Best ROM for stability and functionality? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

What's the best best ROM for stability and functionality on the Galaxy Nexus Smartphone? I don't want anything cutting edge because I want the phone to be 100% functional. Oh, I'm with Rogers here in Canada
Any suggestions?

Thx. Stock is working for me just fine, but I know the damn power button is gonna die soon and I wanna get an app that uses the screen to turn the phone on. I have a proximity app now but it's poor and doesn't work that well as it turns the phone on when I don't want and a lot of the time it doesn't work.

Seriously try purity rom. And give ak kernel a try.

Wrong thread.
Bad question to ask.
Why? It can cause arguments, each phone works differently despite the general consensus, people are biased towards their favorite ROM (which can cause arguments), and you can only, truly know through personal experience with each ROM.
Thread reported.
Have a nice night.

You can user pgm nexus on stock. Flashing a custom ROM has nothing to do with using an app to turn the screen on. I used pgm on stock rooted for about a month.

PS- if you are worried about wearing out the power button.. give either pgm or smart screen on a try, they are both on play store

Thx, but doesn't smart screen use the proximity sensor? If so, I found the last app I tired (ProximityScreenOff) that used it a little finicky.

Some good easy roms.

So I have on order from tmobile 2 of these phones for my parents, they wanted to upgrade and learn how to use them. But coming from well... I nokia bar phone, and a old samsung slide phone, this change might be a little big. So I was wondering if you guys could recommend some good stable roms that are easy to use, have somewhat decent battery life. Or even if should I just stick with the stock one? Thank you guys. -CptSamir
I just released a ROM earlier today.
_Thursday
Personally I would let them knock around the stock rom for a little while until they get used to android and then try a custom ROM later.

Since they're for your parents, I would leave them as is, stock. Chances are, they're never going to understand or utilize the phone's full potential. Unless you plan on always being available to immediately troubleshoot any and all errors/issues that might/will pop up with a custom ROM, stock is the way to go. Even stock blows away other phones available.

If this is there 1st foray into Android, leave it stock. The worst thing you can do is have a custom ROM on it, then have it do some weird stuff, and they are up a creek when they go to the store to have them fix it.
If they want to mod the phone and mess with it, let them make the choice and let them learn to do it.
You could at least root and debloat the phones.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
I wouldn't do anything to them, this phone is good stock. The last thing you need is them accidentally going to recovery and messing with something they shouldn't.
That's the best thing to do IMO.

Thank you for all the replies. I will stick with the stock rom for now and see how they like it. Hopefully (wish me luck) they will go from using the phone to just make calls, and use the phone to help their lives.

Pretty much it depends on your parents understanding of Technology my mother I got her into android I gave her my old Vibrant custom rom and all and from time to time i would update it to something newer and she would get how to use it pretty quick sure she has had some issues but if your knowledgeable enough you can help em in those snags as for ROMs i would suggest Bombaridier personally my favorite
I would just stick with the stock one personally. And this is coming from someone who in the past ALWAYS flashed a custom rom on other phones.
I'd flash a custom kernel, like darkside, because it make the phone much smoother

I vote for stock as well. I am still on stock (rooted and bloat-frozen) and it works well for me. If we had MIUI, then I would recommend that because your parents could easily cusome the look of their phones to their hearts' content without alot of knowledge and without great risk.

I'm in the same boat you are. I rooted my phone, but at least for the time being, I don't want to use a custom ROM. With that choice comes sacrifices. I'll likely never get a % battery mod or a custom lock screen. Life is full of choices.

im trying to root my optimus v but i just made an account and can't post in the thread i want because i need 10 posts.
for me stability of my phone is very important and custom rom doesn't really give me that feeling just yet, there is always something issues going on...
back in the days the reason why i went w/ cm7 vs stock rom is because it was cleaner, now that I have ICS its pretty clean as it comes, developer puts in his own tweaks what he feels is important (may not be important to me) and with that comes some unstable/untested code which i'm not ready to do beta testing
so i'm fine w/ stock rom and i'm loving it, of course someone may not think this way and want to go w/ cm9 nightly or some other custom rom its up to this person (who am I to tell otherwise)
i just wanted to know if maybe i missed something and it can be done with stock rom, but apparently thats not the case (or at least doesn't seems so)
I think you might want to try out one of the custom roms first. I thought that too. But these roms seem to be a whole different level of professionally coded compared to the cm7 days. Aokp to start with, then expand if necessary to paradigm etc. I think you'll be surprised, you're getting stock stability with extras.

