Xperia Arc S - Low internal memory and Root - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

my experia arc s is running android 2.3.4 (which came with the phone 1 year ago).
Am having low internal memory issues. I have moved all apps to SD wherever possible. i wanted to ask some help on couple of things:
1) how do i actually find out what is using all the internal memory? have downloaded Apps2SD and there are no apps that can be moved to SD. Apps i downloaded from playstoe only total up to about 55 /60MB. So i dont know what is using rest of the 400MB memory? is it SMS / email? if so how do i find out what is consuming the most so i can try to fix it.
2) if i cant solve that, i will look to root the device as i believer there is an app which allows to use SD card as internal memory? Where do i start? how do i root the phone. I am sure there must be a guide somewhere but would appreciate some help.
3) any thoughts on what is the current best custom ROM for my arc S? then i can find the relevant thread on here and ask specific questions?
thanks alot
x

You can wipe cache for some apps. It can be up to 100MB. Especially Maps, browser, apps that download a lot of images (Reddit apps, 9gag, ...).

It doesn't get better with sony's ics firmware either, the only custom rom i think legitimately would be cyanogenmod and miui.
I have been using cm for a while now but with moderate installs and it seems to be a rom i would stick with until my new phone
edit:
I have only almost 2 slides-worth of custom apps installed with this current internal storage status
Total space: 380MB
Apps: 295MB
Available: 128MB

From the middle of nowhere
to the center of everywhere,
through my Arc S!!

2)
Root your device and flash a zip by xtreme silencer. use this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974972
create an ext-4 partition and so on, everyhing is written in this thread. just follow his instructions. it is easy.
now you might ask what this mod does: the mod uses this ext-4 partition on your sd card as "internal memory", which means that you can adjust your internal memory. (as example stock arc s has about 400 mb or something in this direction, i have 4 gb internal memory)
3)
the best custom rom? you know, it depends on how you use your phone. recommended is (in my oppinion) cm10 by fxp (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780316) for allday-usage or ultimate hd rom by jader (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1920207)
hope i could help.

(sorry for my bad english, i'm in school at the moment so i have to hurry a little bit)

Is there a way to put the cache on the SD?

ta
thanks for ur replies.
i have cleared cache through Apps2SD but still there is less than 40MB remaining space.
Re the Rooting and custom rom, this is a new bie question. do i need to do both? if i install custom rom, do i need to then root the device either before or after to use SD card as internal memory? i am sure there are guides on the forum and will search for it. its just a bit overwhelming to be honest for a new bie with so many different options and posts!
re the recommendation for custom rom, i am not a very heavy user of the phone. i use it to play normal games and mostly web browsing. only reason i havent updated to official ICS from sony is that with that version the LED notificiation light on the side of the phone stops working for missed calls / SMS etc.

you can increase you internal memory with the mod from XtremeSilencer

1) well, first step is rooting.
Second one is To search for a custom Rom (+custom kernel if you unlock your bootloader; if u want more information just ask) and the gapps hat fit To your rom
Then download flashtool.
now put the custom Rom, and the internal memory mod in your SD card.
Run flashtool
Flash the kernel.
Restart your device
Device will unter recovery automatcally
Wipe data
Wipe cache
flash Rom + gapps
Restart.
Make your phone ready to create ext4 partition
Create it
Restart your device and enter recovery (fast press the back button while the kernel Logo appears)
Flash xtremes' mod
And the result: LOVE YOUR NEW DEVICE!!
2) then decide wheter you want JB, ICS or GB Rom
You can ask more questions if you want.!
Hope i could help

I have the same issue: arcknight kernel 4.0 , jelly sandwich 7.4 rom, 16 gb sd card with 2 partitions fat 32 and ext4 . The problem is space, internal memory. I don' t seam to find a good and explain tutorial on how to xpand the internal memory. There are so many mud's, tweaks, zip files, etc....that just confuze me. Is there no one who can actualy explain what to do? I am willing to pay for a developer that can do that. And it is hard for me to think that i am the only one who has this problem

A2SD/A2SD+ on stock HTC rom ?

