[Q] Has anyone been able to Tether the Note2 ? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

So I have rooted my phone. There are two things I'd like to do. First I would like to be able to tether my phone and secondly I would like to delete some of the bloatware apps. Can anyone point me to the place to go to learn how to do these things? Thanks.
edit: (I have figured out how to remove bloatware since the original post using Titanium.)

Ever used Google search? Or YouTube it tether note 2

Both of the thing you want to do will be availble with a new custom ROM. Install TWRP, download a new rom into your SD card, back up, wipe then flash your new rom, all in TWRP and in that order.

CleanROM is a really good suggestion, really close to stock and it has all the things you want by default.

Ok. If I download the clean rom but then do a factory reset won't it delete the clean rom zip? An a factory reset wont delete my backup? I don't have TWRP, I have CWM can I use this? And thanks for any help.

Yes I have done searches and have only found that running a rom is the only solution that I have found, and since I like the stock rom on the Note 2 I was trying to avoid flashing a rom ( I have had bad experiences in the past with flashing rom's) but if that's the only way to get tether i'll do it. I should have been more clear in the original post. I was hoping someone had something like FoxFi running.

You can gain tether by installing a zip file after you root the phone. And yes you can stay on stock to do so.
But you won't have any of the benefits of a custom ROM. Per say, battery life, OC, bloat removed etc. But if your rooted already then you can try and find that zip is floating around somewhere here on XDA SEARCH!
Just my 2 cents...

Use Foxfi. Its only a couple of dollars for the License. It works on all The roms I've had on my Gnote2(stock,custom). And your right about titanium backup to get rid of bloatware. I bought a Pro key from them also. Well worth it.

Just Follwing the guide.
To setup use tethering use the mod by mostyle . http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2000851
And to remove bloat app use MrRobinson to remove it in TWRP. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1997329

I don't know what i'm doing wrong but Foxfi isn't working for me. But I've solved the problem by flashing CleanRom. I really like the 5x6 screen. and so far everything seems to be working well. Thanks everyone for all your advice.

I'm not sure about CWM on this phone, I haven't used it since I got my GNII because of the lack of support for external SD cards. Any reason in particular that you don't wanna use TWRP?

[Q] question about installing roms

Hi all, this is my first post and i hope to take advantage from it.
I've done a lot of research in the android development forums. The first thing i did to my phone was to get it rooted. So far so good, i followed the instructions and everything went ok.
Now i want to install a ROM. Thing is there is a lot of terminology i do not quite understand and i want to know for sure how this process is done correctly. In theory i know how to install a ROM but some disclaimers keeps me from doing it.
The main question here is, my phone has to meet some prerequisites in order to install a ROM? I mean, the android version of my phone, baseband version, kernel version and build number necessarily need to have the same characteristics from the ROM i will be flashing? For example, Team Kang's Juggernaut base band version is T989VKID mine is T989UVKL1, the android version is 2.3.5, mine is 2.3.6 and so on. That basically is it. I do not want to mess up my phone but at the same time i wanna enjoy those great roms.
Thanks in advance and i wish a happy valentine's day to all
Download ROM manager. Pick install from sd card. Wipe data and cache. Pick the ROM you downloaded. Just make sure you only install roms from this forum
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
The answer to your question is basically no. Roms don't change your baseband. So that doesn't matter. If your on 2.36 and you install a 2.35 ROM you'll just be on 2.35. But in the case of a kickass ROM that would be just fine.

instead of using rom manager, I would suggest doing everything from the CWM recovery itself. The manual way is always better and you encounter less problems along the way..
i.e. backup/restore isn't complete. didn't wipe everything clean... etc.

