Hello all...
I typically charge my phone while I sleep and it has never been a problem. I was running the stock deodexed ICS rom on my phone at the time. i unplugged it and all was well as usual. i grabbed my phone to come put a JB rom on it this morning and i left it on my desk, not plugged in. I came back to it and it was HOT, the entire phone, and wouldn't do anything. I took out the battery and let it cool (phone and battery) and now I got nothing.
Is there anything I can do??? I tried to search but couldn't find anything on this...
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

See if you can get into download mode or recovery. But let it cool for awhile.

sounds like a hard brick. check out mobiletechvideos.com on youtube they will fix it for $50
Question how would it be a hard brick if he didn't flash any ROMs on it yet..said he was running stock ROM and the phone got hot and wouldn't respond...sounds like the mother board is fried

my phone once was doing that same thing when it was just sitting there on the table. I picked it up though and felt it was very hot and pulled the battery before it could fry itself. It probably was some code that was looping or something because my phone never did it again

I'm not sure if I'm posting in the correct place as this is my first time, so I apologize in advance if not. As my the title states I currently have a samsung epic 4g that will not boot past the samsung screen. The phone is not rooted and was running stock software. This phone also will not load a recovery menu as it will not boot past the samsung screen (and yes I'm aware of the redundancy). I have tried flashing older stock files using odin and I get a successful read with no errors, however when the phone resets post flash it will still not boot past the samsung screen.......PLEASE HELP I am at my wits end and open to suggestions. Best I can say to you both is get a stronger cable if your not already using one and if you do have a cable other than the oem one then try leaving the battery out of the phone and hold the power button for about a minute to let the capacitors discharge then let it sit with the battery still out for about an hour :/ if you don't mind me asking, what happened to the phone before the issue started?
Try to Odin with the battery out.

Thanks for the replies. I am trying "the duce's" advice first, no luck yet. She had went to take a picture of the "beautiful sky" last night in the hot tub and dropped it. Must have been some kind of failure mode for hardware check then. I had the same thing with my airbag switch in my truck. Airbag light came on because the stupid bulb in the switch was blown. Almost cost me $35 for a switch instead of $1.50 at Radio Shack.

You can try a reflash, restore your previous nand backup and try again, or Odin in a prerooted ROM and start from there. But if it goes more than a minute on SAMSUNG you are done. After flashing the S will take a few minutes (or whatever boot screen the ROM has) while it rewrites Dalvik cache.
My epic is doing the same thing. It was stuck in recovery menu when I pulled it out of my pocket. Rebooted and stuck on sanding screen.

I had the EXACT some problem last week. I went to the repair center, said the phone was plugged in at work, we had a power surge, and afterwords the phone wouldn't turn on. An hour later...BOOM, new phone
I then went on amazon and purchased a usb jig and kept my phone stock until it came. lol
Every rooted owner should spend the 2 bucks on a USB jig. It's not the holy grail, but it's one more tool in your belt to potentially get out of a frustrating and time consuming situation.
I bought mine from here and got it pretty quickly considering where it came from ...

I forgot to mention letting it sit when I mentioned this to someone else (or was it here?) about pulling battery and SD card. Also repeatedly press or hold power button with those out to purge any remaining juice in the phone. This stuff sounds crazy but ask any former OG Epic owner.. some of these tricks have brought phones back from the dead. There isn't a pinhole under the battery cover below the camera is there?
That last part was an OG Epic inside joke but the rest is worth trying

Now sometimes it wont even recognize the battery when I try to charge it when the phone is off. Do you guys think its a failing battery or the phone? Ya I dont but I am taking it back to sprint later today to see what is going on. I am pretty sure it is either the battery or a loose connection somewhere in the phone because like I said in my earlier post this thing has always been extremely sensitive like if I accidentally put it down hard or anything it will reboot. Also like I said in my other thread it likes to reboot randomly when just in my pocket too. I also noticed whenever I try to run titanium backup it reboots 99% of the time before it finishes.

Well the thing is I can transfer stuff flawlessly on it. I took it to the sprint store the guy played with it for 2 hours and told me there is absoluetly nothing wrong with it so I dont know what to think. It has been running good ever since I got it back. I knew that would happen though as soon as ya bring something in to get it fixed it works flawlessly! The guy gave me a new charger idk I did try numerous chargers and they all said battery disconnected but this one actually does seem to be working so we will see what happens.
My Brothers phone is Rooted and its currently using the JoyRide 4.1.1 ROM. But as the title said hes having issues with the battery and getting random reboots. He said he would charge the phone to 100% and in one hour it would go down to 15% then shutdown. He would also be using the phone and just randomly the phone will shut off, and the only way to turn it on is to connect it to the Charger.
I'm wondering if he needs a new battery? should he go back to fully stock before going to the store?.. and how can i get him back to fully stock?
I've search but can't find a clear answer.

THIS HAS BEEN VERIFIED BY ME, AND JOKERSAX HAS TOLD ME ABOUT TWO OTHER DEVS WHO HAVE HAD SIMILAR RESULTS
This is a public service announcement saying that if you leave recovery (I left TWRP on overnight while restoring a nandroid) on too long, under certain circumstances not yet completely determined may lead your device to a hard brick. This has happened to 3 people so far, and want to avoid anymore issues with this.
For more details on what happened I was flashing a V5 test build of my rom im working on adding aroma too where I got another syntax error to fix. It was about 11:30 at night, so I just started restoring from a nandroid, threw the phone upside down, and knocked out. When I woke up the next morning I checked the device and it was off in recharge mode- nothing too big. I then tried to boot and it ended up flashing the notification light and softkeys repeatedly, and did nothing else. I was able to get it into download mode, but LGNPST kept timing out. Then after trying several times with it timing out it wouldnt get into download mode. I then tried to just get anything to light up, and left it on the charger for several hours, and then gave up that my device was hard bricked. No data remained. I had to go to best buy and wait about an hour and a half for them to get me a new device. I hope everyone can avoid this happening to their device. It is a slow, but sure death reported by a few people.
And to think I left my phone in recovery. for about 2 hours =x scared to even boot to recovery now

Only thing that could heat up the phone like that is the cpu core running at max.or spiking to max very very rapidly. Basically the soc with all the chipsests are not going into a sleep mode. I can see why all the data was gone and or damaged. I've seen something like this with other electronics.

I have not left recovery on long enough to experience noticeable overheating myself. I wish I knew how to fix the recovery myself though. Also as for making this a sticky (I read half the posts through email, and might have got this thread mixed up) mods are kinda inactive, so it will be hard for us to do.

I have heat up while playing games or streaming music, or leaving it at the lockscreen too long. Maybe undervolting it can fix it? IDR if joker's test kernel added it or not.