Hi all !
OK after reading a lot of stuff on the web (mainly modaco and xda), I finally understood a bit more this Apps2Sd thingy.
Like most people I have an "internal storage" problem on my desire
Now I managed to have fully rooted HTC Desire, with security off even though the bootloader is 0.9x using unrevoked. Great piece of software
Great so far, but I still have a space problem.
After further reading, I finally understood that thestandard Froyo Apps2Sd sucks and still eats up loads of internal memory because apps aren't designed to take advantage of it and a few other reasons but I digress.
So the only solution is to install the unofficial apps2sd or apps2sd+ (the ony diference being that app2sd+ also moves the dalvik cache, right ?)
However, so far, I've only read explanations about using a2sd/a2sd+ with a CUSTOM rom.
Now I know that modaco and xda custom roms are just great (used to test a few with my old acer liquid) but well I'm very satisfied of HTC stock rom indeed. Seriously, I can't see anything to change.
So, I'd like to use a2sd/a2sd+ but avoid going through wiping the phone, falshing a new rom and all...Furthermore, I took some time to link the contacts between gmail and facebook and I wouldn't like to do it again.
Is this possible to use a2sd/a2sd+ using the standard HTC rom, without having to flash a new custom rom ? And if yes, could some kindly explain me how ?
Best regards
D.

Theres the script for apps2sd, not sure if you can just flash the .zip though.
IMO, you might not think there's anything to change until you experience the changes, just get a custom rom and reap the benefits.
No, you need init.d support. Get a custom rom.

Allright, I finally decided to use LeeDroid's rom and, so far so good ! PLenty of free phone memory, with a ton of apps !! Thanks a lot for your usefull comments.
I was in the same predicaent yesterday, but gave up as I had to go out!
I had LeeDroid with A2SD on the phone, but it still ran out of space when I installed Need For Speed... but this was probably because I didn't have my SD Card partitioned.
Am I right when I think that I have to backup my SD Card, then go into ROM Manager and simply format the card in there for A2SD?
I tried this, but I still only see my SD card as 1 partition when I look in Windows 7. Is this right - or should I see 2 partitions?
Sorry for the newb questions - but I want to get it all sorted before I start setting the phone up the way I want!!
Windows cannot see ext type partitions, so this is ok. Yeah, backup, use ROM manager to make the partition, then recopy the backup.
Get Quick System Info from the Market, you'll see there if the ext partition is used afterwards.

Thanks for the reply.
I checked my partition with Quick System Info - and something must've gone wrong as my A2SD partition is only 16mb with only 2mb free!!
What settings am I supposed to use when I use ROM Manager to make the partition? I'm pretty sure I set the first one to 512mb and the second to 0mb like I read somewhere. Is this wrong?
Yeah, thats ok 512mb for apps and 0 for swap. Try it couple times, maybe the ROM manager didn't do it properly for the 1st time. Check with Quick System Info when its done.
Actually, you can use anything you want to format your microSDHC card. I used a computer with linux, a card reader and gparted, and I found it way more straightforward than using the phone to do the job. Gparted is included in Ubuntu and yu even have gparted live disk/usb (go to gparted.sourceforge.net. Sorry can't post links on the forum yet )