Yeah that's what I do, besides I hate how rom manager saves backups on my internal memory

I could be wrong but I think the last version of CWM wont let you make backups to the internal but you can flash from the internal. But the newest touch version that just came out a few weeks ago does have internal suppoert for backups so you have to flash the latest one. And I would listen to them when they say not to use rom manager there are far too many problems with it. Also the latest version of juggs is 4.1 and that is 2.3.6. I would use that one. Good luck

Yes do full wipe, Clear caches and do a nandroid back up first thou and make sure after flashing and re booting to let it sit for 10min

[Q] Root+Custom ROM help (i747)

Hello,
In October I purchased my first true smartphone, the Galaxy S3 i747.
Since then I have rooted and just have a few simple questions.
I haven't installed a custom ROM, and I really don't know much about them other than that they are an alternative to the stock android os (4.1, 4.0, etc.) that comes with your phone. I have a few questions about ROMs.
I have heard good things about cleanROM, and I want to download it to my phone, but I can't seem to find my phone's version of it. Does it even exist for my version? If not, what are some excellent alternatives? (Must be able to change status bar, I hate the grey one in 4.1.1, just updated tonight) Finally, with a custom ROM, will I ever have to do anything with the stock OS again? Because I get this error message now after i have upgraded to 4.1.1, that doesnt let me check for updates as I have rooted my phone.
Thanks a ton for your help guys, and sorry for the noobish questions!

I had the same questions as you did when I first started...
Best thing to do is go into the android development forums or the android original development fund a Rom, read some of the posts and feedback on it, and if you like what your reading try it out due your self.
Some roms are built around the stock TWz JB os so looks wise is minimal but alot of the extra crap removed i.e all att bloat crap apps that you never use, and other tweaks here and there.
All this into can be found on the OPs first post about the Rom, and make sure that Rom is due your phone!
Follow all pre flashing instructions, and backup!!!!!
Just flash and test it out, worst case you can just restore back to your back up and it will be as you never flashed.
There is a link with the most common Roms I'm pretty sure it's a sticky, I always use a rom that active support for it so as issues come up, they get resolved.
This stuff can get very confusing, read, search, and just post Qs some people like my self have no qualms responding to repeat questions as we all were there once before.
But search is your friend
Hope this helps!

I have a few more questions. What is a good backup application? I really know nothing about them so if somebody would reccomend one that would be great! Another thing that drew me to cleanROM is that usefull applications like kies air and dropbox weren't removed. Is this the case with many roms?
Thanks

Dropbox is always downloadable from the play store. Pretty sure it's the same deal with kies air, you can just redownload.
Backup as system is always done in CWM.
Backup applications and data for them,I highly recommend titanium back up, awesome app but phone needs to be rooted, with that app you can backup all your applications, flash a rom then just install titanium backup and restore all applications. It's very nice!

So your phone isn't rooted..
Did you try to when you hold vol- and power does the phone boot into recovery mode which should be CWM ... if that happens you are rooted..
Otherwise try to start all over with Odin and the tar files you need to root.

Odin is used to root the phone from stock.. it allows you to first install cwm and su ..once that is done, Odin isn't used any longer unless your reverting back to stock, CWM is used thus forward.

[Q] advice on unlocking (root access) on samsung galaxy tab 3 10.1

Hi,
Unsure about whether the firmware version used in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2495122 will work on samsung galaxy tab 3.10 GT-P5210 with firmware P5210XXUAMFA. Can anyone please advise? I need rooted stock rom so as to retain original apps + look & feel (it is a work tablet for my wife)
Thanks
Damian
It should be fine. But make sure you have a copy of the original in case something goes wrong.
Actually, I don't see why you don't just install cwm or twrp and the the root zip. That way you keep what you're running but gain root.
And thinking for a second you have to install cwm or twrp to install what you're asking about so it only makes sense to just install the root zip instead of the other ROM. Unless you want the few tweaks from it.

sorry for the delay... TBH, I didn't note my original build anywhere, but I would assume that it hasn't changed, as I have ONLY applied this custom recovery/root process... everything else is still stock. Right now, it reads as JDQ39.P5210XXUAMG6. I *believe* that it is good for any 52xx.. read through the thread, I am pretty sure the question came up there. IF you want to use the Sammy update when (if) an update is rolled out for our device, it will fail. The system is recognized as having been modified. There may be a way around this now, but I plan to apply any upgrade manually... if at all.
Since I have your attention, do you know of any decent custom ROMs for this thing?? I looked a bit, but there doesn't seem to be much out there:fingers-crossed:

Right now, it reads as JDQ39.P5210XXUAMG6. I *believe* that it is good for any 52xx.. read through the thread, I am pretty sure the question came up there. IF you want to use the Sammy update when (if) an update is rolled out for our device, it will fail. The system is recognized as having been modified. There may be a way around this now, but I plan to apply any upgrade manually... if at all.
Since I have your attention, do you know of any decent custom ROMs for this thing?? I looked a bit, but there doesn't seem to be much out there:fingers-crossed:

Thanks for your response! Sorry I do not. I imagine down the road there will be more development for the tab 3 but I took one look at the development and realized I would rather pay a hundred dollars more and get the device that has a processor that people know how to work with (Note10.1). Also has front facing speakers and the s pen. Sure it hasn't had the upgrade from 4.1.2 yet but I'm okay with that... that's why I root. Best of luck!

framaroot using the gandalf exploit worked great for me, it's in the app store. There have been reports of issues if you stay on stock, none if you plan on flashing a rom. I however have had no issues running stock with it either.
EDIT: What he said, lol.

Again, lol, what he said. I was simply saying that IF you stay with stock you may have issues rooting that way - but I haven't. I stayed with stock because it has given me the most stable performance/battery life but with this phone people tend to have very different experiences. Not something to be concerned by, simply means you will have to test for yourself and see what works best for you/your needs. I still flash roms(Just flashed newest Vanir with Linaro Matr1x kernel - and boy is it fast!), but always have a stock nandroid backup to fall back to. The rooting guide will explain all of this but framaroot will give you root accesss, and an app called freegee will unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery(clockworkmod or twrp). At that point, I advise everyone to make a full backup in recovery(and to copy that backup to a pc for safe keeping) - then you are free to download and flash roms, kernels, mods, etc - to your hearts content. Anything goes wrong or doesnt work properly, you can just go back into recovery and restore your backup.
Framaroot was the bees knees for me. Used it at least 9 months ago and I've never had an issue.

I'm the guy that originally tried framaroot on our phone and I didn't have any issues running stock. Framaroot from the root guide, freegee from the play store, choose recovery, boom

AT&T Note 3 ROMS on Tmobile version?

Hello,
I have an unlocked Tmobile Note 3 (running on AT&T network) and I would like to know if I could install roms from AT&T version on it? If so, do I need to do anything special for it?
I was just about to post the same question. I am still trying to search for a way to get ISIS working and at the same time not tripping Knox. I think this method may be it. I read some folks on the AT&T forum (AT&T Note 3 running on T-Mobile network) got ISIS working by flashing a T-Mobile based ROM.

Your best bet is go ask in at&t forum. They would have better answers. You will lose WiFi calling

Don't care for Wifi calling as I'm on AT&T network anyway.
Yes the AT&T Roms will work fine. You just need to follow these steps.
1. Backup
2. Wipe
3. Install AT&T ROM
4. Install T-MO n900t TW kernel of choice
5. Install n900t NFC/WIFI fix zip (this is necessary for international ROMs to work so I assume you need it for ATT also. I did it and it works fine for me) FOUND HERE

Honestly, KNOXRAID was the best one...but that got shut down due to some drama. Not sure if the download files are still available but that's what I was running. I've heard good things about the BOBCATROM port too, but that was uploaded by the same guy so I dont know if the links are there still. I think you can try any of those safely. You have to be careful on the international ROMs though because if you don't download the right ones for your phone it will wipe your internal memory (PITA).
I also edited my first post to include a link for the NFC / WIFI fix.
Thanks you for the help. I just installed the Tmobile version of the Hyperdrive rom and will give it few days before I try the AT&T ones.

I downloaded FireNote V6x from the AT&T forum and it looks like it has messed up my phone. After doing the wipes when I tried flashing it via recovery it failed and now my phone does not see the internal SD or external. I'm stuck in recovery :crying:

Did you try putting it in download mode and use Odin to flash stock firmware?
