advanced search page. Whats the point of having the quick search in this case?
I propose the admin either gets rid of quick search (have it go right to advanced search), OR add a box in the quick search for the spam question .. for guests that aren't logged in.
I know it has frustrated me more than once!!
thanks for listening
Hi Guys,
We switched the search function on 12-02 as posted in news.
Could you give me some feedback on if this improved the search or not?
Concerning the nospam issue it should only be an issue for unregistered or not logged in users, if you have problems as a logged in user please let me know asap.
Greetz,
Flar
as just posted in the thread in news: search has been switched back too fulltext boolean which is what we we're using before, we're looking into other alternatives..
Greetz,
Flar
Ahh, great, thkx a lot for fixing it
Thanks for switching it back. It's much easier to find things again.
Ditto to the two opinions above me.
My opinion on other search options:
I frequently also use google site search to find posts on XDA.... I find it works very well for me (so well I have set up a keyword shortcut in firefox. All I hvae to do is type "xda " and the terms i am looking for in the address bar, and hit enter.)
this is what i used to type into the google box when I did it manually:
site:forum.xda-developers.com the keywords your looking for
This is especially true when I am looking for terms less than 3 characters, the normal search won't work.
Maybe you guys should consider offering direct access to a google site search in addition to the boolean?
(( An example is how Webmasterworld does it. They go two steps further with a yahoo and MSN. In fact, 3rd party is their only search system:
http://www.webmasterworld.com/searchform.cgi
))
well the forum search was working good for me yesterday..and today all i get is the Google search "Search XDA-Developers using Google" choice.. i like the older forum search..
am i doing something wrong?
ha! I thought they would use my suggestion in addition to, and not in place of, the normal search.
But just to confirm w/ the poster above me .. yes it seems that is the only search option now, your not doing anything wrong.
I dont mind using google search, in general it can find topics on here pretty good, but it has limitations.
For example, if the site search is turned off, you cant search individual threads. Some threads on here get VERY big, and without the "search this thread" function there are going to be plenty of questions asked and answered multiple times in each thread, which leads to annoyed people saying the question has already been answered, etc.
With that said, I really do hope the site search does come back for this reason.
i concur for the same reasons. +1 vote for that
i email HTC to ask if the voice to text feature was disabled on the Sim Free version of the Desire and this is the response i got....
Thank you for your enquiry about voice to text.
Well the device does have voice to search via Google, so it should do. The only thing is you'll probably have to install some apps from market on the Device, hope this helps..

So any one with the desire ATM does the above work? (i.e voice to search) i find the answer vague so i have asked for a yes or no answer to the question i asked. i quoted the desirehtc website where it states this feature will be available.
if anyone else has emailed HTC on this subject i would be interested in the response you got.
UPDATE
HTC have now resopnded with a Simple "NO" you will have to use a 3d party App.
no voice search here.
cos it's using the HTC IME, it is missing the microphone key that you get on the Android keyboard to use the voice to text functions.
whoever answered that at HTC obviously didn't have one to hand to check and was probably looking at the nexus....
Afternoon all,
After enabling the 'Voice to Text' as shown on How To Enable Voice To Text using one of the links on page 2 I have now got Google search by voice working on a T-Mobile Desire.
You don't have to change over to using the android keyboard if you don't want to use the main voice to text functionality, but now pressing and holding the search button brings up a pop-up on screen with 'Speak Now - Google Search' and a microphone symbol.
Seems to work fine to me.
works fine for me too.
Maybe it's coming in another update, this is from the htc website desirehtc dot com
" Android 2.1...
What's that all about then?
Launched in January 2010, and known in the trade as Eclair, this is basically an update to the operating system. In laymans terms, it's a sexier looking interface. But it's not quite that simple.
Now, for example, your Wallpapers can be animated, injecting your screen with a new lease of life. This works particularly well with the AMOLED screen.
Rather excitingly, it brings us into a realm where voice-to-text is a reality in all text fields. Imagine sending texts or emails simply by talking to your phone. Now do it, we're there. "
I'm sorry but voice search has always been there...

Here it is, tried and tested.
1. goto settings
2. goto text to speech and install voice data
3. goto http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UQC37DJC on your desire
5. download it
6. install it (you may get a prompt saying that you need to change your settings to allow it to install, so do so)
7. next in settings again goto language & keyboard
8. tick android keyboard
9. click android keyboard settings
10. make sure voice input is ticked.
11. go into messages and hold down on TAP TO COMPOSE
12. select input method
13. then select android keyboard
14. click the mic and start talking