Hi,
i was lookin for a solution too and i found it.
I am running on stock rom froyo 2.2 on my htc desire.
16gb micro sd card. - no data loss.
Here is the steps.
HTC desire has to be rooted. and S-OFF (not sure if it works without S-OFF)
Busybox installed.
Next , download Gparted to partition your SD Card. (can run in VM )
Run Gparted, mount your card, USe Gparted to shrink your sd card. (i have my pics and videos inside the card up to 12gb.. and i shrink to 13gb.. It takes a looooong time.. about 13 mins to shink.. thank god my data is still intact..
i partition the extra 1gb.. set it as primary too and then format it as ext2... i have tried ext3 and ext4.. it cant be recognized by Desire.
put back yr SD card.. (if you use a card reader.. or can jus partition using Desire mounted as disk drive)
Next.. download. Link2SD , search in market..
Run the app and it will be able to detect and ask you to select the drive.. ext2 and press ok.
now.. use the app to link up yr app.. those with FRoyo app2sd.. u can click 'move to phone' and then use link2sd to link it..
you will start to see that your internal memory will increase as u move and link more apps using link2SD...
Now go to the link2sd option and set it to 'auto link' new installed app.
once u installed any new app.. it will be linked...
if the app is auto installed to SD card via the Froyo app2sd.. simply go to manage application and move it to phone and the use link2sd to link it..
(no.. you will not see the 1g size when u go under settings, you can check storage under the link2sd app)
Note: once u mount yr Desire as disk drive .. you will need to reboot your phone else if you install any new app.. it will be install to your real internal memory even thou it says linked... if this happens.. you might see low memory notification.. jus reboot your phone.. and when rebooted, it will be re-link automatically..
Cheers! i used to have 15mb left.. now i have 50++ mb.. and yet installed alot of apps.. without flashing a rom.. this will helps if you guys jus need more internal storage and do not wat to risk or go thru the restoration of data..
as usual... before you do anything... do a nandroid backup using clockworkmod recovery or any recovery and also titantium backup to backup the apps data in case anything goes wrong
Phone working well for the past 3 days
That's just AWESOME !! Many thanks for the tip, that's exactly what I was looking for

[Q] apps2sd, data2sd, link2sd - confusing me

Space is limited. (at least the space in our phones)
so I always read about apps2sd, data2sd, link2sd. I'm confused about how all they work, which ist best way to go. the information to read is very diffuse so don't blame me if I open a thread to understand the backgrounds.
So, I installed an app called App2SD (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.app2sd&hl=de) and moved supported apps to SD.
Now there I have root, I want to get to know about alternatives. So what are the methods out there, what to stick to best?
thanks for your help in advance.

I prefer link2sd based on practical experience with all three methods.
I find it the most customizable and fastest although unlike the other two it's not a set it and forget it solution it allows for some definite benefits in terms of file placement and speed.
data2sd and data2whatever tend to bog down over time for some reason where as link2sd keeps up to speed. Lot's of nice features and a great user interface as well.
It's also easily reversible if you don't like it. I can't say the same for the other two.
Here's a link to the original developer's thread and a little tutorial.
Same, Link2sd never worked for me haha
just installed link2sd, after a lengthy process getting stock rom back from a bad CM7 experience....now have a happy healthy stock rom, perm rootedm with link2sd and virtually all apps on the 2nd sd partition. i've basically gone through the "my apps" list on my market account and "linked" everything that's on the market, and kept the rest (pre-installed/not available on the market?) on the internal memory.
internal mem is reporting 108mb free, and i have a little under 1gb on my sd's 2nd partition.
so far so good...touch wood....fingers crossed
so yeh, i'd vote for link2sd.....it also does seem fairly "automated" to me....whenever i download a new app, it automatically links it and moves it to the 2nd partition (although you can manually move it back to internal if you get roblems with a specific app).
Installed Link2SD now. I like it. thx +1 for you 2
I'd like to know how Data2SD handles over time. Using a single file seems a little monolithic but if it works you can't argue with results.
Haven't anyone tried S2E? It's completely automatic and you don't need to set up anything.
Enviado desde mi HTC Wildfire S usando Tapatalk
Hey Dan,
I've never heard of the app, but a quick google search suggests it's made primarily for CM7. Link2SD does work well for the most part so I think it would be foolish to jump into something else. I've not seen the battery drain that some people have complained about too. The only real alternative for those trying to avoid custom ROM's is Data2SD, which I've heard mixed reviews about.