SGS3 from iOS

I am a longtime android user, own all nexus devices, etc.
My brother is thinking about making the jump from iPhone to an sgs3, should he stay on touchwiz or should I help him get a stable ROM on there? Maybe AOKP jellybean?
Suggestions and opinions/experiences appreciated.
I'd say stock for a bit then later aokp. Let him get a taste of both worlds...
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium
Agree. Flashing a frequently updated ROM might be a bit much for an iPhone user, and touchwiz is friendly enough!
I'd say stock w/ either Apex/Nova launcher
I say let him run stock, maybe if he wants a luncher on top of it, but if coming from iOS I would let him run TW fully there are some really cool features in TW that he will enjoy so much .
I say run stock for a few months, or until he is throughly annoyed by touch wiz. Then start flashing. Let him get used to how Android works, the menus, eyv before throwing custom stuff at him. If he doesn't know how it's SUPPOSED to work, he won't know when it DOESN'T work on a custom.
Personal opinion but no god awful touchwiz...and with the USSD bug goin around even more reason for me to never ever reccommend anyone use it
You say you have all the Nexus devices, so I'm assuming that means the Galaxy Nexus? How about letting him use your Nexus and you get an S3? That way he can get used to pure Android without having to root.

Aren't alot of features that come on the GSIII tied into TW? I haven't switched to AOKP on this phone but ran it on my GSII. There are things you have to give up by going AOKP or CM.

Like crap battery life, 26 hrs plus on AOKP. Lol. There are TW features that are missing (certain camera features come to mind). But to the point of the OP, if you haven't used TW much, you won't miss them. Yes, AOKP/CM10 are updated frequently, but you don't have to update unless you want to. If the build you are on is stable, battery life is great and you're happy, don't update. I flash every update, my wife is on an early August build. For a person new to the S3, I would stay stock for a month (30 day return policy). If they're happy, leave it alone. If the battery sucks, root it, load Titanium Backup, and kill all the S-crap and carrier bloat. It should be a learning process, done in steps. Android is fun and there are so many options, which (to me) is why it is better than IOS. Too many people rush into custom ROM's without acquiring the basic knowledge of how Android works.

Lags

Hey. After I flash a new rom, the phone is super quick and respones very well. Buy after a few days, it starts to get laggy. When I am presaing the soft keys it takes a couple of seconds to respond, apps loading times can reach about 20 seconds, contacts loading too. I am using the GSM Gnex with CNA 3.8 rom and franco kernel r298. The lags occurred with XenonHD too. Dont get me wrong, I am not complaining about the developers, I am just trying to figure out if I am doing something wrong.

Are you rebooting your phone or just leaving it on for weeks at a time?
I remember someone saying it has to do with the zram optimizations in roms and kernels. at first it makes things faster and the the idea implemented is good in theory but over time it makes things unbearably slow. i dont know the technical reasons for this, someone with more knowledge than me may be able to explain it.

Obviously downloading from the Play Store is using system resources (RAM, a % of the processor etc.) so a slow down is to be expected.
The phone restarting itself =/= to rebooting it regularly. Just like your computer you shouldn't leave it running 24/7. Sometimes you just need to give your phone a restart.
I think the lags are related to the heatcof the Gnex. Maybe the my cheap case makes it worse. I will check without case so it have more contact with the air. I will report the results.