Cheers mate... great help, 1 more reason 2 love Desire...
Back to my orignal post.....
HTC tell me the voice - search is available by default (i.e not installing any other SW) they say it has to be enabled in settings then it work when using the search key/menu?
any one confirm this?
Actually, I also got a similar answer from HTC. I'm from Singapore though. Thus, most likely it is an unlocked version. My question was:
"Does the HTC Desire support the speech-to-text function out of the box? Does it also support AVI files? Thank You."
This is what i got.
"Thanks for contacting HTC.
For HTC Desire, it does have the function for Speech-to-text, but it doesn't support AVI file.
Thank you for your continuous support of our products and services. Should you require further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
We look forward to be of service to you again."
From this reply, it seems obvious what the answer is. But the truth, from those who already got the phone, are far from it. I had specifically said out of the box. But, as told by owners, you need to download apps and everything for this function. Just FYI, I do not own the Desire...yet XD
HTC says NO! to voice enabled in default.
i must be very unlucky but everytime i use the search i got this message:
Sorry, search is temporarily unavailable. Please try again in 10 minutes.
and i gonna sound stupid but where is the seach button within the thread.
because looking an information in a 100+ page thread is not so easy without search
if i cant find it then i guesss a lot of people and newbies won't, then you cant expect people to search before they posts
I dont see any announcements regarding the search feature being disabled, but it'd be my best guess that either there is some sort of maintenance going on, they may have disabled the search temporarily (it is a huge bandwidth killer), or least likely....a software error.
Either way, I am sure someone is aware......I'd just be patient.
(fwiw, I need the search feature too....but I can live with what I need the answer for....and I don't want to use any other forum but this one)
IIRC it's when the servers are getting overloaded, the search automatically gets disabled. This ensures the rest of the site doesn't go down.
If not, it might just be maintenance...
The google search will still be operational unless google goes down

I've not noticed the "search this thread" button being unavailable before. Maybe you've had a different experience to me. On both the new and classic styles there's a "search this thread" button at the top of the first post on the page you're viewing. If it's not there for you then I bow out and leave it to someone who knows why to give you a better answer.
I have been trying to track down some issues i have been having with Google Now on Jelly Bean, and I have realized there are a few different versions of teh google search apk, (sometimes labled velvet.apk) in the wild.
2.0.0.398337 2.0.0.392829 and v2.0.0.402395 all exist at a minumum.
With the latest AOKP AUG25 build containing the lowest of the three at 2.0.0.392829 i am curious what other versions there are.
A few tests can be done that will hopefully help me to narrow down the issues at hand. Under Settings>Privacy and Accounts, there should be an option that allows you to use google.com for search instead of local domain, but this option does not exist on my build. I think that this may be why my gNow does not work as well as some other individuals.
For instance,
When I ask google "How tall is Kobe Bryant?" a voice response returns "Kobe Bryant is 6 foot 6 inches tall" ...
When I ask google "How tall is the Eiffel Tower?" it simple shows the results in google, with no card, but if i ask "What is the height of the Eiffel Tower? the voice response is given. It has been verified by others using the higher versions of google search that asking "how tall is" works just fine on their end.
Additionally, (and this may be across the board for all instances of GNOW) when i try to use the offline feature the only ability gnow has is to make a phone call. One would assume that being able to create alarms, and send text would still be available.
If anyone can help shed some light onto this issue please comment below. Also i have linked to the gnexus guide for google now for function reference.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1740542
It may just be that we need to pull the google search apk from the nexus and load it onto our phone (running a JB based rom of course)
I would like to further expand on this. I used to say 44th president or 43 president etc, and it would say george Bush, Barak, etc... But now it only shows the text answer. Did google change something or what?

If i ask "41st president" i get a text response. IF i ask "Who was the 41st president" I get a spoke answer. This remains true until the 16th president. From that point and lower all answers are text based.
Something foul is definitely afoot here.
I noticed the same thing. Asking what's the weather on the Nexus gives weather then says "here's the forecast for the week" unlike on our GS2
this truly may be in the wrong thread, but i put it here because i thought it was an issue with our rom...I wonder if i can report my own thead.
Can we just pull the apk from a nexus 7? Lol

Hopefully people can start uploading there google seach version and we can start to compare them to find out which versions have which options.
Is there some user preference that will allow me to disable the predictions/suggestions drop-down which invariably hijacks my search and takes me everywhere except "this thread"? I know about the "x" button, I just want to disable this useless (to me) behavior.
Also, how does one search a thread for "this string" without returning every occurrence of "this" or "string"?
Sorry if I missed something obvious, but this has been plaguing me for years.
Thanks for any help.

I guess I'm not the only one who doesn't like it. Half the time, on a phone, I hit the top suggestion instead of the "x".

I agree with both of you on all the points...
Before I realized what was happening, I was wondering why, when I was searching for a random term, it would lead me to a random device forum instead -- because it was inadvertently searching for the forum of the drop down suggestion closest to the search box...
I really hate searching for a term like "boot" or "root" or "command" with another term, because i just get every result in the end! Half the time, i end up googl'ing "site:forum.xda-developers.com 'term' 'term'" if I need to search more than one term or if a term is too common...
Hi ,
search on this forum with option "search titles only" does not work at all. Only one sample : try to find:
magisk delta
and no results.
But use google.com:

and first find is :

Maybe time to replace search with google.com ?
The crickets on this thread are deafening. Meanwhile, folks are constantly admonished to "search before asking". When you can't search a 100+ page thread for an exact space-separated phrase, most reasonable people are gonna throw in the towel. These forums are fantastic, it's is the go-to resource for everything android ROM/Theme-related. And it's free. And I do appreciate it. A lot. But frankly, the search (lack of)functionality is an embarrassment.

Likely because there has been several threads already about this, and several discussions in other threads.
driving me NUTS too!
As is the inability to search in a particular thread
and using Google site specific only gives top level thread titles
can't find sht these days!
If they wanna keep people visiting & onsite they need to have good search facility for when we need specific info
edit: some forums don't show the option to search "this thread" or "this forum" just "forums" .... but it's now working on the above, when i tested prior to post, it wasn't ... a bug?