Link2SD works fine except for the fact that some apps like maps and gmail cause problems when moved..
And when I start up my phone (no fastboot) it always says low internal memory and then Link2SD starts to link all apps which gives me about 60MB free space

gmail causes problems? ive not observed a problem with gmail as of yet, what kind of problems?

Hi,
what is the ext that you have on the 2nd partition?
I have ext4 and the Link2SD don't recognize the 2nd partition.
Cump,s
I've been using Link2SD ever since I started using CM. It has been working well for me. No issues with Gmail or Maps. Even my home screen app and keyboard are on the external partition. I just set CM to always keep the home screen in memory. The SD partition is formatted as ext2 because I don't see the need for a journaling filesystem (ext4).
Edit - to contribute to the original question.
I'm not so sure about the other options but I can explain a bit about Link2SD.
Basically what it does is move your application files to the external partition and then create symlinks where those files originally were. Symlinks are tiny files that arejust pointers to where the actual files are. The good part is that the OS does not care. It just sees the symlinks as the actual files. Seeing that it is the actual files that are symlinked, means that you can fine tune it to your needs... as opposed to linking whole directories or mounting a partition to something like/data/app/.

That's normal, some apps don't tell the internal memory that they were linked to the SD card.
Simply turn your phone off (hibernate) and turn it on again , this should give you the additional free memory
Link2SD
I've tinkered with Data2SD and A2SD also but just don't understand how they work. Wasted time restoring my SD card after wiping it out. Link2SD works perfectly but I see some ROM photos showing a ton of free internal space and can't seem to figure out a way to get that little bit of extra space.

Try these steps:
1) Using Link2SD uninstall all the stock htc application that you dont like and dont need ( Most of them can be removed without any problem -> All widgets, google search, twitter, facebook , facebook for htc sense, plurk, htc likes, htc hub, xms ebuddy, stocks and many more, i forgot the names ).
You can always backup these using titanium backup if you are apprehensive.
2) Backup every application , contact and sms on your phone because we will cleanout our phone.
3) Now when you are ready boot into recovery and clean Data, Cache and Dalvik Cache. If possible also backup your sd card and format both fat32 and ext2 partitions .
4) Reboot and install Link2Sd, Mount ext2 partition and setup to link your files ( from settings ) then reboot and freshly install everything. You will find a hugh difference in internal memory
---------------------------------------------------------
I had 80mb internal memory free with 52 application installed, I did the above things and now i have 110mb free space with 60 apps installed which also includes updates of the remaining stock applications. However after doing all this dont move anything to sd card using your a2sd or applications will get corrupted

What you suggest is to move the needed apps to system partition after the installation?
To root your phone look in the dev section look for post by doomlord for his easy root tools read post carefully follow all steps and you will have a rooted phone in no time.
It shouldn't go wrong but make a backup of sms, contacts etc
Once rooted you can use an app called titanium backup or root explorer found or link2sd in the play store these well help in cleaning dalvik cache, moving apps to system and move non moveable to external.
Need further help just ask here.

Yes
Some apps I moved are facebook, twitter, maps...
Anything that came with the phone and that take up a lot space and that can't be moved to the SD card.
And in case you run out of space in the system partition, look at flo95's junk apps thread to see what apps you can remove from ics without affecting your phone.

[Q] Desire have not enough space

Hi everybody!
I've a Desire with stock rom 2.3 (and no root yet) and it worked fine until last week.
If I try to install a new app I receive an error about free memory space. I've already try to move all apps to sd but nothing, I can't install anything.
I've try also to do an hard reset and fully wipe/factory reset (from recovery) and for a while it seems to works, but if I install some apps the problem come back.
Why? What can I do?
A friend suggest that maybe there are some directory in filesystem from older app (now unistalled) and, since I haven't root permession, I can't remove them. With root permission can I fix it?
Thanks!
I flashed a custom rom on my desire which used the sd card as internal storage. Problem solved.