It looks almost like a memory leak. (That was a big problem on exynos devices runing cm10). It happened to me today (latest nightly cm10), Once my free ram was less than 100 mb the phone became noticeably less responsive.
Sane here!!! Thought it was just me... lol. I was running black bean baked! I love it but became super laggy! Almost threw it across my room lol. But just clashed slim bean and hope its bad ROM coding :-/.

I understand that custom roms do have great features but let me tell you something, after I switched from the S3 I decided not to flash any rom, I just used the nexus toolkit to root it and of course install franco kernel, since then the experience has been amazing, I'm just very careful with the apps I install, cheers!

I've experienced the same on about every JB setup I've tried. A reboot tends to purge assets and get me truckin' again for several days though.

Yup u are right. Many people used to tell that Franco kernel is the best and stuff but even that after using for a few days gets slow whereas in stock all that crap doesn't happen. I still use Franco because games work smoother on it compared to stock. Even the battery life is inconsistent. Just try stock after weeks and Franco right after a reboot still stock will be overall faster and smoother.

Alternate method to enter recovery?
Does anyone know of a way to enter recovery other than with using the power button? Is there a way to do it through ODIN?
I installed ICS Stock ROM, but I need to be able to enter recovery to do a factory reset.
My power button is broken. I can get into download mode (pressing volume up, volume down, and then inserting usb cable).
If the phone is off, I can also get the phone to power on (by inserting power cord, feeling vibrate, and then quickly removing power cord).
But I can't get into recovery. If anyone has any creative methods, that'd be awesome!
I'm saying goodbye, as well.
After installing ROM after ROM, I never found any that "just worked". Anything 4.4-based had all kinds of busted stuff (1080p video, Netflix, etc). 4.3 had camera/gallery issues. Even with 4.1 and 4.2 (including 4.1 stock), they still seem to suffer from "vbus_present" issues forcing me to reboot any time I unplug the device.
The device froze up on me and corrupted too many photos. I tried asking the community what the "best" ROM was, and mods closed the thread.
I wanted the T989 as a tool. Not something I had to babysit.
Maybe I'll get a Moto G or whatever Motorola's new phone is.

The way I see it....ROMs made of 4.2.2 and higher may have their odd glitches... But that just life bringing android versions to phones who's official support ended. Its either accept the odd problem, or stick with last official update. In this case touch wiz 4.1.2. Which is pretty much perfect.
Flashing custom ROMs comes with the odd glitch, no matter the phone. That's just how it is.
Stock is for those that can't accept the odd issue.
Good luck with your next phone!! The moto g is nice, for its price for sure!!!

A point I should have made.....the devs work hard and for free and for fun....and share with us lucky members.
They do their best with what they have to work with....especially on android versions not even created for our device.
They deserve our respect and thanks. If what's available disappoints anyone....they should keep it to themselves or choose their words wisely.
Without the devs.... We'd have nothing at all. Especially when Google stops giving us official updates.
Be grateful.
Still loving my Herc. Carbon rom with SaberMod Uber kernel and I have no complaints...

Current T989 kitkat bugs piss me off, lol. They seem to be putting finishing touches on it, then all of a sudden they make a bigger change that opens a whole new can of worms.
My power button got stuck several months ago, so I actually opened the phone up and removed the entire thing. To turn my phone on, I plug it in with a usb chord and hold volume up/down until I enter download mode, then I cancel it.
I use an app called Quick Boot to reboot, enter recovery and so on.
Also, I kind of agree with you guys. Sure, the latest 4.4 ROMs are a little buggy, but I've found 4.3 roms to be perfect, in terms of stability.
Got my T989 last november from a friend, second android device I had but the first to get serious with. Also tried to check for newer devices like that LG G2 but the chance for me to get a new one is far less than you can do.

I lucked out. I complained enough to tmobile about the screen blobs and lines from the amoled displays that they kept sending me as refurbs, wrote the CEO an email, then they called and agreed to send me a GS3 LTE, and let me keep my s2, so I immediately sold both phones and got the g2 new.