Download a custom rom from the htc desire dev section and flash it. I would recommend milwilds redux rom. It will automatically install apps to the parittion and you will have space.
thanks for reply!
I'd like to fix this problem without flash new rom, eventually with root only. It's possible?
When I bought this there was space enough, why now I haven't? Factory reset does not erase all partition and sistems directories?
Thanks!
Also, before you flash the Rom, best to flash recommended hboot if necessary, read the first post or search each thread.
This way you use your internal memory more efficiently.

Factory reset only deletes user data.
When you bought it, you didn't have apps installed, and probably apps were smaller back then.
What are you trying to say? That you want to flash a stock rooted ROM?

Nope.
All my apps were installed somewhere in filesystem (maybe in /system?). My question is: when I do a factory reset, what I'm going to erase? Only user data in user directories, or all content of every system directory? (of course, not system files).
I'm only trying to understand why when I bought the phone I've a "lot" of space for my app and now, after a factory reset, I've not enough free space to install more then 2/3.
Example: I wipe/fr, reboot and config the phone; then I try to install Ruzzle (16Mb),Whatsapp (9Mb) and FB(18Mb). Now if I try to install any other apps I get the alert message of free space. Same error if I try to record a video or take a photo.
I think there is something wrong..
I hope that you can read and understand what I'm writing, my english is a little rusty

A factory reset will wipe /data, dalvik cache and /cache.
When did you buy your phone? I remember that, when I first bought my Desire, facebook was only 8mbin size, and moved to sd, it only took 2 mb of internal memory. Plus, large apps require large dalvik cache. That's why your memory gets filled so easily.
You can resolve easily and keeping your stock ROM (but you'll need a FAST microSD card, my 32GB is class 10):
1) Root and s-off your device
2) Format your microSD with an EXT2, EXT3 or EXT4 partition of 1GB, then the rest as FAT32 (you can do it directly from phone using the 4ext recovery, or you can format the card from PC using a tool for partitioning which supports linux formats... I don't know if I can mention names in this thread).
3) Install INT2EXT or INT2EXT+ from recovery.
4) You'll have 1GB internal memory with no out-of-space problems.
That's all
Stock kernel doesn't support ext4 nor ext3, use only ext2 if u want to keep it.
Anyway, I believe that supernova ROM would be a much better option, it's basically stock GB made by HTC with some tweaks and script for more space.
Thanks for replies!
I still do not understand why I've no memory for apps after a factory reset; if I wipe all data, I restore all space, like when I bought the phone. Ok, apps are bigger than 2 years ago, but not so bigger that with 3 apps I occupy all space!
Anyway I'm considering to upgrade to a newer version; if I must give root permission, install tools, repartition sdcard and so on, I might as well to flash a newer version.
Curiosity: are there filesystem directories that are not intrested from a wipe? Differently, which directories will not wiped during a factory reset?
Thank you very much!

yes what your seeing is caused by the apps being a lot bigger now. Facebook is a lot bigger.
And its impossible for your apps to be going to system. You'll have to root and use a2sd

I've install over 40 apps until this problem, including big app like FB.. strange things...
So, how much memory I have?
Rom 4.x for desire has a different partitions? If I just flash a new rom (like 4.0/4.1), will I fix this problem?
Thanks!

You need a rom with an a2sd script, regardless of it being GB, ICS or JB.
Good, I will search in subforum for a new rom.
Maybe it's a bit OT, but JB rom are stable enough for daily use? Can you suggest me a JB rom with a2sd script? (or even ICS, if JB is not stable enough).
Thank you!
I use jb as a daily driver. The ROM in my sig is the most stable jb ROM I've tried. It has very few soft reboots and has decent speed. It also has a2sd. (Activated through terminal after flashing rom)
However if you really need stability, speed and reliability I would highly recommend using gingerbread. Mildwilds ROMs are great and most of them have an a2sd script as well, which is automatically activated. Try the one based on redux.

I have a similar problem to this. I own a HTC Desire that is rooted, with Clockworkmod recovery environment, and I got it running Cyanogen mod 7.2.0.1.
So I was reading around this problem, and there are several solutions. It seems the most foolproof way is to format your SD card and partition it so that you have an EXT3 partition, and a FAT32 partition as has already been suggested here.. This way you can use an app to fool your phone into thinking that it has the EXT3 partition of the SD card to use for internal storage as well as the 150MB of internal storage it comes with. I had an 8GB SD card so I did a split of 2GB for the EXT3 partition, and 6GB for storage of music, photos, etc. etc. I followed this handy guide to do it, and it worked a treat: (sorry, have been unable to post an external link as I'm a new user.. maybe I can post this later).
When I rebooted my phone, sure enough, it showed 2GB+ of internal storage, and I can install all the apps I want. However, I'm experiencing apps hanging and crashing all the time, and I know it was caused by this most recent change. Prior to this, Cyanogenmod was running just fine! I've read a bit more into since doing this, and a lot of people reckon you shouldn't use more than a 512MB SD card partition, as anything over this causes performance issues. Others disagree, and think that anything 2GB or below should be fine. Presumably the apps hanging/crashing is because there is fragmentation of data between the SD card EXT3 partition and the actual 150MB internal storage.
It's frustrating, as other than this the phone is still a very decent handset despite it's age... it's really the storage letting it down. Before I try factory resetting (again!) and going back and trying a 512MB partition, (or just going back to having only 2 apps installed!), has any one else had experience of this?
Any help very much appreciated.

well,I don't use gingerbread anymore.but I can say that you can't experience a good performance to use both internal and external (sd-ext) partitions to use and install your apps. better choice is to use one of them.use default a2sd of rom,or use another script to install apps only in sd-ext partition. I have used and tested a lot of roms (GB-ICS-JB) and I can say in my experiences, that you don't have problem to use an sd-ext partition with about 1.5 - 2 gb size.you can see the recommendation of devs in first post of topics, and they tell us what is the minimum-maximum size for the best performance. sorry,i can't search and give you the links, but I just had a really good smoothness and speed with some scripts that you can try them: like mounts2sd, ad2sdx,... you can find link of them with search. and you can use cm7 int2sd version...but it has a bigger size than normal cm7. here is this topic : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357257
@kmanpilkers
Which guide did you use to partition, should be done with gparted or 4ext recovery.
-Ext4 should also be slightly faster than ext3.
-Anything up to 2gb is sufficient. Don't know where you read about limiting it to 512mb. The whole idea is to be able to install more apps on the partition, 512mb will fill up a lot quicker than 2gb...
-you can use space more efficiently by s-off and changing hboot, so you have more than 150 MB of internal. You are currently on stock hboot and have a lot of free wasted space on your /system partition
-depending on your Rom, stick with a single a2sd script, it may be built in or need to be activated, read the Rom thread. Then let it do it's job to move apps to the partition

Thank you. I've been searching for some time

[Q] First time root/custom ROM for this phone - How? Walkthrough guide please?

Can anybody here please help?
A friend of mine has this phone (Wildfire S) and I has become frustrated at the very limited storage for apps.
I have rooted phones previously myself (Xperia X10 and Xperia S) and used custom ROMs on them, but I don't have a clue how to do this on the HTC Wildfire S, OR which custom ROMs are decent. Are the KitKat 4.4 ROMs good/speedy enough for daily use?
If anyone could provide a simple way of rooting and using a custom ROM on this phone which allows more app storage space (such as on the SD card) that would be fantastic!
Many thanks
Sorry for responding to my own post, but I've now successfully unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone, but I was left confused by some issues that I can't find the answers to:
With my own previous phones, Sony Xperia X10 and Xperia S, I have rooted those and run custom ROMs and kernels. However, when looking for a custom ROM for the Wildfire S, there don't seem to be any kernels. Does this mean I can use any custom ROM, be it Gingerbread 2.3 to KitKat 4.4 with the same CWM Recovery that I have on the phone right now when I rooted it? Are the kernels built in to the ROMs that are downloaded?
Also another question is how do I go about increasing the storage space on the phone now that I have rooted (be it on either the stock ROM or a Custom ROM)? My friend has a 2GB MicroSD card in the phone. If I was to install a KitKat ROM for example, how could I make sure the apps could be installed and run from the SD Card? What's an easy way to allocate a portion of the 2GB for apps??
Finally, which ROM would you recommend trying on the phone rather than the stock ROM, which is not sluggish but also very functional?
So basically to sum up:
Do I need to flash kernels to use custom ROMs?
How do I increase the storage size so that many more apps can be installed?
What is a nice, fast custom ROM that you would recommend?
I'd appreciate any information to help me on this one. Like I said, with my own personal phones, which have always been Sonys, I've got used to the rooting methods on those, but I had a lot of questions with this phone so would be grateful if somebody could help get this phone to a more functional standard.
Thanks

No you don't need to flash any kernels if you don't want to.
Use int2ext or Link2SD. Search about them.
The answer to the last question depends on your needs and you will have to try a bit yourself. You can start with CM10.
Thanks very much for the response aWFSuser.
1) Thanks, that's one thing I don't need to worry about then! (although, just thought, it might be nice to OverClock the CPU to 800Mhz - can I do this as standard or will I need another Kernel?)
2) I will have a read up about these, although from your experience, of the two tools you have listed, which would you say is easiest to configure? I've read before about setting up partitions on the SD card for extra app storage, but have never had to do it on my own phones
3) I will have a look around! Tempted to try some of the KitKat ROMs that I can see for download on the Development thread. If I don't have to mess around with flashing kernels, it's quite good to know that I can have many custom ROM zips on the SD card and install them without having to worry about hooking it up to the USB to flash a kernel.
Thanks again, hoping I can get some joy with this. My friend's absolute main needs with this phone is extra storage for apps - he is constantly getting "Not enough storage" errors, but I looked in his Google Play "installed list" and there was only 4 or 5 apps installed, and they were small ones!!

Every ROM comes with its own kernel and most of them are overclockable. But overclocking to 800 MHz will not be a good idea if you don't want random reboots. Overclocking upto 768MHz is probably fine.
Int2ext is a script and you can flash it and forget. But Link2SD is an app which has an interface. Though it requires more configuring, it gives control on what to move and not to move and also it works in every rom I tried. I personally use Link2SD.

Perfect.
Thanks for that information. Good to know that I shouldn't overclock to the "max" 800mhz!
Also, after reading around guides on flashing the ROMs, it seems I will still have to use the USB cable in order to flash each ROMs "boot.img" file, but that's not a major problem.
I will have a look at Link2SD. Is it something you do after you have installed and configured a ROM?
Thanks very much for your advice and informative replies :good:

No, you don't have to flash the boot.img files. They are inside the ROM zips that you will download. You will just need to flash the rom via recovery (ofcourse after wiping).
Link2SD is just an application, you can install it any time but you still have to partition your memory card.

Format the 2GB card into two partitions. The first one should be FAT32 and the 2nd one ext2. Then flash the int2ext script right after flashing the rom.

I must be doing something wrong, but not sure what!!
I have partitioned the SD card using multiple different CWM recoveries and formatted the SD-EXT partition. However, whenever I flash any INT2EXT through CWM Recovery, the ROM I am using is always messed up. One ROM I try for example, after a long bootup, just has endless FCs, starting with .com.android.phone.
If I don't flash INT2EXT, it works but obviously I have very little storage.
Don't know where I am going wrong on this one. Any ideas?

Are you sure you have really two partitions on the sd-card? I have never partitioned through cwm so don't know the exact procedure. You can mount the sdcard to computer via the usb cable. BTW you have to flash the script right after flashing rom. And have you tried link2sd?

I am as sure as I can be that I have two partitions, because when I mount the USB storage so I can access it in Windows, the partition size is much smaller (i.e - if I create a 512MB EXT partition through CWM, Windows shows the 2GB capacity as 1.4-ish GB) However, CWM doesn't give me any indication on which type of EXT partition I am creating. I would like to create an EXT4 one, but it doesn't seem to give me the option. I can't seem to be able to see the partitions in Windows when I mount the USB storage either. I just see the FAT32 partition in Windows Disk Management.
As another update, I tried Link2SD instead of INT2EXT this morning. It picked up the fact I have another partition, but it asks me which type it is (EXT2, EXT3, etc) and as I do not know, I may be picking the wrong options. Anyway I think I managed to get apps installed into the EXT partition, but in Android's storage settings, it still shows 150MB internal storage - is this correct? When I see screenshots of others using tools like INT2EXT or Link2SD, their Storage settings seems to show the new storage size. So maybe it isn't working? Also, when I tried to install the Facebook app, although the app installed (and Link2SD said it was on the SD card) when I tried to start the app and it reads "Setting up Facebook", the system runs out of storage.
Thanks for all your help so far

Link2SD would not show the internal memory as increased, you can see that from the app itself (menu->storage info). You can enable auto-linking in settings. By the way if the app is on sdcard, then its not on the 2nd partition. To move it to the 2nd partition you have to link it. Make sure to link apk,dex and lib. If you have paid version then you can also link data. As for facebook, I have not used it in a while but it may have large amount of dex files that have to be linked. Also the data may be large. And remember to reboot if storage space runs out.
Also which rom are you on?

Thanks to your post two posts earlier, I think I have cracked the storage thing
When it wasn't working previously, like I said, I had been doing the partitioning in CWM.
However, I managed to get the system mounted under Windows so that I could do the partitioning in Mini Partition Wizard as many recommend. Now when I install a ROM and then install Int2Ext4 straight after, the extra storage shows up in settings once the ROM is booted
ROM-wise, I have just been messing around with any I can get my hands on from the development thread, to see if I could get the storage problem sorted first and foremost, as this is the most important part for me (well, for my friend!) However, is there a favourite ROM of yours you'd recommend? I've tried so many over the last 2 days that I'm forgetting which does what! I tried a KK ROM which I thought was very slow, but also I tried an OWL 2013 ROM which was performing very well - but there is no keyboard! And I can't seem to be able to install one. If there's one you could recommend which is quite speedy, that'd be great
Thanks

CM10.1 (probably owl that you mention) is good. Keyboard is probably with Gapps and you need to install it. Anyway I usually use Touchpal Keyboard which works great. KK is slow but CM10 and CM10.1 are good. For best speed use gingerbread based roms.

Yes I agree, the OWL has been my stable ROM for almost 2 years.. Now I am moving towards the latest CM, the Olivier's one.. Give it a look!
Thanks for the responses guys.
Which Android version/CM is Olivier's latest based on? Have you got a link to the thread?
I agree that GB ROMs will be best for speed, but I've tried a few based on JellyBean 4.2.2 and they seem very quick, I am actually shocked (for a phone with such a low processor speed etc, it runs these modern ROMs so much better than my old Sony Xperia X10)
However, one thing I notice is, despite installing GAPPS on any of the JB/KK ROMs, there are certain Google Apps missing, and I can't install them from the market either. For example, Google Search - when I look for it in the market, it says that the app is not compatible with the Android version I am running. However, I know for sure that Google Search runs on any Android version. It let me download the new Google Now Launcher, but I can't run it because it needs Google Search installed, but I can't install it from the market.

Current Google Search has official support for only armv7 devices, but our phone's processor is armv6. You can still download the apk and install but voice recognition will not work.
By olivier's latest he probably meant CM11 that you used earlier but it is slower tham 4.2.2 roms.
